Welcome to SPE’s new Enewsletter!
SPE continues to move into more facile and green communications
methods and to say goodbye to tree-eating, cost-heavy
printed material. SPE’s board approved a transition to convert
SPE’s member newsletter into a digital format, one that now
comes to members in full color with embedded links to exciting
and relevant topics and resources.
The national office is excited to bring you what we hope you
will discover is a much more dynamic and useful product. This
is a one-year pilot approach for the new newsletter format. We
will check in with you periodically to determine member satisfaction,
and strongly encourage you to weigh in with us at any
time. It is our sincere hope that SPE members share our excitement
about getting something “cool, new, and fresh” in favor of
the black and white printed newsletter that repeats much of the
information we have already on our website.

Chicago is the destination for SPE’s 2013 National Conference, Conferring
Significance: Celebrating Photography’s Continuum, where we will celebrate
the 50th Anniversary of SPE! Fifty years ago, The Society for Photographic
Education’s founders held their first conference in Chicago, so it’s fitting to
return to the place where they first made contact to celebrate photography,
teaching and SPE.
We invite you to join us in Chicago, March 7-10, 2013, to celebrate and
participate in the exceptional programming that will examine how concentration
on a subject has allowed image, concept, criticism, teaching and learning to
shape the past, present and future of photography, its instruction and SPE itself!

Conference Ticket Price Breaks
in the Works
We are already very busy getting organized for SPE’s
50th anniversary national conference next March
in Chicago! Some of you may recall that we experienced
a sellout for the 2012 conference in San Francisco.
We have been seeing increasing numbers for
conference attendance over the past several years,
and anticipate high numbers for Chicago. We can
only sell as many tickets as space will allow. We are
working on a new price structure to encourage early
registration and avoid the last-minute sellout rush.
People who register earlier will get better pricing. Stay
tuned for more information as registration opening in
November gets closer.
Let’s Talk About Board Elections
SPE’s national board is the single most important
governing body of the organization. We all rely on the
board for vision, oversight, creativity and inspiration,
and they provide it over and over in spades. Yet every
year we see such a small percentage of the membership
participating in the election of individuals willing
to serve the organization for a four-year term.
The nominating process is thoughtfully crafted and
carefully tended to include all aspects of the membership,
and to thoroughly interview potential candidates
for the slate of nominees. This rigorous process has
produced a board that according to ethnicity and
gender data in SPE member profiles, represents the
membership fairly.
Even with the advent of online voting, we have experienced
low SPE voter turnout for board elections.
This is a national election year…let’s GET OUT THE
VOTE for SPE’s board elections as well as national
elections. Take a moment to read through the slate
of candidates that will be mailed to you and posted
on SPE’s website. There are eight very qualified,
dedicated individuals of various backgrounds and
interests who have agreed to run from all around the
country. Cast your vote for the four you would like to
have representing your SPE interests!
New Annual Report to Replace
Membership Directory
Since SPE’s membership directory went “live” online
at www.spenational.org, the most current info about
membership is at everyone’s fingertips, including
the member gallery where members’ work can be
posted in up to six portfolios. The need to print and
mail a cumbersome printed membership directory
no longer exists. It’s always available online! In print,
much of the info can be out of date by the time it hits
members’ mailboxes. We will instead move towards
producing an annual report for members that will give
a snapshot of SPE’s programming activities, new initiatives
and fiscal data. Details are still being worked
out about the timing and exact content of this new
publication, but we look forward to providing relevant
information to members in the new publication as
well as ongoing availability of the online membership
directory.
SPE goes abroad
Through an evolving relationship with WPO, SPE participated
in Sony World Photo in London in April. We
assisted by jurying the Student Focus Competition,
reviewing student portfolios from around the world,
and leading a forum discussion for international
photo educators and their students. It was a stimulating
symbiotic exchange, and we have some new
international members and contracts as a result. SPE
will also participate in WPO/Photokina by reviewing
portfolios and leading a forum for photo educators.
True to SPE’s strategic plan, we are making efforts to
be more inclusive and do international outreach to
position SPE in the global arena.
Plans are progressing well for the
2013 conference in Chicago
As I write this, the conference committee is in the
critical process of selecting from proposals for the
general sessions after the peer review ranking. The
171 proposals we received show continued high
level of membership engagement in this important
piece of SPE’s annual programming. Chicago will be
a great destination for SPE’s 50th anniversary celebration,
and during a recent planning visit with chair
Jeff Curto, we learned more about what the windy
city has to offer SPE members attending next year’s
event. Museum and galleries within walking distance,
a thriving photo and education community and significant
photo history that reflects SPE’s history so well
will all strongly enhance the SPE conference experience.
The Palmer House Hilton is very special and
a perfect setting for a golden anniversary. The SPE
room rate for which we negotiated is a total bargain
for this hotel.
Green Light for Baltimore in 2014
Everyone should mark their calendars for the 2014
conference in Baltimore March 6-9, 2014, at the beautiful
Hilton Baltimore, in the harbor area overlooking
Camden Yards. National Board member Nate Larson
has signed on to chair the conference, and the Maryland
Institute College of Art is generously serving as
the Host Institution Sponsor, so it promises to be a terrific
event with lots of collaboration with the Baltimore
and SPE communities.
Portfolio Sharing at SPE’s HQ
SPE enjoyed collaboration with the Cleveland Museum
of Art’s Friends of Photography Group and hosted
regional students shared presentations of their work
with local photography educators and professionals
as well as collectors. It was an informal but rich evening
with innovative work shared with a curious and
challenging group. We hope to work together with
CMA and other local organizations on other collaborative
efforts (think artist talks, SPE exhibitions, onsite
portfolio reviews!) as part of SPE’s current strategic
plan.

SPE Board Elections 2013–2017 Term
The SPE Nominating Committee has created the
initial slate of eight candidates for election to the
national board of directors this fall. The bios and
statements for all eight candidates are posted
on the SPE website.

SPE LGBTQ Caucus
SPE welcomes the addition of the LGBTQ Caucus,
organized by SPE Midwest member, David
Martin. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender,
and Queer (LGBTQ) Caucus within SPE exists to
provide a safe and progressive environment for
LGBTQ image makers and educators. The caucus
strives to strengthen the position of all LGBTQ
people and to help create, develop, and support
the current and next generations of LGBTQ artists
and art educators.

The SPE Art Sinsabaugh Creative Artist
Project Support Grant
We are pleased to announce Sylvia de Swaan as
the recipient of the inaugural SPE Art Sinsabaugh
Creative Artist Project Support Grant. The $5,000
SPE professional award is a new opportunity funded
by an anonymous donor and is currently in its
pilot year.

Congratulations to Sylvia de Swaan, recipient of
the SPE Creative Artist Project Support Grant. Sylvia’s
poignant work is a sequel to an earlier project
of her travels through post-Communist Eastern
Europe exploring themes of personal and collective
memory and identity. For this project, she
will venture to Czernowitz, the city where she was
born, exploring the cultural history of the Jewish
community where more than half of its Jews perished
by the end of WWII. Sylvia’s work will consist
of a series of symbolic portraits of the survivors,
placing them in the context of their past.
The results of the funded project will be presented
at the 2014 national conference in Baltimore.

Industry & Education Roundtable:
What would a successful and
collaborative future look like for
educators and manufacturers?
The Industry & Education Forum, an annual feature
of the SPE National Conference, serves as a dialog
between photo industry professionals and the education
community. This year’s event will feature a
moderated roundtable discussion that will include
more people, more diversity, and address some
emerging issues in education, photography and
technology.
We plan to discuss our programs’ and our student’s
needs for more useful advice regarding the
purchase of supplies and equipment for courses
and careers, while manufacturers are searching
for new strategies to more effectively engage the
educational market.
FUTUrE FOCUS: SPE’s 50th Anniversary Campaign
Planning is currently under way for SPE’s 50th Anniversary Campaign. The campaign
will officially launch in 2013 as part of our 50th Anniversary celebration at the 2013
conference in Chicago. There will be a number of ways for all members to engage in
the Anniversary celebrations and to support the campaign. The goal for the campaign
is $150,000 and the funds raised will support a number of initiatives that are critical to
accomplishing the goals of SPE’s strategic plan.

in their impact and influence. We now have the opportunity to celebrate the
past while securing the future by contributing to this campaign and ensuring that SPE
continues to be a catalyst in photographic education, art and scholarship.” Nancy Stuart,

honorary co-chairs. The combined
leadership of Stuart and the Lyons will
bring new and exciting ways to support
SPE. The campaign is designed to both
honor our heritage and to expand our

to its members’ growth as imagemakers,
educators, students and administrators.

SPE founding member, John Wood, 90, passed
away on July 20, 2012 in Ithaca, NY. He spent his
last weeks enjoying his family, the birds, moonlight
and fireflies, music and art in his beautiful studio.

This award commemorates the life and work of
Art Sinsabaugh, his participation as a founding

and artist passed away on September 3 from cancer.
Susan was ASMP’s Education Director and in
that role coordinated a variety of industry seminars
presented each year at the SPE National Conference.
ASMP has established The Susan Carr
Educators Award to be presented in the Spring of
2013 and annually thereafter.

SPE’s Northeast conference commemorates the 50th
anniversary of the 1962 Teacher’s Conference that led to
the founding of SPE. The field looks very different today
after the photo boom of the 1970s and the multitude of
images coming out of the digital revolution. The 2012
conference will look back at the 1962 event, how the field
has expanded since then, and what it will look like in the
future by presenting the perspectives of photographers,
curators, historians, archivists, and publishers who have
found unique ways of expanding the field of photography
as well as managing the overabundance of images in
the world. Conference events will include lectures, panel
discussions, portfolio reviews and multiple exhibitions.

A Path Home: Visualizing Trauma and Healing

The 2012 SPE Mid-Atlantic Conference will examine how
photographers are visualizing the aftermath of trauma.
Recent projects by artists have challenged the typical
representations of war trauma with work that is more
nuanced and challenges the way we view the after-effects
of war. It visits both the everyday realities and the interior
nightmares of war veterans as well as the repercussions
for the families at home. The photographers depict the
new front on the home front and what happens when the
war comes home. The conference will embrace a wide
reckoning, from the mass casualties of warfare to the tiny
atrocities of individual lives.

Taking its lead from the theories surrounding the Mayan
calendar, the Southeast SPE Regional Conference will
explore “The End of the World.” Human beings have the
capacity to contribute to this outcome as individuals and

aspects of the equation, but the positive efforts made
every day to avert disaster.

The courage to explore personal vision is what every
photographer needs to be successful throughout his or
her career. This conference calls upon photographers
who challenge the norm in their approach to lens-based
media. For educators it is critical to examine important
factors in designing programs in photography, and to
encourage students to take creative risks as they expand
personal perspectives in their work. It will start on Thursday
with a Student Volunteer Workshop followed by two
days of lectures, panels and workshops. We conclude on
Sunday with individual professional and student portfolio
reviews with regional curators.

The Art Academy of Cincinnati is pleased to host the
2012 Midwest Regional Conference. Continuum will focus
not only on traditional conference sessions, but viewing
exhibitions. Artist talks, panels, lectures, and workshops
will be offered during the mornings. In the afternoons and
evenings, participants will tour over 20 exhibitions of international
and regional artists (transportation included). This
year’s conference will be held in part with FOTOFOCUS, a
month-long celebration of photography in Cincinnati. The
entire city will be bursting with photography shows that
celebrate the past, present, and future of image-making.

The conference will examine how delusion, an idiosyncratic
belief that is firmly maintained despite being contradicted
by what is generally accepted as reality, can influence
how we produce, interpret and/or consume photography.
The Keynote speaker is Phil Toledano, whose work, A
New Kind of Beauty was the inspiration for the conference
theme. The Featured Speaker is Aline Smithson, photographer
and editor of the photography blog, Lenscratch.
The primary locations for the conference are the Center
for Fine Art Photography and the Northwest Aztlan
Community Center in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Ft. Collins is
famous for its galleries, music venues, restaurants, and
micro breweries in the adjacent Old Town area.

Ten SPE Awards are offered and feature a $500 travel stipend to attend the national conference.
THE SPE AWARD FOR INNOVATIONS IN IMAGING in honor of Jeannie Pearce
The SPE Award for Innovations in Imaging, in honor of Jeannie Pearce is open to all eligible
students working primarily with digital technology and is designated for work only possible
because of emerging digital technologies—no alternative processes or gelatin silver prints.
A project description describing how the work is possible as a result of emerging digital
technologies is required as part of the submission process. Jurors will seek to award work that
demonstrates the most innovative, unique, and freshest uses of digital technologies.
All SPE Student Scholarships come with a complimentary one-year membership and national
conference fee waiver.

SPE Women’s Caucus Film Festival – The SPE Women’s
Film Festival has featured innovative and provocative short
documentaries, animation and fiction by women directors
since 1995. The festival will be screened in Chicago,
March 7-10, 2013, at the Society for Photographic
Education 2013 Conference.

Artist-in-Residence Program at Light Work – Each year
Light Work invites 12-15 artists working in photography
and related media to participate in its residency program,
including one artist co-sponsored by Autograph ABP.
Over 360 artists have participated in Light Work’s Artist-in-
Residence Program, and many of them have gone on to
achieve international acclaim.
Deadline: December 31, 2012, each year
