Welcome to Jetstar Magazine.
As a relatively young airline with a very modern fl eet,
we get great feedback from customers who really enjoy
fl ying on Jetstar’s planes.
Last month we had a glimpse of an all-new aircraft that will
join our fl eet — the Boeing 787 Dreamliner — when it touched
down in Australia for a visit. Jetstar will be the fi rst airline in
Australasia to fl y the 787 in 2013.
The 787 signals a new era in air travel. For starters, it’s 20%
more fuel-effi cient than similar-sized aircraft. It will deliver a great
experience for travellers, including bigger windows and reduced
jetlag thanks to more comfortable cabin pressure.
If you fl y with us often, you might have noticed new types of
seats in some of our existing aircraft. We’re gradually upgrading
seats right across our Airbus A320/1 fl eet to give you more
legroom and make your experience with us more comfortable.
SIZZLERS
THE SAND MAN
World IronMan champ Shannon Eckstein tells us
how he’s all beefed up for the next test of power,
skill, endurance and speed at the Kellogg’s
Nutri-Grain IronMan & IronWoman Series
WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING A THREE-
TIME WORLD IRONMAN CHAMPION
AND FOUR-TIME AUSTRALIAN
IRONMAN CHAMPION?
I never get tired of winning because
it’s such a great feeling, but it
seems like there’s always another
race coming up so it’s important
to enjoy the wins then move your
focus onto winning the next race.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE YOURSELF
PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY FOR
THE IRONMAN SERIES?
It takes me about 20 weeks to get
into peak fi tness. A usual day for me
starts with a 6km swim session at
5.30am. I do another session in the
EVENTS /// PROFILES /// FOOD /// DRINKS /// PLACES /// STYLE
gym, some yoga or running at 11am,
and then fi nish off with a beach
session on the board or ski in the
afternoon. I try to get right away from
training when I have some spare
time to keep myself mentally fresh.
IS THERE ANY SPECIAL DIET
THAT YOU PUT YOURSELF
THROUGH BEFORE A RACE?
I don’t really go by any diets. I’m
lucky that I can eat anything because
I burn so much energy in training. I
do like a steak and vegetable dish
the night before I race.
THE IRONMAN SERIES IS ONE
OF THE MOST GRUELLING
COMPETITIONS AROUND, HOW
DO YOU PUSH YOURSELF EACH
TIME YOU COMPETE?
The racing is usually the easy part
compared to the amount of training
we do. When the surf is big, it tends
to be a challenge against the ocean
rather than your competitors.
WHICH SEGMENT OF THE RACE IS
THE TOUGHEST FOR YOU?
The soft sand running is defi nitely the
toughest part of an IronMan race. The
burn in your legs is like nothing else.
Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain IronMan &
IronWoman Series is on 18 Dec–19
Australians love — beach, music,
ADVOCATES SUSTAINABILITY
BUT HOW EXACTLY?
We utilise everything from solar
power to having our generators
run on 100% bio diesel. We
use grey water treatment
facilities so all grey water from
the festival is collected onsite,
treated and then reused to
irrigate the site post event to
help recover from the impact
of the festival. Even down to
the decor and dressing of the
festival — we use as much
recycled material as possible.
FIT TO GO
SWIM
KING
Olympian and former swimming
champ Michael Klim smashed
world records throughout his
12-year international career. Out
of retirement in February 2011,
the comeback king reveals how
he balances work, family and his
passion for the pool
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO
BECOME A PRO SWIMMER?
When I watched the 1988 Olympic
Games and saw Duncan Armstrong
win gold!
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS
OF SWIMMING?
Swimming is a great form of
exercise as it develops your
muscular, cardiovascular and
overall endurance. Mentally, it’s
also a great release from everyday
routine. Swimming is very relaxing
— no mobile phone has yet been
invented that can ring in the pool!
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
TRAINING IN THE POOL AND AT
THE BEACH?
Training in the pool is very specifi c
and focused on quality, not quantity
of laps. At my old age of 34, making
sure that my body is well balanced
in terms of strength and power is
important. We focus on technique,
endurance, speed and general skill.
The benefi ts from training at the
beach are minimal in terms of form,
but mentally the benefi ts of being
EVENTS /// PROFILES /// FOOD /// DRINKS /// PLACES /// STYLE
outside are huge.
HOW DO YOU KEEP A STRONG
MIND AS WELL AS BODY?
Being passionate and enjoying
what you do keeps motivation
high, which makes it easy to have a
strong mind.
ANY TIPS FOR BALANCING WORK
AND FAMILY LIFE?
The key to juggling swimming,
spending time with my family and
directing my business Milk & Co is
planning and having good support
from family, friends, colleagues and
my coach. I’m learning to live in the
moment. If I’m with the kids, then
this is time with the kids — I leave
training and work behind.
BE BEACH SAFE
Swimming champ
Michael Klim
1. Swim between the lifeguards’ red and yellow fl ags.
2. Swim with a friend and never take your eyes off
your children when they’re in or near the water.
3. Don’t underestimate the ocean — use common sense!
4. Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat.
5. Never drink alcohol and swim.
6. Learn to be a competent swimmer.
LONG
SUMMER
DAYS
Celebrity stylist and fashion
designer Sophia Banks-Coloma
gives us quick and easy tips for
our summer prep.
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO LOOK
SUMMER READY?
To make your skin naturally
glowing, I recommend using a
moisturiser containing gradual
tanner, for the perfect summer
look. Invest in a pair of gold
sandals for your holiday and
always pack a maxi dress in
a bright colour or print for
an effortless look that can be
dressed up or down. A straw
bag will also help you look
beach ready.
WHAT TRENDS ARE HOT
THIS SUMMER?
Rainbow bright colours, in
particular emerald green and
bright blue, which are ideal for
injecting some fun into your
wardrobe. Now is the time to
add fl uoro into your summer. All
the celebrities are rolling around
in red jeans; simply add a basic
tee and wedge and you’re good
to go with this look. Wide leg
jeans are the new skinny jeans
and are fl attering to everyone.
Smaller sunglasses are the next
big thing for summer days — try
downsizing your current sunnies
for a bang-on-trend celebrity
look. Summer shoes are all
about the chunky wedge.
YOUNG PEEPERS
Recent research recommends that
children’s eyes need protection from
the sun from as young as six months
as they have bigger pupils and
less pigmented tissues. With these
colourful Frankie Ray sunglasses,
the little ones can start making a
fashion statement early! For 3 to
13 year olds, the lenses offer 100%
GARDENING
ON THE GO
Have your travel and eat it too
with a visit to a community garden
Have you ever been travelling and
found yourself missing the simple
joy of watering the pot of parsley
growing on your verandah? Or
picking a bowl of fresh salad greens
still warm from the sun straight from
the garden? By lending a hand for
a few hours in one of the hundreds
of community gardens around
Australia, I plan to have my travel
and eat it too.
The sound of squawking
chickens and the smell of sweet
peas lead me up the garden path
to Newcastle’s Fig Tree Community
Garden. Sandwiched between a
bowling green and a busy road, it’s
an oasis of edible greenery.
“There’s nothing better
than a pizza cooked here in our
wood-fi red oven on a summer
afternoon, topped with eggplant,
tomato, zucchini and herbs picked
straight from the garden,” says
Kristy Lee Grainger, on-site manager
at Fig Tree, as she hands me a
tray of cucumber and calendula
seedlings to plant.
I’m soon joined by small helpers
eager to get their hands in the
dirt, and their mouths around the
ripe mulberries dangling nearby at
perfect toddler head height.
“It’s pretty organic here. You’re
welcome to come and help out
anytime and then take produce
home with you. The only things we
sell are eggs from our chickens,”
says Grainger.
While once the domain of the
private backyard, gardening is
increasingly going public, with
communal plots springing up
faster than you can sprout alfalfa.
Community gardens are as varied
as their produce, ranging from
allotment gardens where individuals
tend their own plot, to “guerrilla
gardens” of ad hoc kerbside vegie
plantings. They can be large councilfunded
projects or community
ORGANIC
“It’s the
people”
Journalist Claire Dunn
checks on the vegies with
Imogen and Madeleine
initiatives on private land, with Fig
Tree’s “free-range” model typical of
the majority of community gardens
around Australia.
Organic gardening on communal
land is literally a growing interest,
with an increasing number of
people rolling up their sleeves to be
working bees.
“With larger houses and smaller
backyards, people often don’t have
the space to grow their own food.
We’re also seeing more people
wanting to eat fresh organic food
grown locally,” says Grainger.
The “eat local” mantra is
a cornerstone of community
gardeners, with many people looking
to minimise their ecological footprint
by reducing the transportation of
food over long distances, and the
use of petrochemicals.
“You can’t get more direct than
this!” says Grainger as she shows
the tribe of kids how to reach under
the clucky hen to collect the eggs.
According to Grainger, growing
community is just as important as
growing food at Fig Tree.
“It’s the social aspect that’s the
real drawcard to our weekly working
bees, our playgroup and regular
garden cook-ups.”
For volunteers Sean Hobson
and Mandy McDonald, it’s the
opportunity to share a laugh with
others in the sun, as well as the
variety of food, that keeps drawing
them back to Fig Tree.
“It’s the community spirit I love,
you get to meet so many different
people,” says Hobson. “We grow
some staples in our backyard but
we could never have this variety
at home.”
COMMUNITY GARDENS ARE AS
VARIED AS THEIR PRODUCE
“Unlike your own garden where
if you forget the watering it dies,
here someone else picks up the
slack!” says McDonald.
“In fact, I would love to do a
tour of community gardens around
Australia!” says McDonald.
Some community gardens,
like Melbourne’s CERES
Community Environment Park in
East Brunswick, are already on
the tourist map. Here, visitors
can volunteer in the extensive
permaculture gardens, see green
technology demonstrations, visit
the education centre and grab a
meal at the organic café.
Travellers are just as welcome
as locals at Fig Tree, according to
Grainger. “It’s a great opportunity
Brushing off my hands, I survey
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME
AN ENTREPRENEUR?
After experiencing shoulder pain
from a hand-me-down carrier,
I bought an ERGObaby Carrier
directly from the US manufacturer
and experienced a new-found
freedom and joy in being a mum —
hands-free, pain-free and my baby
content on my front, back or hip!
At this time I ran an architectural
practice with my husband. I was
fi nding it increasingly diffi cult to
juggle architectural site visits with
a young baby. My babywearing
passion soon outstripped my
commitment to an architectural
career, thereby heralding the
launch of Babes in Arms, a
company specialising in baby
In a sea of beauties,
Jen is no slouch in the
fl awless body, and sky-high heels — she
positively glows (as does her hard-to-miss
renowned celebrity jeweller Nic Cerrone).
About that body: she’s no slouch in the
gym. “I run four times a week, I do Pilates
twice a week, I even do sit-ups, too. I eat
healthily as well. Sure, I indulge occasionally,
but I really like looking after myself.”
Her regime, she is adamant, is devoid of
surgery of any sort. She dismisses recent
claims from a fellow beauty queen that she
has gone under the knife. “None of that
talk bothers me. Of course I look diff erent
from 2004. I was so young — that was
seven years ago!” she says, defl ecting any
speculation with a laugh.
She remains very close to her family.
Newcastle born and bred, Jens’ family still
lives in the area and she goes back as often
as possible. “I just love everything about
that place. My family, the memories I have
growing up there, how relaxed I feel when
I’m back. It truly is the best feeling in the
world. I love hanging with the Hawkos,” she
says with a hearty laugh.
And then, wedding preparations? “Oh
yes, wedding prep will be in full swing by
Twelve months ago, Queenslander
Cate Young had a light bulb
moment. She couldn’t fi nd any
sun-safe yet stylish swimwear
suitable for her family, so the
interior/fashion designer decided
to create her own. The result? A
collection of vintage-inspired,
fashionable rash shirts and
swimwear for men, women and
children that look great on the
beach and beyond.
“We wanted our products to be
are quick drying and breathable,”
says Young.
Few places turn it on in summer like
Auckland, when the skies shine bright blue
WORDS AMANDA LINNELL
The most popular
Auckland is at its fi nest come
summer; then, talk turns to
weekends out sailing, fi shing,
surfi ng, playing golf, cricket,
tennis... And in this harbourside
city, it’s all within easy reach.
HEAD FOR THE BEACH
Auckland is surrounded by sea — the
Manukau Harbour and Tasman Sea to
the west, and the Waitemata Harbour that
stretches out into the Pacifi c on the east
coast. Take a short walk from the CBD to
follow the stairs at the bottom of Hamilton
or Sentinel Roads.
Drive, bike, walk, run or rollerblade along
Tamaki Drive, which follows the waterfront
of Auckland’s eastern suburbs. You’ll be
spoilt for beaches where you can stop and
swim: Okahu Bay (where you’ll pass Kelly
Tarlton’s Underwater World, a great place
to pretend you’re in Antarctica with the
penguins), Kohimarama and St Heliers,
where ice creams are a must.
GO GREEN IN THE CITY
Spend an afternoon relaxing in
one of the city’s beautiful parks. At
more than 125ha, Cornwall Park
is a favourite. Families come to
picnic under the giant Algerian
oaks and Puriri trees, sizzle
sausages on the free barbecues,
and relax into the balmy evenings.
Take a walk around this park and
you’ll come across grazing cattle
and sheep, a pretty tearoom and
a spectacular view across the city
from the top of One Tree Hill.
Closer to the centre of the city
From the centre of the city you can jump
Drinking beer under the afternoon sun
in a pub’s garden bar is a Kiwi tradition
massive renovation, this is a must.
There’s an ever-changing array
of exhibitions with December
off ering up the works of the great
Frances Hodgkins.
TOAST THE GOOD LIFE
Drinking beer under the afternoon
sun in a pub’s garden bar is a
Kiwi tradition. The somewhat
grungy Kings Arms in Newton
is a classic and the home of live
music. Many of New Zealand’s top
bands started out here, so you may
catch a big act taking a trip down
memory lane or discover the next
big thing.
For something more chic, Sale
St bar in Freemans Bay is another
popular outdoor spot, especially
with the after-work crowd. With
its own microbrewery, bar food,
live bands and DJs, and the stylish
Cru restaurant run by respected
chef Nick Honeyman, there are
options aplenty here.
If you fancy a short drive — or
boat ride — from town, then The
Riverhead situated in Auckland’s
052
upper Waitemata Harbour is great for a pub
lunch. With its outdoor decks, jetty, friendly
staff and good grub (try the venison and
kawakawa pie) you can easily while away
an afternoon here.
DINE ALFRESCO
For eating outdoors, you can’t go wrong at
Soul Bar & Bistro at Auckland’s Viaduct.
Grab a seat on the balcony and work your
way through the delicious menu, which has
a strong focus on fi sh.
Another great place to people-watch is
SPQR on trendy Ponsonby Road. Nab an
outdoor table, a bottle of crisp sauvignon
blanc and share a platter. Further along,
you’ll fi nd Prego with tables sprawled
around a courtyard. This is the place for
unpretentious Italian food; try a woodfi red
pizza or the delicious linguine marinara.
THE POWER
With perfect powder snow, fantastic resorts and unique cultural
attractions, Japan is a winter wonderland like no other
OF POWDER
WORDS RACHAEL OAKES-ASH
PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS HOCKING
Japan is known for super light,
super dry, and super abundant
powder snow. Throw in more
than 500 ski resorts and a mere
two-hour time diff erence between
Sydney and Tokyo and you’ve just found
the perfect location for a snow holiday this
northern winter.
The ski resorts of Japan are unlike
any others in the world. Expect to fi nd
slope-side vending machines selling
hot coff ee in a can, mid-mountain onsen
(hot spring) and the occasional monkey
scampering across the slopes.
Most ski resorts off er a mix of
accommodation, from traditional
Japanese-style rooms with futon mattresses,
tatami mats and rice pillows through to full
Western-style accommodation with ensuites.
You can choose how much of the Japanese
culture you would like to immerse yourself
in while schussing down some of
the most pristine slopes around.
MYOKO KOGEN
Myoko Kogen is known as the
“heart of Japan” and features a
combination of ski resorts. The
family-oriented destination serves
up a mix of wide-open gentle
slopes and a terrain park for
freeskiers and boarders. It’s also
home to the longest run in Japan
at 8.5km.
There’s backcountry skiing
for the more advanced skier and
boarder at the smaller resort area
of Seki Onsen, which is known
for very high snowfall (up to 14m
a season). Myoko is not known as
a party destination, but there are
a handful of bars and restaurants
HAPPO ONE, HAKUBA
Hakuba Valley is home to 10 ski and
Nagano, that the 1998 Winter Olympics
Hakuba Village in either the Wadano or
Echoland areas. It provides easy access to
the ski and snowboard slopes of the most
popular Happo One (pronounced oh-nay)
resort from Wadano and excellent après ski
options in Echoland.
The Japanese Alps provides a stunning
alpine backdrop that serves up more
than 200 super groomed runs in the 10
resorts combined, plus some of the best
backcountry skiing in Japan for the more
advanced skier. There are a number of
guiding companies that take small groups
The resort features a series of
VICTOR HARBOR,
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
In the summer months, the
Fleurieu Peninsula’s Victor
Harbor is one of Australia’s best
family seaside resort towns. An
hour’s drive south of Adelaide,
Victor Harbor has some of the
state’s most striking beaches, but
it off ers so much more for families.
You can ride the famous historic
horse-drawn tram, The Causeway,
across a 600m-long bridge to
Granite Island, take a surfi ng
lesson or ride a heritage train —
the SteamRanger. There’s also
family-orientated entertainment,
like Girdler Family Amusements
fun park or there’s Urimbirra
Wildlife Experience, where
families can get up close with
kangaroos, emus, dingos
and wombats.
KANGAROO ISLAND,
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
More often lauded as a destination
for romance, Kangaroo Island
should be billed as the ultimate
family holiday destination. This
is, after all, Australia’s version
of the Galapagos Islands — it’s
a zoo without fences, with kids able to see
everything from wallabies to echidnas to
koalas and even gigantic wedge-tailed eagles.
But it’s what the ocean off ers that will
dazzle children of all ages — you can
walk among sea lion colonies at Seal
Bay Conservation Park, see fur seals at
Admiral’s Arch and watch dolphins surf
your bow on one of many boat trips off ered
for families; try KI Marine Adventures.
BUSSELTON,
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
The seaside town of Busselton — two and a
half hours south of Perth — is the ultimate
family getaway with its safe turquoise
waters and incredibly long, white sandy
beaches. North and south of Busselton
there’s 30km of beaches within Geographe
Bay that are ideal for swimming, snorkelling,
diving and sailing. Busselton also off ers the
southern hemisphere’s longest wooden pier
at 1.8km — board the train to reach the end
then view over 300 marine species in the
waters eight metres below at the underwater
observatory. There’s also a beachfront fun
park, Nautical Lady, with fl ying foxes, racing
cars and waterslides, or families can also
take camel rides or go kayaking. The region
is sprinkled with campgrounds and caravan
parks, and is just beside the famed Margaret
River wine region.
Bruny Island could be Australia’s perfect
Sailing Across
the Paddock
For the crews taking on the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race
challenge on Boxing Day, the past year has been one spent honing
skills and steeling nerves in readiness to tackle the sailors’ Everest
WORDS FIONA HARPER
Despite her youth,
Jessica Watson
knows well the mindnumbing
fatigue that
comes from coaxing
a tiny boat over
terrifying liquid mountains that
tower above the mast. Screaming
salt-laden winds that blow the
moisture from eye sockets. The
gritty, caking salt that acts like
sandpaper against raw skin. The
slap of cold water that gushes
down the neckline of wet weather
gear while grappling with fl ogging
sails and dangerously whipping
ropes in the dead of the night on a
bucking, heaving foredeck.
All the while, trying to eat,
sleep, navigate and keep your
wits about you while being
tossed about in an odorous, damp
cocoon. For some, it sounds like
hell. For hard-core yachties, it’s
what competing in the Rolex
Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is all
about. Crossing Hobart’s Derwent
River fi nish line for many is akin
to conquering the sailors’ Everest.
After stepping ashore at
Circular Quay in mid-2010,
having sailed solo, non-stop and
unassisted around the world, on
wobbly legs that hadn’t touched
dry land for seven months,
16-year-old Watson had already
achieved so much, surprising
many who doubted her ability.
She wasted little time making it
clear she was no lightweight sailor
despite her slight frame, setting
her sights on further adventures.
Denied the opportunity to
compete in one of the sailing
world’s greatest yacht races last
year due to her age, Watson will
skipper a youthful team onboard
Ella Bache Another Challenge
(EBAC) in this year’s Hobart race.
All 11 crewmembers are aged
between 18 and 21 years, only
two of whom have notched up a
previous “Hobart”. Sure, it’s only
630-odd nautical miles, a mere
drop in the ocean compared to a
circumnavigation. But the course
traverses one of the most fearsome
stretches of water in the world:
the Bass Strait, mockingly derided
as the “paddock” by old salts
since the race began back in the
post-war 1940s.
“The Rolex Sydney to Hobart is
every young sailor’s dream and it
will be an amazing experience. I’m
confi dent our crew will be able to
handle ourselves out there. We’re
realistic about the challenges. We
know it’s the toughest race in the
Watson will skipper a youthful team
world, but we’ll give ourselves
the best possible preparation,”
says Watson as the crew gathers
in Sydney to begin an intensive
12-week training campaign.
EBAC will compete in the hotly
contested one-design Sydney 38
division, a sort of Grand Prix race
among similar yachts within the
main race. Leading the fl eet for
line honours will be fi ve-time
winner and defending champion
Bob Oats maxi Wild Oats XI,
though other contenders are likely
to be Investec Loyal and Rambler
100. Fleet sizes vary each year,
though about 90–100 yachts are
likely to start this year.
The bragging rights that come
from completing a “Hobart” are
substantial. For more than 60
years, sailors have turned right
after exiting Sydney Heads,
destination Constitution Dock,
Hobart. Many failed to make
it. Mostly, boat or gear failure
GO GUIDE //
GO GUIDE
prevents yachts completing
the course.
The tiny town of Eden on
the southern New South Wales
coast has become the unoffi cial
“point of no return”. It’s the last
safe harbour before crossing the
paddock. Lives have been lost
attempting to sail to Hobart. Who
can forget the catastrophic race of
1998 when six sailors perished,
fi ve yachts sank and only 44 of the
115 starters made it to Storm Bay?
As Boxing Day dawns and
crews mentally steel themselves
for the sail southwards, tens of
thousands of sightseers gather
on headlands all along Sydney
Harbour. For non-sailors, the
Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race
off ers the perfect excuse to pack a
picnic lunch fi lled with Christmas
Day leftovers and enjoy the
spectacular harbour at its best.
Onboard the yachts heading to
Hobart, however, the crowds are
barely noticed as crews focus their
sights fi rmly upon the challenging
days ahead of them. For one young
sailor making her Hobart debut,
leading one of the youngest crews
ever to take up the challenge,
there’s no doubt she will rise to
the occasion.
summer celebrations
on the Sunshine Coast
The laid-back tropical
cool cocktails, a chilled glass of
white wine or a cold beer all the
the beachside holiday towns come
alive with music, festivals and
summer parties. Here’s how to
celebrate the sunny season with
friends and family.
FOLLOW THE MUSIC
Groove to the beat of new music
a stream of talented local and
national musicians showcase
original live music, from 6pm to
3am Wednesdays to Sundays;
Another relaxing spot to chill
musicians entertain while you chat
with friends over coff ee and cake,
from 2pm to 5pm on Sundays. If
you fancy something stronger, the
café also has a BYO licence.
PARTY TIME
Celebrate the season with a
dance party in the park, where
Catching the sunrise
FROM SEA TO
SUMMIT
Take a break from busy Bali with an island adventure
and a sunrise climb up a sacred mountain
WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY MATT MACKAY
Fresh from landing in Bali, I
arrive at Sanur Beach having
just missed the fast boat to the
island of Nusa Lembongan,
12km off the east coast of Bali.
Soon, the locals, tourists and
I are aboard the slow boat arriving 90
minutes later at Jungut Batu beach.
Accommodation on the island ranges
from AU$5 a night for basic rooms to
AU$200+ for villas on the hill. I haven’t
booked anything, but after a short
stroll I stumble across Secret Garden
Bungalows. Set amid a beautiful tropical
garden and only 50m from the beach,
they off er very comfortable rooms for
just AU$15 a night.
My fi rst priority is a surf. Directly
in front of Jungut Batu Beach are three
breaks that cater for all levels of surfi ng:
“Shipwrecks” and “Lacerations” at
the northern end are best suited for
intermediate to experienced surfers,
while “Playgrounds”, at the southern
end, is perfect for beginners and kids.
At just 4.5km long and 2.5km
wide, the island is best explored
by bicycle or moped, which can
be rented at most hotels and
guesthouses. I hire a bicycle for
AU$3 a day and, with no cars or
traffi c to worry about, it’s a relaxing
and safe way to get around.
Many of Lembongan’s best
attractions lie off shore and
numerous dive operators ferry
tourists to the best spots. Tim
Birkett, the owner of Secret Garden
Bungalows, is an avid diver who
also runs Big Fish Diving, a PADI &
SSI dive resort.
I join a dive group going to Manta
Cove, a new dive site Tim has
recently discovered off Nusa Penida.
Manta Cove is a shallow bay with a
spectacular backdrop of towering
vertical cliff s. While underwater
I eyeball a hawksbill turtle and
a small reef shark. It isn’t long
before the stars arrive — a group

You don’t need to dive
to experience the
of black manta rays glide around us like
giant underwater bats. It’s a wonderful and
surreal experience.
But you don’t need to dive to experience
the island’s marine treasures. There’s
snorkelling off the beach, and many locals
off er boat rides through the mangroves
which boasts 13 diff erent tree species, 30
birds species, lizards and crabs.
Gunung Agung is a sacred
mountain, so access is
restricted during religious
ceremonies, particularly in
March and April. The climb
should only be attempted
during the dry season,
May to October. The two
most popular routes depart
from Pura Pasar Besakih
You’ll need a guide, warm
Collecting seaweed is a means
of income for many locals
smattering of simple warungs
(cafés) in the village behind
Jungut Batu. Fresh seafood is at
the top of many menus each day
and it doesn’t get any fresher or
tastier than at Nyoman’s Warung.
Nyoman’s husband, Made, goes
spearfi shing each day and the
cheerful Nyoman grills the fresh
fi sh over hot coals and serves it
with her delicious spicy sambal
and sautéed green vegies.
During my Bali visit, I’ve also
decided to climb the imposing
peak of Gunung Agung before
I leave. Two of the island’s most
important temples, Pura Besakih
and Pura Pasar Agung, sit perched
high on its southern slopes. Rising
to 3,014m, Agung’s peak can be
viewed from just about anywhere
on the island on a clear day.
I arrive in Ubud on the day
of the full moon with a forecast
of clear skies. My good friend,
Dewa, at Bali Emerald Touring,
has arranged a driver and guide
for the climb that night. I’ve only
managed a couple of hours’ sleep
when Dewa arrives at 12.30am
to drive us to Pura Pasar Agung
Temple perched 1,500m high
up on the southern slopes of
Gunung Agung.
The Balinese
On the way, Dewa explains that
Gunung Agung is Bali’s highest and
holiest mountain. “It’s home of the
Hindu gods and dwelling place of
the ancestral spirits, it dominates
the spiritual and physical life of the
island. The Balinese consider Mount
Agung to be the centre of the world
and all temples in Bali point towards
this holy mountain.”
We arrive at the temple car park
at about 2.30am, when the cool air
quickly wakes us from our slumber.
Our guide, Made, is waiting for us
in the car park and soon has us all
gasping for breath after the initial
climb up the steep fl ight of steps to
the temple’s entrance. He gives us a
much-needed breather when he lights
off erings of incense sticks and prays to
the gods for a safe journey.
It seems the gods are placated as the
clouds lift and the full moon shines
brightly, making the temple’s intricate
stone carvings visible. However, we
INSTRUCTIONS
The objective of Sudoku is to fi ll in the
missing squares so that each row, column and
3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through to 9.
To get you started, here are a few tactics...
Scan each horizontal and vertical band
consisting of three 3x3 boxes. It’s often
easiest to start in a spot with the most
numbers already given. If you can fi nd the
same number in two rows, you know that
number must be in the third (the same goes
for columns). Now see which intersecting
rows and columns can be eliminated because
they also contain that number. (This method
is called slicing and dicing.)
Some Sudoku fans like to pencil in
possible answers in the corners of individual
squares. Once you have a few numbers fi lled
in, you may also fi nd it handy to jot down a
list of missing numbers for each row, column
and box.
Darjé Diamond Fusion offers you the latest
breakthrough in diamond simulation
Diamond Fusion is made using real diamond in it’s
composition, giving it the same look and feel without
the price. Diamond Fusion is composed of a non
precious core crystal which is then combined with
infused amorphous diamond. During the creation,
the core crystal is wrapped and layered with tiny
diamond crystals. It is then put into a chamber of
intense heat and pressure. This process infuses the
diamond crystals into the upper layer of the seed,
fusing the diamond crystals together resulting in the
finished product. Darjé jewellery is created in our
own workshop and uses a combination of natural
diamond and diamond fusion in it’s many designs.
Warlpiri kids
get school-ready
With the support of Starkids and World Vision, kids are getting
school-ready in Australia’s Indigenous Warlpiri communities
good education provides
A
the best start to life.
Despite this, many
Indigenous children
continue to battle numerous
obstacles in order to achieve
national literacy and numeracy
benchmarks. In order to address the
gap of Indigenous disadvantage,
education must be prioritised.
In the remote Tanami Desert in
the Northern Territory, the Warlpiri
communities hold their culture
and traditions strong. Despite this,
education outcomes have been
poor, with lack of support for the
vital transition from early childhood
to formal schooling identifi ed as
a key factor.
Wanting to address these issues,
four of the Warlpiri communities
invited World Vision to partner
with them in identifying and
implementing solutions, and in
August 2008, the Starkids-supported
Warlpiri Early Childhood Care and
Development project was born.
LEARNING THROUGH CULTURE
AND COMMUNITY
From the outset the project has
aimed to combine two ways of
learning: the “Yapa” (Indigenous)
way, and the “Kardiya” (non-
Indigenous) way, with traditional
Warlpiri language and culture an
important part of the curriculum.
The playgroups provide a welcoming space
for parents and their young children
A key aspect of the project is
ensuring the Warlpiri community
members remain at the centre of
the project and, rather than bring in
external childcare staff, the project
trains local women who then set up
community playgroups.
The playgroups provide a
welcoming space for parents and
their young children. While parents
have access to information about
early childhood care, education
and nutrition, children are able
to familiarise themselves with
the social and learning aspects of schooling in a
non-threatening environment.
STARKIDS
Community playgroups
familiarise children with the
social and learning aspects
of formal schooling
READY FOR SCHOOL AND READY FOR LIFE
The Warlpiri communities are noticing a positive
fl ow-on effect from improved early childhood care and
education. One local shire councillor says now young
Warlpiri kids are starting their formal education on the
right foot. “Things they learn in playgroup help them
settle into school; it’s really important so a child can
feel comfortable and learn properly.”
The Warlpiri communities are committed to giving
their children a better start to life and hope this can bring
them closer to developing stronger communities.
Does smelling sweet
mean having to
clog your pores?
Australian-owned Body Crystal is an eff ective
deodorant that works by killing the bacteria
on your skin which actually cause odour. The
double mineral salts in Body Crystal create an
invisible layer of protection on the surface of
the skin – an eff ective and safe way of stopping
odour before it starts.
Body Crystal is safe for sensitive skin and
leaves you feeling fresh and clean all day.
Body Crystal deodorants are available unscented or with fresh fragrances
from Coles Supermarkets (deodorant section) and most good health food
shops and pharmacies.
BEST BREAKFAST:
Aubergines in South
Fremantle — it’s well known for a
great brekky and coffee among the
locals. You can take your furry
friends too as there’s always a treat
on offer from the owner or one of
the friendly staff.
GREAT PLACE FOR DINNER:
Harvest in North Fremantle
offers a fabulous eclectic
degustation menu and a great wine
selection; sitting out in the cosy
twilight-lit courtyard is something
quite special.
Australians share their
favourite domestic
destinations
SURVIVAL TIP FOR
TOURISTS: Sunscreen and a
hat are essential as we’re never
short of sunshine.
BEST PLACE TO PARTY
WITH THE GANG: Little
Creatures in Fremantle for its
laidback atmosphere, boat harbour
outlook and a selection of locally
brewed beer.
INSIDER’S TIP: Escape to
the south-west to Margaret
River for some of Western
Australia’s best award-winning
wines, and amazing variety of
restaurants and art galleries.
MUST-BUY GIFT: A Morrison
garment — we design and
manufacture in Western Australia
and have stores across Australia and
AUSTRALIAN ADVENTURES
online at morrisonshop.com. We
also offer one-on-one styling where
our stylist can assist you in creating
seasonal collections to suit your
individual shape, style and lifestyle.
MUST EATS: Flip Side
Burgers in North Fremantle
offers homemade burgers, even if
you’re vegetarian. They’re
particularly yummy after a day at
the beach.
BEST IDEA FOR A FAMILY
OUTING: Rottnest Island,
known for its natural beauty,
spectacular fl ora and abundant
marine life, has great family
facilities and the best beaches for
kids to safely swim and snorkel — a
visit to The Basin is a must. It’s all
clear waters and soft white sand.
BEST BREAKFAST: Harvest
at Newreybar — the food
and atmosphere are fantastic, and
service is friendly. Most of the
ingredients used are freshly
sourced and local. The breads and
pasta are made on-site.
GREAT PLACE FOR DINNER:
I enjoy the food, fantastic
river view and friendly staff at By the
River, located on the river in Ballina.
There’s live jazz music every Sunday
afternoon with delicious tapas.
Spending time on the
the coastline by bike
MUST-BUY (MONEY NO
OBJECT!): An Integrity
Candles Cauldron, which is
incredible to see and creates a
warm and magical atmosphere in a
garden. Linda and Frank handcraft
these hardened wax cauldrons
which rest on iron stands holding
100-hour candles. You can have
it custom-made.
LOCAL DELICACY: Our native
locally and organically grown
fi nger limes. We grow a few
varieties including the jali red which
adds an incredible colour to the
bubbles of lime juice, which oozes
from the fruit. Perfect on fi sh, in
sauces and to add zing to cocktails.
Owner of Tharen’s and author of
BEST BREAKFAST: Trio in
Bondi. The views are
breathtaking and I’ve never been let
down by the food.
BEST NIGHT OUT: By far the
best night out is at Tharen’s
Fancy Dress Restaurant and Bar in
Kings Cross, a night fi lled with magic,
drag queens, costumes and dinner.
BEST BUY FOR UNDER
AU$50: The Lad’s Chef
cookbook. A great all-round guide
for young guys who are fresh out of
home. An ideal gift for Christmas or
just because!
SURVIVAL TIP FOR
TOURISTS: If you’re
travelling with mates, catch taxis
instead of public transport, as it’s
often cheaper and quicker.
LOCAL DELICACY: Sydney
Rock oysters are amazing
with a gentle squeeze of lemon.
BEST PLACE TO HANG OUT
WITH THE LOCALS: North
Bondi on a hot summer’s day.
