FREE MOVIES!!!!
2013 Global Lens: June 6- August 15, 2013
One of my favorite things in Palm Springs during the hot summer is
going every thursday evening to the Annenberg Theatre to see FREE
foreign films in the cool beautiful state of the art theater!!! Palm Springs
is the city of film festivals and this one is absolutely free.
Once again, the Palm Springs Art Museum will offer free films in its Annenberg
Theater every Thursday at 6 p.m. from June 6 through Sept.
19 (there is no film on July 4). The first ten films will be the 2013 Global
Lens series of films, organized by the Global Film Initiative. This series
showcases films from countries not typically associated with film making,
and features young and upcoming directors. This year, the Global
Lens series includes films from Brazil, Chile, China, Egypt, Kazakhstan,
India, Iran, Iraq, Mexico, and Serbia. Each film is selected for its
authentic voice, strong cinematic visuals, and unique cultural perspective,
opening a window to the diverse world in which we live (each film
includes subtitles in English). This is the fifth year the museum has
screened the popular Global Lens series.
Following these ten foreign films, the museum has once again teamed
up with the Palm Springs International Film Society to offer five Classic
Comedies. This is the third year that the museum and the Film Society
have offered films as a joint partnership.
There is no cost to attend the films and seats are available on a first
come, first served basis. The museum is open on Thursday nights with
AIRLINE FEE INCREASES!!!
It seems every week we are getting the shaft from the airline industry!
They want to charge for everything from using the bathroom to having
an aisle seat. Last week, United airlines increased the fee for changing
a flight from $150 to $200 for domestic flights. Then US Airways matched
the fee increase.
The $150 fee change has become industry standard and is charged by
the majority of domestic carriers. The only bright spot is Southwest,
which does not charge a fee to change flights. Both United and US Airways
now charge more -- between $250 and $300 -- for flight changes to
Europe and Asia.
TRAVEL SEARCH ENGINES
If you have read my column before you know I am not a fan of booking
your travel through travel search engines like Travelocity or Orbits or any
of them. I am say definitely use them to search for the prices the airlines
are charging and which airlines fly to your destination and to see the flight
schedules. BUT…then call the airline directly and book your flight.
When the internet was in its infancy you could score some amazing last
minute deals but now when you search you find they all have the same
prices. The competition has been lost! So if you do book through one of
the large search engines and have a problem while you are on your trip
it will be harder to get the help you need because the airlines considers
them a third party vendor. So after you have picked your which flight you
want call the airline directly and book. You will have a better chance of
resolving any travel problems that might occur especial if your trip gets
canceled and you need to switch to another airline immediately.
free admission between 4-8 p.m. and is always 75 degrees, which offers a
great way to stay cool while enjoying high quality films.
The first film, June 13th, will be: ABOUT 111 GIRLS
Synopsis: A government official travels across Iranian Kurdistan with his
driver and a young guide on a mission to stop 111 young Kurdish women
from committing suicide in protest against conditions that have left them
spinsters. Wistful longing mingles with dreamlike desire and absurdist
humor as the three travelers meander helplessly in a land riddled with
contradictions. (79 minutes)
