Zittel selects items from the museum’s holdings, which she integrates into an<br />
installation environment of her own design. Recognized for her innovative use<br />
of textiles over the past thirty years, and having set up a weaving workshop in<br />
her Joshua Tree studio, the artist has selected textiles and weavings from the<br />
modern and Native American collections, organizing them on the floor to create<br />

– Beauty in the Whispers<br />

The debate over left-brain vs. right brain is moot with<br />
Kathy Harmon-Luber. By day she is a successful grant<br />
writer, having raised more than $100 million for non-profit<br />
organizations advocating the arts, education, children,<br />
health/social services, and political change in Southern<br />
California and in Washington, DC. Most recently, Kathy<br />
was Director Institutional Development at Idyllwild Arts<br />
Foundation.<br />
By day Kathy is also an award-winning fine art photographer<br />
and artist. She was named the Art Alliance of Idyllwild’s<br />
2012 “Artist of the Year.” She has exhibited her work at<br />
galleries, museums and public venues both nationally and<br />
throughout California. Her work has been published in The<br />
Washington Post, Best of Photography Magazine and other<br />
publications.<br />
Her latest show, Dress: Whispers opens at Artspresso<br />
Gallery, in Idyllwild on <strong>June</strong> 27 and runs through the<br />
summer.<br />
“This series continues work that was created out of Earth<br />
Day 2009. I hung a clothesline between the pines. Late in<br />
the afternoon, I was removing the crisp white sheets from<br />
the line, when I noticed a golden light shining through<br />
the linen. The simple beauty captured my imagination. I<br />
began to find things to hang from the clothesline to capture<br />
that fleeting beauty. The first series, Laundry: Voyeur<br />
captured these rare moments of light and serenity. The<br />
images, created in the camera without filters or digital<br />
enhancement, had a dreamy, surreal quality. I was hooked.”<br />
In 2014 Kathy created the Venice: Whispers series. The<br />
photographs are double exposures with the hint, a whisper,<br />
of another image. “The secondary images give a hint of a<br />
story. The viewer is left to write the tale. Dress: Whispers<br />
continues this journey by capturing rare and fleeting<br />
moments of beauty. The images capture the shimmering<br />
light on a dress left to blow in the wind. The moment is<br />
saved for all time, but gone in the split second of reality.<br />
That ephemeral quality lends a poignancy to an ordinary<br />
scene,” continued Kathy.<br />
Kathy relies on what her camera captures. She makes use of<br />
the natural light – “I work with what nature has provided.<br />
Even the double exposures are done in the camera and not<br />
in Photoshop. To be true to the moment, I must be true<br />
to the eye, in this case the camera eye. In doing so I have<br />
created remarkable images of the imperfect, impermanent<br />
and transitory reality. I can sit for hours watching the<br />
reflections of light. This phenomenon is all around – every<br />
place in the world light will reflect. The images are serene<br />
or haunting but always are unique. The Dress: Whispers<br />
allows me to share my experience. But the viewers will<br />
always have their own interpretation, their own experience,<br />
of light and reflection. Reflection of the light and their own<br />
thoughts lends a very personal experience to my work. And<br />
being a part of that experience, is very humbling.”<br />

Palm Springs Chosen as Host Town to Special Olympians<br />
Palm Springs is honored to be a Host Town for the <strong>2015</strong> Special Olympics<br />
World Games, and we are deeply honored to be chosen to participate in<br />
the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg for the <strong>2015</strong> Special Olympics<br />
World Games.<br />

On May 14, <strong>2015</strong>, the “Flame of Hope,” the official torch for the Special<br />
Olympics World Games Los Angeles <strong>2015</strong>, was lit at the Sacred Site of<br />
Pnyx, opposite the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. This will formally began<br />
the journey to the World Games. In keeping with Olympic tradition and<br />
custom dating back to the Ancient Greeks, the torch was lit by the sun’s<br />
rays and will remain lit until the end of the Games on August 2, <strong>2015</strong>.<br />

PALM SPRINGS<br />
Over the course of 46 days, in a hand-to-hand exchange, over 20,000<br />
participants throughout the nation will be carrying the Special Olympics<br />
Flame of Hope across the country, helping to deliver the flame to Los<br />
Angeles for the Special Olympics World Games. The City of Palm Springs<br />
is honored to be a part of this amazing journey.<br />
On Saturday, <strong>July</strong> 18, <strong>2015</strong> Mayor Steve Pougnet, along with local law<br />
enforcement and Special Olympic Athlete Maria Brandt, will participate<br />
in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg, the last journey of the Flame<br />
of Hope throughout the State of California. The Flame of Hope will be<br />
carried to the Opening Ceremonies of the Special Olympic World Games<br />
in Los Angeles.<br />
The event will start at the Palm Canyon Theater parking lot on N. Palm<br />
Canyon Drive at 6:30 p.m. and will end at the Palm Springs Convention<br />
Center at 7:00 p.m. A community ceremony celebrating the Final Leg tradition,<br />
which will be open to the public, will be held at the Palm Springs<br />
Convention Center.<br />
The Flame of Hope will complete its journey on <strong>July</strong> 25th when the Law<br />
Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg team carries it into the Opening Ceremony<br />

Bill McCloud, 85 year-old to receive teaching<br />
credential at CSUSB Palm Desert Campus<br />
At age 85, Bill McCloud will become the oldest student to complete the<br />
requirements for a Designated Subjects California Teaching Credential this spring at<br />
Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus. He joins hundreds of other students<br />
who have completed the campus’s credential program over the past 10 years.<br />

McCloud, a resident of Banning, is currently employed as a radio programmer. He<br />
has his own talk show, “Grandpa Speaks” on KMET 1490, an ABC News affiliate,<br />
and prior to his present affiliation, he worked as a cameraman for the ABC network<br />
for more than 20 years, earning three Emmy Awards for his work in broadcasting.<br />
He was also a businessman. McCloud opened and ran a barbeque restaurant in<br />
Hollywood called Dab’s Barbeque, and for six years, catered to the studios as<br />
well as to the public.<br />
McCloud has a Ph.D. in metaphysical science and is the author of the book,<br />
“Setbacks…Create Comebacks: A Memoir.”<br />
In recognition of his completion of the academic requirements Vince and Michelle required Dziadyk for the and Rosanne and Dan Sirois<br />
Designated Subjects California Teaching Credential, McCloud will participate in<br />
the campus’s credential ceremony on <strong>June</strong> 11.<br />

The Coachella Valley has so many smart entrepenuers but Charissa Farley has Drive!<br />
Charissa Farley is a shining beacon of beauty, causing a stir of<br />
admiration wherever she goes. Her brilliant smile and charisma light up every<br />
space she enters. Lucky for all of us, her love is literally spread all throughout<br />
the Coachella Valley. Charissa is Southern California’s trusted concrete paving<br />
stone contractor and designer serving Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County,<br />
Santa Barbara and the Coachella Valley cities of Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La<br />
Quinta, Indio, Indian Wells, and Rancho Mirage since the 1970’s. It is fitting<br />
that the gifts of her advocation shall be traversed by us all.<br />
L: Charissa, where and how did you first get into a business like construction<br />
or paving? Can you tell me about that?<br />
C: We all end up where we end up, right? I had a plan. I thought that there<br />
would be opportunities found in fields where there were less women. So I was<br />
interested in investigating politics, the military, police officers, or construction.<br />
I didn’t think I was smart enough to be an engineer. I just thought there would<br />
be more opportunity in a field where there were less women. I regretted<br />
it later in life. Maybe I should have been a Playboy Bunny or something!<br />
(Laughter) That is the “why”. There were a lot of uphill struggles. At this point,<br />
twenty something years later, it’s not so bad.<br />
L: Yah, you conquered paving.<br />
C: I think that the favor has swung in my direction. There are the occasional<br />
stumbling blocks for being a female. They are far out-weighed by the<br />
advantages of being a female- but a qualified female. You know, I have<br />
worked very, very hard. And I always say , when training my own daughters,<br />
that we have to work a lot harder. We bring different things to the table. You<br />
can’t be a guy. Every woman has different skill sets and abilities. I’m not<br />
saying that there aren’t women in the field. There is still a void for women<br />
in the field. The reality is, usually for most women, it is not our highest and<br />
best calling. Our highest and best calling, whether we are men or women,<br />
shouldn’t be a gender based conversation. It should be for any of us, finding<br />
our own highest and best calling.<br />
L: Yes, that is how we get the best in everything; finding the best people.<br />
C: Right! It is what can you bring to the table? What can I bring to the table?<br />
And it became clear in the pavement industry that basically there was<br />
something I could bring to the table. The niche that I found was that I still<br />
have to surround myself with qualified men in the field. I am only as good as<br />
my men that I work with. Like a man is only as good as the wife he has behind<br />
him. I am only as good as the men behind me. What I bring to the table is<br />
technical confidence. I am the only woman in Southern California who is ICPI<br />
Certified as an Authorized Contractor Instructor for Advanced Residential<br />
Paver Technician. That is an inspiration. And my company, I think, is the only<br />
accredited company in Southern California. We are one of the larger firms in<br />
Southern California that specializes in interlocking pavers.<br />
L: Do ever do any design? Like designing the shape of the driveway?<br />
C: Oh yeah, that just goes with the territory. But we design and build for<br />
ourselves. I have designed hundreds for many manufacturers and I usually<br />
work with architects, engineers, municipal engineers, contractors--all of the<br />
above.<br />
L: I love how you match the color of the pavers so well with the house and the<br />
surroundings. It looks really natural.<br />
C: Well the challenge of the work is creating pavers that look indigenous; they<br />
are supposed to be there and that work with our region and our architecture.<br />
I have been known to take rocks off mountains behind Palm Springs near<br />
Smoke Tree Stables. I have taken rocks off of mountains of HWY 74. I have<br />
matched pavers to our local mountains. I have gone to the base of the Tram<br />
and picked color schemes that match the mountains there. I have taken color<br />
palettes and matched palm trees for housing communities. I try to make our<br />
product feel what it really is. There isn’t a stone set where the concrete is in<br />
some way artificial. People don’t know is that our products are made within<br />
300 miles using local dirt, local aggregate, we grind to match our natural<br />
features. It is much like they did in Old World Europe. The French took the<br />
rock dirt from the region and the clays from the region to build roads. We<br />
have been doing the same thing, using local dirt. We even now grind or<br />
shot blast to expose the natural aggregate in the pavers. So the result is a<br />
beautiful crafted driveway that is really the furthest thing from artificial.<br />
Now you will be seeing a change in our company. Everyone locally knows our<br />
brand. We are specialized in interlocking pavers, but we now are working<br />
Santa Barbara, San Diego, Irvine companies, Lego Land, track builders and<br />
commercial builders. We are WBE [WBE certification for women business<br />
owners]. We do governmental municipal work. Now what you see is after<br />
all these years and all my friends in Palm Springs, we have now changed the<br />
look of pavers to a more modern contemporary. And that has disseminated<br />
into our entire industry in California. The look of what I call Coachella meets<br />
Palm Springs contemporary, Palm Springs modern, Trina Turk....My vibe of<br />
living in the Desert has now become my favorite design style. I carry that<br />
with me to Santa Barbara, to Las Olas. We are known as being an eclectic<br />
mix of who we are; of Modernism, of Contemporary, of Mediterranean, of<br />
Spanish Revival, of Coachella! You know, that has all seamlessly blended<br />
into a vibe that is definitely representative of Farley Pavers. You know, you<br />
do what you love, and we love that. And we carry that vibe out. I have a<br />
Mediterranean house that I started remodeling recently and my girlfriend<br />
came into the house, she looked at my sofa and said, “Has your inner Gay<br />
man come out?” (mutual laughter)<br />
L: Do you have any interest in architecture or home design?<br />
C: Yes of course. I wanted to be an urban planner at one time.<br />
L: That’s what I was doing in college for a short while.<br />
C: But I ended up here. I wanted to design an entire city! But in a way, I get<br />
to now. I am working with the design team of downtown Palm Springs, and<br />
I’m sitting here looking at four by four mock ups of the parking lot. And<br />
what else could have a bigger impact on downtown? The palms, the flavor...<br />
If the design team likes my suggestions, I could be the star of downtown.<br />
Thousands of people may enjoy! It could be reflective of my tastes, my love,<br />
my joy! It’s real fun.<br />
I only hope that Charissa continues to grace us with her love. Carry on, dear<br />

Considered by many critics to be the greatest living<br />
actress, Meryl Streep has been nominated for the<br />

surfing and nudists....... Yes, you read right. Blacks Beach is San Diego’s nude<br />
beach where you can bare it all and tan a full body. Always remember your<br />
nude beach etiquette! 1.Respect boundaries. 2. Respect the people. 3. Respect<br />
the beach.<br />

Blacks Beach is two miles long and is situated at the base of majestic cliffs which<br />
reach up to 300 feet high. The most popular way down is the Torrey Pines<br />
Gliderport Trail but be very careful. These cliffs are not an easy way to go down.<br />
This is a lovely coastal hike through Manzanita and Chaparral as you look ahead<br />
to the stunning views of coastline and a great place to get a glimpse of Marine<br />
life...... (wink) Blacks Beach was named for the Black family who had a horse<br />
farm overlooking the beach.<br />
So if you want to lose the tan line, this is the place. Be sure to put extra<br />
sunscreen on those areas that don’t usually see the light of day. See you on the<br />

As the shows got bigger, so did the band’s ambition. Written during the<br />
2014 Take Me Downtown Tour, 747 — whose title rustles up the image<br />
of a fast-moving plane bound for bigger, better places — doubles as a<br />
metaphor for the group itself. After spending years at the top of the<br />
Country charts, Lady Antebellum is ready to pull up the wheels and<br />
climb even higher.<br />
“One of our favorite songs in the entire world is ‘I Can’t Make You Love<br />
Me’ by Bonnie Raitt,” she says. “It’s a perfect song that is incomparable.<br />
It puts you in this place and exudes this mood. I just listen to that<br />
song and I close my eyes and I see a movie in my head. [“Lie With Me”]<br />
did the same thing for me, in a different way. You’re listening to the lyrics<br />
and you can close your eyes and just see this whole scene play out.”<br />
It’s appropriate that 747 — an album about love, nostalgia, and the<br />
things that move us emotionally and physically — also contains several<br />
fast-paced anthems about transit. The first is “Long Stretch of Love,” an<br />
epic track that owes as much to rock ‘n’ roll’s raw swagger as Country’s<br />
rootsy twang. The last is “747,” a soaring title track built around the<br />
singers’ three-part harmonies. “This 747 can’t go fast enough,” goes<br />
the latter tune’s refrain, and while those lyrics technically refer to a<br />
heartsick man who’s flying back home to see his wife, they also paint<br />
the picture of a band that’s already skyrocketed to creative heights...<br />
but can’t help pushing down the throttle for a bit more speed.<br />
