FACULTY OF MEDIA AND PERFORMANCE
Introduction
“Photography deals exquisitely with appearances, but nothing is what appears to be”
(Duane Michals)
Dear Student
On behalf of the course team I would like to welcome you to the BA (Hons)
Photography course and we look forward to meeting you on Monday 22 September
2014. To prepare for the course I would ask you to begin to read the recommended
books and regularly read photographic and art magazines, journals in addition to
browsing the web. They are a good way to keep informed about contemporary
photography and current exhibitions.
The course is primarily a visual exploration and requires you to generate your own
subject matter for projects. It would be useful if you could begin to think about what
it is about life that really interests and excites/provokes you by keeping a journal of
your observations and thoughts. This will prepare you for the first project that will
be given to you during your induction week. The summer project is also an excellent
way of introducing yourself and your work to your peers and tutors.
“Always take yourself seriously... it’s not the same as being pompous, or overly selfassured,
but it is important to understand that the small little ideas that creep up in your
mind, often contain the germ of a much larger project. All great art wasn’t born as great
art. It first needed to be recognized by the artist him/herself. Through his or her belief in
it, it became true” (Wolfgang Tillmans)
We want to offer you the best support while you are with us so if you have a
disability or additional needs, and wish to discuss any matter in a confidential way,
please contact the disability team at wellbeing@aub.ac.uk or by calling 01202
363291/363106.
Above all, enjoy your experience here and feel free to express your creativity in an
environment that values the individual image-maker and fully supports
experimentation and risk taking.
