There is no more important part of your studio
than your monitor system. Without a great
monitor system, you won’t be able to clearly
hear what’s going on with your audio, whether
it’s songs, sound design, spoken word, soundtracks,
sample libraries, loops — whatever it is you’re
working on in your studio.
The goal of your monitor system is to produce fl at, neutral, uncolored
sound. This is essential — the relative frequency balance going into
your monitors must be the same as what you hear at your listening
position. If what you’re hearing is colored in any way, then you won’t be
able to make the decisions you need to make about tonality, balances,
levels, panning, and other aspects of the sound quality.
Notice that throughout most of the last paragraph I used the phrase
“monitor system” instead of “monitors.” That’s because there’s more to
accurately hearing sound in your studio than just the monitor speakers
you are using. All the gear that produces the sound, the stands and
furniture in the room, and the room
itself combine to create the
total monitoring system that
you listen to. If there’s a
weak link at any point in the
system chain, then the audio
it produces and that you hear
will be less than accurate.
“Less than accurate” can
result in a variety of problems.
Typically, the audio will sound
fi ne in your studio, but when
it’s played elsewhere — in
your car, at your friend’s house,
in a boombox — the sound
will be different. There may be
too much or too little low end,
too much or too little high end,
balances that are off so that
you can’t hear certain parts,
a loss of presence, hum or
distortion that you didn’t hear
in your room, and so on. In
engineer speak, the mix isn’t
“transportable” — it doesn’t
translate well when
played back in other
environments.
With careful design, a monitor system will produce audio that is neutral
— and therefore transportable — and accurate. Here are some things
to consider as you design and assemble your monitor system:
Speaker types — Speakers are available in sizes from ultra-compact
to multi-driver behemoths. Smaller speakers, with an 8-inch or so (or
smaller) woofer, are usually intended for nearfi eld listening — within
three to fi ve feet away. Monitors with larger woofers are usually
intended for mid- or far-fi eld listening. For most home and project
studio applications, nearfi eld monitors work very well. They take up
less space, are less subject to acoustic anomalies in the room, can be
quite accurate, and can cover a wide frequency range. If you need tons
of power, high volume, or have a bigger room, then larger monitors
may be what you want.
Real-world references — Most engineers use at least two sets of
monitors (plus headphones). One set is designed to be as accurate as
possible, while the other is intended to be a real-world reference — a
smaller set that emulates the sound of a TV, radio, or car speaker. This
provides a different reference to consult, to help ensure the quality of
your mixes.
Active/passive — Monitors are available in active or passive versions.
Active monitors have built-in electronics, usually including power
amps. All that’s required to use them is a power outlet and a line-level
signal feed from your mixer or audio interface.
Active monitors are convenient and space
effi cient. Passive monitors do not contain
built-in amplifi cation or other electronics
— an external power amp is required. Each
type has its proponents, though today the
overwhelming majority of monitors on the
market are active, because of their popularity
with engineers.
Subwoofer — In some cases, your main
monitors may not produce enough low-end
response to cover your needs. Some compact
nearfi eld monitors, for example, simply aren’t
big enough to reach down to the lowest
frequencies. Or, you may work on a type of
music that requires extensive bass levels.
In either case, you’re a prime candidate
for adding a subwoofer to your system. By
carefully integrating a subwoofer with your
main monitors, you can create a seamless
full-range system with plenty of bottom end.
Personally, I have a subwoofer in my studio,
and I use it for two specifi c purposes: to
occasionally verify the extent of any very low
frequencies in a signal or mix and to use as a
“safety” check to ensure that there aren’t any
sub-bass noises going on that I am unable to
hear on my main monitors.

Monitor management — To control your monitor system, you’ll
probably want some type of hardware. While software DAWs and
audio programs can change volume levels, using them to control
monitors is often not ideal. A small mixer, an audio interface with
monitor control capabilities built in, or a dedicated monitor control
box will provide the functions that are needed: input selection;
monitor selection; calibration; and, of course, volume control! Most
types of monitor control hardware also provide headphone amps
and level control and may have other functions, such as soloing and
muting individual speakers, converting a stereo mix to mono for
phase checks, talkback to musicians, and more.
Positioning — Carefully placing your monitors in your room will
go a long way toward ensuring accurate response. Try to keep
as much distance as possible between your monitors and room
boundaries (walls, ceiling, corners, and other surfaces), to cut down
on refl ections — at least two or three feet away; farther is ideal.
Aim the speakers so that they “fi re” down the longest dimension of
the room. Many studio designers recommend situating the listening
position so that it is about 38% of the way back in the room. The left
and right speakers should be placed so that they form an equalsided
triangle with the listener’s head. Height-wise, place them so
that the tweeters are at or slightly above the listener’s ears. Try to
make the listening environment as symmetrical as possible, in order
to maximize imaging accuracy.

to the stands or other surfaces. Speaking of stands, a good od
set of nonresonant stands is usually a better base for your
monitors than a desk or other surface that might resonate e or
refl ect sound.
Room treatment — Many experts feel that the most
important element in a studio monitoring system is the room om
itself. There are two aspects to controlling sound in a room:
bass resonances (or room modes) and refl ections (uppermidrange
and high frequencies). Various types of bass traps
are used to absorb low-frequency resonances and to
even out the bass response of the room. Virtually every
room needs low-end control to one extent or another.
High frequencies, on the other hand, can be addressed
either with absorbers at refl ection points (such as foam
or fi berglass panels) or with diffusors, which break
up large refl ections and scatter the resulting smaller
refl ections in different directions.

DSP — Some active monitors feature built-in DSP (digital signal
processing) that is designed to compensate for acoustical problems
in a room. DSP can never replace a well-treated room, but when
used in conjunction with acoustic treatment, it can result in an
amazingly well-tuned monitoring system. Certain plug-ins and
standalone software can also help you to tune various aspects of
your room’s response.
Headphones — A good set of headphones can provide a great
reference for “detail” listening. Most experts don’t recommend
mixing solely on headphones (though it is possible with a lot of
practice). But, headphones may reveal things to you that speakers
may not — distortion, level imbalances, and more.
