Chers Amis,
September at FIAF once again brings
us Crossing the Line, and this year the
fourth edition of our acclaimed annual
festival offers New Yorkers unique
programming full of fresh perspectives
and groundbreaking green ideas.
We are thrilled to present innovative
new work by returning artists and
delighted to welcome new collaborators
throughout New York City. I’m personally
excited for a special addition this year
called Farm City. This celebration of
Urban Agriculture will take you on an
evocative journey exploring the thriving
frontiers of rooftop and parking lot
farming, urban beekeeping, and more.
After the success of our spring urban
gardening series, come enjoy our fall
Art de Vivre events devoted to the art
of flowers with noted floral designer
Olivier Giugni.
As always, FIAF in the Fall is a time of
culture and celebration, and I look
forward to discovering everything our
programs have to offer with you.
Bien amicalement,
New Literary Series 06

Write About Now
07
FIAF, Bookforum, and the Villa Gillet are
proud to present a new literary program,
Write About Now. In this new series,
contemporary French and American
authors engage in dynamic discussions,
each organized around a topic that
constitutes a cultural common ground
and jumping-off point for fascinating
literary exchange. Moderated by noted
Bookforum editors.
Based in New York, Bookforum has been
providing incisive reviews of literature
since 1994. The Villa Gillet, based in Lyon,
brings together artists, writers, and
researchers for debate on issues facing
the world today.
Stranger Than Fiction:
Characters as Outsiders
Wednesday, October 27
at 7:30pm
Conversation in English between
François Beaune (Un homme louche)
and Joshua Ferris (The Unnamed
and Then We Came to the End).
Some of the most memorable characters
in contemporary fiction experience
life as strangers, far removed from the
“normalcy” of the life of the reader. Yet
these characters, often through unique
points of view, turn out to offer acute
perceptions of things as they really
are. In the case of Beaune’s Un homme
louche, such insight is provided through
the diaries of a “louche” man; with
The Unnamed, Ferris creates a protagonist
whose mental disorder drives him to
walk to exhaustion.
Florence Aubenas (Le quai de Ouistreham)
and Ted Conover (Newjack: Guarding
How Roads Are Changing the World
and the Way We Live Today).
Journalists often move from observers
to active participants in the worlds they
describe. To immerse themselves in
the community they seek to report on,
they may change their appearance and
identity. Aubenas became unemployed
and immersed herself in the world
of unskilled and insecure employees;
Conover transformed himself into a guard
at Sing Sing, one of the most notorious
prisons in the U.S.
The Bald Soprano
By Eugene Ionesco
Wednesday, November 10
at 11am & 1pm
Grades 6–12
The Bald Soprano, an explosive play
in the tradition of the French Theater of
the Absurd, was written by Romanian
and French playwright Eugene Ionesco
when he was struggling to learn English.
Phyllis Roome, a New York-based
director and former member of the Royal
National Theatre in London, directs
graduate drama students in a hilarious
staged reading, sure to appeal to young
people learning a foreign language.
