institutes in <strong>the</strong> fields classified under this section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy.<br />

Method <strong>of</strong> Presentation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Subject-matter Departments: In analyzing this and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r departments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy, academician and corresponding member<br />

biographical sketches are given before <strong>the</strong> expanded descriptions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subordinate<br />

research institutes. When becoming acquainted with <strong>the</strong> academicians and corresponding<br />

members <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> departments, a deeper sense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong><br />

scientific research effort in that particular department is achieved. As far as is<br />

possible, institutes are presented in <strong>the</strong> order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir founding date under each<br />

department <strong>to</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y are subordinate. By this method, a sense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>rical<br />

development and growth <strong>of</strong> scientific research in Russia is developed.<br />

Retrospect: In 1987, <strong>the</strong>re were 22 academicians and 31 corresponding members in <strong>the</strong><br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy. In 1989, membership <strong>to</strong>taled 58, <strong>of</strong> whom<br />

25 were academicians and 33 were corresponding members. Twelve <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Department were ei<strong>the</strong>r Direc<strong>to</strong>rs or Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> SRIs<br />

under ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Department or <strong>the</strong> Information <strong>Sciences</strong> Department.<br />

One member is President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kirghizstan <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>; one a Vice<br />

President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Armenian academy; one is on <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ukrainian<br />

academy, ano<strong>the</strong>r a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy itself. The Scientific Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Siberian Department is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Department and eight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

department's members belong also <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department. One is a member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Urals Department and one a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department. One is Vice<br />

President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Union. One is Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> joint<br />

Institute for Nuclear Research that was established by a pact between <strong>the</strong> USSR and<br />

11 bloc countries for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> collaborating in <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> nuclear<br />

energy. One department member is also on <strong>the</strong> General Assembly board <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

GKNT. One is on <strong>the</strong> national academy's Presidium, and one was "retired" <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

status <strong>of</strong> adviser <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> national academy's Presidium in 1986.<br />

Academicians: Birth dates are missing on two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 25 academicians <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics<br />

Department. The average age <strong>of</strong> academicians was 70 years in 1991. The oldest<br />

member was 86 and <strong>the</strong> youngest was 52. Twenty-two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 25 academicians held<br />

doc<strong>to</strong>ral degrees. Sixteen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se were awarded by six universities, institutes or<br />

academies. Moscow State <strong>University</strong> produced nine graduates; Leningrad State<br />

<strong>University</strong> graduated three, and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r four came from four different institutions.<br />

Corresponding Members: The corresponding members numbered 33, and <strong>the</strong> average<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 27 corresponding members whose birth dates are known was 66.6 years in<br />

1991. Six <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 33 corresponding members were non-degree holders. Nineteen <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> 27 doc<strong>to</strong>ral degree holders graduated from seven universities and academies in<br />

Russia. Moscow State <strong>University</strong> graduated 10; Leningrad State <strong>University</strong> 3; <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Tbilisi, <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Novosibirsk, <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Gorkiy,<br />

Erevan <strong>University</strong>, <strong>the</strong> A. F. Mozhaiskii Air Force <strong>Academy</strong> in St. Petersburg, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> F. E. Dzerzhinskii Artillery <strong>Academy</strong>--each graduated one.<br />
