Dear Modeller
We are a leading supplier of world class historic wooden model ship kits, plans, books, instructional DVDs, tools, ship fittings and timbers. We offer our customers a
worldwide mail service.
As experienced modellers we’re dedicated to providing you with assistance and advice with all your modelling needs. Whether you’re 10 miles or 10,000 miles away
we'll be able to assist you personally.
For those interested in Australian maritime history, we manufacture our own colonial series of wooden model ship kits.
Successful completion of a model ship does not demand any particular skills. Rather, it simply requires neatness, an “eye” for what looks right, an unhurried methodical
approach and above all, patience.
Models are built in four main stages:
1. The framework and deck assembly
2. Individual planks are shaped and fitted to the hull and the masts and yards are assembled.
3. The hull and masts are painted and/or varnished.
4. The “standing’ and “running” rigging are completed.
Whilst the time necessary for completion will depend on the complexity of the particular model, as well as the keenness of the modeller, it should be said that even the
smaller models in our range will take some time to finish. A time scale of between 6 and 12 months from start to finish would not be unusual. Our kits are divided into
skill levels so we know you will find a kit that is right for you.
The project should always be seen as a pleasure rather than a chore with any minor problems that crop up adding to the ultimate satisfaction of building your model. We
encourage you to take photos of your work as you progress to record the development of your model.
If you are a beginner and would like to find out about more about model ship building why not think about enrolling in one of our online courses. These courses will be
available in our online learning centre soon.
We are a ‘one stop shop’ for ship modellers. Our priority is your order and we ensure that we despatch all orders as quickly as possible. If you are passing through the
Blue Mountains you are most welcome to call in, see our showroom, and collect your order in person.
You’ll find our website interactive and easy to navigate. Our shopping cart system is encrypted for maximum security to make credit card transactions safe and secure.
You can save time by ordering directly through the site or you can phone, fax or email your order.
We look forward to serving you in the near future.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Who are Modellers Shipyard ?
Modellers Shipyard has been serving modellers for 30 years. We are a family business. Importantly though, we are experienced modellers so we know what you are
talking about when you ask for assistance. If you would like to visit us, please phone for an appointment. When people do visit we want to make sure we give you our full
attention.
Do I need any previous modelling experience?
Many of our customers have never built a model before contacting us. We offer kits, tools and DVDs for the first time modeller.
What tools are needed?
We offer a beginners tool pack which contains all the tools your will need to get started with your hobby. We also provide a range of tools for the more experienced modeller.
Do I need any books?
All our kits provide instructions which tell you what to do. We have an extensive range of books and also offer great training DVDs on different aspects of modelling.
Should I built a kit or make a model from scratch?
We recommend that first time modellers build a kit. Kits have the advantage of introducing modellers to the approaches and techniques of wooden model ship building.
For people who decide to build from scratch we recommend that you have access to a very good workshop, range of tools, and are able to make your own planks and
most of the fittings yourself.
What is double planking ?
This is a simple method of applying two layers of planking to the hull, instead of one. The first layer is usually limewood, or a similar timber which is soft and easy to work
with. The second layer is thinner and more decorative timber such as walnut or mahogany. This layer looks beautiful when vanished. The advantage of this method is
that any ‘hills’ or ‘hollows’ or mistakes in the first layer can be levelled off before the second layer is fitted.
Do all models have sails?
Generally models in which sails are not shown in the photograph do not have ready made or cloth and patterns in the kit. When a photograph of a model, does have a
sails either fully set or furled , sail cloth and pattern is supplied. A few such as the ‘ Shenandoah, ‘ ‘Flying Fish’ and ‘Resolution’ have ready made sails supplied with the
kit. We can supply ready made sails at an extra cost.
Is a display baseboard included in the kit?
This depends on the manufacturer. Generally Mantua do not include a display base in their kits, however some do have a simple ply cradle. Most other kits do have a
display base of some sort, but it may vary from that shown in our catalogue or on the lid of the box. A decision on the final display baseboard can be left until the model is
complete.
Is it better to paint or clear vanish?
That’s up to you- most kits have been designed with a variety of naturally coloured timbers, with the idea that you will use vanish. Varnishing can be easier than painting.
Is a name plate included?
Sometimes. If you are wondering whether the kit you wish to purchase has a nameplate, please give us call. We can supply name plates at an extra cost.
Which models are suitable for a child?
We offer a range of models for children, just check out catalogue.
Why buy a model ship from an internet based business?
We specialise in wooden model ships and carry a larger range of stock than the local hobby shop. We offer a personalised service for all your modelling needs. We
have customers on every continent including Antarctica.
KITS
Model ship building is a rewarding and creative hobby. Whether you’re building a model for the first time or you’re an experienced modeller, you’ll find a kit here that will
bring you many hours of enjoyment. We have high quality kits that everyone can afford. Our kits are imported from Italy and we manufacture our very own kits relevant
to Australian colonial maritime history.
We have identified a number of kits that would be suitable if you are building a model kit for the first time. These are identified as Skill Level 1 & 2. Also we have a few
models that would be suitable for a 12 + years old child with adult guidance which are identified as Skill Level 1. All our kits have been categorised under Skill Levels.
These levels are explained below.
All our kits come with all timbers, fittings, plans and instructions to complete the model. Also all our model ship kits have two layers of planking (double planked) except
where identified.
Skill Levels
We have divided all our kits into six Skill Levels. These levels are described below. All Skill Levels require the modeller to be able to follow written instructions and
to read and interpret plans & drawings.
The Skill Levels are:
Skill Level 1 (SL1) kits can be built without prior model building experience, using simple hand tools. Some parts in Skill Level 1 kits require cutting & fitting of timbers.
Kits in this skill level are suitable for a 12+ year old child to build with adult guidance.
Skill Level 2 (SL2) kits require slightly more skill and some prior experience using hand tools. Some parts in Skill Level 2 kits require cutting, fitting and shaping of timber
pieces.
Skill Level 3 (SL3) kits are intended for the person having some prior experience building wooden model kits. Skill Level 3 kits contain parts that require cutting, fitting,
shaping and fabricating wooden and possibly metal parts.
Skill Level 4 (SL4) kits are intended for the experienced modeller. Before building a Skill Level 4 kit it is recommended the modeller construct a Skill Level 3 kit.
Skill Level 5 (SL5) kits are for the experienced period model ship builder.
Skill Level 6 (SL6) kits are for the expert period model ship builder.
The three most important characteristics for a successful modeller are patience, patience and yet more patience. Before cutting or gluing anything give a lot of thought to
the task at hand, re-read the instructions, re-examine and interpret the plans. If in doubt contact us for assistance, sometimes just talking with another modeller
can help clarify the issue at hand.
Modelling wooden ships is a very rewarding and creative hobby. Take your time and enjoy the craft.
1.1 Modellers Shipyard
MODELLERS SHIPYARD has been manufacturing model kits since 1986. They are the only manufacturer of wooden model
ships in Australia. Their historically accurate kits are faithful interpretations of the original vessels. Their Australian colonial
series of model ships is extremely popular. The comprehensive plans and high detailed English instructions will assist you
throughout the whole construction process. All kits are double plank on bulkhead construction and only use the highest quality
parts and fittings.
We also have available a 2 DvD set on ‟The CompleTe guide on how To Build The Colonial SChooner
COLONIAL SCHOONER PORT JACKSON 1803
In September 1788, only 18 months after the founding of the new colony on the
shores of Port Jackson – now better known as Sydney Harbour, governor Arthur
Phillip sent a message to his superiors in England requesting two vessels to be sent
out in frame, with a few shipwrights to put them together. After considerable delay,
drafts were prepared for a “Schooner for Port Jackson”.
The original drafts are still in the national Maritime Museum, greenwich, England and
are the raw material on which our drawings and kit of the “colonial Schooner Port
Jackson” are based.
We have no records available to show whether in fact our schooner was actually
constructed or if so what become of her, however, our model is in every way an
accurate representation of an early Australian colonial schooner as constructed by
the infant industry that emerged during the 15 years waiting for a completed response
to Governor arthur Phillip‟s original request.
A drawing of the “Mercury” owned by Mary Reiby an early Sydney merchant appears on the
Australian $20 currency note. The „Mercury” is identical to the “Port Jackson-Schooner”.
A double plank on bulkhead construction with laser cut plywood. The kit comes
complete with all timber, rigging cord, and wooden and metal fittings. all parts
and fittings are of the highest quality. it includes thirty two a3 pages of detailed
HM CUTTER MERMAID 1817
The HM cutter Mermaid was built of teak in calcutta; she was less
than a year old when commissioned on 16 October 1817. For the
next 3 years lieutenant Phillip Parker King, Rn, used the Mermaid
for her designated task of “Exploring and Surveying the coast of
Australia”. Mermaid survived three voyages of discovery under
King‟s command but it was the third voyage involving a complete
circumnavigation of the Australian mainland which draws closest
scrutiny. on 8 May 1819 Mermaid sailed north, conducting the first
reliable survey of the great Barrier Reef Inner Route, opening it
to commercial trafic. From then onwards King ran running surveys
along the entire coastline until, with Mermaid leaking badly, he knew
this survey was over. At the location King named careening Bay,
the hull was patched up for 3 weeks until 9 october. During this time
King carved “HMc Mermaid 1820” on the single Boab tree at the
rear of the bay. this example of historic graffiti remains to this day.
Mermaid sailed and entered the calm waters of Sydney cove on 9
December 1820, some 25 weeks and 3 days since sailing, having
circumnavigated the continent. unfortunately, ironically, she ran
aground in the very route she had opened to shipping off the present
site of cairns, in 1829, and was lost. In January 2009 the wreck of
the Mermaid was found by a team of marine archaeologists from the
Australian national Maritime Museum. The site of the wreck has now
been declared a maritime heritage site.
ISABELLA - Paddle Steamer 1912
Paddle steamers formed a vital part in opening up the inland of Australia. The inland
river system of the Murray, Darling, Lachlan and Murrumbidgee formed a network to
connect inland communities across the Australian states. Paddle steamers have been
plying these inland waters since 1853 travelling along the river system from Goolwa
at the mouth of the Murray to the inland towns of Bourke on the Darling, Wagga
Wagga on the Murrumbidgee and Forbes on the Lachlan.
The PS Isabella is typical of the working boats that plied the river system in the late
1800s to the early 1900s. Working boats like her towed cargo barges up and down
the rivers, servicing the needs and providing vital links for the inland communities to
the outside world. The kit is plank on bulkhead construction with laser cut board.
all parts and fittings are of the highest quality. it includes 12 sheets of detailed
instructions with extensive colour photographs.
VICTORY - Mid Ship Cross Section
The HMS Victory, is the name of Nelsons Flagship, on which he was killed at
Trafalgar. The battle of Trafalgar was one of the most famous battles in history,
bitterly fought on the 21st October 1805, between English and French-Spanish
fleets. This is one of the few ships of those times which has reached us in a
perfectly preserved state. Begun in 1759 and launched in 1765, she was subjected
to several rebuilding’s before arriving at Trafalgar.
A completely updated cross section of the H.M.S Victory enables us to reproduce
the internal details much more realistically, in particular the masts. The model is
completed by highly realistic accessories such as casks, barrels, buckets, and flag.
to peak, reaching a depth of 35 meters. It was on 10 August 1628. Construction
of the ship started in 1625, under the supervision of the Dutch architect, Henrik
Hybertson.
This model reproduces a section of the left bulwarks, with part of the deck and
underlying battery deck; besides the hull structure, particular care has been paid to
the cannon and gun carriage, and to the historically documented reconstruction of
The Wasa, a royal Swedish vessel with 64 guns sank in the waters around
Stockholm on the day it was launched (10 August 1628) as the result of a violent
gust of wind. The ship settled in 35 m of water. Construction on the vessel started
in 1625, under the direction of the Dutch architect Henrik Hybertsson. While some
guns and a few other objects had been recovered earlier, it was only possible to
bring the ship to the surface in 1956.
AJAX - English Frigate 1765
Launched in Plymouth in 1765, Ajax was armed and supplied five years later, when it sailed
for its first trip to North America In 1786, during a winter mission in Atlantic, it ran into a severe
storm that seriously damaged it. The storm lasted three days but with some temporary repairs,
it managed to reach Scotland after a journey lasting forty five days. Within a month, some
major repairs were carried out and it set sail to Plymouth.
Ajax sailed for the next twelve years but was disarmed and abandoned in the Plymouth navy
yards. However, in 1801, the Admiralty was keen to expand its fleet and decided to utilize again
some disarmed ships like the Ajax. At the end of 1802 the ship sailed with the Mediterranean
fleet and participated in the Toulon siege with other English ships, amongst which was the
famous HMS Victory, commanded by Admiral Nelson. On 21st October 1805 Ajax participated in
the Trafalgar war, where it damaged a Spanish ship and sunk a French one.
HMS FALMOUTH - English India Companies of 1752
The Falmouth was launched in Blackwall, England in 1752. It was the first trading vessel of
the English India Companies and showed a close resemblance to a warship in sail plan and
rigging, with the most up to date reef points to her topsails The ship was equipped with a large
amount of artillery, unusual for the trading vessels of that period. In that she was run along the
lines of naval discipline was due to the fact that the vessel could sail alone without any convoy
ship, since its rich load was a good bounty for all the enemy vessels and pirate ships.
The Falmouth could easily combat a war-ship of the same tonnage, thanks to its crew of 180
experienced men including the best trained gunners. The superiority of the crew was partly
due to the incentive granted to each gunman allowing each individual to transport his
own 5 tonnage of goods there and 2 tonnage back. These goods were usually sold as
smuggled goods to the black market. The Falmouth was of 499 tons and was in service until
1764 completing five voyages for the East India Company. She was lost on her sixth voyage,
wrecked in 1766.
MORDAUNT - 4th Rate English Vessel 1681
The Mordaunt was launched at Deptford, near London in 1681. It was commissioned
by a syndicate of shipowners headed by Lord Mordaunt. However, he later became
the sole owner of the vessel, when the other members left that association.
The aim in having such a greatly armed private ship was to eliminate the war ship
stock. This idea aroused some suspicion; therefore the Ambassador of Spain
presented his complaints to the Court of St. James, asserting that a warship owned by
private people could have been easily taken by the Elector of Brandenburg, who was
completing a fleet to move against Spain.
The vessel was sequestered, and Lord Mordaunt was forced by the Court to limit the
armament and crew. In 1683, the ship was seconded into the Royal Navy, where it
remained until 21 November, 1693, when it disappeared in the open sea of Cuba. A
model of this ship is showed in Greenwich Museum.
LA RENOMMEE - 18th Century French Frigate
There were two Renommee’s built in France, one in the 17th Century and
this one in the 18th Century. Launched in 1744 at either Byrone or Brest, La
Renommee was a one-off 40-gun ship designed by Antoine Groignard with 30
12-pounders and 10 8-pounder guns. She was captured by the British Navy
(HMS Dover) 27 September, 1747 and converted into a 30-gun fifth-rate frigate
as the HMS Renown and served until she was broken up in 1771.
However, this type of frigate is very important in the evolution of ships of the
British Navy because it inspired the development of a series of fifth-rate frigates
equipped with only thirty guns of large calibre, all placed on the second deck.
HMS BEaGlE - Darwin’s Brig
HMS Beagle was the ship in which the naturalist, Charles Darwin, sailed around the world
between 1831 and 1836. The Beagle visited sites like the Galapagos Islands and the Great
Barrier Reef. The rich variety of animal and plant species that Darwin saw on the voyage led
him to develop his theory of evolution. Beagle made three voyages of exploration.
During the first to South America between 1826 and 1830, the captain, Commander Pringle Stokes,
shot himself in a fit of depression and was replaced by Robert Fitzroy He was also given command
for the second voyage to South America and then around the world. Fitzroy invited the young
naturalist Charles Darwin to accompany him. The voyage lasted nearly five years and became one
of the most famous and important voyages of exploration ever made. After the Beagle’s third voyage,
vicissitudes which caused the crew to mutiny. Christian Fletcher, the boatswain, took command
The Royal Louis was a 3 deck vessel with 120 guns. Its captain was a Squadron
Royal Navy at the time. Our model represents the Royal Louis according to the plans
of 1779, when it was admiral ship of the blue and white Squadron, being part of the
American Squadron, also called Earl Estaing’s. Our kit is particularly rich in accessories
and decorations. Whoever knows how complex are the deck’s superstructures of
this ship, can easily understand the problems we had to solve in order not to alter
the real image. The several molten decorations of the transom are made precious
by veneer insertions of precious wood. Thanks to the particular structure of the ship,
the reproduction accuracy is such that, through a window of the stern balconies, it is
CuttY SaRK - Tea Clipper 1869
Built in 1869 at Dumbarton in Scotland, by the firm of Scott & Linton, for Captain
John “Jock” “White Hat” Willis, and launched November 23 of that year. The Cutty
Sark was destined for the China tea trade, at that time an intensely competitive race
across the globe from China to London, with immense profits to the ship to arrive
with the first tea of the year. In the most famous race, against Thermopylae in 1872,
both ships left Shanghai together on June 18, but two weeks later Cutty Sark lost
her rudder after passing through the Sunda Strait, and arrived in London on October
18, a week after Thermopylae, for a total passage of 122 days. Her legendary
reputation is supported by the fact that her captain chose to continue this race with an
improvised rudder instead of putting into port for a replacement, yet was only beaten
by one week. The Cutty Sark was then used in the Australian wool trade. Under the
command of the respected Captain Richard Woodget, she did very well, posting
Australia-to-England times of as little as 67 days. She was said to have been the
fastest of any ship of her size. She is now in dry-dock at Greenwich.
San FELIPE - Spanish 104 Gun Man of War
The San Felipe, launched in 1690, was one of the most beautiful Spanish galleons
of the XVII century. She was a lead ship of the famous Spanish Armada. The San
Felipe displaced more than 1000 tons and was armed with 104 guns, enabling her
to take on the most formidable ships in the French and British navies. The San
Felipe’s role in the war against the British and French was to help protect Spanish
settlements and harbors, to transport treasures, and to safeguard the long and
hazardous passage back to Spanish ports. In 1705, she participated in a furious
and heroic battle between 12 Spanish ships and 35 British ships. After 24 hours of
battle, she was captured by an English ship, but was so badly damaged that she
could not be salvaged as a prize. She went down to the bottom of the ocean with
SOLEIL ROYaLE - 104 Gun Ship of the Line
The Soleil Royale (Royal Sun) was a French 104-gun ship of the line, flagship of
Admiral Tourville. She was built in Brest between 1669 and 1671 by engineer Laurent
Hubac, and commissioned as the flagship of the escadre du Po-nant (squadron of
the Ponant). She was said to be a very good sailing ship and her decorations were
amongst the most beautiful and elaborate of all baroque flagships. The emblem of the
“sun” had been chosen by Louis XIV as his personal symbol.
The battle of Barfleur began on 19th May 1692 and lasted for almost two days.
Having been badly damaged she disengaged together with three others and was
systematically destroyed by cannon shot and fire by the Anglo/Dutch fleet. It was
warship in the Royal Navy, completely adorned from stern to bow with gilded carvings
against a black background. At the time she was the most powerfully armed ship in the
world. Until 1655 she was also exceptionally large for an English vessel.
out of the port of Havana on 13th July, with a crew of 34 and armed with a single carronade, 16
rifles and 15 pistols. She was captured by the British brig HMS Black Joke, with 567 African captives
SAN MARCOS - Portugese Galleon
This galleon is a direct descendant of the “caracks”, large, distinguished galleons,
originally Mediterranean based but later sailing the Atlantic. The name galleon was first
given to a type of ship from Liguria, built at the start of the 16th century. Initially designed
as merchantmen they were heavily armed, for defence against pirates and other enemies,
but ended up, after 1570, becoming men of war. Although the galleons reached their
greatest splendour when they plied the Atlantic, the height of their development, they
were the result of accumulated experiences on the European Atlantic front and their
experiences as merchantmen in the Mediterranean.
In 1588, King Philip II of Spain put the Duke of Sidonia in charge of the Spanish Armada.
With the goal of invading England, 131 ships and 17,000 men set out for Dunkirk, where
they were to join forces with the Duke of Parma and pick up another 16,000 men. One
of the most important ships of the fleet was the San Marcos, a Portugese galleon of 790
tons. She carried 33 guns, 292 soldiers and 117 sailors. Heavily damaged during the
battle and punished by high winds, San Marcos broke up on the reef
between Mutton Island and Lurga just off Ireland’s west coast.
Now, you can get a close-up view of the interior workings of the Santisima Trinidad,
Spain’s largest battleship at the time of the Battle of Trafalgar. In many ways more
interesting than the full hulled model, the cross section takes less time to build and less
space to display.
Built in Havana in 1769, Santisima Trinidad carried 120 guns on three decks. Badly
damaged in the battle of Cape St. Vincent in 1799, she was rebuilt with the addition of
a fourth deck and the number of cannon increased to 136, making her the largest ship
of her time. In 1805, she sailed into the Battle of Trafalgar with a crew of 1,048 men and
her immense 4-decked sides showing the barrels of her formidable guns. The British
disabled and captured her during the battle. She sank in a storm the following day,
ending her 35-year service to the Spanish Navy.
SINAGOT – Oyster Lugger 1943
The French name for this type of boat is sinagot, which literally means
‘inhabitant of Sene’, a small village on the Morbihan Gulf in south-west
Brittany. Earlier this century, approximately 300 of these small family
dayboats fished for oysters in this inland sea, famous for its unique tidal
regime, out into Quiberon Bay. Some remained in service up until the
1960s. On traditional holidays, the sinagots pitted themselves in hardfought
regattas.
ST GILLES - French Mediterranean Coaster 1877
St Gilles was designed to be suitable for navigation in shallow water as they are flat
bottom ships. Many prints of that time bear witness to their importance regarding both
their utility and number. Also, their flat bottom enabled them to extend their navigation
along the Mediterranean coastline both for coastal traffic and for the lading of sea-going
ships, thus providing the transport of Rhone timber, Arles quarry stones and cattle fodder.
MARIE ADELAIDE - Herring Boat 1877
The herring boats operated towards the end of the 19th century and had remarkable
sea-keeping properties. Marie Adelaide is a fine example of this class of craft. When
fishing for herring, the boat drifted with it nets secured forward. Nets were hauled
over rollers, using a ten-bar capstan. The knock-down catch boxes on the deck were
designed to receive the herring as fishing progressed, before the catch was prepared
and sent below.
These smacks trawled off Saint-Brieuc, Saint-Malo, Granville, and Cancale and
were unique to the English Channel. Once the sails were raised, only 2 or 3
men were needed to manoeuvre the boat. Once a year, forming what was called
the ‘caravan’, the smacks went out to dredge for oysters on the Grand Banks
off Cancale and Granville. The last of the Cancale smacks disappeared off the
French Atlantic coast around 1950.
YANN ET GAEL - Lobster Boat 1927
It was in 1877 that a Breton fisherman from Camaret, bought a 62 ton herring lugger
and had it fitted with a holding tank for live lobsters in the local shipyard. His plan
was to fish for rock lobsters off the coast of Galicia, where they were abundant, and
not exploited by the local fisherman. The Breton fisherman extended their lobster
fishing to the coasts of Portugal, Spain and later Morocco and even Mauritania, which,
being faraway and at the same time exotic earned them the nickname ‘Mauritania
lobstermen’.
a shipowner from the Sables d’Olonne modified the classical form of fishing vessel by
taking inspiration from lines of racing yachts. From this was born the Saint Gildas. A 60
ton boat, with ample sail, 10 to 12 man crew, it fishes tuna on the line with long poles or
‘tangons’ rigged with 7 lines linked together to make it possible to lift together without
LADY NELSON - 18th Century Cutter
The cutter is a native British design and was developed originally by the smugglers
of Folkestone and surrounding areas. I did not take long for the Navy to appreciate
the merits of the cutter’s design and were employed in the Navy from the middle
of the eighteenth century to counter the smugglers. The cutter was designed for
speed, adopting an unusually large spread of sail for the size of vessel, deploying
both fore and aft and square sails on a single mast. Cutters excelled at patrol
and despatch duties due to their speed; however they were not suitable for close
inshore work due to their deep draught.
HM BOMB VESSEL GRANADO - 1742
The Bomb Vessel Granado was ordered on 14th september 1741 and the contract
was given to the Ipswich shipbuilder John Barnard. launched on 22nd June 1742.
her construction work was overseen by the great Navel surveyor and architect
Thomas slade who later designed Nelson’s Victory. Granado’s lines (and very
uncommon carving work for such a vessel) suggest she was originally intended as
a sloop. For the first 14 years of her operational career, Granado was indeed fitted
out as a sloop, not a bomb vessel.
From 1745 to 1748 Granado was mainly employed off the East coast of England
intercepting smugglers and privateers. With the impending arrival of The Seven
Years War the granado was recommissioned on 26th April 1756. It wasn’t until
July 1756 that Granado was converted to her original role of bomb vessel, where
she was refitted at Woolwich for Channel service. she was fitted with two 13 inch
mortars, 4pounder carriage guns and anti personnel swivel guns.
HMS PEGASUS- Swan Class 1776
h.M.s. Pegasus was the sixth vessel built of the swan Class of ship rigged sloop,
of which twenty five of the class were built from 1766 to 1780. Pegasus, as with the
entire swan class was designed by Williams and her construction was ordered by the
admiralty on 1st august 1775 to be built at sheerness Dockyard. The keel was laid in
May 1775 and launched on 27th December 1776. The swan class of 6th Rate sloops
were unusually attractive for the class of vessel, with not only very sleek hull lines
but also the unusual amount of decoration for the size of vessel. They were built just
before the admiralty issued orders that all vessels (especially lesser rates) were to
have the minimal amount of decoration and carvings to save any unnecessary costs,
due to the seemingly ever continuing war with France and other nations.
There is little remaining about h.M.s. Pegasus’ operational career, but from what little
evidence there is, Pegasus was commissioned mainly for convoy escort and dispatch
duty. Pegasus had a very short operation career, foundering off Newfoundland on
31st october 1777, her sister, h.M.s. Fly also foundered off Newfoundland some
years later in 1802. The original plans of the Pegasus still exist, and it is with these
plans the kit is based upon. The instruction booklet is very detailed, taking you
through every step of construction.
MERCURY - Russian Brig 1820
The Russian 20 gun brig Mercury was laid down in sevastopol on January 28, 1819.
She was designed as a patrol ship to guard the northern Caucasus coast. Built
of Crimean oak, with a shallow draught and equipped with oars, the Mercury was
launched on 7 May 1820 and broken up on November 9, 1857.
The Mercury fought in many important naval battles during her career; the most
notable being a battle between the Mercury (commanded by lieutenant a. Kazarsky)
and two other brigs against a whole fleet of fourteen Turkish ships, who were
returning from the shores of anatolia. The Turkish fleet were in no doubt who would
be the victors in this mismatched battle, but they did not take into account the sheer
heroism and determination of the smaller Russian fleet, The Mercury was able to
escape after a final and very powerful assault by the three brigs, ending the conflict.
Mercury is one of the most famous vessels of the Russian Navy.
The Mercury has 17 large plan sheets and over 40 page of construction booklet.
on 1st/2nd august 1798. Nelson’s Vanguard was designed by slade (of Victory fame)
and was one of fourteen 3rd rate 74 gun ships which formed the Arrogant class. The
ship was ordered on 9th December 1779 and the keel laid down at Deptford on 16th
october 1782. During this time, Britain was not at war so her build went ahead very
slowly, being launched on 6th March 1787.
HMS FLY - Swan Class 1776
The h.M.s. Fly was the fifth of the swan Class of ship rigged sloop, of 25 vessels
built from 1766 to 1780. Fly, as with the entire swan class was de-signed by
Williams and her construction was ordered by the admiralty on 1st august 1775 to
be built at sheerness Dockyard. The keel was laid in January 1776 and launched
on 14th september 1776. h.M.s. Fly was commissioned mainly for convoy escort
duty and dispatch duty. she did capture a French privateer, le Gleneur, off Portland
after a long chase. In 1800 she captured another French privateer, the Cutter
Trompeur off la hague. Fly continued convoy duties until she foundered and was
lost off Newfound-land during 1802.
The swan class were unusually attractive for the class of vessel, with not only very
sleek hull lines but also the unusual amount of decorations for the size of vessel.
The original plans of the Fly still exist, and on these plans the kit is drawn.
The rich ornamentation of the original vessel is accurately reproduced. Clearly
written instructions plus 12 sheets of detailed plans (3 of them dedicated to rigging)
pave the way to a beautiful model with exceptional detail.
