COMMUNITY ASSISTANT POSITION<br />

JOB APPLICATION<br />

The Community Assistants (C.A.s) are two residents of the Rita Atkinson Residences who are available to assist<br />

residents with move-ins, package pick-ups, lockouts, and general housing concerns. They also work to develop a<br />

sense of <strong>community</strong>, assist in the hosting of social events, and facilitate open communication among apartment mates.<br />

There is one C.A. <strong>position</strong> available beginning on December 10, 2012. To apply, please complete the <strong>application</strong> and<br />

return it with your resume by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 to the Rita Atkinson Residences Office,<br />

Reception area, 2 nd floor, fax to (858) 534-6103, or email to khknoll@ucsd.edu. Interviews will be held during business<br />

hours Thursday, December 6 th and Friday, December 7 th . A copy of the <strong>job</strong> description is attached.<br />

COMMUNITY ASSISTANT (“C.A.”)<br />

JOB DESCRIPTION<br />

Student-Related Responsibilities<br />

1. To be a resource person in the apartment complex.<br />

a) To assist the residents in getting accurate responses to their inquiries and concerns; this may involve<br />

helping them with University procedures.<br />

b) To disseminate information about campus events and regulations to apartment residents through<br />

personal interaction, posting flyers, newsletters, and maintaining bulletin boards.<br />

2. To advise and counsel students within the limits of training and capability, on personal, academic, and social<br />

matters.<br />

3. To help host activities which students want and need, and to contribute to the success of these activities by<br />

appropriate interest and guidance.<br />

4. To protect the rights and welfare of each student.<br />

a) To act responsibly and consistently on the residents' behalf.<br />

b) To maintain a climate and environment conducive to study, and to encourage students themselves to<br />

assume the responsibility for maintaining such an environment.<br />

c) To communicate accurately and immediately to the Rita Atkinson Residences Resident Relations<br />

Coordinator detailed information about any situation or occurrence which is potentially or actually<br />

detrimental to the rights and/or welfare of resident students.<br />

5. To interpret, explain, and when necessary, to enforce University regulations within the Rita Atkinson<br />

Residences.<br />

Staff Responsibilities<br />

1. To assist with the determination of causes and assessment of costs of damages to University property, and to<br />

cooperate with custodial and maintenance staff on issues regarding cleaning, maintenance, and damages.<br />

2. To assist campus security officials in matters related to the safety, welfare, and rights of students and<br />

protection of University property.<br />

3. To work in a staff relationship with the Office.<br />

a) To maintain sufficient contact with and attend all meetings called by the immediate staff supervisor.<br />

b) To aid in the development and maintenance of high morale and commitment among staff members.<br />

c) To provide back-up for staff in their absence.<br />

4. To attend all pre-service training programs and all in-service training programs.<br />

Administrative Responsibilities<br />

1. To keep essential information (such as telephone numbers for emergency purposes, and records of special<br />

medical problems) about each resident for whom the Community Assistant is directly responsible, and to<br />

furnish this information to the Office as requested. (Information on class schedules, activities, interests, etc.,<br />

may also be helpful.)<br />

2. To insure immediate and accurate reporting in response to all requests from the immediate staff supervisor<br />

and the Office.<br />

3. To release packages to the residents in the event the resident cannot make it to the office during normal<br />

business hours.<br />

4. To carry a University cellular telephone weekdays from 4:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and weekends/most holidays<br />

from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and respond to all calls.<br />

5. To accept responsibility for facility coverage on several designated week nights, and weekends, throughout<br />

the term of employment. During the term of duty, the C.A. is required to be available in the Office (at specified<br />

times) or in his/her room, and/or to make building tours during that time. C.A.s leaving for the<br />

weekend/vacation must check with their supervisor to insure adequate staff coverage.<br />

6. Assist locked out residents as determined by Office procedures. Maintain adequate security for all keys<br />

assigned to them, or entrusted to them.<br />

7. To be available, in general, to students at times other than just specified duty hours.<br />

8. To respond appropriately to crisis situations (such as fire, medical emergency, serious maintenance problems,<br />

personal crises), but in no instance in such a manner that would endanger her/himself. Appropriate reactions<br />

in such situations, including informing apartment residents of danger and contacting proper authority (campus<br />

police, for example), are required of C.A.s at all times. The immediate supervisor must be notified of all<br />

situations and action taken as soon as possible.<br />

9. To maintain a daily log of activities.


Formal Qualifications<br />

To be a Community Assistant, you must:<br />

1. Be a current resident of Rita Atkinson Residences and meet the eligibility requirements of the complex.<br />

2. Be a student enrolled full time in a degree granting program. You are not eligible for employment if you are on<br />

a leave of absence.<br />

3. Have excellent administrative skills.<br />

4. Have knowledge of campus and <strong>community</strong> resources.<br />

5. Demonstrate leadership ability, interpersonal skills and an appreciation of student life at UCSD.<br />

6. Use tact when dealing with the public.<br />

7. Use impartiality, sensitivity, and open-mindedness.<br />

Conditions of Employment<br />

1. Employment is through August 31, 2013<br />

2. Any C.A. wishing to obtain another <strong>job</strong> or be involved in other extra-curricular activities must make<br />

arrangements to not conflict with C.A. responsibilities.<br />

3. The C.A. can expect to spend an estimated 12 productive and involved hours per week, although this time can<br />

vary depending on the time of the year and the circumstances.<br />

Remuneration<br />

1. Credit for one room in Rita Atkinson Residences.<br />

2. Food allowance.<br />
