Trevor’s vision for hockey
HAD the pleasure last
I month of spending a
couple of hours in the
company of Redcliffe
Leagues Hockey Club
president Trevor Barsby.
Trevor, who besides having
a strong link to hockey also
played more than 100 matches
for the Queensland Bulls
cricket team, is passionate
about sport.
I have known Trevor for a
long time and enjoyed hearing
about his plans and visions for
hockey, which is by and large
an amateur sport.
It is great to see someone of
his ilk contribute to sport on
the Peninsula and be prepared
to meet its challenges head
on. Like all sports, hockey is
competing for people’s time
and trying to lure youngsters
along to try it out.
I was fortunate to watch the
Redcliffe men’s A grade play
a match on the club’s artificial
turf at Mary Nairn Fields
alongside Oxley Avenue.
Hockey requires great skill
and courage and it was
fascinating to see the different
body shapes to what I am
used to on a rugby league
field.
The Redcliffe Leagues
Club has been a sponsor of
hockey on the Peninsula for at
least two decades and we are
proud of the association
between the two sports.
I last watched a game in
1976 and the introduction of
new surfaces certainly has
enabled the sport to evolve,

EASTER long weekend
trade was extremely
pleasing around the club.
Considering the beautiful
weather for all four days,
patrons could be excused for
soaking up the wonderful
sunshine and hanging around
the shoreline.
I think it may have been a
mixture of both. Redcliffe is
such a beautiful diverse place
that there is something to do
for every part of the day
whether it’s indoors or out.
Our staff is really focusing
on the customer experience
during trade. As chairman
Bob Jones has mentioned in
the past Dolphins News
issues, we have put in place a
five-year plan and with many
varying parts that make up our
vision.
Among many others is
providing an exceptional
customer experience and we
ask our staff to treat our
customers the way they would
like to be treated on their day
although Redcliffe still boasts
a couple of grass fields.
Best of luck to Trevor and
his crew. He was an
outstanding cricketer and an
even better bloke.

BACK to rugby league, a
sport I am a touch more
familiar with.
I would like to focus on
Simon Malcolm, a young
forward with our Colts.
Malcolm has inspired me
over the past couple of years
with his dedication and
perseverance to the sport.
He would be the first to
admit he is not the most
athletic of players, however
through hard work and
mental toughness he has
worked his way into our
Mal Meninga Cup squad
and now our top Colts
combination.
Malcom continues to
off during their valued leisure
time.
The club has numerous
feedback forms scattered
throughout the club and we
ask you to fill one in as it is an
invaluable source of
marketing intelligence.
Whether it’s positive or
negative, we appreciate the
customer feedback.
Pilates and yoga have their
own home on the first floor of
Dolphins Health Precinct.
Unofficially we will be
operating classes this month,
amaze me at training and on
the training paddock as he
doesn’t whinge at the
workload and just grins and
bears it.
As someone who has
struggled with his weight,
before Christmas Malcolm
consulted a dietician and
has changed his eating
habits.
The result has been a
slimmer version and a
couple of strong showings in
his Colts outings.
Malcolm’s dedication is a
good lesson to us all and
especially the more
athletically gifted who think
they don’t have to put in as
hard work as they should.

FORMER Dolphin and
Queensland State of Origin
forward Michael Crocker
dropped into the Leagues
Club last month.
Mick was there as a
representative of the Rugby
League Players Association,
for which he works after
retiring from an illustrious
NRL career with the Roosters,
Storm and South Sydney.
As a Dolphins product who
went on to play for Australia,
he was delighted with his
mural in the club’s Legends
Bar.
It’s great to see Mick still
involved in the greatest game
of all.

learn of the passing of one of
the “originals”, 1960 first
but we have the grand opening
of the Balance Pilates Mind
and Body Studio in very early
June.
This gives us more valuable

Dolphins Group CEO
grader John Karey, who
passed away in his Murgon
home last month.
John was a passionate
Redcliffe man who spoke
fondly of his playing days on
the Peninsula after he and
his mates from Caboolture
joined Redcliffe’s push into
the BRL in those early
years.
John spoke proudly of the
50-year anniversary put on
in 2010 by the football club
at Dolphin Oval where he
and his mates from that
inaugural 1960 BRL team
were treated to a day
watching the first grade
team play.
John is survived by his
wife Daphne, his children
Leeah and Scott and their
families and they have the
sympathy of all at the club.

Davis sparked a solid win

Robert racks up $5200 win
LUCKY member Robert Lane could
not have asked for a better farewell
present than to win the latest Birthday
Card Draw.
Two weeks after taking out the March 27
draw, Robert and his wife Beverley were on a
17-day cruise to Hawaii from Sydney.
A club member for the past 20 years, Robert,
membership number 6626, said his draw win
took a little while to sink in. The first name
drawn out, Gloria Blanch, 55451, was not
present.
“We go to the draws every time,” Robert
said. “We will be there in July for Beverley’s
birthday. The vouchers we receive with this
win are magic. We have used some of them
already.”
The Lanes, of Kippa-Ring, said they tried to
get down to the club as often as they could.
“We are retired so there is so much to do,”
he said. “We like to go for a meal and also like
to spend a couple of dollars in the donation
area.
When the first lady in the draw wasn’t there,
I thought I was still in with a chance. And when
they said Robert and what a nice name that
was, I thought maybe. And then my surname
and I was over the moon.”
One lucky member claims the major prize
on the last Thursday of the month. Somewhere
between 5.30pm and 7.30pm, the club draws
one lucky member from our birthday barrel to
take home $5200 in prize vouchers.
As with every Birthday Card draw we hold,
you have to be here to claim your prize. If you
aren’t here when your name is called, we
simply pull another name out of the barrel and
give the prize to them.
This month’s Birthday Card draw is on
Thursday, May 29.

THE weekly members draw has continued
its upward trend once again.
After going off at $9400 to 93-year-old
George Bullerwell on February 5, the
jackpot started at a boosted $6000.
The draw sees three membership
numbers chosen each Wednesday between
6pm and 8pm using a random number
selector.
If not won that evening, the jackpot goes
up by $100 each Wednesday until it is won.

Cup squads try hard to qualify
THE Village Motors Redcliffe Dolphins Cyril Connell Cup and Mal
Meninga Cup competitions have come to their conclusion.
Coaches of the 2014 squads were
Wayne Weekes (Cyril Connell) and Tony
Vidler (Mal Meninga).
Wayne had a tough job selecting the
under 16 squad. The initial training group
included a variety of local Redcliffe juniors
and players from the Dolphins’ affiliates
clubs. Mitchell Stokes from the Burpengary
Jets has been very impressive as has
Lachlan Murray from the Narangba
Rangers.
The Cyril Connell Cup squad had a
tough initiation into their competition.
After very good trial form with wins over
Easts and Wynnum-Manly, the team wasn’t
able to record a win heading into their
final clash against Wynnum-Manly at
Kougari Oval.
The under 16s finished off their season
with a hard-fought draw against the
Seagulls.
As the competition progressed, there
were promising signs for the under 16
group, who will be much better for the
exposure into the next level of their
rugby league. Wayne and his staff have
done a great job this season.
Tony Vidler had his first stint as head
coach of the program after two previous
seasons as assistant and had the task of
defending the Mal Meninga Cup state title.
The bulk of last year’s squad backed up
for their second season and things were
looked promising for thee under 18s.
New players to join the squad and impress
were Mitchell McPaul, Reece Vincent and
Brandon O’Regan.
Brandon is a noted speedster and
scored two sets of hat-tricks through the
competition and will push for a senior
position here in the not so distant future.
The Mal Meninga side has done things
the tough way, consistency being the
major factor in their run to the finals.

Beating top four sides in Norths and
Gold Coast Green, then losing to the less
fancied Ipswich and a very tough loss to
Gold Coast White at Tweed Heads had
them teetering on the finals edge going
into the last round versus Wynnum.
The scenario for the team was win and
you are in. Wynnum showed plenty of
form in their final weeks, racking up over
100 points in attack.
The impressive record wasn’t enough
in the do-or-die final fixture however and
went down to the line for a two-point
loss of 18-16. The staff of the under 18
squad have put together a terrific program
for this season and the players have
benefited largely and improved from it.
The sole focus of these programs is
skill development for progression to
senior football. Players from both squads
should be commended on their discipline
and application to their football through
these competitions. The future of the
Dolphins is burning bright with the
current group of juniors coming through.
DOLPHIN Oval has been named the
2014 host of the QAIHC Arthur
Beetson Foundation Murri Rugby
League Carnival.
The announcement was made last
month by Arthur Beetson’s son at a
press conference at Dolphin Oval
with carnival stakeholders and
sponsors.
The decision to move the 2012-13
Ipswich-based carnival to Redcliffe
has the support of carnival naming
rights sponsors Arthur Beetson
Foundation and Queensland
Aboriginal and Islander Health
Council.
Attending the media release for
the announcement were QRL
chairman Peter Betros, local MP Reg
Gulley, MBRC Mayor Allan Sutherland
and other indigenous organisation
representatives including Deadly
Choices and the Institute for Urban
Indigenous Health.
Dolphins president Bob Jones said
he and the board were over the moon
to host the carnival and is looking
forward to working with the Arthur
Beetson Foundation and QAIHC
leading up to the event.
“The recent redevelopment of
junior fields and the ability to play
several games at once provided the
perfect location for a carnival with
the size and calibre of the Murri
Rugby League Carnival,” he said.
“We host our second Close The
Gap home game on May 18 and have
had the pleasure of working with the
Murri Carnival sponsors at these days
the last two seasons.
“Extending that relationship to
promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander health on such a large scale
with Lizzie Adams (QAIHC
chairwoman) is a challenge we’re
excited about.”
Players from participating teams in
under 15s, women and senior grades
will diverge on Dolphin Oval from
September 25-28.

New road laws just around the bend
WITH the Port Macquarie Iron
Man race quickly approaching,
our fearless leader and race
competitor Dan Hutchinson is in
the tail stretch of his gruelling
training regime.
Part of this training involves weekly
bike rides of as far as 200km in length, all
on the open roads of south-east
Queensland.
It has therefore been with considerable
interest over the past few months that
the Cooke and Hutchinson team has
been observing the new developments
on Queensland’s cycling laws.
Recent years have seen a marked spike
in the amount of people taking up cycling
in the wider Brisbane area.
While this is obviously good from a
community health perspective, there had
been an alarming increase of incidents
involving cyclists and motorists.
One of the worst of these was the
tragic death of young Brisbane cyclist
Richard Pollett in June of 2011, which led
to Queensland MP Bruce Flegg calling for
an examination into cycling conditions on
Queensland roads.
From April 7, we will see the fruits of
that examination, with the introduction
of a two-year-trial whereby motorists
will have to give at least a metre of space
to cyclists in 60km/h or less zones and
1.5 metres in faster zones.
Penalties for non compliance have yet
to be determined, however, fines for
cyclists who break the road rules will
now also be brought into line with those
faced by motorists.
“These changes have been a long time
coming,” Mr Hutchinson said. “I have
seen, and sometimes been the subject of,
a number of instances of unacceptably

upcoming changes, I have certainly
noticed a marked difference from passing
motorists, the majority of whom have
started to give our group a bit more
space on the road,” Mr Hutchinson said.
“There will always be the odd one or
two who will look to cause trouble and,
overall, I think we still have a long way to
go.
“However, it has been really heartening
to see the response from the wider
community. With any luck a few of them
might be encouraged to come down and
join us.”

points here and I thought we played quite
well. I could sense we were ready to play. I
was happy with how we handled ourselves in
defence and how the pack went. Tom
Geraghty had his best game for us yet and the
halves combined well. Tweed are a big side
and quite mobile and try to charge through
to, but we handled that tactic well. The surface
was quite good despite the weather around
and it was not too boggy, although it made
conditions a bit slippery for ball handling.

Depth at Dolphins
keeps sides afloat
THE strength of any club can be
judged by the depth in its playing
depths.
We have been fortunate at the Dolphins
that over the years we have always boasted
formidable reserve grade and Colts
combinations.
This season appears no different with
both our FOGS A grade and Colts
undefeated on top of their respective
ladders.
Just before the Sunshine Coast clash,
the Colts were two wins clear of their
closest rival while the reggies have only
had four fixtures.
Grant Flugge’s men were a little bit
fortunate against Souths Logan after
conceding a large lead to the visitors.
It is a measure of composure that they
were able to come back from 10 points
down with eight minutes left to snatch
victory with a Ben Cook kick from the
sideline for a 28-26 win.
This side has a never-say-die attitude
and that is hard to instil in any team.
Most oppositions can compete with
our Colts for a while, but then they grind
them down and in the backend of matches
are powering home.
Although they have some new faces, the
majority has played together either in
Colts or in the Mal Meninga Cup and
know each other’s game well.

WE might just be able to form a
front-rowers union at the Dolphins.
Former outstanding Redcliffe
captain Chris Farrell has returned to
the club as assistant coach with our
Colts.
Chris was an outstanding example
both on and off the field in his time
at Dolphin Oval and will help out
Colts coach Brendan Lam.
Premiership prop Adam Starr has
been assistant coach with the FOGS
Cup for a couple of years and I
suppose I spent enough time in the
engine room to qualify as a frontrower.
Brendan had approached me to
find someone to help out in the
forwards as he and Mick Roberts
primarily looked after the backs.
Chris’ experience speaks for itself
and his love of the game is such that,
although busy at work, he is
surrendering some of his time for
our club’s youngest players.
His guidance will be invaluable to a
side that already is showing the
spark to grab a premiership.
Speaking of props, another familiar
face back in the red and white is
James Crombie.
The “Big Rig”, who recently spent
time with the Capras, has already
turned out for Grant Flugge’s FOGS
A grade and his power and
experience could come in handy in
the coming rounds.

about in the future is winger Tom Opacic.
I coached this outstanding back in our
Colts in 2012 and he was exceptional,
racking up 17 tries in 16 games.
He has moved on to the Broncos,

trains hard and plays hard and is reaping

we let go. You have got to win those sorts of
games, especially after we had a good lead.
The reality is that we didnít play well enough.
We scored early and then again and though
we had the match won. We got a little
complacent and didnít keep doing the hard
work. It was a good lesson that anyone can
beat anyone on their day. The suspension to
half Adrian Davis hurt us. I knew it would but
I thought that we could cover that pretty well
but it didnít work out that way. We were
expecting Cameron Cullen to play on the
weekend but a scan showed that he has a
fracture in his ankle and he is out for a
month.”

Coach’s comments: “The Cutters forwards
dominated the ruck making easy metres up
centre of the field, continually making us defend
off the back foot. They were on a roll in the first
half and we couldn’t really stop them. Despite
being down 14-0 at the break, I thought we
could get back into the game. I thought if we
had our share of the ball, played an up-tempo
game and lifted our defence, we would be a

can take some positives out of the match. Our

“The Dolphins are
everything I anticipated,”
the 24-year-old said. “It’s
been amazing so far and
there has been no letdown
in any way.
“It has been a real
honour to wear the red
and white knowing the
quality of the player in the
past who has turned out
for Redcliffe.
“I am just trying to do
the jersey proud. I know
there’s lots of frontrowers
at the club and I
have to perform to my
best every week to keep
my spot.
“That was my major
motivation in joining
Redcliffe … knowing that I
had to perform week in,
week out.”
Cordwell was named
18th man for the match
against Northern Pride in
Cairns before making his
appearance in the victory
over Easts Tigers.

level you have to put in
and I’m feeling the fittest I
have in my career.”
The 109kg Cordwell
said he had been privileged
to play against Petero
Civoniceva three times
last season in his farewell

“I played against him in
a trial and then in the
home and away fixtures,”

I had read his biography
and hoped to learn how
to tackle him. He is a solid
man and it will take a
whole team of props to

Cordwell signed from
the Sunshine Coast
Falcons after spending the
past three seasons with
the Kawana-based outfit,
which is currently on a
25-game losing streak, and
before that a season with
Souths Logan Colts, where
he made his Queensland
Cup debut.
Despite a tough 2013
season, he managed to
score the club’s Player of
the Year award.
He said lack of depth
and the absence of an
NRL connection hampers
the Falcons.
“We were capable of
good patches of football
but if someone was hurt
we had to blood new
players in,” he said. “You
have the situation at
Redcliffe where the
reserve grade is up to
Queensland Cup standard.
“With that depth you
are pushed every week
because you know that if
you don’t perform
someone else will. It gets
the best out of me.”
What is little known is
that the Dolphins tried to
sign him when he was a
youngster, inviting him to
the club’s country trial
when Redcliffe were
aligned with the Sydney
Roosters.

and in 2011 I just couldn’t
understand why the
game was so big in places
like Fiji and Papua New
Guinea, yet we had
another Melanesian
country on our doorstep
and were undefeated for a
long time.
“A lot of good players got
their start with the unis and

As for his future, Cordwell
has made it clear after buying
a five-year membership of the
Redcliffe Leagues Club. He’s
not going anywhere.

Special event for the Hills
DOLPHINS identity Dawn Hill has celebrated her 59th wedding anniversary with
husband Fred.
Dawn, a life member of the Redcliffe
RLFC, married Fred on April 9, 1955 in the
Darling Downs town of Dalby.
“I lived in Dalby and Fred had come up
from New South Wales with some mates
looking for work,” Dawn said.
“We met on a blind date and that was it.”
The couple came to Redcliffe in 1969 and
Dawn has been a volunteer for the Dolphins
ever since. A former Redcliffe Leagues Club
board member, Dawn was also honored by the
Dolphins for her long-standing fundraising
efforts and is president of the Red and White
Supporters Club who travel throughout the
state barracking for the Dolphins.
“Fred has Alzheimer’s disease and is in a
nursing home at Rothwell,” Dawn said.
“For our anniversary, I was able to bring him
out for only the second time in two years.
“We went to the Leagues Club for lunch,
which the club shouted, but nothing really
focused for Fred.”
The Hills have two daughters, seven
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

How much should
your workout hurt?
PAIN can indicate progress, or
problems. Here’s how you
gauge discomfort.
Differentiating between the usual “I
just worked out really hard” pains and the
more worrisome, “I think I might’ve hurt
myself” ones can be difficult, especially
when you’re trying to push yourself
towards progress.
There’s a pain of injury and a pain of
adaptation — one is bad and the other is
good. To know the difference, read on.
The Good Kind
Comeback aches
You might be doing an activity perfectly,
but if you haven’t done highintensity
cardio in a while, it is normal
for your body to ache a bit during and
after your session.
Immediate aftershock
When you perform an activity painfree,
and then feel really sore afterwards,
in the muscles you were training, that’s a
good sign. Some discomfort after properly
executed exercise means that your
body is adapting to become more fit.
(Perfectly normal) soreness
Your soreness could last anywhere
from two to four days post-workout.
Rather than stopping all movement and
letting the pain take over during that
time, it is recommended that you should
work through it and keep your muscles
moving.
The Bad Kind
Biomechanical error
If you don’t have any pain prior to
your activity, and then you experience
pain while you’re performing a particular
movement, you should stop and take a
step back and have a trainer evaluate
your form and technique.
Interconnected injuries
Any chronic, pre-existing pain in your
back, hips or knees might rear its ugly
head in other parts of your body. For
example, an ankle issue will probably
create knee issues.
It’s important to make those connections
so that you can avoid misdiagnosis
and focus your treatment appropriately.
Your personal trainer and physiotherapist
can work together in providing your
recovery and fitness goals.
Localised pain
If you’re experiencing localised pain
during or after strength training, it’s a red
flag for you to stop and seek assistance.
Acute, out-of-nowhere aches
Any sharp, stabbing, traumatic, and/or
sudden pains during any kind of workout
should be checked out immediately.
The overdoing-it variety
After your two-to-four day recovery
period, if the pain lingers into your next
attempted exercise session, you might be
overtraining or not recovering adequately
enough between workouts

LOWER back pain affects nearly all of
us at some time in our lives and the
causes can vary.
Unless due to injury, often the main
problem stems from low strength and
endurance in the abdominal and
lower back muscles, poor aerobic
fitness along with poor flexibility in
the lower back, hamstrings, hip
flexors and gluteals (buttocks), as
well as poor lifting techniques and
posture.
As you can see the causes can vary,
but the standard prescription to fix
lower back pain is to exercise, rather
than rest. Personal trainers working
alone or with a physiotherapist can
make a difference through an exercise
program for back pain.
The program could include
cardiovascular exercise, strength
work for both lower back and
abdominals and flexibility exercises
for the major muscles that affect the
lower back region.

Muscles need work
to maintain size
WE often refer to muscles as the
engines of the body.
Unfortunately, muscles lose size and
strength with age, resulting in physical
weakness and a variety of degenerative
problems.
This is all part of the natural ageing process,
but things can be done to help you increase and
maintain size and strength of muscles just by
following a regular short and effective strengthtraining
program.
When asked about strength training many
people respond that they don’t desire big
muscles.
If only they knew how hard it was to get
them. Rather than talking about too much
muscle, we should be more concerned about
having too little muscle.
Unless we exercise the muscles we have
properly, we stand to lose 2kg to 3kg of lean
muscle every decade of our adult life.
This progressive muscle loss is responsible
for two of life’s major problems and can be
related to a number of health-related

APRIL has now been and gone, a third of the
year has absolutely flown by.
I hope that all Old Boys, Dolphin supporters
and their families had a happy and safe Easter
break.
The game of football the Dolphins played
against the Easts Tigers was an absolute
cracker, and after taking care of Tweed,
drawing with the Capras, then dishing the
Souths Magpies up, Troy’s boys certainly
look like they have turned the corner.
Flugge’s reggies and the Colts are
continuing their great starts to the year and it
is all looking good for a great season in 2014.

The April social saw a group of 30 plus Old
Boys travel to Esk for a day at the races. With
great weather and even better good old
country hospitability, a great day was had by
all. The bus trip back to the club was relatively
quiet. Obviously the majority of us returned
with our wallets somewhat lighter, as there is
usually much boasting and celebrated stories
of certain individuals and their punting

races as a viewing spectacle or was it that 10th

The May social on Saturday, May 24 will
see us venture back to the straight track
greyhound racing at Capalaba.
If you missed the first trip and want to take

If it is half as good as the March social it
will be a day to be remembered.
Fostering rugby league in all shapes and
sizes is what the Redcliffe Old Boys are all
about, so when the North Lakes Kangaroos
approached us at the start of the season

beginning of any year our funds are fairly

A special day for mum
MOTHER’S Day is one of those
special days on everyone’s
calendar.
And the Redcliffe Leagues Club is here to
take all the stress out of the day and put on a
luscious breakfast spread that every mum will
enjoy.
Plan to spend the morning in our very own
Bunny’s Family Restaurant and sit down with
the family to a sumptuous banquet of hot and
cold delights.
The buffet also includes a juice and coffee
station so there’s no need to leave early for that
coffee fix.
The most important thing about this
breakfast is that mum is treated to something
extra special – a beautiful rose on arrival – you
could even take credit for organizing this little
touch (we won’t mind).
Five hundred results
FOR more than 10 years the club’s Monday
night five hundred game has been held in a set
partners format.
Lately our playing numbers have been
falling slightly so management decided to trial
a moving partners game on April 28.
This means that you don’t have to come
along with a partner on that night. For example,
if we play 12 games, a contestant would play
with a different partner each game.
If the trial is successful, it could mean that
we could play more moving partner games or
even revert to this style permanently.
Obviously we are trying to improve playing
numbers and this could help us in that regard.
