The Presidium and Research Innovation: The Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy <strong>of</strong>ten takes<br />

<strong>the</strong> lead in introducing new areas <strong>of</strong> research for <strong>the</strong> solution <strong>of</strong> problems by <strong>the</strong><br />

establishment <strong>of</strong> research institutes directly subordinate <strong>to</strong> it or jointly subordinate <strong>to</strong><br />

it and ano<strong>the</strong>r governmental unit. At <strong>the</strong> present time <strong>the</strong>re are six scientific research<br />

institutes directly subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium. These are listed below.<br />

Research Institutes Subordinate <strong>to</strong> Presidium in <strong>the</strong> early 90s:<br />

(Note: Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se institutes have been moved <strong>to</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r supervisory<br />

agencies in <strong>the</strong> continuing restructuring <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Academic Science<br />

System)<br />

1. Archive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> in Moscow. This is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

oldest <strong>of</strong> institutions in Russia having been established three years after <strong>the</strong> founding<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> in 1725 and is <strong>the</strong> first scholarly archive in<br />

Russia. Although in <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>the</strong> archive collected only documents <strong>of</strong> scientific<br />

conferences, in 1922 it received independent status and was authorized <strong>to</strong> house all<br />

documents produced in <strong>the</strong> subsidiary units <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy. In 1925, <strong>the</strong> archive<br />
