wHite-sand beacHes, sparkling
blue waters and summer’s red-
Flowering poHutukawa trees will
make any picture a postcard.
The eastern bays are a magnet for boaties,
wind and kite-surfers, anglers, kayakers and
just about anyone taking a trip out on the
Hauraki Gulf.
As you head east from the city, coastal suburbs
cluster round sandy bays and coves. Beyond lie
the open beaches of Maraetai and Beachlands.
This is the Pohutukawa Coast, with its golden
sands, sheltered waters and views out to Waiheke
and other Hauraki Gulf islands. Every turn in the
road reveals a perfect swimming or picnic stop.
There are plenty of great cafés and vineyard
restaurants too.
Inland, there’s historic Howick Village, the
vineyards of the Clevedon hills and the Clevedon
Farmers’ and Village Markets on Sundays. The
country settlement of Whitford also offers two
of the country’s best gardens - Ayrlies and the
Whitford Bird Garden.
All this less than an hour from downtown Auckland.
