For many years I have been introducing myself
as Dr. Andrew Perry, President of Peripole-
Bergerault, Inc. The question that follows is usually
something like, “What?” or “Who” or “Can you spell
that please?”
Thus, our change of name. In the interest
of simplicity and ease, we have become
“Peripole, Inc.” which now matches our website,
Peripole.com.
Our long standing partnership with the Bergerault
family in France who manufacture our Orff
Instruments on an exclusive basis remains
unchanged and stronger than ever. In the interest
of clarity and to tie the Orff instruments to the
The year was 1945. World War II was near its end,
but still raging in Europe and in the Pacific. A
couple of young music educators and parents, upon
the urging of their famous mentor, Peter Dykema,
Professor and Chair of Music at Columbia University
Teachers College, decided to turn their talents
toward making instruments for music education in
elementary schools.
Sylvia and Mack Perry named their fledgling
business “Peripole.” Their first product was their
signature “Tymptone” drum which was made in
the living room of their apartment in Brooklyn, NY,
from recycled and salvaged materials. No new
materials were available because of the war effort,
to which the entire country and its resources were
marshaled. Each drum was hand-painted by Sylvia
with small figurines.
The Perrys were soon delighted to receive an order
from the famous Macy’s department store in New York
City, and being the “cottage” industry that they were,
they had no choice but to deliver the order in the only
freight carrier available to them — a baby carriage.
The years that followed saw Sylvia and Mack take
Peripole out of their living room and into a storefront
building. There was no one else making musical
instruments for general music education at the time,
and the Perrys saw rapid growth in Peripole. They took
over the store next door, then the one next to that,
and finally moved into a commercial factory building.
In the early 1960s, established leaders in their
field, the Perrys forged an alliance with the Orff-
Message from the President:
“’Tis a Gift to be Simple”
company more clearly, our Orff instruments
will now be branded, “Peripole-Bergerault ® .”
Bergerault ® Professional Keyboard Percussion
Instruments will continue to be available through
Peripole, Inc.
Our commitment to the highest quality Orff and
other instruments at the best school-direct prices
remains intact and unchanged.
We are the same company that was formerly
known as Peripole-Bergerault, Inc. and there is
no change in ownership or management. All of
our mission, from being your “Partner in Music
Education ® ,” to providing the only instruments
backed by our exclusive Triple Guarantee, as
A Different Kind of Beginning
Schulwerk movement in Europe and made history
by becoming the first company to import Orff instruments
into the United States for sale to schools.
The Perrys were also charter members of AOSA.
In 1974, after launching two famous brands of Orff
instruments in the United States, the Perrys made
a new partnership with the Bergerault company
in France, having finally found a company whose
Orff instrument quality matched their own high
standards of manufacture.
In 1992 company founder, Sylvia Perry, seven years
after Mack’s death, moved to Salem, Oregon, to
join forces with her son, now company president,
Dr. Andrew Perry, then a practicing physician, who
had been involved with the company and music
education throughout his life. Andrew welcomed the
return of the company into his life and, together with
the added partnership of the Bergerault Company,
Peripole-Bergerault was established in Salem.
Since 1992 the following keynote events have
occurred:
• Continued enhancements to the already top
quality of Bergerault ® Orff instruments
• Development of the Peripole ® Angel Halo ®
Recorder line with record-breaking demand
and sales
• Establishment of the historic partnership
with Toca ® Percussion to create the
innovative line, Peripole ® Percussion
by Toca ® , co-designed for optimal
classroom use
well as our commitment to
personalized service with
a real person to answer
the phone when you
call, and the availability
of expert consultation
for your orders, remains
unchanged.
We look forward to growing through this next phase
of our company’s development, and we hope to
continue to serve you now, and into the future.
Each year, Peripole, Inc. makes a major contribution to the support of music education, nationally, state-by-state, and
locally. The contribution takes many forms. We are proud to call this program Partners in Music Education ® . Today,
we make the commitment to continue and to grow this program.
Many of our close friends in music education who share an awareness of this effort have said, “Until I worked by your
side at a convention, I had no idea how much you did, and how hard you work to support music education. If only
everyone knew!”
We at Peripole, Inc. take this partnership very seriously. As a company of music educators, we see ourselves as having a
key leadership role to play in helping to establish and maintain the highest possible standards in music education, thus
helping to bring those standards to classrooms all over North America.
Recent examples of contributions include:
• Sponsorship of keynote and other presenters at numerous local, state, and national music educators’ association
conventions, and in-service days.
• Provision of Peripole-Bergerault ® Orff Instrumentaria; Peripole ® Percussion by Toca instruments; and free
Peripole ® Angel Halo ® Recorders at sessions, clinics, and courses nationwide.
• Donation of Instrumentaria to special non-profit music education organizations such as NAƒME (formerly MENC)
and AOSA.
• Donation of innumerable door prizes and special awards at conventions, courses, and chapter meetings
nationwide.
• Donation of instruments to schools hit by natural disasters.
We are very proud of these contributions to music education. In the three years since the program began, the need
for it has grown exponentially. We have endeavored to rise to the challenge. We thank all of our loyal customers
who have supported us and have enabled us to be in a position where we are able to return something to the music
education community as a whole.
MADE IN
THE USA
800-443-3592
Peripole was the first US manufacturer
of musical instruments
for general and elementary
music education. Without
any foreign competition in
their early years, our business
thrived unopposed.
In the early 1960's,
competitors arose who
shipped our instruments overseas to
be copied. Since then, this has become part of
life. However, although our prices have been matched, and
at times even beaten, the one thing that has never been
matched is our quality. We are very proud of this fact.
From our Tymptone Drum, to all of our jingle-bell products,
to our woodblocks, and much more, Peripole has remained
a solid US manufacturer, despite the temptation to seek
cheaper overseas sources. We also contract with several
other US manufacturers for manufacturing and/or distribution.
In fact, you will find over 100 items in this catalog manufactured
exclusively in the USA.
Although we do offer many cost-competitive, non-US made
products, our commitment to growing our US manufacturing and
quality is absolute. We are also proud that our Orff Instruments are
manufactured in France, a country with outstanding industrial standards,
similar to our own.
Please join us in supporting the rekindling of the entrepreneurial flame of
manufacturing in the USA and in raising world industrial standards!
STILL MAKING MUSIC “GREEN”
Being “in harmony” means a lot of things to a lot of people. But as
our planetary time passes and populations grow, it has become
critical to consider the long term health and harmony of not only
the people and other living things that inhabit the earth, but also
the health of the living ecosystems of the planet itself.
Peripole, Inc. has always taken this commitment seriously from
the time when we began our own program to reuse shipping
boxes in 1992 to the present when we have completed an
extensive insulation project including replacement of all of the
large size windows on our building with energy conserving ones,
thus yielding a smaller “carbon footprint”. In 2008 we took the
additional step of purchasing 100% of the electrical power we use
from renewable “green” sources. Additionally, we are proud that
this catalog is printed on recycled paper with soy ink.
You may have noticed that we favor natural, biodegradable,
renewable and recyclable materials in the construction of
our instruments and in our packaging materials. This is not an
accident. We seek to avoid using products that are harmful to
the environment and to individual health, and we favor natural
authentic materials such as wood and tunable skins for drums,
but always with an eye to quality. We never have and never will use
lead based paints in our products.
From time to time, we are asked about polishing and caring
of Rosewood Bars. For those of you who are interested,
we offer the following suggestions. If possible, avoid sharp
changes of temperature and humidity. Instruments should
not be stored in front of windows, radiators, air ducts, or
direct sunlight. After extensive use, bars may be cleaned with
lemon oil sparingly applied, containing no silicones, linseed
oil or beeswax. Polish vigorously immediately with a soft dry
cloth. Since Peripole-Bergerault ® Rosewood Bars are of very
fine quality and well aged, they only require normal care in
usage with an occasional cleaning.
The Orff Instrumentarium consists of three different kinds of timbre – glockenspiels, metallophones and xylophones; three different ranges of voices – soprano,
alto and bass; and two different styles – diatonic and chromatic. Diatonic instruments contain additional F# and Bb bars, thus enabling playing in a variety of
keys. Since it might be desirable to have as many different kinds of sounds as possible, many start out, if budgets permit, with one instrument in each category.
Metal instruments tend to overshadow wood instruments in tonal volume and this, therefore, might be a consideration in doubling on xylophones and cutting back
on metallophones. A Bass Xylophone is strongly recommended as an early choice. Sub-Contra and Contra Bars make excellent Timpani Drum replacements because
of their truer pitch and richer tone. Budgetary considerations are also an important factor and thus influence choices to purchase. Please feel free to telephone us at
1-800-443-3592 for consultation and assistance. We will always be pleased to help in any possible way. Remember, financial considerations often compel building
a complete instrumentarium to take more than one year to complete. This is why buying top quality guaranteed instruments is so all important so that the
original instruments will remain in perfect condition through the years and thus match perfectly with new additions. Peripole-Bergerault ® instruments
will combine successfully with any other instrument accurately tuned to A440.
a GUiDe to orff MalletS – fiBerGlaSS vs BircH SHaftS
Peripole, Inc. is pleased to offer soprano (blue), alto
(yellow) and bass (red) Orff Instrument mallets in two
shaft materials, fiberglass, which comes as standard
equipment with instruments, and birch hardwood.
We are often asked which material we recommend
and the truth is that each has advantages and
disadvantages. We offer the following to help with
your selection:
Fiberglass is extremely durable and break resistant.
It also has a heavier head which creates a feeling like
“bouncing a ball” when playing. Many teachers and
clinicians prefer and recommend this kind of balance.
If shafts are struck against each other or the edge of
2550
the keys or other sharp objects, the protective coating
on the shafts will eventually chip and expose the
fiberglass which can splinter. Mallets must be repaired
by covering or refinishing the damaged portion, or they
should be replaced.
Birch hardwood is a thicker, lighter material and
creates a larger more ergonomic grip and balanced
feel. If the shaft material is damaged by striking each
other or sharp objects, resulting imperfections are
easier to see, and can be easily repaired by sanding
and paint, or by covering. Birch hardwood, though quite
durable with normal use, might be broken if stepped
on or otherwise severely abused.
THE MANDé
INSTRUMENT ENSEMBLE
Mandé is a family of ethnic groups of West Africa in which Mandé languages are spoken. Located
chiefly in Guinea, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, and Mali, Mandé people have beautiful tribal and
musical cultures rich in tradition, but also with modern adaptations.
It was Mandé ethnic groups who developed the drums known as the Djembe (or Jembe) and the Dunduns
(played as a set), which form the core of their traditional ensemble. Other traditional instruments of this
ensemble may be found in this section of our catalog as well.
These instruments and tools can help bring authentic West African music, dance, and culture to life
in your classroom.
a Special note about our
west african Instruments
Instruments in our Mandé Instrument
Ensemble are all hand-made by native
craftspeople. As such, they are both of the
finest quality and truly authentic, giving
as real an experience of the West African
village and music as possible. However, it
is not unusual to find cosmetic flaws in the
instruments that would not be present in
factory-made instruments.
Thus, these minor flaws should be
expected, and our guarantee does not
cover them. We do guarantee these
instruments against major defects and
for quality of sound.
Djembe (jEM-bay)–alsospelledJembe-
This unique and powerful instrument
originated in the 13th century in the
present-day countries of Guinea and Mali.
Its goblet shape comes from the large
mortars used to pound millet that were
adapted into these drums. Carved from
a single piece of hardwood, with goat
skin stretched across the larger of the
two openings, the Djembe is traditionally
played with the hands while standing, but
can be played seated, as well. The three
primary notes played on the Djembe cover
a large sonic spectrum, making it both a
solo, and an accompaniment instrument.
Djembes are played in ensembles with
other different pitched Djembes and with
Dundun drums.
the Dundun (Doon-doon) – This family
of double-headed drums are cylindrically
shaped with cow skin covering both ends.
The three drums from largest to smallest
are called Dundunba (DOON-doon-bah),
Sangban (SAHNG-bahn), and Kenkeni
(KEN-ken-nee). Together, the Dunduns
provide the rhythmic and melodic foundation
for the Mandé Instrument Ensemble TM
and are always played with Djembes.
Dunduns are traditionally played horizontally
with the heads of the drum played
with a large stick (16” to 17” long). They
are sometimes placed vertically and
played by one person using two sticks.
Seke-Seke - The seke-seke
(SEH-KEH SEH-KEH), also called
the “kese-kese”, is a basketshaped
shaker from eastern Guinea
comprised of small rocks or seeds
housed in a woven covering of burlap
and leather. They are always played
in pairs using alternating hand motions. We are using the Ghanaian
caxixi in place of the true seke-seke because of its great similarity
and due to a lack of availability of the seke-seke for importation at
this time.
pB 4323 KSinG KSinG (Set of tHree) $28.50
ksing ksing - The ksing ksing (kah-SING kah-SING) also called
“sese-sese” (SE-say, SE-say) in some areas, are three metal “ears”
with attached metal rings that are
sometimes attached to a soloist’s
or leader’s drum to produce a rattle
effect, giving the perception of
increased volume and differentiation
or coloration of sound.
Bala - The bala (BAH-lah), called balafon in French, originates
among the Susu ethnic group but is found throughout West Africa.
Considered by many to be the precursor to the modern xylophone,
the bala consists of a frame from which 21 wooden bars are strung
in decreasing length, each with gourd resonators attached to the
bottom. We are recommending the use of our Orff xylophones to be
substituted for traditional bala parts, as also recommended by Ryan
Camara and Kalani. It is for this reason that they are included in our
Mandé Instrument Ensemble Sets.
Most important, the sound and intonation of these
JAsmine guitARs By tAkAmine
“Inside every Jasmine, you’ll find the heart and soul of a Takamine.”
Jasmine guitars by Takamine are the kind of instrument that beginning and intermediate level musicians are proud to play. The sound is great and
so are the action and intonation. It's the kind of instrument that makes you love to play and practice!
sizeD clAssicAl guitARs
These classical guitar models are scaled to exact dimensions in fingerboard scale, bracing
and acoustic tolerances, and for correct pitch regardless of size. The Jasmine sizing system
establishes full sizes (4/4) as the adult size and the smaller guitars, like orchestral instruments,
are graded in quarters, rather than random terms. All four sizes of the Jasmine guitar are constructed
of the same high quality materials, featuring a top made of spruce naturally finished,
real mahogany back and sides, nato neck and pegboard face, adjustable tuning machines with
white pearl buttons.
DReADnought AnD
neX style BoDies
Dreadnought guitars are the deep, round, figure-8 shape that have become the
standard of bluegrass, folk, and other genres. They offer a deep, full sound and are
generally larger than other guitar body styles. Steel strings.
the nex style body is a signature Takamine design. The top has a pleasing, rounded
profile that is narrow at the waist, yet broad behind the bridge creating a soundboard
that offers a balanced frequency response with deep bass, clear treble, and a sweet,
round midrange that projects well. The body carries the depth of a dreadnought to
ensure a great level of volume. The Nex has the feel of a small-bodied guitar yet yields
impressive performance. The deep cutaway allows easy access to the instruments
higher frets and range.
it will be considered a defective item and will be subject to
our defective item return policy.
Please note: Due to hygienic considerations, all sales
on instruments which are played by mouth (recorders,
