Sec<strong>to</strong>r. In 1987, he shared <strong>the</strong> N. D. Zelinskii Prize in organic chemistry with Kh.<br />

M. Minachev, and V. V. Kharlamov.<br />

The Biological <strong>Sciences</strong> are represented by Rem V. Petrov, D. Med. S. Born<br />

in 1930. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Chemistry <strong>of</strong><br />

Physiologically Active Compounds Department (now <strong>the</strong> Physical and Chemical<br />

Biology Department) since 1984. Also academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medical<br />

<strong>Sciences</strong>. Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy for Biology since Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1988. He was<br />

Edi<strong>to</strong>r-in-Chief <strong>of</strong> Science in Russia. In 1987, he received <strong>the</strong> I. I. Mechnikov Gold<br />

Medal in recognition <strong>of</strong> his contributions <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> chemical and biological sciences.<br />

The Earth <strong>Sciences</strong> are represented by Nikolai P. Laverov. Born in 1930.<br />

Corresponding member since 1979. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics,<br />

Geochemistry, and Mining Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> national academy since December<br />

1987. Since 1987, he has been President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kirghizstan <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>.<br />

He was named vice-President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> for <strong>the</strong> Earth<br />

<strong>Sciences</strong> Section in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber, 1988. Since 1990, he has been <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Geology <strong>of</strong> Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy and Geochemistry Institute in<br />

Moscow.<br />

The Social <strong>Sciences</strong> are represented by Vladimir N. Kudriavtsev, D. Iur. S.<br />

Born in 1923 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong> iurist. Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> for <strong>the</strong><br />

Social sciences since 1988. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy and Law<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1974; and, academician since 1984. From 1952<br />

<strong>to</strong> 1960 he taught and researched at <strong>the</strong> V. I. Lenin Military Political <strong>Academy</strong>. From<br />

1960-63 he was Deputy Chief and Chief <strong>of</strong> organizational inspection division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Military Collegium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Supreme Court <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> former Soviet Union In 1963 he<br />

joined <strong>the</strong> All-Union Institute for <strong>the</strong> Study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Causes <strong>of</strong> Crime and <strong>the</strong><br />

Development <strong>of</strong> Crime Prevention Measures. From 1969 <strong>to</strong> 1973 he was Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

that institute. Since l973, he has served as Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State and Law Institute in<br />

Moscow that was established in 1938 and is Russia's most prestigious and<br />

important facility for conducting research on governmental l, legal and political<br />

affairs. Its research directly affects <strong>Russian</strong> legislation. His principal works are on<br />

criminal law and criminology. Since l975, he has been Deputy Chairman <strong>of</strong> Soviet<br />

Sociological Association, Moscow. Since l983, he has served as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet Committee for <strong>the</strong> Defense <strong>of</strong> Peace. Since l985, he has<br />

been member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. Since 1988, he has been <strong>the</strong><br />

Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy and Law Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

The Geographic Regional Departments:<br />

The Far Eastern Department is represented by Vik<strong>to</strong>r I. Il’ichev (Ilichev), Born<br />

in 1932 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Tikhonovo, Vladimir Oblast. <strong>Russian</strong> hydrologist and<br />

hydroacoustics specialist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oceanology, Atmospheric<br />

Physics, and Geography Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR since 1976 and, academician<br />

since 1981. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Gorkiy in 1955. Between 1955<br />

and 1974 he was on <strong>the</strong> Acoustics Institute staff. In 1974, he became direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Pacific Ocean Oceanology Institute in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k established in 1973 <strong>to</strong> study <strong>the</strong><br />

complex hydrophysics <strong>of</strong> water masses, sea swell, energy exchange, and <strong>the</strong><br />
