ANNUAL REPORT

TAFELMUSIK BAROQUE ORCHESTRA 

& CHAMBER CHOIR 

Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, founded in 1979 and led by Music Director 

Jeanne Lamon since 1981, is “one of the top baroque orchestras, 

exemplary in every way” (Gramophone). The Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, 

under the direction of Ivars Taurins, was formed in 1981 to complement 

the Orchestra and enjoys an excellent reputation as a leader in its field. 

The orchestra performs more than 100 concerts each year, maintains a 

large 50-concert season at home in Toronto, performs with Toronto’s 

Opera Atelier, and tours extensively around the world to such places as 

the 13/14 season's tour destinations: Japan and South Korea, Carnegie 

Hall in New York City, BachFest Leipzig in Germany, Versailles, France with 

Opera Atelier, and cities across Ontario. The choir and orchestra’s multiplatform 

recording label Tafelmusik Media was launched in January 

2012, along with the Watch and Listen site, Tafelmusik‘s digital concert 

hall. Tafelmusik has a rich discography of more than 80 CDs recorded on 

the Sony Classical, CBC Records, Analekta and Tafelmusik Media labels. 

Since 1991, Tafelmusik has received nine JUNO Awards and a Grammy 

Award nomination. Tafelmusik is the Baroque Orchestra-in-Residence at 

the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto and operates its annual artist 

training programmes, Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute and 

Tafelmusik Winter Institute.

REPORT OF THE CHAIR 

Tafelmusik's vision is to be an international centre of 

musical excellence in period performance for generations to 

come. The 2012/13 season underscored and enhanced this 

vision with an impressive and exciting array of activities in 

our home performance season, and Tafelmusik proudly 

represented Toronto in Western Canada, a major American 

tour, Stratford Music, and throughout Ontario. The 

orchestra was also honoured to perform at the Lieutenant 

Governor’s Diamond Jubilee Gala where Jeanne Lamon was 

among the recipients of the Diamond Jubilee Medal. 

Tafelmusik also continued to launch its new multi-platform 

label, Tafelmusik Media, internationally. 

Jeanne Lamon let us know last year that in 2014, she will be 

stepping down as full time Music Director. Jeanne will 

continue on as Music Director Emerita, she will continue to 

direct some programmes with the orchestra and be very 

involved in the artist training programmes, and will be our 

artistic advisor until her successor is chosen. We are 

incredibly grateful for her over 3 decades of magnificent 

work as music director. 

The Board has formed a Search Committee and hired an 

international search consultant Margaret Genovese of 

Genovese, Vanderhoof and Associates, all who have been 

active in identifying music director candidates in Canada and 

around the world. Jeanne has set the bar high, and in so 

doing, will make the artistic leadership of Tafelmusik a 

coveted, sought-after position indeed. 

I sincerely thank our wonderful and active Board of 

Directors, Jeanne Lamon, the orchestra, Ivars Taurins and 

the choir, Tricia Baldwin and Tafelmusik staff, and our many 

volunteers for all of the accomplishments of this past season 

and for your hard and dedicated work.

Tafelmusik’s vision is to be a world class ensemble for many 

generations, and we have set ourselves on an excellent 

trajectory into the future. This year, we launched our $3MM 

renovation of our home venue Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre, 

Jeanne Lamon Hall in partnership with TSP. We have just 

completed the sanctuary renovation which came in on time 

and under budget, and will continue the renovations during 

the summers of 2014 and 2015. I would like to thank 

Managing Director Tricia Baldwin and her team for their 

excellent work in leading this project. Many thanks go to the 

Hon. Henry N.R. Jackman for his generous $1MM gift in 

honour of Jeanne Lamon, and we are all so appreciative of 

the generosity of our friends at TSP, our Board of Directors 

and many donors who made this remarkable transformation 

of our home possible.

The reports of Jeanne and Tricia will provide some brief 

highlights of the wonderful accomplishments on these 

fronts and on other initiatives.

Financial Health: A core responsibility of the Board is to 

ensure that the organization is financially sound. I am very 

pleased that Jeff Bennett will be reporting the thirteenth 

successive surplus season for Tafelmusik, and that the 

organization remains debt free. It has built its dedicated 

balance sheet funds for future artistic and strategic initiatives 

to over $800,000, created a financial cushion for challenging 

times, and built $4.4 MM endowment funds to ensure 

financial stability into the future. 

Fundraising and Sustainability: Tafelmusik's core artistic 

areas are in the home performance season, touring and 

recording, with additional activities in artist training, 

education and outreach. Given Tafelmusik's artistic 

leadership nationally and internationally, we are working on 

building sustainable models for increasing and maintaining 

international awareness, recording opportunities and tour 

funding in these important areas. 

To realize an expanding artistic and audience vision, 

Tafelmusik has been growing short and long term revenue 

capacity significantly to help offset financial challenges, and 

to facilitate the undertaking of artistic programming and 

initiatives. An increased focus on Tafelmusik's net capital 

asset base through increased earned revenue and annual and 

endowment fundraising will put Tafelmusik in a stronger 

position in the future and help us during these difficult 

economic times.

In May, almost 400 new and old friends of Tafelmusik 

gathered at the Carlu for Tafelmusik’s fourth joint gala with 

the University Health Network and the Artist Health Centre 

Foundation. It was a tremendous success, with $140,000 

raised in support of Tafelmusik's concert and education 

programmes. Special thanks are extended to gala sponsor 

Sun Life Financial, the gala committee, and our Board who 

sold so many tickets, our volunteers who helped with the 

event. A very special thanks of course to all who attended 

the event. 

Governance 

The Board has two primary oversight functions. The first is 

to ensure that the overall artistic and strategic direction of 

the organization is consistent with the organization’s mission 

and values, that there are sufficient resources for programs 

and activities, and that the organization’s assets are 

responsibly stewarded. In this regard, the board monitors 

plans for the future and provides guidance and support in 

major decision-making. The second oversight function is to 

hire and supervise the Music Director and the Managing 

Director, both of whom report to the Board. Jeanne Lamon 

provides the artistic leadership of Tafelmusik and is 

responsible for performance standards. She determines all 

repertoire, advising the Board regularly on artistic matters; 

selects all musicians and she performs community, 

fundraising and publicity functions. Jeanne plays an integral 

role in all aspects of planning: artistic, strategic and 

operational. We are indeed privileged to have Jeanne, who 

brings great artistic stature, leadership, vision and 

commitment, as our Music Director. Our Managing 

Director, Tricia Baldwin, is responsible for the overall 

management of the organization including planning, 

fundraising, government funding, advocacy, touring, 

recording, marketing and publicity, operations, and contract 

negotiations. Tricia’s tireless efforts on behalf of the 

organization, at home and on the road, are a key factor in 

our success. Tricia and her excellent staff team have 

consistently ensured and delivered balanced budgets, 

operating, capital and endowment revenue growth and a 

host of initiatives contributing to Tafelmusik’s long-term 

success and sustainability. Jeanne and Tricia work very 

closely together, and there is much co-operation and trust 

demonstrated in this relationship. 

The third primary role of the Board of an organization like 

Tafelmusik is to represent and promote the organization 

within the community at large; this includes specific 

responsibility for assisting in fundraising initiatives. Each 

director is a subscriber to Tafelmusik and makes an annual 

monetary contribution to the organization. The Board is 

actively involved in sponsorship and special event

fundraising, particularly the annual gala fundraiser and 

seasonal corporate sponsorship. Some directors also provide 

pro bono services to Tafelmusik when the circumstances 

permit. To help lead by example, members of the board 

have generously increased their annual gifts, and in 2012/13 

I am pleased to announce that the average board gift was 

approximately $6,000, with an additional average capital 

campaign gift of $25,000. 

Two members of the board are retiring at this meeting. We 

expect to continue with our efforts to add new directors 

who will strengthen the board in its core areas of need and 

diversify the organization’s range of contacts. 

Mary Turner is stepping down from Tafelmusik’s Board of 

Directors after many years of accomplished board 

membership. Mary’s love of music, wise approach and her 

action-orientation has always been appreciated. I would like 

to recognize the contributions of Mary, and know she 

remains a great fan of the orchestra. Luce Veilleux is also 

stepping down after her two-year term, and we look forward 

to continuing to build our friendship with Luce over the 

years. 

On a personal note, I would like to say what a pleasure it has 

been to serve as Board Chair, and to lead such a dedicated 

and active Board of Directors. I am a great believer in this 

organization and the world class talent of the musicians.

MESSAGE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR 

It is with much pleasure and pride that I share our artistic 

vision with our members and supporters. I feel we are at an 

all time high with the new projects and artistic collaborations 

we have been creating. 

Last season was a deeply personal one for me. Tafelmusik 

has been my musical home for over three decades, and after 

much reflection, I announced my decision to step down as 

full-time music director in 2014. It has been an honour and a 

privilege to have served in this role these past 30-plus years, 

and to work with such a fabulous orchestra and choir. There 

is such talent, commitment and integrity throughout 

Tafelmusik. I continue to be inspired by the amazing 

musicians around me and am proud of what we have 

achieved together. 

Of all my 32 years at Tafelmusik, we are experiencing now 

the highest level of commitment, good will, high morale, 

talent and creativity ever. The whole organization seems to 

be bursting at the seams with ideas, plans, enthusiasm and 

positive forward-thinking activity. This is true for orchestra, 

staff, choir and board alike. I am very optimistic about 

Tafelmusik’s future as one of great spirit and artistic 

opportunity. 

Jackman’s leadership and support has created a legacy that 

will help sustain Tafelmusik and the arts for many 

generations. 

We made a significant contribution to our discography with 

the recording and filming of Alison Mackay’s House of Dreams 

project. This original and fully-memorized programme was 

beautifully filmed by 90th Parallel Productions and we are 

grateful to Gordon Henderson and his team. We also 

furthered our dream to record all the Beethoven symphonies 

with our great friend Bruno Weil. This past season we 

recorded Beethoven’s fourth symphony and the Egmont 

and Coriolanus overtures for future release along with the 

September 2013 recordings of Symphonies 1 and 2. The 2- 

CD Handel Messiah recording was released, and I am sure 

that choir director and conductor Ivars Taurins is rightfully 

proud of this very fine recording.

I am very thrilled with what we accomplished with the 

renovations of our home venue. The acoustical results were 

stunning. The hall is like our instrument, and performing in 

the exquisite acoustics of our home venue is a pivotal point 

in the development of our artistic voice. I am so deeply 

honoured by Mr. Jackman’s generous gift to Tafelmusik, and 

am touched beyond words by his donation in my honour. 

He has been a great friend to Tafelmusik since our early 

days, and his belief in us has been steadfast as we have 

grown to international stature. He is a true philanthropist 

and visionary for the arts in Canada, and I know that Mr. 

It has been my dream to create the Tafelmusik International 

Baroque Academy. The first step was to expand into a 

winter institute. Building on ten years of success with the 

Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute, Tafelmusik expanded 

its artist training offerings to include a week-long specialized 

institute for advanced students and professional players of 

baroque string and continuo instruments. Nineteen talented 

young artists hailing from across Canada and the United 

States, England, and Israel were selected by audition from a 

pool of 55 international applicants. Tafelmusik’s Winter 

Institute provided an opportunity for in-depth study and 

training in aspects of specific repertoire. Our first Institute 

explored the Italian concerto grosso. It included orchestra 

rehearsals, sectionals, seminars, and masterclasses with 

Tafelmusik faculty members comprised of myself, Julia 

Wedman, Christina Mahler and Charlotte Nediger.

We ended the season triumphantly with the Tafelmusik 

Baroque Summer Institute and I am very grateful to 

Charlotte Nediger for her brilliant and caring work in 

coordinating the Institute. Every year, it seems that it is the 

best institute ever, and TBSI 2013 was no exception as the 

93 participants from all over the world were both talented 

and a delight to work with. 

Touring was very busy with major Western Canadian and 

USA tours of The Galileo Project and House of Dreams 

programmes respectively. We were delighted to perform at 

Stratford Music and a number of Ontario cities, and to be 

invited by Opera Atelier and Penn State University to 

perform The Magic Flute and our House of Dreams programme 

for enthusiastic audiences. 

We were very excited to perform with the Mark Morris 

Dance Group in our Luminato debut. Particularly moving 

was the educational partnership with MMDG, Seniors with 

Parkinson's and the enthusiastic students at Nelson Mandela 

Public School.

At the end of the season we said farewell to violist Elly 

Winer. Elly joined Tafelmusik in 1985, and has contributed 

immeasurably to our growth—musically, organizationally, 

and as a key member of the tight-knit family that is at the 

heart of Tafelmusik. He will be greatly missed by all of us 

and we look forward to his return visits. We also said 

farewell to long-time choir member Tannis Sprott, who 

was so much part of the heart and soul of the choir and 

contributed on so many levels. We wish her all the best. 

You might well wonder, where to from here? 

The ideas generated throughout the orchestra have been 

inspiring. Yes, we are ready for the next leap. It will involve 

new programming ideas with creative presentation formats 

and artistic collaborations, an expansion of our range of 

repertoire; an opportunity to hone the sound of the 

orchestra to reflect the acoustical upgrades to our home 

venue; the engagement and collaboration with top period 

performance directors and soloists from around the country 

and the world; further recordings and films; the exploration 

of new touring partnerships in different regions of the 

world; and our development of top Canadian talent with our

vision to intensively train the best young musicians with new 

and significant artist training programmes. I am especially 

interested in establishing artist training programmes for the 

top period performance talent, and will be investing much 

time to expanding this important and very moving 

investment in the next generation of musicians. 

We have always stayed true to our artistic mandate, and as 

we take the next big steps we will do so with vision and 

thoughtfulness, and with our eyes on excellence as we always 

have done. I feel very proud and privileged to lead this 

talented and committed group of musicians, and we are all 

excited about taking bold new steps. 

Thank you to Board Chair Andy Kenins for all that you have 

contributed to the well-being of Tafelmusik. We are very 

fortunate to have such an active board, who dedicate 

countless hours to Tafelmusik – all of which are very 

appreciated. On behalf of all the musicians, I thank all our 

supporters who make the world turn for Tafelmusik. 

And finally, I would like to thank our committed and hardworking 

staff. Under the inspired leadership of Tricia 

Baldwin, they work tirelessly to make our wild dreams come 

true here on earth. They, like our audience, Board of 

Directors and members, believe in us as artists and they, like

MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR 

Tafelmusik's vision is to be an international centre of 

musical excellence in period performance for many 

generations to come. To achieve this, Tafelmusik has 

engaged in tremendous growth that helps us create new 

audiences and develop excellent young Canadian and 

international musicians. 

Our firm foundation is built upon our most fundamental 

value: artistic excellence. Tafelmusik is one of the top 

ensembles of its kind that performs, tours, records, teaches, 

and reaches out to communities throughout Canada and 

around the world. The vision set forth is therefore taking the 

long view in terms of long-term vibrancy and sustainability, 

and Tafelmusik has diversified its activities with a 

tremendous sense of creativity and authenticity. The 

2012/13 season was no exception. 

I am happy to report at this AGM that we achieved our 13th 

successive balanced budget, while raising $2.6MM for the 

renovation of our home venue and achieving the highest 

ticket sales in our history. Since 2000, we have doubled 

operating revenues, increased the endowment from $312,000 

to $4.4 MM, eliminated Tafelmusik’s accumulated deficit, 

and created balance sheet funds of $800,000 for upcoming 

and long-term artistic and strategic initiatives. This has been 

done while significantly growing artistic activity as well as 

ensuring fair compensation levels for our excellent 

musicians. 

I have an incredible respect and admiration for our artistic 

team for dreaming big and accomplishing a lot here in 

Canada and throughout the world. It has been a complete 

privilege and pleasure to work and partner with our Music 

Director Jeanne Lamon who is a superb musician, a 

visionary and gifted artistic leader, and a kind, genuine and 

loyal friend with a wonderful sense of humour. Jeanne has 

taken Tafelmusik to international prominence, she continues 

to break new ground every day, and does so with a big and 

genuine heart. We look forward to celebrating Jeanne and 

her many accomplishments as the 2013/14 season is her 

final season as full-time music director. We are so happy she 

will continue to artistically guide Tafelmusik during the 

interim period before the new music director is engaged. As 

music director emerita, she will invest herself in the 

development of the next generation of period performance 

musicians with the formation of the Tafelmusik 

International Baroque Academy. Harpsichordist Charlotte 

Nediger continues to do brilliant and massive work behind 

the scenes with special mention of the outstanding work as 

Artistic Coordinator of our 2013 Tafelmusik Baroque 

Summer Institute. Principal Bassist Alison Mackay 

continued to make a profound contribution here in Toronto 

and around the world through her creation of programmes 

of such originality, depth and breadth. Her newest creation, 

House of Dreams, was recorded and filmed for the Tafelmusik 

Media label by 90 th Parallel Productions and toured 

throughout the USA. Ivars Taurins and the choir 

celebrated their high level of inspired performances 

throughout the season and have well-earned their reputation 

as one of the best in their field as demonstrated by the 

beautiful 2012/13 2-CD release of Handel’s Messiah on the 

Tafelmusik Media label. 

I admire my staff tremendously. They are people of good 

character, they are fair and respectful in their dealings with 

each other, they take responsibility for themselves and their 

actions, they are fun and share their delightful and quirky 

senses of humour, and they just plain care. Our staff team’s 

vision, enthusiasm, business acumen and results orientation 

in establishing and supporting opportunities at home and on 

the road were major factors in our success in 2012/13. I 

would like to thank Director of Marketing Alexandra 

Skoczylas for her thoughtful wisdom, insight and hard 

work, and to Alex and her wonderful marketing and box 

office team of Réjean Tremblay, Tim Crouch, Martin 

Reis and Derek Haukenfreres for bringing so many 

people into the world of Tafelmusik as audience members. 

With all Tafelmusik’s new initiatives and busy season 

activities, publicist Luisa Trisi guided us with tremendous 

wisdom. Thank you goes to our terrific Director of Artistic 

Administration and Operations Beth Anderson and her

Tafelscene, Tafelmusik’s programme for audiences 35 

and under, grew to new heights in 2012-13 through 

the introduction of Tafelscene events and other 

successful outreach activities. 

 

 

 

Tafelscene Membership is at its highest level ever!

multi-talented team for heroic, meticulous and highly 

professional work managing many projects and brilliantly 

organizing many tours while ensuring great relations with all 

our partners, We are thrilled that Talia Harrison-Marcassa 

and Caitlin Cross are joining her team, succeeding 

Stephanie Miletic and Emily Wall who did a terrific job 

last season. I’m sure that Director of Development Angela 

Nelson-Heesch, Michelle Yeung and Campaign Manager 

Fallon Butler are very proud of all that they accomplished 

with operating and capital fundraising this year. Carol 

Campbell continues to be an outstanding and caring 

volunteer manager nurturing the wonderful community 

around us. We are all grateful for the hard work of our 

accounting team John Hurst, Diann Missal and Heather 

Young. 

The 2013 renovation of our home venue is one of the largest 

contributions to the future development of our gifted 

orchestra and choir. We recently undertook Phase One 

renovations that included the installation of a new stage, 

floors and seats, increased seating for wheelchairs, and the 

painting of the sanctuary inspired by its original historical 

design. We are grateful for the work of E.R.A. Architects 

and Clifford Restoration. Acoustical improvements were 

designed by acclaimed acoustician Bob Essert, whose 

previous projects include the Four Seasons Centre for the 

Performing Arts and Koerner Hall at the Royal 

Conservatory. Tafelmusik’s deep roots in the Annex 

community are anchored in Trinity St. Paul's. This is a great 

success story about the collaboration between organizations 

from different sectors to create a much-loved and essential 

community space. 

We were so moved by the very generous gift of $1 MM by 

the Honourable Henry N.R. Jackman in Jeanne 

Lamon’s honour. How wonderful now to perform in the 

Jeanne Lamon Hall at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre! We are 

so grateful for the outstanding support of our Board of 

Directors and many individual donors, including major gifts 

from Tom Bogart and Kathy Tamaki, Scott and Ellen 

Hand and Trina and Don McQueen. The $500,000

“It's personally thrilling for me to see the beginning of renovations to our 

home venue. In the orchestra our greatest efforts are focused on providing 

our audiences with musical excellence, and it has always been my hope 

that we might also provide them with better acoustics and more comfortable 

surroundings to enhance the concert experience. The improvements to 

the acoustics at Trinity-St. Paul's Centre will make it even more of a pleasure 

to perform here in Toronto for the audience we love the most, our incredible 

home audience."

Spaces Canada programme was very appreciated. I thank 

our wonderful, hard-working Tafelmusik Board and staff 

for dedicating many hours of energy and care to the project. 

Through our collective efforts, we have restored this 

beautiful heritage building where worship and the arts are 

celebrated by thousands within our community. This 

revitalization project would not have been possible without 

the hard work and support of Trinity-St. Paul’s dedicated 

volunteers Bob Fugere and Lorna Niebergall, the staff, 

the church boards and the vibrant congregation. 

Tafelmusik’s Principal Oboist John Abberger has been part 

of the planning from the beginning, and has been a great 

champion of the artistic improvements of the space. 

Director of Marketing Alexandra Skoczylas contributed 

so much to the project management of this phase, and I am 

very grateful for her wisdom, hard work and support of the 

renovations, while she and her team achieved the highest 

ticket sales in Tafelmusik’s history. Campaign Manager 

Fallon Butler did a wonderful job with the capital 

fundraising, and did so cheerfully. 

We are thankful to our amazing and loyal sponsors and 

supporters, with a special note of great appreciation to Sun 

Life Financial, our Season Presenting Sponsor for eleven 

consecutive seasons. Sun Life Financial was also the lead 

sponsor for a major fundraising gala with the University

Aside from the obvious economic benefit of public support 

of the Canadian arts and culture industry that annually 

contributes $85 billion to the GDP and $25 billion in tax 

revenues, government investment in the arts provides for 

and nurtures creative expression in ways beyond measure, 

helping us define and strengthen our communities and 

country. We wholeheartedly thank Canada Council for the 

Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, and 

Canadian Heritage, for their strong support of our annual 

and special project initiatives, and that of helping Tafelmusik 

to be a leading Canadian ambassador on the competitive 

world stage through critically needed tour grant support. 

In the 2012/13 season, Canada’s Tafelmusik celebrated a 

unique artistic identity and role on the demanding and 

exhilarating home, national and world stages and continued 

to be one of the leading orchestras of our kind in the world. 

Our touring and home schedule was jam-packed, and fitting 

it all in last season can be likened to fitting size 12 feet into 

size 6 shoes! Our Director of Artistic Administration Beth 

Anderson is an amazing miracle worker in concurrently 

managing many tours! In addition to a very busy home 

season, the orchestra undertook a major tour to the USA 

with Alison Mackay’s House of Dreams, and The Galileo Project 

was thoroughly enjoyed by our Western Canadian audiences. 

We were so grateful for Opera Atelier’s invitation for us to 

be part of their magnificent performances in Toronto and at 

Penn State – and we could not have been happier for 

Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg for 

their incredible success at the Salzburg Festival, 

Glimmerglass Festival, and their upcoming productions at 

La Scala and Versailles. 

We were thrilled to continue the launch of our own new 

record label called Tafelmusik Media. 13,000 Tafelmusik 

Media CDs and DVDs were sold in the label’s first year. The 

launch of our own label has been an international initiative 

that will sow seeds for the organization‘s future growth in 

recording and broadcasting, as well as build audiences 

around the world in the years to come. Tafelmusik Media 

releases include new digital, live performance, studio CD and 

DVD recordings, and re-releases of previous Tafelmusik 

recordings from SONY Classical and CBC Records. We 

continued our recording of the Beethoven Symphony cycle 

with Bruno Weil, along with the recording and filming of 

House of Dreams by the Tritonus recording team and with film 

producer Gordon Henderson of 90 th Parallel Productions.

developed by Réjean Tremblay, with increased audio and 

video recordings of Tafelmusik. 

LOOKING AHEAD 

Tafelmusik is experiencing a huge creative surge. In 

colloquial terms, this period performance orchestra and 

choir has become the cool kid on the block. And the sheer 

volume of creative activity and pure chutzpah to make it 

happen has been staggering. We will continue to fearlessly 

push our boundaries. Tafelmusik is looking at the next major 

leap in its life on the local, national and international stage. 

Our vision is very ambitious yet doable, and we will achieve 

this in a wise artistic and fiscal context. Through a 

collaborative strategic planning process, we are putting 

things in place now that will sustain us far into the future so 

that Tafelmusik and its audiences will enjoy the music, 

inspiration and success that we’ve experienced together for 

many years. 

Tafelmusik casts its vision in bold strokes, accomplishes 

much artistically on the world stage, and undertakes 

considerable artistic activity while keeping its finances in 

order. Tafelmusik also has a very strong board and staff 

team, and it cherishes a tremendously loyal family of 

audience members, donors, sponsors and volunteers. 

Tafelmusik understands that, in this internationally 

competitive world, it is vital to collaboratively build a legacy 

of excellence in all it does. 

The 2012-2015 period is a period of tremendous 

inspiration, growth and change, with initiatives that include: 

VENUE: A major renovation of our home venue at Trinity- 

St. Paul’s Centre and the expansion of Koerner Hall 

programmes to enable significant audience development and 

live recording projects. 

AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT: institution of audience 

development programmes to attract new audience members 

and to create greater age diversity in our audience. 

RECORDING: The establishment of the Tafelmusik 

Media multiplatform label and digital concert hall. 

TOURING: The renewal and revitalization of Tafelmusik’s 

touring presence in North America and Europe, and the 

focus on recently established and new priority markets in 

South America, Asia and Australia. 

ARTIST TRAINING: Creation of artist training with the 

establishment the Tafelmusik International Baroque 

Academy. 

PHILANTHROPY: The expansion of capital, major gift 

and endowment philanthropy programmes. 

GOVERNANCE: Governance development to include a 

strong focus on ongoing board nomination and succession 

planning and the updating of the 1989 organizational bylaws. 

SUCCESSION PLANNING: The national and 

international search for a new music director, and the 

celebration of over three decades of remarkable 

accomplishment of Tafelmusik’s current music director 

Jeanne Lamon. 

Tafelmusik has had an outstanding and long track record of 

strong, sage and responsible Board leadership at strategic, 

philanthropic and fiduciary levels. The input from the Board 

in strategic planning was so helpful in framing options and 

actions available to the organization. Board members not 

only ensured the success of the gala, they provided major 

assistance with sponsorship and also through their personal 

gifts for the Board campaign. A special thank you goes to 

Board Chair Andy Kenins whose thoughtful and 

knowledgeable leadership is so appreciated by us all. Andy 

dedicates many hours as Chair and I’m sure questions some 

days which is his full-time job. His grace and grounded, 

thoughtful approach has been so important at this time in 

Tafelmusik’s history. He has the trust of the board, 

musicians and staff, and generously keeps his door open for 

many conversations. At this AGM, we salute Treasurer Jeff 

Bennett whose attentiveness and spot-on questions along 

with his quiet but very effective action orientation is valued 

and appreciated by the senior staff team. Trina McQueen, 

in addition to all her assistance with the campaign and 

campaign visits, is one of our beloved wise owls on the 

search committee and board. Vice-Chair John Formusa has 

been so generous and his astute participation in the many 

aspects of Tafelmusik is really valued. We say a very fond 

farewell to Mary Turner, who after two active terms on our 

Board is stepping down during a very internationally busy 

time in her life. We are so appreciative to Mary whose 

experience in the arts, straight-forward advice and active 

participation in the success in our galas has made a big 

difference in the life of Tafelmusik.

TREASURER’S REPORT 

Tafelmusik is a world class orchestra led by our extremely 

talented Music Director, Jeanne Lamon. Jeanne, together 

with our musicians, choir, the Managing Director, Tricia 

Baldwin, and our staff has delivered another very successful 

year. Of course this would not be possible without the very 

loyal support of Tafelmusik by our members, donors and 

patrons. We are also fortunate to have a strong and 

committed board under the able leadership of Andy Kenins, 

our Board Chair. 

Tafelmusik has a long standing tradition of excellence in 

financial management. The 2012/13 season is no exception 

and represents the 13 th successive surplus. We have 

distributed the summary financial statements, as these are 

easier to follow than the complete financial statement 

package. Full financial statements are available from the 

Tafelmusik office. 

Key Highlights of the Statement of Revenue and Expenses- 

Operating Fund: 

The 2012/2013 operating surplus was $88,293. It is in line 

with the business plan which incorporated several new 

initiatives and an extensive touring program. 

Concert revenues continued to grow, and 2012/13 season 

represented the highest ticket sales in Tafelmusik’s history at 

almost $1.8 MM. 

Tafelmusik is strongly supported by the Toronto Arts 

Council, Ontario Arts Council, Canada Council grants and 

the Trillium Foundation. Operating and project grants total 

$1.02MM, decreased slightly from a year earlier with the 

Investment in the Arts grant which was structured as a 

declining balance grant programme over a three year period. 

Tafelmusik has undertaken a $3 MM Capital Campaign to 

improve the acoustics, seating and stage at its home venue. 

As of June 30, 2013, $321,007 had been expended on the 

renovations, with $470,000 in grants and donations collected 

by that date. As of this AGM, $2.6MM has been pledged at 

this time, with almost $2MM received and deposited. 

Towards this campaign, Tafelmusik received a $500,000 

matching grant from Canadian Heritage’s Cultural Spaces 

Canada fund and a $1MM gift from the Honourable Henry 

N.R. Jackman. Phase One was completed this summer, for 

which $1.45MM was earmarked from the Capital Campaign 

and spent to build a new stage, improve the acoustics, 

provide new seating, increase accessibility and beautify the 

space. The renovation expenses will be capitalized as 

leasehold improvements amortized over a ten year period on 

a straight-line basis.

Tafelmusik toured extensively in 12/13. The highlight of 

which was the large USA tour and the very successful 

Western Canada tour. Touring revenues vary greatly with the 

number and scale of the touring program. 

Fundraising revenue for the annual operating campaigns 

decreased slightly due to the focus on major gifts for the 

capital campaign. We very much appreciate the generosity of 

our members, board and friends who continue to show their 

enthusiasm for the orchestra and chamber choir. The work 

of Tafelmusik staff, the Gala Committee and Board 

members ensured the gala with the University Health 

Network and the Artists Health Centre was a success, 

generating approximately $140,000 net income for 

Tafelmusik. In particular we would like to thank David 

Linds who chaired this year’s event for us and Mary Turner 

who headed up the auction. 

Recording and Broadcasting revenue increased this year with 

the continued successful launch of Tafelmusik’s own label, 

Tafelmusik Media. 

Tafelmusik also maintains a strong financial position 

through a strong balance sheet. It has no debt or deficit. 

Due to the changing of accounting rules, Tafelmusik 

retrospectively adopted the requirements of the Canadian 

Institute of Chartered Accountant’s Handbook and has 

adopted the Canadian Accounting Standards for Not-for- 

Profit Organizations. The changes required Tafelmusik to 

absorb the pre-paid subscription expenses for the following 

season, rather than the previous practice of expensing 

subscription costs in the season to which they relate. This is 

a one-time adjustment, and you will note the previous two 

seasons have been restated reflecting this adjustment. 

In addition to $1,069,116 in Net Assets on our Statement of 

Financial Position, the Ontario Arts Foundation holds a 

pool of endowment funds totaling $4,155,001 on behalf of 

Tafelmusik as of June 30, 2013. Tafelmusik is the income 

beneficiary of these funds which are held in a dedicated 

account. Tafelmusik will receive the investment income on 

the endowment assets held by the OAF in perpetuity. 

Tafelmusik did receive $143,735 in income from the OAF 

this past season. Tafelmusik does not have access to the 

capital in this fund, and does not manage the capital. 

The following is a summary of the funds shown on the 

Statement of Financial Position: 

The Artistic Fund is a Board designated fund and represents 

amounts that have been set aside for the specific artistic 

projects. The projects may include touring, recording,

education and programming initiatives and require approval 

by the Board of Directors. This fund was not used in 

2012/13, but the Board has authorized further use of $40M 

from the Artistic Fund for the House of Dreams project 

filming and editing that took place in the summer of 2013. 

The balance is $329,244. 

The Silver Anniversary Fund is also a Board designated fund 

and represents funds received in the Orchestra’s, Choir’s and 

Jeanne Lamon’s 25 th year to honour the Silver Anniversary. 

This fund’s objectives are to cover specific projects such as 

summer institute scholarships, apprenticeship programme 

expenditures and other educational initiatives, all as 

approved by the Board of Directors. In the 2012/13 year, 

$21,416 this fund was used for the first Tafelmusik Winter 

Institute artist training programme. The fund’s balance sits 

at $21,200. 

The “Continuo Fund” Endowment Fund is held by 

Tafelmusik and represents donated funds from which only 

the income is to be used for operating requirements, also at 

the discretion of the Board of Directors. This fund was 

established to provide long term stability for the orchestra. 

As of June 30, 2013, this fund totaled $181,632. During the 

course of the year, $72,750 comprising the balance of the 

Horst Dantz and Don Quick Endowment Fund was 

received. 

The Creative Trust Working Capital for the Arts Fund is an 

internally restricted fund. The Creative Trust organization 

developed this programme to assist Toronto’s mid-sized 

performing arts organizations to achieve long-term 

sustainability. Annual Creative Trust grants required the 

organization to carry no annual or accumulated deficit while 

participating in the programme, and Tafelmusik has since 

continued to have no accumulated deficit. As of June 30, 

2012, the Creative Trust Fund totaled $402,100. 

Tafelmusik’s Board of Directors approved the future 

purpose of the fund which is to provide ongoing working 

capital as well as funding for future artistic and strategic 

initiatives. The use of the fund requires approval by the 

Board of Directors. 

Our auditors, Clarke Henning LLP, have again provided us 

with a clean opinion in their auditors report. The standard 

qualification for charitable organizations regarding the 

auditor’s inability to verify the completeness of records of 

donation revenues is referenced in their report. 

Summarized Statement of Financial Position: this represents 

a snapshot of Tafelmusik’s financial position at the fiscal 

year-end. Key items are: 

Cash and marketable securities (short term deposits) confirm 

a healthy cash position. As in other years, Tafelmusik’s cash 

is high in June because of the receipts from subscription 

renewals for the upcoming season. This is slightly increased 

from last year as a result of timing and receipts from the 

Capital Campaign. 

Prepaid expenses are expenditures incurred by June 30 that 

relate to the next season. You will note that pre-paids are 

lower this season as the new accounting practices prohibited 

the allocation of subscription expenses to be deferred, 

although subscription revenues must be deferred. 

Deferred revenue reflects revenue of subscriptions, pre-paid 

sponsorship and government grants. 

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT 

Tafelmusik has a demonstrated history sound financial 

management. Extensive budgeting, monitoring, forecasting 

and risk management processes are the foundation of this 

success, along with strong financial contingency planning. 

Fiscal success is demonstrated in part by being deficit free 

during a period of great artistic expansion, having thirteen 

successive surplus budgets, significant revenue growth in 

earned, private sector and public sector support, over 

$800,000 in balance sheet funds and $4.1MM held in the 

OAF. We have doubled our revenues since 1999/2000. The 

next large growth areas are: a) major and planned gifts, b) 

sponsorship, and c) our endowment as well as the limited 

balance of the capital campaign for venue improvements. 

Tafelmusik has aggressively grown its revenues to offset 

some of the challenges and risks in touring and recording. 

The Board approves and monitors the annual budget. The 

Finance Committee, which I head up as Treasurer, is also 

charged with monthly monitoring the current and upcoming 

season budgets and forecasts in a detailed and rigorous 

manner. 

Tafelmusik manages financial risks by identifying the risks, 

having financial contingencies and having alternate plans 

when challenges occur. Tafelmusik’s general operating 

principle is risk management (for example, having financial 

contingency plans) and not risk avoidance given our core 

activities (for example, touring) involve outside decisionmakers 

and there is inherent risk in not being the sole 

decision-maker. 

The Board has approved a balanced budget for the 2013/14 

season, and is very pleased the organization can expand its 

activities in the key areas of international touring, recording, 

audience development, education and outreach while 

remaining fiscally responsible. In effect the organization will 

continue to concurrently invest in artistic excellence on an 

international level, in our musicians’, audiences’ and the 

organization’s future.

OUR REVITALIZATION PROJECT 

Since launching the $3 million Revitalization Project at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre, we have raised over $2.5 million from our
