Wine tasting on Waiheke Island
Waiheke Island
Map page 74
I have: No time When you have only a few hours to spare, book a
seat on a wine, food or sightseeing tour and explore the island with a local. The
guides share stories of life on the island and point out hidden secrets. Sample
award-winning wines in the beautiful vineyards, taste delicious local produce,
see impressive local artwork, enjoy the stunning scenery and learn more about
Waiheke Island. Stop for a gourmet lunch at one of the island’s top vineyard
restaurants or at a village beachside café.
I have: A Bit of time Hire scooters or bikes and explore the ‘island
of wine’. Take in panoramic sea views and the rolling vine-covered hills while
enjoying a drop at one of the top notch wineries. Or make a day of it, with laser
claybird shooting, archery and more. Finish the day with a leisurely stroll along
the white sand at Oneroa Beach, or take a dip in the ocean before heading to one
of the local eateries in Oneroa for a delicious bite to eat.
I have: PleNty of time Pick up a rental car and explore the eastern
end of Waiheke Island. Connells Bay Sculpture Park is where art and nature unite
to create unique and thought-inspiring sculptures. Spend a few hours exploring
the tunnels and gun emplacements of Stony Batter – an historic fort from WWII
– before moving down to the popular summertime destination of Onetangi Beach.
The 2km stretch of white sand is perfect for all sorts of beach fun, so bring the
cricket bat and volleyball with you. If you’d rather simply relax, find a spot on the
sand under a sprawling pohutukawa tree and take in the stunning scenery.
