A Witness to History
The century old story of Pera Palace Hotel starts at the end of the 18 th century...
When at the beginning of the 19 th century transportation facilities developed,
the magical identity of İstanbul was discovered by more and more people.
Travellers throughout the world came to this imperial city for the works of Sinan,
the Judas trees along the slopes of the Bosphorus and to rave the narrow streets
where 40 languages were spoken. Then, only modest pensions were available.
That was when Orient Express chose İstanbul as its last stop. That time owning
company of the Orient Express, La Compagnie Internationale des Wagon-Lits
et des Grands Express Européens needed a “palace hotel” that would meet the
high standards of its upscale clientele. This need was fulfilled by the opening of
Pera Palace Hotel.
Pera Palace Hotel, that has been
a significant symbol of the urban
culture of İstanbul for over a
hundred years, was also the proud
and silent witness of many historical
events such as World War I,
occupation of İstanbul, Turkish War
of Independence, founding of the
Turkish Republic and World War
II. After an extensive restoration
process, Pera Palace Hotel re-opened
its doors in September, 2010.
2
The hotel was designed by Alexander Vallaury, an İstanbul resident Levantine
architect, also called “the city architect of İstanbul” as he has also designed
other monumental buildings. Pera Palace Hotel, designed in a blend of Art
Nouveau, Oriental and Neoclassic styles opened its doors with a grand opening
ball held in 1895 and shortly listed among the outstanding buildings of
İstanbul. The hotel was home to many firsts; it was the first and only building
powered by electricity other than Ottoman Palaces. The first elevator and
hot running water were also in Pera Palace Hotel.
Since 1895, Pera Palace Hotel
hosted many iconic names
such as the founder of
modern day Turkey,
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk,
Ernest Hemingway,
Agatha Christie,
Jacqueline Kennedy, Greta
Garbo, Alfred Hitchcock,
Zsa Zsa Gabor, King Edward
VIII, Mata Hari, Sarah
Bernhardt, Yehudi Menuhin
and many more.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk
Greta Garbo
Agatha Christie
Ernest Hemingway
Elevator
British writer Daniel Farson described the first elevator in İstanbul in these
words; “It is the most beautiful elevator in the world made of cast iron and wood. This
elevator ascends like a lady who curtsies. Tourists can not take their eyes off this utterly
pretty and aristocrat elevator.”
