Here are a few helpful 

inkjet terms to know. 

GSM ~ Grams per square meter. 

A measure of weight. 

mil ~ Measure of thickness in 

thousands of an inch or caliper. 

Baryta ~ Barium Sulfate used for 

archival permanence, as a natural 

optical brightener and traditional 

darkroom paper look and feel. 

Optical Brighteners ~ Additives 

that paper manufacturers will 

include in their papers to make 

them look whiter and brighter. 

Pigment Ink ~ Tiny pigment 

particles suspended in solution. 

Dye Ink ~ Dye dissolved in water 

to make a homogenized liquid. 

Resin Coated (RC) ~ Alpha 

Cellulose based paper, encased in 

plastic usually with micro-porous 

inkjet receptive emulsion. 

Alpha Cellulose Base ~ High 

Grade Wood Pulp. Usually less 

expensive and has a sturdier feel 

than 100% Cotton Rag.
