City Centre
The development of City Centre over the next five years will
transform the downtown core to create British Columbia’s next great
metropolitan centre. It will become the commercial, residential,
entertainment, educational, civic and cultural heart of Surrey.
New Downtown Library
The new award-winning
downtown library opened in
September 2011 and is an iconic
architectural landmark in City
Centre. The LEED-certified,
75,000-square-foot facility is the
state-of-heart hub for Surrey’s
library services, and acts as
a unique gathering place for
residents. The library includes two
impressive public art features.
Covered Youth Park
A new covered outdoor youth
park opened in Summer 2011
adjacent to the new Chuck Bailey
Recreation Centre and provides
additional opportunities for
outdoor recreation programming,
particularly during wet weather.

Recreation Centre
The Chuck Bailey Recreation
Centre was initially built as a
Games Preparation Centre for the
2010 Winter Olympic Games. The
building has been adapted into
a 20,000 square foot recreation
centre featuring a gymnasium,
a youth lounge, preschool area
and multi-purpose space. The
building includes Canada’s largest
non-commercial urban screen
featuring changing displays of
digital artwork.

Seniors’ Space
A 3,500 square foot addition
was constructed at the Chuck
Bailey Recreation Centre
to accommodate seniors’
programming. The centre
includes multi-purpose space,
craft room, computer lab, lounge
and billiards room.
