TOP RANKED
IN EFFICIENCY,
ACCOUNTABILITY,
AND LEADERSHIP BY:
FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY
1. Leading Efficiency Among All U.S. Nonprofits: Forbes Magazine cited Direct Relief as one of only 11
charities with a 100 percent efficiency rating. In 2005, The Chronicle of Philanthropy ranked Direct Relief as the
51st largest charity and among only 32 organizations of the 400 listed whose overall fundraising expenses were
0.3 percent or lower of total support raised. Consumers Digest listed Direct Relief as one of only five charitable
organizations nationwide that received a 99 percent or better efficiency rating. The NonProfit Times has recognized
Direct Relief as one of the “Top 100” U.S. charities. Worth Magazine named Direct Relief one of “America’s Best 100
Charities” for efficiency and quality of work and Charity Navigator gave Direct Relief its highest rating of four stars.
2. Strict Board Oversight and Governance: Direct Relief’s operations are conducted in conformance
with an annual operating budget that is vetted and approved by its 29-member Board of Directors, which includes:
several former and current CEOs/COOs or top executives of leading U.S. and international companies, MBAs from
schools including Harvard and Stanford, executives with over 150 collective years in the investment business,
two physicians, and three accomplished attorneys. All Board members are unpaid and sign conflict-of-interest
agreements. The Executive and Finance Committees meet monthly to review financial activities, investments, and
overall programmatic performance.
3. Transparency: Direct Relief pioneered open Shareholders’ Meetings for all its investors (every person
who has contributed money, material, or time to Direct Relief) to brief them on how their investment was spent.
Direct Relief’s audited financial statements and its IRS Form 990 (tax return) are published on Direct Relief’s
website: www.DirectRelief.org.
4. Accountability: The Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance certified Direct Relief as being
in compliance with the “Standards for Charitable Accountability” – a rigorous 20-point program covering board
governance and oversight, program effectiveness, compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP),
and fundraising techniques (see www.give.org).
5. Independent Audit: An audit committee, comprised of both non-Director and Director members, retains and
meets with an independent public accounting firm that conducts the annual audit. The committee also meets with
the auditor, independent of any staff including the CEO and Controller, to discuss findings. The Board’s Executive
and Finance Committees meet monthly to review performance against budget and conduct general oversight. Direct
Relief’s Controller is a Certified Public Accountant with over 16 years of professional experience, including significant
work in the fields of non-profit accounting and financial management.
6. Adherence to Nationwide Standards: Direct Relief is registered with the appropriate authority in every
U.S. state that requires a registration for soliciting support or conducting operations. Direct Relief believes this is
important as people increasingly research organizations on the web and make online charitable donations.
7. Staff Compensation: The compensation of all Direct Relief staff members is benchmarked each year
against a survey of non-profit compensation levels throughout Southern California, similar non-profit organizations
nationwide, and publicly available compensation data. All staff salaries, including that of the CEO, are consistent
with those of the regional non-profit sector for similar positions. The CEO’s performance and compensation is
reviewed annually by the Board of Director’s compensation committee.
8. Expanding Assistance and Increasing Productivity: From 1998 through 2005, Direct Relief has
expanded its material assistance program by 329 percent (from $27.8 million to $119.4 million) while maintaining
strict cost controls. In 1998, each dollar spent generated $14.30 in aid; in fiscal year 2005 each dollar spent
generated $28.24 in aid. In 2005, the organization also has provided cash grants of more than $8.7 million to
health facilities in tsunami-affected areas in Asia and hurricane-affected Gulf Coast states. All administrative costs
for these grants, which were made possible by unsolicited specified contributions were absorbed by Direct Relief.
9. Board Leadership — Personal Financial Investment: In fiscal year 2005, the volunteer Board of
Directors and International Advisory Board personally contributed enough to cover a large part of fundraising and
administrative costs of the organization. Every member of the Board made a personal financial contribution to the
organization.
10. Board Leadership — Strategic Planning: The Strategic Planning Committee of the Board prepares
three-year plans containing measurable goals and objectives, which serve as the basis for the annual operating
budget, staffing levels, and capital investments.
11. Board Leadership — Future Financial Security: The Board has created a Board Restricted
Investment Fund to ensure future financial security. With a goal of obtaining and maintaining two years’ operating
expenses, the Fund is intended to balance current and future needs and provide annual support for operations, but
not permanently restrict funds that may be required to provide humanitarian assistance.
12. Trusted by Leading Corporations: In 2005, product donations during the period January 1 to October
31 have increased 65 percent compared to 2004 levels from the same period – $108.2 million in 2004 vs.
$179.2 million in 2005.
13. The Importance of Year-End Donations: Direct Relief typically receives more than one-third of its total
contributions in the final eight weeks of the calendar year. Operating at a deficit for 50 weeks a year, the organization
relies heavily on year-end contributions to meet annual operating expenses.

Thank you for taking a moment to learn about Direct Relief International.
These pages explain how and where we work, why we do it, the effects it has on
people’s lives, and what it costs.
Also listed, with deepest thanks, are our Directors, members of our Advisory
Board, and the people and companies whose support paid for not only the
printing of this publication but everything described in it.
Throughout the world, even on a good day, people who are poor have a difficult
challenge obtaining basic health services needed to enjoy the wonders of life.
This past year has been marked by several extraordinary natural disasters
that have received much attention and many slow-motion disasters that have
not. These tragedies have called upon our organization to respond both more
broadly and more deeply than ever before in our 57-year history.
We know that the effects of large-scale natural disasters are profound on the
long-term health of the people and societies that are affected. Our response
efforts are conducted through local channels and aimed at strengthening the
key health facilities in affected areas – whether in our own Gulf States or in
developing countries – that will bear the burden long after the headlines fade.
As an organization, we are rated on things that can be counted – efficiency,
fundraising and administrative expenses, programmatic metrics, financial
growth, etc. These are important, and I am pleased to report that independent
organizations continue to rank us among the best in the United States. But a
report card cannot capture the character and motivation of our organization or
its intrinsic value any more than a student’s report card can capture his or hers
as a person.
The financial and business aspects of our organization are not our sole focus
– helping people is. But we want you to understand how we think about and
spend any resource that is entrusted to us. The compassionate instincts of people
are enormous and wonderful, which we are privileged to see every day. Our goal
is to honor that compassion and generosity by making them count in the most
pragmatic and meaningful way to help lift people up.
As a result of Johnson & Johnson’s partnership with Direct Relief International,
nearly one million people in Haiti, Jamaica, and Grenada affected by last
year’s extreme storm season in the Caribbean received critical health services.
Johnson & Johnson’s generous grant allowed us to deliver more than $18
million in medical material aid throughout the year to the people who needed it
as they were rebuilding after the storm. The significant effects of our work on
individuals, families, and communities are difficult to quantify. People whose lives
were already difficult were made even more vulnerable by the devastation of the
historic hurricane season. We know that children suffering from infections or
malnutrition, women experiencing difficult pregnancies, and the men and women
afflicted by pain due to daily physical labor or chronic illnesses, received the
medical attention they needed to regain good health.
Logistics and Transport Partnership Expands
Humanitarian Aid Worldwide
FedEx has provided free transport services to Direct Relief International for over
twelve years. This extraordinary partnership has helped Direct Relief deliver more
urgent medical assistance to disaster-stricken and impoverished communities without
consuming more money. FedEx was one of Direct Relief’s first corporate partners
to make a major commitment to join the international relief effort in South Asia by
helping us deliver $2.7 million worth of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies to
the tsunami-affected region. Direct Relief was also able to respond immediately to
Hurricane Katrina after FedEx assisted the organization in delivering $5.5 million
worth of medical relief to the Gulf Coast. FedEx’s substantial commitment has
helped millions of people receive critically needed medical care. Through the support
of FedEx and other major partners, Direct Relief is able to leverage its small cash
budget to an extraordinary degree, furnishing essential medical provisions to serve
millions of people and support fragile health systems at low cost.
MEDICAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS
1. Our Approach: Direct Relief is nonsectarian and privately
financed. Our medical assistance programs equip health professionals
working in resource-poor communities to better meet the challenges of
diagnosing, treating, and caring for people, without regard to politics,
religion, gender, race, or ability to pay.
2. Our Partners: Direct Relief’s network of partners includes more
than 550 healthcare facilities and organizations located in over 70
countries. Partner facilities range from small rural outposts to large
hospitals serving thousands each day. Local chapters of international
service clubs, including Rotary International and Lions Clubs
International, often are key partners in providing financial support,
references, and in-country logistical help.
3. How We Select Partners: Partner institutions and
organizations are selected through a rigorous qualification process.
The selection criteria include the extent of poverty in the region and
disease burden, the knowledge and skill of the healthcare providers,
and the quality of the services provided. Priority is given to facilities
focusing on HIV/AIDS and providing educational and preventive care
to mothers and children.
4. How We Help: Direct Relief provides medicines, nutritional
supplements, medical supplies, and equipment to approved partners.
By encouraging healthcare companies to donate appropriate products
and purchasing essentials, Direct Relief furnishes items specifically
requested by facilities' medical staff. In the first nine months of 2005,
Direct Relief has provided aid to over 22.3 million people through 445
shipments. Direct Relief professional staff includes a Chief Medical
Officer, a Pharmacist, and a biomedical team who review requests
from partners to ensure that all medical donations are appropriate for
the level and type of healthcare services being provided.
5. Why it Matters: Health has intrinsic value for every person, but
it is also essential for people to learn, work, and make a living. In
developing countries, financing health services is extremely difficult.
Where patients and governments lack funds and no private health
insurance exists, not enough money is available to procure basic
medical supplies and maintain an adequately staffed health facility.
The trained health professionals in poor countries represent the most
important part of the healthcare infrastructure. Direct Relief’s support
enables them to stay productively engaged and their patients to
receive needed care.
6. Shared Investment and Self-Help: To ensure a shared stake in
the assistance provided, each in-country partner is asked to assume
responsibility for a small portion of the transport costs, usually from
port-of-entry to in-country destination.
7. What We Do at Home: Our local and statewide programs include
supplying medicines and supplies to free and community clinics;
providing dental education, services, and dental kits to homeless
and low-income children and families; screening agricultural workers
for communicable diseases; and tackling disaster preparedness on
several levels.
8. Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance: The same
programmatic standards apply whether providing ongoing assistance
or disaster relief – we must know specifically what is required, who
is responsible, how the material will be used, and whether there is a
secure logistics channel. Following these principles, in 2005, Direct
Relief responded to nine small and large disasters around the globe.
9. Leading Companies Trust Us: Direct Relief works closely
with the philanthropic initiatives of dozens of healthcare companies,
including Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Pfizer, Abbott Laboratories, BD,
Bristol-Myers Squibb, GlaxoSmithKline, and MidMark Corporation. For a
complete list of our Medical Product Donors, see page 10.
10. Our Experience and Qualifications: Direct Relief’s
programmatic approach has been refined by 57 years of experience.
We are a licensed wholesale pharmacy, and our staff has vast
experience in international health and development. Visit our
Generosity Inspires
In a year marked by catastrophic events, Direct Relief’s warehouse became
the focal point of extraordinary compassion and generosity. The outpouring
of support by businesses, organizations, and ordinary citizens to help victims
survive and rebuild was humbling and inspirational. Hundreds of volunteers
were trained to prepare shipments, answer phones, process online donations,
open mail, and write thank you notes to the tens of thousands of generous
donors across the nation. Schools and churches started spontaneous fundraising
for the victims of these disasters while cities everywhere were pulling together to
brainstorm ideas to help the people in need.
A warehouse may seem an unlikely spot to witness the inspiring depth of genuine
compassion, but the many individual stories of our donors and volunteers have
captured our hearts and continue to inspire us. People gave large and small and
everyone gave what they could. These heartfelt stories are among thousands
of others. Direct Relief would like to share our sincere thanks to our volunteer
community for making it possible to meet the challenges of this year.
• A local boy donated all of his bar mitzvah money
• A beautiful heirloom pearl pendant arrived from an anonymous donor to be
auctioned
• Many children donated their allowance
• An anonymous donor sent $100,000
• A bus driver from the Midwest signed over her two-week paycheck
• $1 dollar was sent with a note “this is all I could give”
• Bars and restaurants from across the nation, held fundraiser after fundraiser to
raise money for the disaster victims
• Elementary schools, high schools, and colleges organized bake sales, coin and
dollar drives, car washes, jog-a-thons, and other fundraisers
• Neighbors collected together and held art sales, garage sales, and
photography exhibitions
• A group of mothers sat in the rain for hours collecting money at grocery stores
• Numerous corporate donors created Matching Gift Funds
• National retailers put donation boxes in their stores
• Benefit events like rock concerts, golf tournaments, and auctions were held
• Hurricane Relief All Day Drive was held by the Santa Barbara County First
Responders which included Firefighters, Police Officers, and Community Leaders
Generosity inspires. Compassion is fuel for our organization. Direct Relief is
committed to honoring these precious human qualities by ensuring the resources
entrusted to our organization serve in the most efficient and productive way the
people for whom the contributions are made.
Natural Disasters:
Quick Response with a View Towards Long-Term Recovery
2005 was defined in part by a series of extraordinary
natural disasters that affected large areas and millions
of people. As our global population expands, more
and more people are vulnerable to nature as she
runs her course.
SOUTH ASIA
On December 26, 2004, the most powerful
earthquake in 40 years struck off the coast of the
Indonesian island of Sumatra. The earthquake
triggered a series of deadly tsunamis that radiated
across the Indian Ocean leaving an unprecedented
path of death and destruction in 14 countries. Over
225,000 people are estimated to have been killed
and millions more lost their homes and livelihoods.
Direct Relief’s response – which is ongoing – has
included $35.5 million in direct aid. This has
included 150 tons of medical material aid valued at
$28.6 million (wholesale) and $7.1 million in cash
grants to partner healthcare facilities and non-profit
organizations in affected Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka,
Thailand, and Somalia.
These critically needed medicines, supplies, and
equipment were sufficient to provide full courses of
treatment to 3.8 million tsunami-affected individuals.
In addition to material assistance, Direct Relief’s
cash grants to resident in-country and U.S.-based
non-profit health facilities and organizations have
improved water and sanitation, repaired damaged
healthcare facilities, constructed dozens of new
clinics and community health centers, and provided
funds to purchase and operate mobile medical units
and conduct medical camps. Direct Relief has also
purchased over 200,000 insecticide-treated bed
Thomas Tighe meets staff at Acadiana Outreach Center during a
trip to the Hurricane Katrina disaster zone.
On August 29, 2005 with winds at more than 165
miles per hour, Hurricane Katrina swept through
Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama as the first
Category 5 hurricane of the season. The death toll
stands at 1,281 and the property damage estimated
to be the most extensive in U.S. history. Over one
million people were displaced creating a humanitarian
crisis on a scale unseen in the U.S. since the Great
Depression. One month later, Hurricane Rita struck
an already devastated Louisiana and Texas.
Direct Relief has provided $26 million (wholesale)
of emergency medical material aid weighing 72 tons
through 75 shipments to 64 facilities in the Gulf
region. Additionally, $1.6 million in emergency cash
grants were given to emergency health clinics and
facilities over the initial six weeks after the hurricanes
hit. Direct Relief is continuing to receive requests for
emergency assistance from frontline health facilities
and statewide health organizations in five states and
the response continues to be strong.
On October 7, 2005 Hurricane Stan caused severe
flooding and mudslides in the Central American
countries of Guatemala, El Salvador, and southern
Mexico and has led to at least 1,153 deaths, with
many more reported missing and feared dead. The
final death toll will likely never be known. A large
portion of that figure comes from one village alone, as
a mudslide completely destroyed the village of Panabaj
in Guatemala’s Sololá department.
Direct Relief responded by delivering over three tons
of emergency medicines and supplies worth more than
$1 million (wholesale) to two long-standing partners
in El Salvador and Guatemala. The emergency
materials include antibiotics, anti-fungal creams,
eye drops, first aid and minor surgical supplies, oral
rehydration drinks, and personal care items such as
shampoo, soap, and toothbrushes.
An estimated 130,000 people were killed by the tsunami in Indonesia alone. International Relief and
Development, IRD, a U.S.-based NGO with prior experience in Indonesia, has agreed to help with logistics
and distribution of Direct Relief-provided medical material to local partners. One such partner, the Center
for Humanitarian and Social Empowerment, CHSE, operates twice-weekly village medical camps throughout
Aceh, one of Indonesia’s most devastated regions. Abbott provided Direct Relief with a generous donation
of erythromycin, a powerful broad spectrum antibiotic suitable to treat a variety of common infections.
PAKISTAN
Alcon Laboratories and
Bayou Clinic Inc., USA
The only physician in the area, Dr. Regina
Benjamin operated out of an empty
donated FEMA trailer set up behind
her clinic after it was flooded in order
to continue to provide much needed
services to her community. Thanks
to generous donations of ophthalmic
medication from Alcon Laboratories, such
as potent antibiotic eyedrops, Direct
Relief donations completely equipped
three medical examination rooms within
her once empty trailer.
On October 8, 2005 more than 80,000 people were
killed by a powerful earthquake centered below the
Hindu Kush mountain range in Pakistan, sending
shockwaves across south Asia and reducing cities and
villages to rubble. The majority of the deaths from the
quake, which measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, were
in Pakistan. The UN estimates that more than three
million people are in need of shelter.
Children in Balakot, Pakistan, a city devastated by the
earthquake
In the initial weeks following the quake, Direct Relief
committed $250,000 in cash to assist victims and
over $5.7 million of antibiotics, antifungal creams,
casting material, personal care items, stethoscopes,
and surgical equipment to support emergency health
services. At press time, Direct Relief Operations
Manager, Brett Williams, was in Pakistan working
directly with partners and helping arrange logistics for
airlifts and medevacs in Kashmir.
Based on long experience, Direct Relief’s emergency
response efforts are fast, but they also are conducted
so as to strengthen the existing health infrastructure
in the affected areas. In any community, the existing
health professionals and facilities are essential in
both the immediate relief phase and thereafter. Relief
efforts often generate and can consume enormous
resources, and we believe substantial long-term benefit
can result from this infusion of resources if targeted
to those who will continue to provide health services
after the immediate crisis subsides.
Improving Global Health
Local Solutions… Worldwide
Poverty and poor health have a stranglehold on each other. Children who are sick
can’t learn, and adults who are sick can’t work and support their families. People in
poor countries face staggering health challenges that begin even before a child is born.
Pregnant women often have inadequate nutrition and limited access to prenatal care.
The birthing process, usually unattended by a medical professional or midwife, entails
significant risks to both mother and baby. These risks expand throughout childhood.
The combination of limited resources and high health risks claim millions of lives
each year. Compounding the human tragedy is the social and economic tragedy of
lost human capacity needed to promote economic growth and development.
While the devastation caused by natural disasters continues to capture headlines,
the principal cause of human suffering and death are diseases that are preventable,
treatable, and largely absent in developed countries.
For 57 years, Direct Relief has served the health needs of underserved people – the
forgotten poor who have little to no access to primary healthcare services. The
challenges of financing health services for a country are significant, even in a rich
country such as the United States. In poor countries, financing health services has
become an insurmountable challenge in recent years.
In countries with limited health infrastructure and personnel, we aim to support the
critical frontline health facilities and workers with essential tools they need to care for
patients. These partners, a few of whom are highlighted below, are integral to Direct
Relief’s assistance efforts.
SRI LANKA
After the Asian tsunami last December, Direct Relief joined with Sarvodaya,
Sri Lanka’s largest and most broadly embedded people’s organization, to help
with recovery efforts. Dedicated to holistic development for more than 50 years,
Sarvodaya has built a network that involves 15,000 villages, more than 100,000
youth mobilized for peace building, and the country’s largest micro-credit operation
with a cumulative loan portfolio of more than one billion Sri Lankan rupees.
Sarvodaya is led by Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne, a physician and public health expert, who
understood the complexities of managing the health, economic, and social recovery
efforts in the tsunami’s aftermath.
After initially providing medical supplies to the dozens of relief camps managed
by Sarvodaya, Direct Relief continues to work with Sarvodaya. Using tsunamidesignated
contributions, Direct Relief has financed Sarvodaya’s establishment of
30 community-based healthcare centers, one mobile medical unit to cover rural
areas, and the salaries of two regional health coordinators. As in all tsunamiaffected
countries, significant aid flows occurred at the national government level
in Sri Lanka. But the infusion of resources into Sarvodaya’s excellent grassroots
organization ensures that basic services and attention can be furnished by highly
motivated, deeply committed members of affected communities.
In addition to working with the Ministry of Health, which oversees Sri Lanka’s
excellent public health system, and directly with two public hospitals in hard-
to the significant resources made available for tsunami efforts, so Direct Relief’s
support enables them to fill the significant gaps that exist between governmental
and other international organization’s large-scale reconstruction projects.
GLAXOSMITHKLINE AND AMRITA INSTITUTE, INDIA
The Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Center, in Kerala State,
is a non-profit medical center. In the aftermath of the tsunami, Amrita deployed
teams of medical personnel in ambulances, which served as mobile surgical
units. Amrita took responsibility for the medical needs of 50,000 people
affected by this devastating natural disaster. Direct Relief sent medical
equipment and other supplies to assist in this organization’s heroic relief
efforts, including GlaxoSmithKline’s Augmentin, a medication crucial to the
fight against respiratory infections.
ALLERGAN AND ST. JOHN EYE HOSPITAL,
WEST BANK/GAZA
Located in East Jerusalem, St. John Eye Hospital performs more than 4,000
surgical procedures and over 40,000 outpatient consultations a year, both at
its main facility and in mobile operations throughout West Bank villages and
refugee camps. Allergan provided Direct Relief with glaucoma medication and
other eye care products, items which are traditionally unavailable in the area.
Direct Relief shipments support these operations and ensure the continued
service of this dedicated health provider.
SCHERING-PLOUGH AND MAMFE GENERAL HOSPITAL, CAMEROON
100 miles and a 12-hour drive away from the next nearest medical facility,
Mamfe General Hospital cares for tens of thousands of people living in
its region. Relying on only one simple box of supplies a month from its
impoverished government, this hospital sought out Direct Relief’s assistance.
Direct Relief International is proud to serve such a facility, which subsists
more on the personal strength of its staff than any other aid. Schering-Plough
supported our effort by providing requested allergy medication, a product
nearly impossible to find in Cameroon.

EL SALVADOR
The Salvadorian Foundation (FUSAL) and Direct Relief have
collaborated on many occasions over the course of 12 years
in our mutual efforts to serve the indigent population in El
Salvador. Through a series of both urban and rural clinics,
FUSAL’s warehouse, located in the capital city of San Salvador,
distributes critically needed medicines and medical supplies to
thousands of poor families. As a major exporter of coffee, El
Salvador’s economy has been particularly hard-hit due to recent
natural disasters and weak world coffee prices. These unfavorable
conditions have resulted in high levels of unemployment, a lack of
trained medical personnel, and a decreased availability of medical
supplies and medicines, especially within the low-income sector.
FUSAL’s extensive network of health facilities throughout El
Salvador and its strong working relationship with the Ministry
of Health offers a ground-level view of health conditions in the
country and a fast, clear channel through which Direct Reliefprovided
medical resources can be carefully directed.
In response to the recent Hurricane Stan, which followed Rita
through the Gulf and hit Central America hard, Direct Relief
provided an immediate emergency air shipment of $500,000
of assorted clinic and hospital supplies that were requested. These
materials included antibiotics, analgesics, disinfectants, dermatological
creams, first aid and surgical supplies, and shelter materials.
ZAMBIA
Zambia’s economic situation is stagnant, and the government is burdened with high
debt and a rural health infrastructure that remains severely under-funded. More
than 50 percent of the population are children under the age of 15, and a further
20 to 25 percent are women of childbearing age. The World Health Organization
reports that the life expectancy at birth in Zambia is just 35 years, and the underfive
child mortality rate is approximately 180 per 1,000. The main health concerns
are malaria (with subsequent anemia), respiratory tract infections, malnutrition,
tuberculosis, neonatal septicemia, and HIV/AIDS. The impact of inadequate
healthcare facilities is compounded by poverty, disease, and malnutrition. The
effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic have been devastating, with an estimated 16.5%
percent of adult Zambians infected and over one million AIDS orphans.
Local children greet visitors at the Kashikishi Hospital, Luapala Province, Zambia
Mansa General Hospital is a 470-bed facility and the provincial hospital for the
Luapula Province. This hospital is the cornerstone of a wide-reaching referral
system that involves smaller hospitals and rural health centers, some over 200
km away. In addition to serving the needs of the people of northwestern Zambia,
Mansa General also serves numerous refugees from nearby Democratic Republic of
the Congo which has recently been ravaged by civil war.
Mansa General has four doctors on staff responsible for about one million people,
including one pediatrician, Dr. Jerome Sulubani. Dr. Sulubani is one of only
two pediatricians in all of Zambia outside of the capital Lusaka. He is also the
photo: Frank Bott
past President of the Rotary Club of Mansa. The Mansa Rotarians have assisted
Direct Relief in assuring the safe arrival and proper distribution of medicines and
equipment for partner hospitals and clinics in the region for the last 15 years. This
year, Direct Relief provided multiple pieces of critical diagnostic equipment along
with medicines and supplies to Mansa General that will significantly enhance health
services there. By giving dedicated local health workers proper tools to do their
jobs, Direct Relief is making a major impact on the health of the people living in
this region.
MIDMARK AND SUDDIE HOSPITAL, GUYANA
This 98-bed hospital provides care to more than 3,400 inpatients and 18,000
outpatients annually, as well as sending its staff in boats along the Essequibo
River to provide outreach services to smaller under-served communities.
Donations like Midmark’s gift of a tabletop autoclave sterilizer help supply
these amazingly hardworking and selfless clinic workers.
JOHNSON & JOHNSON AND NURSING HOME CONSORTIUM, ESTONIA
Gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Estonia has made great
political and economic strides. However, long-term care facilities have been
forced to cope with little government funding and a burgeoning nursing home
and orphanage population. As government assistance continues to decrease,
Direct Relief has provided much sought after antibiotics, such as Johnson &
Johnson’s and Daiichi’s life-saving Levaquin, used to treat pneumonia, to help
improve the health of the facility residents.
