SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR SUPPORTERS AND PARTNERS Summer Search would not be possible without our generous supporters, program partners and referral partners and their firm belief in our mission. There are so many we wish to thank. Here are just a few who made a big impact this year. Boston Recognizes Grand Circle Foundation for Giving Back Full Circle – Summer Search Boston thanks Grand Circle Foundation for generous support and numerous opportunities made available to Summer Search students, alumni, and staff. Grand Circle Foundation’s core values of open communication, teamwork, risk-taking, and thriving in change, all resound strongly with the values Summer Search works to instill in students. Thanks to Grand Circle’s support this year, four seniors were selected as Next Generation Leaders, an opportunity that includes paid summer internships, community service and cultural immersion in Tanzania, and college scholarships. Congratulations to winners Lyncy Ha ’07, Geraldine Medina ’07, Endrit Beja ’07, and Jason Lee ’07! In addition, Executive Director Emily Edwards, who has served as a member of Grand Circle Foundation’s Community Advisory Group, earned a funded opportunity to travel to Peru with fellow nonprofit leaders. Finally, this year’s Rites of Passage event at The Pinnacle Leadership Center was provided by a Grand Circle grant. The retreat provided an educational opportunity for over 20 graduating seniors to explore the transition to college with alumni, volunteers and staff. Summer Search Boston extends its deepest gratitude to Grand Circle Foundation for this partnership and creative collaboration, and for helping students, alumni, and staff to come “full circle” by giving back as leaders in their community, on their college campus, and beyond. Summer Search recent graduates Jason Lee ’07, Ibrahim Khonteh ’06, Ruthline Abraham ’07, and Christiana Samuel ’07 practice teamwork and leadership at Boston’s 2007 Rites of Passage Retreat Summer Search New York City Thanks Morgan Stanley for Funding Ten Morgan Stanley – Summer Search Scholars in 2007! – The scholars were selected based on academic performance, curiosity about business, and extraordinary resiliency in overcoming hardship. We congratulate 2007 high school graduates Johanna Arenillas, Karen Granados, Isaac Lliguin, Diana Marte, Solomon Odame, Joseph Reed, and four rising seniors for receiving this honor! Bay Area and Seattle Offices Thank the Stuart Foundation for Supporting Outreach Efforts – Since 2004, the Stuart Foundation has supported Summer Search Bay Area and Seattle sites, strengthening all of the Summer Search west coast programs. This year’s grant allowed these offices to focus outreach efforts on recruiting sophomores from the most underserved neighborhoods in desperate need of opportunities. Summer Search is honored to be one of the many inspiring programs supported by the Stuart Foundation and their community approach in promoting youth development. Silicon Valley Congratulates Referral Partner Jan Muscio ofWilliam C. Overfelt High School – Retiring English teacher Jan Muscio has been creating change in William C. Overfelt High School for over 30 years. She is known as a tireless worker who connects the administration and teachers with their students. Jan also grew up on the eastside of San Jose and has touched many lives during her career. One student she worked with is the current San Jose City Councilmember Nora Campos. When Councilmember Campos heard that Jan was retiring, she had her office present an official commendation from the city at the Silicon Valley Spring Event. It was a fitting moment of public recognition for someone who has been quietly creating change at her school, in her community, and with Summer Search. San Francisco Congratulates Referral Partner Ashanti Branch of San Lorenzo High – Math teacher and referral partner, Ashanti Branch, from San Lorenzo High School was recently awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach high school math in India. Not only has Ashanti introduced and nominated students from San Lorenzo, but he has also worked with Summer Search staff to develop workshops specifically aimed at helping young men articulate the struggles they face as they search for positive male role models. 4 Supporter/Partner Recognition
GIVING BACK Summer Search recognizes those who make a positive difference in their families, schools, communities in our nation and around the world! Here are a few who have stepped up to make a positive difference this year. North San Francisco Bay Junior Takes a Stand Against Global Warming – Guillermina, from El Molino High School, is an enthusiastic young woman who cares about her community and the environment. Her essay on how individuals can help stop Global Warming was recently published in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Here is an excerpt: ‘Simple Individual Actions Can Save the Planet’ by Guillermina The residents of the United States make up 5 percent of the world population, but use 26 percent of the world’s energy. At this point, global warming is a dilemma from which the world as a whole can save itself. The predicament can’t be solved entirely, but it can definitely be slowed down. But it’s understandable, in a world of 6.55 billion people, how can one person create change to impact everyone else? The truth is, one person can’t do it alone, it takes cooperation from everyone. Take a step outside and inhale that fresh air that can’t be experienced anywhere else in California. It’s disappointing to think that the earth is deteriorating and soon the children of the future will have no place to create one. Whether you are young, old, short or tall, everyone is in this together. Come together to create a place in which everyone will be able to breathe with ease. New York City’s Ladi Sasha Jones ’06 Rebuilds Community in New Orleans – Ladi Sasha Jones is perpetuating the ripple of change through her dedicated service: first, at an animal sanctuary with the World Horizons program in 2004; then, at an orphanage in Ghana through AFS in 2005; and today, by restoring the New Orleans community after Hurricane Katrina. On three trips to New Orleans during the past year, Ladi Sasha has helped rebuild damaged homes, raise awareness for resources available to the residents, and offer hope and happiness to the children living in the city. As a full-time volunteer at VISTA this summer, Ladi Sasha is teaching art to students in an after-school program and continuing to help rebuild more homes. We applaud her efforts and her spirit to revive a damaged community. Summer Search Seattle’s Alma Lopez ’07 Tutors Struggling Students – Alma Lopez, a recent graduate of Evergreen High, has a history of giving back to her community. As a high school sophomore, Alma worked with urban youth through University Settlement Camp in New York. Then, as a junior, Alma took center stage as a teacher in Honduras with Amigos de las Americas. During senior year she became a math tutor at her former middle school after working hard to overcome her past struggles in the subject. When asked about her experience, Alma replied, “What’s different about me is that I wanted to connect with the students on a different level. It wasn’t just about the academic stuff….I was interested in hearing about the students, how their day was, and if they had any problems.” This fall, Alma will be the first in her family to attend college when she starts at St. Martin’s University in Washington and is the recipient of the Bob Friend Scholarship. Motivated San Francisco Students Found the Ambassadors Group – Last fall, thirteen students from eight different schools joined forces to create the Ambassadors, a group dedicated to building student leadership and positive change within and beyond the Summer Search community. The Ambassadors pledge to do a monthly community service project, set the tone at all Summer Search events, and actively think of new and exciting ways for Summer Search students to serve as leaders. So much more than a group of outstanding leaders, the Ambassadors are the most uniting, connecting and embracing role models for new students! Giving Back 5
