In future you can switch the auxiliary functions in your car on and off by radio remote control, thus considerably 

reducing assembly expenditure. Do-it-yourself fitting has been simplified.

Lens cleaning systems 

The legislator prescribes the use of a lens cleaning system when 

xenon dipped beam headlamps are used! Hella lens cleaning 

systems work on the water-jet principle, where the kinetic energy 

from large drops of water are used to blast the dirt particles off 

the lens and rinse them away.

Already compulsory in many countries, now making the running here, 

as well. Hella daytime running lights make Europe's roads safer. 

European studies* show: when vehicles drive with the lights on during the day the number 

of potentially fatal collisions is reduced by 25% in comparison with vehicles without light. If

The daytime running lights are automatically switched on when the key is turned in the 

ignition, made possible by a special relay. it’s no longer possible to “forget” by mistake. 

This is also true for switching off. The daytime running lights go off automatically as soon 

as the dipped beam lights are switched on. 

Minimum current consumption 

Increased fuel consumption – as is the case when driving with the dipped beam on – is 

negligible. There is little strain placed on battery and alternator – the lamps are based on 

6 Watt halogen bulbs. 

Quick assembly 

The daytime running lights are supplied as a complete set. 

A relay for fully automatic switching is included in the set, as are the necessary attachment

The Hella test track for innovative 

lighting technology 

A lot can of course be developed and even more 

simulated in the laboratory. And yet real progress 

is only really proved in practical applications. 

Which is why we have built our own light testing 

facility, 200 m long. Because it's only there that 

we can test the results of our research and development 

in practice, allowing us to improve further. 

There are over 1,600 engineers and technicians 

around the globe helping us in this task, all of 

whom are exclusively dedicated to this segment 

– with a high level of competence, always on 

the lookout for further innovations and improvements 

for automotive lighting and with research 

results to be proud of. 

Xenon lighting systems 

When the first generation of xenon headlamps 

went into series production in 1992 at Hella, 

this represented a breakthrough in the history 

of automotive lighting. Twice as much light – 

requiring only two thirds of the power – 

guarantees brighter, more wider illuminated 

roads and daylight quality, even at night. Which 

means: relaxed driving, increased safety. 

Bi-xenon 

The development of xenon headlamps was only 

the start of the future of xenon technology at 

Hella, the European market leader. The result of 

ongoing research and further development is 

the bi-xenon projection module. Dipped beam 

and main beam light from one single xenon light 

source shine identical, bright white light – 

optimally matched to daylight. 

LED 

The LED – light emitting diode – is about to 

revolutionise part of the lighting world as the 

successor to the filament bulb. The first LEDs, 

at the time exclusively red, were used commercially 

for the first time in 1962. Their efficiency 

has increased ten-fold every ten years ever 

since. 

Lower energy consumption, long service life, 

quick reaction time – these are the outstanding 

features of Hella LED technology. 

CELIS ® light guides 

Three years ago Hella was involved in the development 

of the revolutionary lighting concept for 

vehicles given the name CELIS ® (Central 

Lighting Systems). In this system, extremely 

flexible fibreglass guides with diameters from 

one to seven millimetres transport the light to 

where it is required. 

The advantages: light guide fibres are extremely 

versatile and can be adapted to a wide range of 

different design, installation and environment 

requirements.

Hella researches, develops, 

tests. Result: intelligent light. 

An important aim of Hella’s research is to get closer 

and closer to turning the vision of accident-free 

driving into reality through new or further developed 

systems. 

Since accidents are frequently caused by poor visibility 

or late recognition of traffic situations, the 

development and improvement of lighting systems 

plays an important role in achieving this aim. The 

more effective the automatic adaptation to different 

situations and light conditions is, the higher the driving 

comfort and safety on the roads at night will 

be. 

AFS – Adaptive 

Frontlighting System 

Today, new developments in the fields of sensors 

and actuators enable the position of the headlamp 

to be regulated exactly. In order to implement 

these technical possibilities in new vehicles, manufacturers 

of vehicles, lamps and headlamps joined 

forces as early as in 1992 to form the joint EUREKA 

project EU 1403 AFS (Adaptive Frontlighting 

System). 

As well as to define technical parameters and 

requirements, the aim of the project was also to 

implement the necessary changes in legislation. 

The AFS project is being turned into automotive 

reality in two stages. 

Stage 1: With the publication of the changed ECE 

regulations R48, R112 and R98, dynamic bend 

lighting has been approved for use on European 

roads. 

Stage 2: From 2006 onwards, new beam patterns 

will probably be permitted (such as town light, 

country light, motorway light, adverse weather 

light). At this point, adaptation to the traffic and 

weather situation will be possible alongside the 

adaptation to the course of the road already presented 

here. 

VARILIS ® 

The variable intelligent lighting system from the 

Hella research and development laboratory is called 

VARILIS ® . The automatic, sensor-controlled 

switching on of the most reasonable lighting function 

results in adaptation to the respective situation. 

Speed, weather conditions, driving through 

curves, on the motorway or along country roads 

are all taken into account. This new kind of light 

noticeably relieves strain on the driver, resulting in 

more relaxed driving and increased safety. 

DynaView ® 

Even when driving slowly and carefully: how the 

course of the road continues after a curve in the 

road can often only be recognised very late, too 

late. DynaView ® – an invention by Hella engineers – 

solves the problem. "Driving blind" is now a thing 

of the past. This is guaranteed by the dual reflectors 

of the DynaView ® system. The system is made 

up of 4 headlamps: two for the conventional driving 

light and two additional headlamps for illuminating 

the curve. Depending on the alignment of 

the curve one of the two cornering headlamps will 

be switched on – sensor-controlled – to illuminate 

the curve or corner ahead. 

Daytime running lights 

When vehicle lights are switched on for driving 

during the day, the number of potentially fatal collisions 

is reduced by 25%. 

This is shown by European studies and long-term 

trials in practice. If less serious accidents are also 

included in the statistics, 50 % of all collisions 

could be avoided. Hella daytime running light is 

automatically switched on when the ignition key is 

turned. There is hardly any strain on the battery or 

the alternator.

It is important, sometimes even absolutely vital, to 

see well and be seen in good time. As a road user, 

you have to rely on additional light sources at twilight, 

in poor lighting conditions and at night. 

Around 22,990 people work for Hella in 54 manufacturing 

facilities, production subsidiaries and joint 

venture companies around the globe in order to 

give every car driver ideal light in excellent quality, 

attractively designed, at all times and everywhere. 

For this reason, Hella products are tested continually 

and checked for function and quality right 

from the development phase. And only then are 

they approved for sale. 

Xenon lighting systems 

Xenon lamps produce light using the principle of 

gas discharge. Instead of a glowing filament, a 

spark discharge between two electrodes converts 

the inert gas xenon in the bulb into so-called plasma. 

Alongside the solid, liquid and gaseous states, 

plasma, the "fourth" state of matter, occurs in 

nature on the earth in the form of lightning, spark 

discharge, explosions and in exhaust gases. 

Xenon lighting systems from Hella significantly 

increase light output, luminance and service life 

without increasing current consumption, even in 

comparison with halogen bulbs. 

Hella xenon lighting systems comply fully with the 

legal regulations for the use of light sources of this 

type – which is not something that can be said for 

all the systems currently available on the market. 

For this reason, make sure the lamps you buy 

have ECE approval, since the general certification 

of your vehicle will become invalid otherwise. 

LED 

Light emitting diodes – LEDs – are semiconductor 

diodes that convert power directly into light. In 

contrast to the conventional filament bulb, they 

are not sensitive to mechanical impact. They have 

no hollow body that could implode. In relation to 

their size, efficiency, durability and service life they 

can be compared to conventional filament bulbs in 

the same way a modern HiFi system can be compared 

with an old tube radio. 

Hella has developed LED technology further, resulting 

in even lower power consumption, an extremely 

long service life and a short reaction time. 

Above all, LEDs open up completely new dimensions 

in the sector of light design. 

CELIS ® light guide 

Light guide technology is current "state-of-the-art" 

– in other words the best modern technology is 

able to perform at the moment. In the area of fibre 

optic lighting, Hella was the first company to 

design this system for use in motor vehicles. 

With CELIS ® , the Central Lighting System, it is 

possible to set trends not only in the interior, but 

also on the bodywork of the vehicle. The most 

demanding project from a technical point of view 

is the "corona lighting" around headlamps. 



Tested and approved 

All the Hella products listed in the catalogue have 

type approval according to the European ECE 

regulations for tested vehicle components and 

fully comply with the legal regulations. They are 

approved – without further approval procedures 

being necessary – for immediate installation in the 

vehicle. 

Be careful – dangerous products! 

Unfortunately, there are products – xenon retrofit products 

in particular – available on the market which are 

prohibited in the area governed by the Economic 

Commission for Europe (ECE Western Europe). 

Products of this kind endanger road traffic safety. For 

this reason, the general certification of a vehicle becomes 

invalid whenever these non-permissible retrofit sets 

are used. 

Dangerous and prohibited (using xenon as an 

example) 

According to ECE regulation R48 and § 50, section 10 

STVO (German Highway Code), only complete xenon 

headlamp systems may be retrofitted in Europe. These 

consist of a set of type-approved headlamps, an automatic 

headlamp levelling device and a headlamp cleaning 

system (mandatory regulation). 

Unauthorized, illegal "conversions" of halogen headlamps 

to xenon are both dangerous and prohibited. 

Reason: this "DIY work" leads to glare being increased 

up to 100-fold – putting other road users in extreme 

danger. 

This means: The general certification of the 

vehicle is no longer valid, insurance protection is 

limited. 

The reason: every headlamp is only granted its type 

approval together with the light source (halogen or 

xenon) with which it is intended to be operated. If this 

light source is exchanged for a light source that has no 

type approval or has not been designed for the type 

approval of the headlamp, the type approval is no longer 

valid and neither is the general certification of the vehicle 

(§ 19 STVZO (FMVSS), section 2, sentence 2, no. 1). 

Driving without general certification in turn leads to limitation 

of insurance protection (§ 5, section 1, no. 3 

KfzPffW, German vehicle compulsory liability insurance 

regulations). Those who sell such lighting equipment 

without type approval must also reckon with damage 

claims from buyers. Because when passing on these 

parts, the seller not only takes over the guarantee that 

they may be used for the foreseen purpose, but possibly 

also the risks of damage, and that without an upper 

limit. 

Completely legal, on the other hand, is the retrofitting 

of xenon headlamps such as the ones available 

from Hella as complete sets (type-approved twin headlamps, 

headlamp levelling device and headlamp cleaning 

system) – with the well-known advantages: 

• More than twice the light output in comparison with 

halogen lamps 

• Brighter and wider illumination of the road and light 

quality approaching that of daylight 

• Hazards at the edge of the road or obstacles in front 

of the vehicle are recognised earlier 

• Pedestrians and cyclists are more easily visible 

• Xenon light emphasises contrasts and coloured vision 

• Spatial vision is improved in poor weather conditions 

Pirates – not only at sea 

Test marking on headlamps and combination rear lamps 

protects car drivers, garages and parts dealers from 

product piracy. If these standardised markings are not 

present, the products are very probably fakes. Protect 

yourself against illegal products! Rely on type-approved 

accessories from well-known brand manufacturers such 

as Hella. 

How to read and understand the combinations of numbers 

and letters 

Example: You find the following marking on the lens of 

an H4 standard headlamp: 

HC/R 25 E1 02A 44457. 

This means: 

H Halogen 

C Dipped beam light 

R Main beam light 

/ The slash means the dipped beam and main 

beam light cannot be switched on at the same 

time. 

25 Reference number that provides information 

about the luminous intensity of the driving lamp. 

The usual figures are: 10; 12.5; 17.5; 20; 25; 

27.5; 30 and 37.5. 

The sum of all the driving lamps switched on 

simultaneously on a vehicle must not exceed the 

reference figure 75.

cornering light 

Driving into uncertain darkness is a thing of the past. Thanks to

The DynaView ® system actually comprises four headlamps, two of 

which supply conventional main beam light and one of which – 

depending on the course of the curve – illuminates the curve ahead. 

This cornering light is controlled by an intelligent chip which continually 

calculates the respective transversal acceleration of the vehicle 

and automatically switches the cornering light on – absolutely independently 

of external technology such as GPS-controlled systems, 

for example. Night-time drives down winding roads thus become 

much more safer and relaxed.

Current Hella test vehicle with variable intelligent lighting system VARILIS ® 

Headlamps provide light in the traffic area in front of the vehicle. It is necessary 

for them to satisfy the requirements of all road users. The dipped beam 

functions in particular are subject to legal regulations to protect oncoming 

traffic from irritating glare. 

“Turning night into day” by maximizing the light performance is therefore possible 

only with justified restrictions. Within the scope of legal regulations, 

hazard situations resulting from poor visibility can be reduced step by step 

by improving many headlamp parameters. 

Xenon systems still offer the best light available in terms of quality and 

quantity. Optimum light distribution in all driving situations is ensured by 

auxiliary systems required by law. Page five contains details on headlamp 

cleaning systems, which are mandatory for all Xenon dipped beam 

systems in addition to automatic headlamp leveling. 

Optical systems are required between the surroundings to be perceived by 

the driver and the light source. These minimize the unused percentage of the 

luminous flux, provide the desired distribution of the headlamp beam in the 

driver’s field of vision and also contribute significantly to the appearance of 

the vehicle. Additional information on this is given on Page 6. 

Hella can also provide active support for the design. Our design engineers 

work with state-of-the-art CAD systems hand-in-hand with headlamp design 

engineers. See Page 6 for examples of design studies. 

The adaptive frontlighting system AFS adapts automatically to the current 

driving situation. The first headlamps with cornering lamps and dynamic bend 

lighting are now going into mass production. But this does not mean that 

development has stopped. Page 8 describes the advancements that are 

currently in progress.

Halogen light sources still represent the most frequently used type of bulb 

for automotive headlamps. Halogen bulbs are continuously being further 

developed, especially in terms of the achievable service life and minimization 

of the inner geometric tolerances. 

Following the H7 bulb, the bulb family H8, H9, H11 was introduced. The 

“family concept” in the development of single filament bulbs provides a 

high degree of flexibility for headlamp manufacturers in the layout of optical 

systems in terms of light functions, design, light output and resistance of 

the headlamp to thermal stress. 

New developments are also available in the area of double filament bulbs. 

For example, an American development is the NDF (New Double Filament), 

which has been included as H13 in the European Regulation ECE R37. The 

DFCS (Double Filament Complex Shape) bulb is still under development. 

This bulb is being developed in cooperation with European headlamp and 

bulb manufacturers. 

Hella is always involved and integrated comprehensively in the optimization 

of existing halogen bulbs as well as new developments in this area. 

Cooperation with bulb manufacturers in the development phase as well as 

on specification committees contributes to the overall optimization of new 

light concepts. 

The market penetration for Xenon light is increasing continuously, right 

down to the compactcar range. These Xenon lamps are gas discharge 

lamps which use an electric arc instead of a filament as with a halogen 

bulb. This arc is ignited and then maintained between two exactly positioned 

electrodes. Complicated electronic ballast units are required for this process. 

Additional regulations for Xenon dipped beam light 

Especially the high light output is taken into consideration in the ECE 

regulations. In the area governed by ECE regulations, headlamps with 

Xenon dipped beams can be used only in combination with an automatic 

or dynamic headlamp leveling control and a headlamp cleaning system. 

Hella offers various solution concepts and integration possibilities for these 

two systems.

In comparison to halogen lamps, Xenon lamps offer the following advantages:

•Significantly lower electrical power consumption – only 35 W 

• Lower thermal system stress 

•Significantly longer service life 

• Light color almost equivalent to daylight 


Headlamp power-wash 

system 



Hella has been developing and supplying headlamp power-wash systems 

since 1972. The systems developed by Hella and preferred from the very 

beginning, using the water jet principle have a minimum effect on the vehicle 

design thanks to the concealed installation possibilities. They also offer the 

additional significant advantage that such systems can be used to clean the 

plastic cover lenses being used increasingly on headlamps without scratching. 

Such cleaning systems require type testing in conformance with ECE R45 in 

terms of their cleaning effect. Moreover, they are mandatory equipment in 

combination with headlamps with xenon bulbs in accordance with ECE R48. 

A complete cleaning system consists of the following components: 

• Whirl chamber nozzles with different water distributions – in stationary 

or telescopic nozzle systems 

• Switching valve, low loss, pressure or path controlled 

• Hose assembly with Hella snap-on system 

• Water reservoir with centrifugal pump 

• Control: electronic timer or relay 

Selection and positioning of the nozzles is optimized by our specialists 

specifically for each vehicle in terms of styling and cleaning quality. This 

is accomplished with the aid of computer supported simulation and verifying 

cleaning tests in the laboratory. Use of a highly standardized “modular 

headlamp cleaning system” and consideration of the specific requirements 

of headlamps and motor vehicles allow us to work out optimized solutions 

for nearly all applications in terms of function, design and costs. 

Telescopic nozzle systems with aluminum or plastic cylinders are now available 

for weight reduction. 

The integration of laser welding in the production process has opened up new 

possibilities for development engineers in designing functional assemblies. 

For example, new distribution elements ensure an even lower pressure loss 

while requiring significantly reduced space.

Optical systems 

Styling 


The purpose of the optical system in a headlamp is to catch the greatest 

possible percentage of the luminous flux (light quantity) output from the light 

source, shape the light beam and focus it in the areas required by the driver 

within the scope of the legal regulations: 

Hella uses its own software for calculating the optical systems allowing 

design engineers comparative evaluation of alternative solutions. The results 

of this simulation contribute to finding the best concept in terms of installation 

space, cost target and design. 

The following basic differences exist: 

• Paraboloid reflectors 

The light source is positioned in the vicinity of the focal point. The resulting 

beam of projected light is virtually parallel. The light is distributed by optical 

elements in the cover lens. 

•Free-form reflectors 

With this reflector concept, each area of the surface of the reflector is 

allocated a certain area of the road to illuminate. The surface of the reflector 

is calculated on the basis of the so-called deflection strategies with the 

aid of a computer. This results in a so-called “free form” (FF ® 

) instead of 

a regular shape. The calculation software “Helios” developed by Hella is 

being advanced continuously for new FF ® 

concepts. 

•Projector-type systems 

In such systems, the reflector uses a free form system (FF ® 

) instead of 

regular geometry. It collects the light produced by the light source in the 

vicinity of a primary focal plane. The light is projected into a secondary 

focal plane containing a shield. The contour of the shield is projected onto 

the road by a lens. 

Particularly the selection of the optical system has a major influence on the 

appearance of a headlamp and the overall vehicle front end. With its own 

stylists, Hella supports implementation of the light engineering selected to 

provide a custom styling to match the vehicle family.

Current auxiliary subjects 



Pattern-free lenses, new light sources and visible technology are only a 

few aspects making important design decisions necessary during the initial 

development phase. Frequently, graphic support is required. Hella has 

special tools for such requirements.

If required, Hella design engineers cooperate with vehicle manufacturers in 

developing show cars for exhibitions. These preliminary developments provide 

a preview of new technologies and their appearance for consumers and

The research and basic development sector is frequently incorporated 

particularly in such projects. In addition to new and further developments 

of optical systems, special departments also provide know-how on subjects 

such as 

• Styling-oriented adaptation of optical systems 

• Surface effects on visible components 

• Special design materials 

• Use of residual light for signature light 

• Pedestrian protection 

• Night vision 

and for many other general and customer-specific matters.

Continuous further development of projection systems at Hella has led to 

an extensible series of individual modules. Using standardized interfaces for 

headlamps, every customer can come as close to his own lighting strategy 

as the cost and installation space limits of the specific project allow. Even 

within a headlamp series, significant differentiation is possible with advanced 

planning which then also allows realization at high quality with minimum lead 

time without changing the overall concept of the headlamp. 

Control units with software adaptable to any vehicle model, which 

communicate with the vehicle data bus, provide the system with infinite 

possibilities for adaptation.

Bi-Xenon ® 

systems use one Xenon light source to create both the low and 

high beams. The world’s first standard series applications for dynamic bend 

lighting were realized by Hella using swiveling Bi-Xenon ® 

modules. 

Bend lighting is another step toward adaptive front lighting. An additional light 

source is switched on by signals from the vehicle data bus when the vehicle 

turns.

A bi-halogen module is new in the Hella module family. For the first time, 

it offers halogen low beam light and halogen high beam light together using 

one single projection module, making this space-saving technology available 

for halogen headlamps as well. 

In combination with Hella swiveling frames, they can also be used in AFS 

systems for dynamic bend lighting on a halogen basis. 

Anticipated changes in legal regulations will probably allow the introduction 

of the VARIOX ® 

module as standard equipment as of 2006. The cut-off line 

here is produced by a rotating cylinder. Initially, four different light distributions 

are planned for the dipped beam, which will be switched automatically 

depending on the traffic situation. 

• Town light

Manual switchover is only required for the integrated

This module is also available as a swiveling version. Switchover thresholds in the

At Hella, technical solutions for realization on an LED basis are available for all 

signal functions in the headlamps in addition to filament bulb versions. The first 

products for side marker lamps, position lamps and daytime running lamps are 

already or in the near future on the market. The main light functions are the next 

current challenge. 

The use of LED technology offers many advantages in comparison to 

conventional light sources: 

• Extremely long service life (> 10,000 h) 

• Small dimensions 

• Reduced installation depths for the entire system 

• Very short reaction time 

• “Cold” light (white) 

• New design possibilities; complex, variable arrangement of light emitting 

surfaces possible 

• Light color similar to daylight 

• Energy efficiency improved in comparison to halogen light 

On the development side, we still face the following challenges: 

• Temperature management (heat is not carried off with the light beam and 

must be dissipated separately) 

• Comparatively low luminance (radiant intensity per unit area) 

• High system costs at present 

Hella has accepted these challenges and is cooperating with leading LED 

manufacturers. With our cooperation partner Stanley, we are influencing the 

development of LED versions suitable for automotive applications. At the 

same time, the required mounting and connection technologies, as well as 

optical and cooling systems for LED are being developed. Comprehensive 

competency is also available at Hella for the electronic controls. We are 

therefore completely prepared for the impending innovations in the field 

of LED headlamps.

This combination of LED and light conductor rod shows a design idea, 

which was only capable of realization in mass production by combining 

comprehensive know-how. 

Position light 

Clearly visible light conductor rods arranged in a striking shape distinguish 

a new family appearance. Following initial applications with conventional 

filament bulbs, this light conductor system is now also available as a 

standard feature with LEDs to match the light color of Xenon headlamps. 


This application with deflectors is still a prototype at the moment. A 3D 

appearance is achieved within a luminous strip with relatively low effort. 

Free-form surfaces or surfaces with facets can be used as required. The 

technology shown here can also be used for position light and daytime 

running light. 

Daytime running light 

This prototype shows one of may design options for daytime running lights. 

It is possible to switch from the daytime running light function to the position 

light function, while maintaining the same light colour. 

Front fog lamp 

The realization of the fog lamp function is technically already possible today, 

using 6 to 8 high power LED’s. In terms of the optics, different systems such 

as re-directing reflectors or Kartovals can be used. 

Headlamp 

The output of the LED low beam headlamps technically realizable today is 

comparable to that of a halogen system. A number of modules are required, 

the optical systems of which necessitate large dimensions to achieve the 

high intensities required for the road. 

In the future, matrices with a large number of LED chips will be available. 

This will then also allow AFS systems to be realized without mechatronic 

elements. Light areas will then simply be switched on or off automatically 

as required.

How many side marker lamps (SML’s) are approved? 

SML’s are permissible on all passenger cars with a maximum 

length up to 6 m. We recommend one lamp at the front and one 

at the rear on each side. 

Where can SML’s be mounted on passenger cars? 

When mounting, observe the following: 

Attachment height: At least 25 cm, max. 150 cm from the 

ground. 

Attachment location: max. 1 m from the rear end of the vehicle. 

Is mounting difficult? 

The detailed mounting instructions and mounting template 

included makes mounting easy even for do-it-yourself drivers: 

Naturally, you can also have them mounted at your garage. 

What do SML’s provide? 

With the new LED-SML’s you obtain greater safety at dusk and

Why LED’s? 

Heavy duty LED’s have a longer service life than incandescent 

bulbs (> 10,000 hours), allow a flat, compact design and provide 

a uniform, unmistakable signal pattern for years without a reduction 

in the output. Moreover, LED’s are distinguished by their 

extremely low power consumption (0.7 W). 

Is it permissible to retrofit additional SML’s 

at the front of the vehicle if the vehicle is already equipped 

with a rear spoiler with SML’s? 

Naturally! For such applications, we offer single lamps. You can 

retrofit additional SML’s at the front of the vehicle. 

Here, a maximum of 2 lamps per vehicle side also applies. 

How are the SML’s switched? 

Automatically with the headlamp switch when the parking lamps 

or headlamps are switched on. This makes installation of an 

additional switch unnecessary.
