This offering of fine, fully mature Rioja is the result of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity presented to The Wine Society earlier this year where we gained access to a remarkable private collection of Rioja owned by a top restaurant in northern Spain (the owner of which had stopped trading). The provenance of these wines is beyond reproach: the wines were purchased direct from the producers upon release and stored in the perfectly cool, dark conditions of cellars carved into a rock face near Bilbao, on Spain’s breezy north coast. We have visited the premises to verify the conditions and tasted through the wines on several occasions. Viña Real Reserva Rioja, 1995 This attractive, highly scented Alavesa Rioja with strawberry and earthy aromas is beautifully delicate and fine. Smooth, harmonious and lively. 13.5% Limited to three bottles only per member. ref RJ-SP8331 £35 bottle Contino Reserva Rioja, 1995 From Contino’s own vineyards around the San Rafael estate, the 1995 is 90% tempranillo, 5% mazuelo and 5% garnacha. A somewhat deeper and more intense wine than the Viña Real above, this has wonderfully complex aromas of cedar and tobacco. Plump, fleshy and seamlessly integrated. Now to 2018. 13.5% Limited to three bottles only per member. ref RJ-SP8411 £40 bottle La Rioja Alta 904 Gran Reserva Rioja, 1994 Pale, mature garnet in colour, this graceful, silky and integrated Rioja lives up to the reputation of the exceptional 1994 vintage. 12.5% Limited to one bottle only per member. ref RJ-SP8431 £99 bottle Viña Real Gran Reserva Rioja, 1991 Viña Real’s gran reserva is only made in specific vintages from a selection of the very best hand-harvested Alavesa fruit. The 1991 is expressive and layered with ripe, almost roasted fruit and backed by finely structured tannins. 13% Limited to three bottles only per member. ref RJ-SP8341 £40 bottle OLDER BOTTLES: A FEW USEFUL TIPS WHEN TO DRINK All these wines are fully mature and will provide plenty of drinking pleasure throughout 2013 and until 2015; drink dates are provided for those wines that may still improve with further ageing. OPENING AND SERVING OLDER BOTTLES We recommend standing the bottle upright for 24 hours before serving to allow any sediment to fall to the bottom of the bottle. Because of their age, these bottles will need to be opened with care. We recommend using a traditional spiral corkscrew (the longer the spiral, the better), as these offer the greatest control and leverage. The corkscrew should be inserted as far into the cork as possible (take care when doing so, as some of the cork may be moist and ‘crumbly’) and withdrawn very slowly. LEVELS OF WINE IN OLDER BOTTLES VARY Over time there is a natural, but very slow, evaporation of wine through the cork. The gap between the bottom of the cork and the wine (known as the ‘ullage’) therefore tends to increase over long periods of ageing. The older the bottle, the lower the level is likely to be. We are only selling wines from this parcel that we believe are of an acceptable ullage. A NOTE ON LABELLING Several of these bottles predate existing legislation for alcohol levels and ageing classifications. The back labels of some of the older wines will state ‘Vino de Crianza’. Please note that this does not refer to the ageing classification, which became legally codified in 1970, but is used as a more general term to note a wine that has been aged prior to release. Murrieta Reserva Rioja, 1985 Creamy, mellow and complete Rioja which has developed magnificently in bottle, combining freshness with complex secondary aromas. This is reminiscent of a mature top-level Bordeaux. 12.5% Limited to two bottles only per member. ref RJ-SP8421 £45 bottle Viña Real Reserva Rioja, 1982 The 1982 is highly rated by the CVNE winemaking team; indeed, Jésus Madrazo (Contino), whose father made this wine, says this is his favourite after the impressive 1964. Today the 1982 is delicious. Rich, flamboyant and exotic, supported with mouth-wateringly fresh acidity and muscular tannins, this is perfect now. 13% Limited to six bottles only per member. ref RJ-SP8251 £45 bottle Viña Real Reserva Rioja, 1981 A delicate, refined Viña Real with a heavenly bouquet, quite Burgundian in many ways. Smoky and supple with wonderfully absorbed tannins. 13% Limited to six bottles only per member. ref RJ-SP8261 £45 bottle CVNE Imperial Reserva Rioja, 1981 This pale mahogany reserva is a benchmark example of mature Rioja: earthy, enticing secondary flavours, silky sweet palate and soft, long finish. A wine to lose oneself in. 13% Limited to one bottle only per member. ref RJ-SP8361 £55 bottle CVNE Imperial Gran Reserva Rioja, 1981 Full, comforting gran reserva with density of flavour and a structure built on power, grip and acidity. Like all the wines in this offer, it is ready to drink. 13% Limited to one bottle only per member. ref RJ-SP8391 £79 bottle CVNE Imperial Reserva Rioja, 1978 A completely mature reserva that will bring immediate drinking pleasure. This is savoury and meaty with a touch of earthy sous bois, and is graceful, light and effortless in its balance. 13% Limited to six bottles only per member. ref RJ-SP8351 £55 bottle Viña Real Gran Reserva Rioja, 1976 Bright, clear mahogany in colour, this is a finely tuned, leathery Viña Real. It is succulent, evolved and powerful, standing out for its lift and revitalising acidity. 13.5% Limited to six bottles only per member. ref RJ-SP8281 £79 bottle CVNE Imperial Gran Reserva Rioja, 1976 This perfumed gran reserva is 80% tempranillo, 10% graciano and 5% each garnacha and mazuelo. Pale garnet in colour, this is sumptuous, rich and spicy. 13% Limited to two bottles only per member. ref RJ-SP8381 £79 bottle CVNE Imperial Reserva Rioja, 1975 Very pale, fully mature reserva which has great charm, complexity and lightness of touch yet retains its focus and poise. 12.5% Limited to three bottles only per member. ref RJ-SP8371 £60 bottle Contino Rioja, 1975 The 1975 is a classic Rioja blend of tempranillo (85%), mazuelo (8%) and garnacha (5%) but with a small sprinkling of the white grape viura (2%). This wine is something of a rarity, being only Contino’s second vintage. Cedary, mellow and à point.
