The International Center of Photography (ICP) is the
world’s leading institution dedicated to the practice
and understanding of photography in all its forms.
Through our exhibitions, educational programs, and
community outreach, we offer an open forum for
dialogue about the role images play in our culture.
ICP was founded in 1974 by Cornell Capa (1918-
2008) as a tribute to his brother, legendary war
photographer Robert Capa. Since our founding,
we have presented more than 500 exhibitions and
offered thousands of classes, providing instruction
at every level. ICP is a center where photographers
can connect to create, understand, and experience
photography and where students, educators,
and researchers can take advantage of our
comprehensive resources and extensive collections.

Whether as a vehicle of self-expression, a documentation of the
world or a medium for aesthetic exploration, photography has
served the human desire for social, intellectual, and emotional
engagement with the world since its invention in the early 1800s.
For nearly 40 years, the International Center of Photography (ICP)
has established itself as the leading authority on the practice and
impact of photography in all its forms and has built a dedicated
community of image makers and those who understand and
appreciate the power of images.
Photography has changed tremendously, with the ubiquitous smart
phone camera, the explosion of photographic software applications
and consumer-generated content, and the many amazing
technological advancements in the photography field that allow
all of us to make pictures, distribute them online and reach tens of
millions of viewers.
The vision of Founding
Director Emeritus
Cornell Capa (1918-2008)
is evidenced in the ongoing
power of the image to occupy
a vital and central place in
contemporary culture.
Many recent protests, uprisings, and subsequent conflicts
demonstrate how photography can reflect and influence social
change worldwide. For decades, photography has raised
consciousness and inspired activism – it is now central to revolutions.
Through our combination of an educational curriculum that offers
instruction at every level, a schedule of up to 12 groundbreaking
exhibitions a year, an award-winning publications program, extensive
outreach programs, a collection of archival holdings of more
than 180,000 photographic negatives and transparencies, papers,
films, audio and video tapes, and 20,000 volumes, 50 periodicals,
Andrew White, PJ’11
and 2,000 vertical files of ephemera, ICP has established itself as a
vibrant force in the global photographic community.
ICP responds to a basic human need to communicate and make a
difference through programming that helps people define, develop,
and channel their skills and ideas. We strive to convert one-time
visitors into ongoing members of the ICP community and to create
an environment that encourages vigorous debate and a diversity of
ideas. We embrace photography’s ability to open new opportunities
for personal and aesthetic expression, transform popular culture,
and continually evolve to incorporate new technologies.
As we now know, technology continues to increase the use of
images as a primary source for learning and the communication of
information. Technology is enabling advancements in photography,
not making the use of images obsolete. The ability to understand
how images create and manipulate meaning – visual literacy –
continues to increase in importance as well.
The Future of ICP
In 2009, the ICP Board of Trustees launched an extensive planning
process designed to move the institution into the next stages of
growth necessary to meet our community’s needs and demands.
This robust planning process clarified our direction for the future.

Our mission-driven goals guide our plans for our future and include
enriching community, integrating learning, and resonating globally.
ICP will continue to be a welcoming place that encourages social
interaction and lively dialogue. Whether one comes to ICP to learn
to create photographs or experience challenging exhibitions, ICP
will offer new and interactive opportunities to engage with images,
ideas, and other people. We also plan to expand the work we do
with underserved communities and youth.
At ICP, students, staff, artists, and scholars work together to
create an integrated learning environment, comprising exhibitions,
courses, research facilities, and interdisciplinary public programs.
Because the impact of images is a global phenomenon, ICP
reaches beyond our local communities through an extensive group
of international students, a program of international traveling
exhibitions and award-winning publications that are distributed
worldwide. Collaborations and partnerships with institutions around
the world strengthen our ability to reach new audiences in new
ways. We strive to provide access to learning for people at every
stage of their lives.
Gratitude and Appreciation
Fiscal year 2011 marked the tenth anniversary of ICP’s expanded
relocation to Avenue of the Americas at 43rd Street. We are grateful
for the generosity of the Durst Organization, which has provided our
museum space on a long-term lease at a mere fraction of market value.
Our space across the street in the Grace Building, also part of the
ICP “campus,” has enabled us to establish a state-of-the-art school.
This report showcases ICP’s growth and accomplishments and
reflects an important collaboration between the Board of Trustees
and the staff. We have benefitted greatly from the inspired leadership
of Board Chair Caryl Englander and President Jeffrey Rosen,
who are well positioned to lead us into the next phase of ICP.
We acknowledge with deep appreciation the generosity of the many
donors who have supported ICP this year and to our dedicated
staff who help us shape and achieve our goals. We also express
our gratitude to our patrons, members, partners, students, alumni,
faculty, and the many past and present donors whose support and
involvement has enabled ICP to experience growth and progress
and plan for an ambitious future.
Letter from the chair aNd presideNt
Fiscal year 2011 began with the Board of Trustees and staff
continuing efforts to clarify ICP’s goals for the future. These goals
include leveraging ICP’s critical and intellectual leadership in the
photography field to educate, encourage creativity, and promote
visual literacy through all of our programs.
We know that ICP is unlike any other organization.
Our integrated approach to learning has combined
education, exhibitions, collections, and community
outreach for nearly 40 years. ICP programs
explore the power of images through a broad
range of learning opportunities and interaction.
In the future, these programs will expand to be
offered online, onsite, and around the world.
Just as photography has gone through a fundamental
reinvention, ICP has evolved to provide a
forum for new critical ideas, experimentation, and
innovation. ICP is a “center” where diverse
communities come together to share an interest
in how pictures are made, interpreted,
distributed, and preserved. We are committed
to further exploring the impact ICP can make on
the world and to achieving our ambitious goals to
expand and support our growing community.
New Leadership
We moved into fiscal year 2012 with new
leadership and a clear path for the future. As of
March 2012, we have elected five new Trustees,
including Doug Hansen, Renee Harbers Liddell,
Bob Jeffrey, Scott Mead, and Fabian Onetti.
These new Trustees bring a wealth of experience and expertise
in a variety of fields, including technology, advertising, finance
and philanthropy.
In August 2011, Ehrenkranz Director Willis E. Hartshorn informed
the Board of Trustees of his desire to transition to a different full-time
executive role at ICP. This transition is in progress as we near the
end of a global search for a new Director to lead the institution.
Known as “Buzz,” Hartshorn joined ICP in 1982 and held numerous
positions before being named Director in 1994. During his tenure,
the institution experienced unprecedented growth
and stability. He led ICP through its first capital
campaign and raised more than $20 million in 2001
to facilitate a move from 94th Street to its current
Midtown Manhattan sites on Avenue of the Americas
at 43rd Street.
Under Buzz’s leadership, ICP’s endowment grew
significantly, its exhibition and education programs
tripled, and outreach to underserved youth increased
by 45 percent. In addition, the collection doubled to
include photographs spanning three centuries and
the archives of Roman Vishniac, Weegee, Cornell
Capa, and Robert Capa.
Building on Buzz’s legacy, we look forward to the
next phase of ICP led by a new Director, who will
focus on maintaining the institution’s continued
preeminence in the photography field and
implementing our ambitious plans.
We thank Buzz for his leadership and the ICP staff
for its talent and dedication. We are grateful to all
those who support and champion ICP – we know
our growth and the ability to achieve our goals are
dependent on the generosity and encouragement
of our donors and friends. We cannot express often enough our
appreciation for all that you do and all that you make possible.
International Center
of Photography
includes 120,000 prints
database of ICP’s Photography
Collection. Each record includes
information about the photographer, title,
date, medium, as well as an image, when
available. Because of the large number of
works in the collection, not all are currently
included in eMuseum. But new items are
continually added to the online collection,
and records are constantly updated with
additional research and texts. In addition
to searching eMuseum, users can create
accounts and manage favorite images.
The entire Collection is accessible to
students, scholars, and other interested
visitors by appointment. Visitors may view
original prints, peruse archival documents,
or consult the Collection’s digital catalogue.
Each year, hundreds of students and
scholars visit our facilities to explore the
history of photography.
Since June 2010, the Collection has
acquired nearly 2,800 images, due to
the efforts and commitment of the
exhibitions
The ICP Museum is dedicated to exploring the possibilities
of the photographic medium through dynamic exhibitions of
historical and contemporary work. For nearly 40 years, ICP has
hosted a variety of exhibitions—from civil rights to high fashion,
from the Spanish Civil War to contemporary African culture. Our
curators seek to present the crossovers between photography
and contemporary art, as well as to showcase the work of key
photographers and emerging artists. The museum also features
numerous exhibitions related to documentary photography and
photojournalism. During fiscal year 2011, from May 21, 2010 to
August 28, 2011, ICP’s exhibitions were viewed by nearly 175,000
visitors.
In September 2010, ICP presented The Mexican Suitcase:
Rediscovered Spanish Civil War Negatives by Capa, Chim, and
Taro, a groundbreaking exhibition revealing the most famous
group of recovered negatives of the 20th century. Considered lost
since 1939, the so-called Mexican Suitcase is in fact three boxes
containing 4,500 negatives documenting the Spanish Civil War
by Robert Capa, Chim (David Seymour), and Gerda Taro. Capa,
Chim, and Taro risked their lives to witness history and show it to
the world, and The Mexican Suitcase contains some of their most
important images, documenting a turning point in photojournalism.
The images not only provide a uniquely rich and panoramic view
of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) — a conflict that changed
the course of European history — but also demonstrates how the
work of these legendary photographers laid the foundation for
modern war photography. The exhibition received critical acclaim
from numerous publications and media outlets including the New
York Times, and, due to its stunning popularity, continues to travel,
visiting other cultural institutions around the world.
We are grateful for the support and guidance of the Exhibitions
Committee, chaired by ICP Trustee Janice Stanton, and the
support of our many funders.

realized in the wide variety of classes,
workshops, public lectures, and programs
to a diverse student body. Our student
body represents virtually every country
around the world and all ages and
backgrounds. They join a community of
committed photographers who believe
that photography matters and that
pictures occupy a vital place in all forms
of communication. At ICP, students have
access to unparalleled resources: courses
designed for beginners and professionals, a
state-of-the-art facility, distinguished faculty,
the museum, collections, library, lecture
series, special events, and most importantly,
a community of passionate photographers—
making ICP the ideal place to explore one’s
creativity. As photography continues to
evolve, so do the educational offerings of our
school and the diversity of our offerings is a
testament to the vitality of our programs.
ICP education includes Continuing
Education classes, the ICP-Bard MFA
Program in Advanced Photographic
Studies, One-Year Certificate Programs
in Documentary Photography and
Photojournalism and General Studies,
and Community Programs. Serving more
than 5,000 students a year, we offer more
than 400 courses annually, ranging from
traditional film and darkroom practice
to digital media. Our facilities feature
digital labs, multimedia, and digital video
resources, black-and-white and color labs,
and studios.
We are proud of our talented and dedicated
alumni and faculty. Our alumni are shaping
our visual culture as artists, teachers,
photojournalists, editors, and applied
photographers. Their work is exhibited
around the world, and published in leading
newspapers, magazines, and monographs.
Our faculty is dedicated to nurturing new
talent and includes some of the world’s
most accomplished and innovative
practitioners, offering expert guidance and
inside perspectives.
Though the generosity of The Rita and
Alex Hillman Foundation, which donated
the Rita K. Hillman Education Gallery in
2009, ICP presents rotating exhibitions of
student, faculty, and alumni work in four
cycles per year. We thank the Education and
Community Programs Committee, under
the leadership of Bicky Kellner and Lois
Zenkel, which works closely with our staff
and faculty to develop student scholarships,
publications, and new offerings.
Continuing Education
The Continuing Education program
offers Foundation, Ideas & Practice, and
Professional Practice courses for students
at all skill levels. Foundation courses provide
the beginning, intermediate, and advanced
photographer with the fundamental
principles, techniques, and skills needed
to support their photographic practice
and vision. Ideas & Practice courses are
dedicated to inspiring the photographer’s
creative process, and Professional Practice
courses are designed to provide students
with myriad ways to enter and engage with
the photographic community. Classes meet
at all times of day and evening, seven days a
week and provide virtually every educational
need a photographer might imagine.
In the fall of 2011, ICP introduced the
Continuing Education Track Program. This
program seeks to help students develop
their photographic vision and technical
proficiency in a supportive environment, and
gives a unique opportunity to experience
what being part of a powerful community
can accomplish. Designed for students who
desire to advance their photographic work
to the next level, for a variety of outcomes,
the CE Track Program challenges
students to push their photography in new
directions, whether it’s for personal growth,
professional practice, or in preparation for an
advanced degree in the arts.
Full-time Programs
The ICP-Bard MFA Program in Advanced
Photographic Studies offers a rigorous
exploration of all aspects of photography
through an integrated curriculum of
professional and studio practice, critical
study, and Resident Artist Projects. At the
center of the program is an exploration of
the ways in which the photograph operates
in society and the ways in which students’
own practices work for them. The ICP-Bard
approach emphasizes creative vision and
openness to examining the many iterations
of the image—from photography to digital
imaging, installation, and video. Through
a variety of activities—including planning
conferences and studio visits, collaborating
on other projects in the area, publishing
books, and participating in art fairs—our
students emerge from our MFA program
poised and ready to engage with an
international community of image makers.
Each year 12 students join our community of
accomplished artists to further pursue their
personal engagement with photography.
The One-Year Certificate Programs
in Documentary Photography and
Photojournalism and General Studies

provide advanced students with an intensive
yearlong course of study that strengthens
personal vision, teaches professional
practices, and explores the many disciplines
that inform media and art today.
The Documentary Photography and
Photojournalism Program focuses on the
investigative skills and technical knowledge
necessary to succeed in the complex
and constantly changing world of visual
journalism. With ICP’s long-standing
commitment to documentary practice,
this program engages faculty who are
among the foremost practitioners in the
photographic field. Visiting photographers
discuss new media, business, and
methodologies, as well as political,ethical,
and social concerns.
The General Studies Program embraces the
study of photographic practices, including
fine art, editorial, fashion, documentary, and
experimental image production. With the
goals of broadening each student’s vision
and building a foundation for individual
practice, the program explores the history
of photography, contemporary theory,
craft and technique, and personal image
making. The foundation seminar considers
the questions that arise from the cultural,
political, economic, and psychological
uses of images. Visiting artists, critiques
of student work, and discussions of
contemporary ideas and artwork help
students extend the possibilities of selfexpression,
while defining professional and
artistic working methods.
Community Programs and Partnerships
A year-round schedule of Community
Programs brings the rewards of
photographic expression to people of all
ages and backgrounds and our Community
Partnerships provide more than 250
students from underserved communities
with life skills and educational resources. ICP
collaborates with schools and community-
Teen Academy
ICP’s year-round Teen Academy offers
programs for up to 450 high school
students, 50 percent of whom receive
scholarships, to develop their understanding
and knowledge of photography. The
programs range from 10-week classes
to our yearlong intensive Imagemakers
program. Our Teen Foto Fridays program
invites high school students to participate
in free open labs, technical workshops,
fieldtrips to museums and galleries, and
college portfolio preparation.
Museum Education
Our Museum Education program provides
guided exhibition tours, introducing visitors
to photography and relating the work
exhibited in our galleries to curriculum. Led
by Museum Educators, tours are tailored to
the needs of each group by incorporating
selected themes from the exhibitions into
various subject matter and/or classroom
learning. Through tours, ICP serves more
than 10,000 visitors from over 250 schools
and organizations.
Library
The ICP library is dedicated to the furnishing
of information and inspiration by providing
access to our extensive collection of photo
books, periodicals, artist files, and digital
resources. The library's holdings are a
mirror and record of ICP's work, community,
and story. Our staff and resources are
committed to serving photographers,
students, scholars, researchers, staff, and
other users through on-site access to more
2,000 vertical files of ephemera from all over
the world relating to photography. Each
year, the library is visited by more than 6,000
photo enthusiasts.
We thank the Library Committee, chaired by
Stephanie Shuman and Evan Mirapaul, for
its ongoing support to increase the library’s
holdings and create access to them, while
acting as an advocate for the expansion
of our programs, services, and outreach.
Special thanks to Stephanie Shuman for
endowing the position of Librarian, affirming
the values of ICP having a dynamic library.
ICP’s External Affairs team includes Development, Marketing
and Communications staff. We are grateful for the generosity
and commitment of all those who have made the achievements
acknowledged in this report possible, including our members,
donors, partners, visitors, employees, students, and faculty.
Development
The Development team generated more than $5 million during fiscal
year 2011, which represents an increase of 15 percent from fiscal
year 2010.
individual and annual Giving
Individual Giving includes contributions from ICP Trustees and other
individuals, membership dues, and special event revenue. It resulted
in the largest percentage of support in fiscal year 2011, totaling more
than $3 million.
Trustees contributed the largest percentage of individual giving at
$2.5 million of total contributed income. The program committees,
ICP’s Individual Giving programs, allow members to take an active
role in offering funding for projects and programs. In addition to
their own gifts, members of the Acquisitions Committee help secure
significant new works for ICP’s Collection; the Education and
Community Programs Committee helps sponsor education and
outreach programs; the Exhibitions Committee supports several
exhibitions each year; the Library Committee helps build the library’s
collection and enhance its ability to serve thousands of annual
visitors; and the Publications Committee promotes wider recognition
for ICP’s award-winning catalogues. In fiscal year 2011, Program
Committee fundraising totaled more than $250,000.
The Annual Fund surpassed its goal by more than 50 percent,
Investments
ICP has adopted investment and spending policies for its permanently and temporarily restricted
endowments and its unrestricted Board designated funds that seek to provide a predictable
stream of operating income while preserving the purchasing power of the original investments.
Investments are managed on a total return basis and utilizing a broad diversification of investment
managers. The utilization of investments for operations during the 2011 fiscal year was 5% of the
investment portfolio’s average market value for each of the previous 12 quarters drawn quarterly.
The total return of ICP’s investment portfolio for the year ending June 30, 2011 was 12.7%.
