Your Getting Started Guide
Congratulations, you’re engaged! Now what? Knowing where
to begin your big day planning can be an overwhelming
thought. Follow this simple five-step guide and the rest will be
smooth sailing.
1. Set your budget
Your budget is the most important planning
factor. Knowing what you’ve got to work with will
allow you to determine what big day elements
are most important to you and how much you can
afford to spend without breaking the bank. Sit
down with your partner and decide on a budget
that you are both comfortable with.
2. Save the date
Most reception venues tend to book up quickly,
so the sooner you decide on a time and date the
more likely you are of getting the one you want.
Consider what season and day of the week you
wish to celebrate your nuptials and start looking at
venues accordingly. Other planning elements such
as booking florists and caterers will be much easier
to organise once you have a date and venue to go
off. Once you have these factors locked in send
out your save-the-date cards, the more notice your
guests have the better, especially those required to
travel inter-state or from overseas.
3. Guest list
Although this may be one of the more difficult
and intimidating aspects of your planning, it’s also
one of the most important. Most factors such as
catering, decorations, invitations and bonbonniere
are dependent on your guest numbers.
4. Style guide
Having a clear theme to work towards will make
your big day planning a lot less confusing. Having
your own style will enable you to choose your
flowers, cake, stationery and gown accordingly.
Think of a theme that is a unique representation of
you and your partner.
5. Best dreSSed
Your wedding gown is one of the most important
elements of your day. Finding ‘the one’ can be
a time consuming task with fittings, alterations
and accessorising. Get the ball rolling as soon as
possible by setting appointments the moment
you’ve found your favourite designer. Keep an
open mind at your initial appointment and listen
to your designer’s advice, they are the experts
and will know what styles flatter your shape. It
can often be hard to determine how well a dress
will translate from a hanger to your body, so try
on their suggestions even if it isn’t something you
would normally go for, you may be surprised. Don’t
purchase a dress a size too small hoping you will
fit into it on the big day, remember that a dress
can easily be taken in but they can’t be expanded,
you want the dress to fit you not the other
way around.
Happy planning!

Planning Your Ceremony
YOUR GUIDE TO SAYING “I DO”.
CHURCH WEDDING
Depending on your religious beliefs a religious
ceremony tends to be performed in a place of
worship, such as a church or temple. Most faiths
are bound by a traditional structure and impose
certain rules, it’s important to familiarise yourself
with these before saying your “I do’s”. For example
some religions allow inter-faith marriages, whilst
some don’t, others have requirements about the
upbringing of children and some insist on premarital
counselling. These types of requirements
can take months so it’s important to consult your
relevant clergy member as soon as possible after
your engagement.
CIVIL CEREMONY
For couples not bound by religion or who wish to
embrace a less traditional approach a civil ceremony
is the common choice. Civil ceremonies are not
influenced by religious beliefs and can be performed
just about anywhere, the only requirement being
you publicly exchange vows. You also have the
freedom to customise your ceremony from scratch
to make it unique and meaningful to you as a couple.
THE REGISTRY OFFICE
Holding your nuptials at the registry office can
be as formal or informal as you like. The bride is
free to wear a wedding gown and have bridesmaids,
and a registry office can hold up to 30 guests. Like
most venues Saturday is usually the busiest day,
whilst days like Valentine’s Day can be booked well
in advance. Contact your local Registry of Births,
Deaths and Marriages for more information.
THE CELEBRANT
Who you choose as your celebrant will be
dependent on whether you have religious, civil
or inter-faith ceremony. If you’re opting for a civil
ceremony you’ll need to appoint your own celebrant
to officiate the marriage, whilst if you’re planning on
a religious ceremony your officiant may be limited
by your choice of venue. It’s important whoever you
choose you feel comfortable with, each celebrant
has a different style and approach so it’s important
theirs is right for you. Civil celebrants are usually
chosen based on recommendation but you can
also reference the Australian Federation of Civil
Celebrants, www.civilcelebrants.com.au
VOWS
If you’re planning on writing your own vows, it’s
important you start planning them at least a month
in advance. Consider whether you’ll write them
together or separately, and if it’s the latter think
about whether you’ll share them before hand or
whether you’ll leave it as a surprise. Upon putting
pen to paper reflect on how you fell in love, special
moments and memories, what you love about each
other and your hopes and promises for the future. If
either of you has children you may want to include a
vow to honour and love them as well.

The Venue Checklist
YOUR CEREMONY AND RECEPTION VENUES ARE VITAL INGREDIENTS TO THE
SUCCESS OF YOUR BIG DAY. HERE IS THE ULTIMATE VENUE GUIDE TO ENSURE
YOU FIND THE PERFECT DESTINATION FOR ‘I DO’.
Your venue locations are likely to be at the top
of your big day decision-making list. Although
you might think you’ve already got it sorted, it’s
important you consider the following factors before
signing the dotted line.
CEREMONY CHECKLIST
B Is the venue available on your chosen date?
B Who will marry you? Depending whether you opt
for a religious or civil ceremony you will need to
meet with the relevant officiant to discuss the
details i.e. price, dress code, vows etc.
B How many guests can be accommodated?
B Can you provide your own music?
B Can you decorate the site (flowers etc)?
B Can guests throw rose petals or confetti?
B Is there a room for the groom to prepare in?
B Are there time restrictions?
B Is the location easily accessible by public transport
and/or is there adequate parking facilities?
RECEPTION CHECKLIST
B Is the venue available on your chosen date?
B Will the venue cater for the size of your wedding?
B Does the quoted price suit your proposed budget?
B Do they have an in house caterer and can
you personally design a menu suited to
your requirements?
B Does the venue have a liquor license?
B Will the venue allow you to provide your
own alcohol?
B
B
B
B
B
How much is the deposit and do they have a
payment schedule?
Is there accommodation available and if not are
there suitable accommodation options near by?
Is there adequate guest parking facilities?
Is there a dance floor or another open area for
dancing and or entertainment?
Are there time constraints?
TIPS
• Before heading out on your venue
search have a clear idea of your
concept, style, guest numbers
and budget.
• Get a detailed costing package,
outlining exactly what is included. This
will prevent you from getting hit with
any hidden costs.
• Be sure to get everything in writing,
including their cancellation policy and
ensure everything discussed and agreed
upon is detailed in the contract.
Remember to ask as many questions as you need
to help you decide. With these important pointers in
mind, you’ll be on your way to securing your dream
destination for ‘I do’.

Engagement &
Wedding Ring Guide
YOUR ENGAGEMENT AND WEDDING RINGS WILL STAY WITH YOU FOR THE
REST OF YOUR LIFE, SO CHOOSING SOMETHING THAT YOU LOVE AND CHERISH
IS AN IMPORTANT DECISION. THERE ARE A MYRIAD OF STYLES AND MATERIALS
AVAILABLE, SO WHAT WILL SUIT YOU BEST? HERE IS A QUICK GUIDE TO HELP
YOU ON YOUR QUEST FOR THE PERFECT RING.
MATCHING SETS
Generally, your wedding band should match your
engagement ring, as more often than not they will
be worn together on the same finger. There’s also
the option of matching your wedding ring with your
partner’s for a romantic touch.
DESIGN DECISIONS
Brides-to-be should consider the engagement ring
shape so that the wedding band will complement
it. Designs of wedding rings are diverse and varied.
Whether you like classic or fancy shape diamond
rings, there is a full range of wedding rings to suit
you. Comfort is also important so it is advisable to
choose the right fit, which is not too tight and not
too loose.
WEAR AND CARE
No matter what metal you have chosen for your
wedding ring, it can damage or tarnish over time. Look
after your rings by removing them when doing chores
or playing sport. Cleaning agents and cosmetics can
dull its appearance so maintain your rings shine by
having it cleaned regularly by a professional.
BEFORE BUYING YOUR RING
Your wedding ring carries a lot of significance and
is one of the most emotionally significant moments
during your wedding planning experience. As
symbols of your eternal commitment to each other,
your wedding rings hold grave importance as part of
your ceremony. Time should be taken to choose your
rings carefully, ensuring they align with your style and
budget as a couple.
METAL CHOICES
There are so many options for wedding rings.
Whether it is in 18kt white, yellow or pink gold,
platinum or even titanium, the choice is purely up
to you. A combination of different coloured gold or
white gold and titanium mixed together has been a
growing trend over the last few years. Particularly for
men, the array of designs means they can have a ring
as unique as their fiancées engagement ring.

Brad Bird Melbourne Jewellery
Catanach’s
Brad Bird’s designs and creations have been in
high demand from retailers and galleries throughout
Australia for the past 15 years. Often being referred
to as “Australia’s best CAD Jewellery Designer”.
An RMIT Jewellery Design Graduate with ‘old
school’ handcraft and technical training has been a
driving force behind Melbourne’s evolving industry.
Besides designing for other jewellers, Brad has
also been sought after privately to create one off
commission pieces.
After 15-years in the industry as a designer
and jeweller Brad decided to fuse his skills and
experience with his aesthetic vision and launch his
own jewellery brand.
“I wanted to be able to focus on selling my
own designs, to have the opportunity to push
the envelope and offer something that little bit
different,” says Brad.
His pieces are sculpturally crafted out of luxury
metals and the highest quality of stones, and are
available exclusively through his Melbourne studio.
Brad’s commitment to dreaming up unique designs
is never failing, and their elegant simplicity ensures
that the individual expression of each client is never
overshadowed but instead perfectly enhanced,
making each piece truly one-of-a-kind.
As the oldest family-owned jeweller in Australia,
Catanach’s has been designing and crafting
stunning jewellery for 35 years.
It’s a reputation to be proud of – and Catanach’s
builds that heritage into both its service delivery
and its wonderful range of jewellery.
Founded in 1874 by a young English diamond
setter, George William Catanach, Catanach’s is now
in its fifth generation – guided by the expertise of
Amanda and David Catanach.
“Catanach’s is famous for its antique pieces and
its fine diamonds,” says Amanda.
Catanach’s also deals in the finest Argyle
pink diamonds.
“The chance to work with these spectacular gems
is taken as an honour,” says Amanda. “Such is the
rarity of these stones that after cutting they are
sent out to worldwide tender,” she says. “We have
obtained some magnificent pink diamonds to meet
the increasing demand.”
When making a personal jewellery
purchase, Catanach’s takes into account your
individual requirements.
“My staff encourage clients to purchase
pieces that complement their existing
jewellery and, if required, we remake dated
pieces,” says Amanda. It’s all part of the
Catanach’s heritage.
Visiting the TISHÈ studio is a unique experience.
Principal Owner Anthony Bates jokes with his clients
when they arrive, “as you can see I work very
differently compared to other jewellery stores.”
Anthony continues, “I carry very little stock, other
than my master models. If money was tied up in
stock, then obviously it would be in the company’s
best interests to move it as fast as possible, but
that would be contrary to the clients best interests,
which is not what TISHÈ is about. I admit I was a
little concerned about this approach when we first
started, but soon discovered that none of my clients
or their referrals desire the ‘over the counter’ or
‘ready to go’ type jewellery. Every project starts with
a blank piece of paper and we work from there.
sault
“Indulge the senses amidst a romantic setting at the most exquisite property in Daylesford.”
As you enter the majestic estate, the long driveway lined by towering elms leads you to
the stunning fountain that once stood in the centre of a French town. The building is made
of sandstone, reminiscent of a grand old French home, flanked either side by beautifully
manicured gardens and acres of lavender.
The newly built barn has been constructed using recycled timbers and reworked into a
chapel that can seat up to 110 guests and provides an unforgettably idyllic ceremony venue
overlooking the lake.
The gardens can also provide a romantic setting for both your ceremony and the perfect
location for your wedding photos.
Sault Restaurant is set amongst the magnificent backdrop of wombat state forest. The
countryside sets the scene for a tranquil day which allows a sense of peace and calm to
envelop your guests.
Canapés and drinks can be enjoyed by your guests on the deck overlooking our very own
lake or on the rolling lawns that meet with row upon row of lavender. With 180-degree views
from all tables in the restaurant, guests can enjoy the culinary delights prepared by our head
chef using the freshest regional produce.
As the sun sets over the lake and the candle light softly glows, the dining room becomes a
wonderful place for the bride and groom to partake in the first dance.
The owners of Sault Restaurant were married at the beautiful estate so they understand the
importance of the day and can assist in the planning for you whether your guest list is 20 or 110.
