The <strong>Academy</strong> Today:<br />

With <strong>the</strong> elevation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern and Urals Scientific Centers <strong>to</strong> Department status in<br />

<strong>the</strong> mid-1980s and with <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject-matter Departments <strong>of</strong><br />

Information Science, Computer Technology, and Au<strong>to</strong>mation (1984) and Problems<br />

<strong>of</strong> World Economics and International Relations (1988), <strong>the</strong> academy reached its<br />

present stage <strong>of</strong> development. In 1989, scientific research institutes numbered 558 in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Soviet academic science system. In 1991, <strong>the</strong> annual statistical publication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

AN SSSR listed a <strong>to</strong>tal <strong>of</strong> 365 institutes under control <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN<br />

SSSR, excluding institutes under <strong>the</strong> Agricultural, Medical, and Pedagogical<br />

Academies and <strong>the</strong> institutes under <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r 14 former republic academies <strong>of</strong><br />

science. When those are added <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> 365 institutes under <strong>the</strong> Moscow <strong>Academy</strong>,<br />

<strong>to</strong>tal numbers <strong>of</strong> institutes within <strong>the</strong> academic science system range from 577 <strong>to</strong><br />

607. The differences in <strong>the</strong>se figures may be accounted for by institutes in<br />

previously closed cities and those working in classified military research. Such<br />

numbers, despite <strong>the</strong> differences shown in this range, show <strong>the</strong> magnitude <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

basic research effort in <strong>the</strong> former Soviet Union and in Russia <strong>to</strong>day. The Chemotechnical<br />

and Biological <strong>Sciences</strong> sec<strong>to</strong>r boasts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> greatest longevity in <strong>Russian</strong><br />

science, though only 36 percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir 184 institutes saw birth before 1946; 64<br />

percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir institutes developed after that date. The Social <strong>Sciences</strong> sec<strong>to</strong>r<br />
