Bialon, BSEENational Security inOC Alums’ Handsou can’t see their work …and it’s not just becausethey work behind thescenes. That’s what happenswhen you work on theB-2 Bomber, otherwise known as the“Stealth Bomber.”On enemy radar, it’s invisible …or at least as close to invisible as youcan get. In military operations since1999, stealth bombers have flownvirtually undetected from the UnitedStates to places like Kosovo, Afghanistanand Iraq to take out targetswith remarkable precision. The people who give the B-2 itsunique capabilities include a largegroup of OC alumni who work atNorthrop Grumman, one of thelargest aerospace companies in theworld.4

Oklahoma Christianhas 21 Alumni employed atNorthrop Grumman’s localTinker Air Force Base location. They design and test equipment, operational programs and systemsthat help make the B-2 the onlyaircraft in the world that combineslong range, a large weapons payloadand stealth.“As an engineering major, whenyou come out of school, you decideif you want to play or make a difference,”said Ellis McCurtain, one ofthe first OC alums hired at NorthropGrumman in 1999. “We think we’remaking a difference.”“I feel my job has significancebecause the B-2 has been a successfulplatform,” said Andy Fritsch,a 2004 OC grad. “It feels good toknow it played an integral role in thewar effort.”That integral role included “kickingdown the door” for U.S. troopsentering Iraq. The operation, whicheffectively ended Saddam Hussein’sregime, was made possible by a fleetof stealth two-pilot bombers thatwent into Iraq unaided and took outkey military targets. The Northrop Grumman team experiencesa different pressure underfire. When there is a glitch, or potentialglitch, Northrop Grumman’s OCalumni have the company’s bottomline in their hands. The decision to“fail” a project that hasn’t testedquite right could cost NorthropGrumman a contract worth millionsof dollars. In wartime, the stakes are evenhigher. If something’s not perfect, itcan put pilots or an operation at risk.It can mean the difference betweena precision bomb strike and one thatputs civilian lives in harm’s way. This is important stuff. NorthropGrumman’s OC alumni say the highstandards, ethics and experiences oftheir OC education prepared themfor this career. They’ve earned therespect of their peers and bossesto the point where they’ve risen tohigher levels of the company.“Teamwork is key,” said RickOwens, who has an electrical engineeringdegree and anMBA from OklahomaChristian.“At OC, we hada lot of systemsprojects where wehad to work together. That’s reallyhelped at NorthropGrumman in the workwe do.”“Coming through theengineering program,we had the confidencewe could handle anything. That carried overto the workplace. OC guysget thrown into fires here.Things have to be done,”McCurtain said. “You had to have agood work ethic to succeed at OC.We had experience with variouscomputer programs and tools. Weall had our hands on it before wegot here. Other schools didn’t havethat.”Accreditation makes OCCCCU’s engineering leaderThe Accreditation Board for Engineeringand Technology recently accredited OC’scomputer engineering program, makingOklahoma Christian the only school in theCouncil for Christian Colleges and Universitieswith ABET accreditation of three of itsengineering programs. CCCU is composed of105 colleges and universities nationwide.OC’s electrical engineering and mechanicalengineering programs also are nationallyaccredited by ABET, a professional accreditingorganization for engineering programs.Oklahoma State University, Oral RobertsUniversity, the University of Oklahoma andthe University of Tulsa are the only collegesin the state of Oklahoma besides OklahomaChristian with ABET-accredited engineeringprograms. The accreditation process, a voluntary,non-governmental process of peer review, isused to assure quality in educationalinstitutions and programs. Theaccreditation shows that OklahomaChristian meets or exceedscriteria that touch all areas ofthe engineering educationalprograms, such as faculty, facilities, curriculum, support fromwithin the university andinteraction with industry.Accreditation also allowspotential employers to knowthe university’s graduatesare prepared to begin professionalpractice.“Oklahoma Christianputs particular emphasison the development of communicationskills, ethical decision makingand interdisciplinary thinking in all of its engineeringprograms,” said Dr. Jeff Bigelow, thechair of OC’s electrical and computer engineeringdepartments. “Our goal is to becomethe engineering school of choice for prospectivestudents and for prospective employers. The accreditation of all of our programs is anindicator for both groups that OC engineeringcannot be ignored in their decisions.”Oklahoma Christian has become theengineering school of choice for an increasingnumber of students. The addition of anengineering admissions specialist position, combined with faculty recruiting initiatives, helped increase enrollment in the School ofEngineering this year. For more information on OC’s School ofEngineering, go to www.oc.edu/engineering.5

Oklahoma Christian has recorded its second consecutive year ofrecord enrollment and has topped the 2,000 mark on the OklahomaCity campus for the first time in school history. ACT testscores for incoming students continue to rise as well.“These are exciting times at Oklahoma Christian,” universitypresident Mike O’Neal said. “We have hired 11 new outstandingfaculty members this fall and hope to hire several more. Our campusis seeing a resurgence with new and refurbished dorms andapartments to accommodate the additional students.”“We’re very pleased that these young people and their parentsappreciate the value of a faith-based college education,” O’Nealsaid. “The quality of education that we offer, combined with afriendly, attractive campus, really provides our students an idealenvironment for learning and preparing for life and a career. Thatis reflected in the high caliber of students we are attracting.”Enrollment at OC for the fall semester is 2,053, compared with1,947 for the 2004 fall semester, a 5.4 percent increase over lastyear’s previous record high. The 2005 figures include 1,838 undergraduateand 215 graduate students.OC’s Cascade College campus in Portland, Oregon, also showedan increase with 286 students this year.A solid retention rate of more than 70 percent combined witha near-record 549 freshmen and more than 100 transfer studentscontributed to OC’s record enrollment. Also included are fourHurricane Katrina evacuees who received free tuition.OC’s new nursing program (launched this year in conjunctionwith nearby Southern Nazarene University) enabled numerousstudents to remain at Oklahoma Christian instead of transferringto another school.“There is a real energy on campus with our new academic programs, new housing, new faculty, and especially our new students,”Director of Admissions and Marketing Risa Forrester said. “Ourunprecedented admissions and retention numbers of the past twoyears are a credit to our faculty and staff, not to mention our currentstudents and alumni who tout OC to campus visitors and toprospective students across the country.”6

IfTheseWallsCouldTalkWhat inspiredApril Tate, a fifthgradepublic schoolteacher, to make an investmentof nearly $3,000 in Oklahoma ChristianUniversity? The same spirit that inspires herto be a teacher and missionary, thatinspires her to impact lives for good.April received her education degreefrom Oklahoma Christian in 1996. Shebegan teaching in her home state ofLouisiana and now teaches in Texas. She also enjoys doing mission workand is a decorating consultant forSouthern Living at Home.Since her graduation, April hassupported Oklahoma Christian bygiving in response to phone-a-thons.She recently decided to participate inBricks and Memories, a program designedto raise funds for a maintenanceendowment for the residence halls andapartments by allowing participants toname rooms and suites.Room 101 of Gunn-HendersonWest Hall, which was April’s first homeaway from home at OC, is now the“April Tate” room. From hanging out watching moviesunder piles of blankets in the lounge,to gathering for all-night study vigils, there was something going on everynight. April described it as a “who’sgot-the-coffee-pot-tonightkind ofthing.”“You were forced together in someways, so it caused bonding and friendships,”she said. “I loved always knowingthere were great friends next doorand down the hall.”One of April’s favorite memories isordering pizza after curfew and getting friends together to bakechocolate chip cookies in her little toaster oven. But she realizesthat living in a dorm had a much deeper impact on her life thansimply increasing her chocolate chip cookie consumption.“I can’t imagine not having been on campus. That was howyou got to know everybody. You were in classes with them, yousat by them in Chapel, you ate in thedining hall together, and you lived in thedorms together,” April said. “Everybodyon my hall – those were my friends. Ididn’t know anybody going into thefirst week of school, and yet by the endof the year these were my new bestfriends.”That sense of fellowship, friendshipand family led April to OC as a studentand ultimately led her to participate inBricks and Memories.“Ninety percent of my going toOC was the close family feeling we allhad because so many of us lived oncampus,” April said. “I could have gonesomewhere else, but I chose OC becauseof that feeling. When you walk aroundcampus everybody says ‘hi’ to you.Bricks and Memories is such an immediateway for us as alumni to be a part ofgiving someone that family feeling.”April’s many scrapbooks house thememories of the learning, growth andfriendships gained at OC.She cherishes these memories, andshe realizes that part of what went intocreating them was the physical setting, the bricks that were behind and aroundeach of the memories.“When I looked at the brochure,I thought, ‘Three thousand dollars!I don’t have three thousand dollars.I’m a teacher!’ But when I saw how itbroke down monthly, I said to myself,‘Well, that I can handle,’” she said.“You know it’s not much more than mygym membership. I may use my gymmembership a few times a month, butthat dorm room is being used every day. I am happy to see themakeover the old rooms are getting.”For more information about Bricks and Memories, go towww.oc.edu/advancement/memorial.By John S. Michener (‘97)8

NATIONAL ALUMNI COUNCILDan Miller*Alan Phillips, Chair of the NACCarol Copeland, Vice-ChairJoyce Swanson, Secretary**new member since the group photoThis is clearly not your typical honoraryboard. When you talk to members of OC’sNational Alumni Council, their excitementis of the “reach right through the phone, hold hands and jump up and down” variety. This group of 13 couldn’t be thatpassionate about Oklahoma Christianalumni could they? The answer isoverwhelmingly “yes.”Charles Villines (’56) of Durant, Okla.,is the newest member of the council. Hewas the first alumni president of OC’spredecessor, Central Christian College.Villines’ voice is rapid-fire as he describeswhat makes this board different.“What it amounts to is people who care,”he says. “They’re excited about what’shappening and the direction of the school.”And that is what really has Villines going– the school. “It’s growing. It’s alive,” hesays. The council’s chair, Alan Phillips (’76),knows a lot about Oklahoma Christian. He spent 17 years in the president’s anddevelopment offices on campus beforemoving to the Dallas area. He’s seen a lotof different boards come and go, but thisone is different.“I think it starts at the top. I think Dr.O’Neal has made a priority of formerstudents,” Phillips said. “Dr. O’Neal wantsthe alumni to own the alumni program. Inthat, I think he is empowering this councilto represent that voice to the university.”The National Alumni Council met forthe first time in August 2004. The membersare appointed to three-year terms by Dr.O’Neal. These members help reconnect thealumni to the university by giving feedbackand ideas to the Alumni Relations Officeand by helping establish regional alumnichapters. The last National Alumni Councilmeeting coincided with the Earn YourWings freshman orientation program. Each council member stood on stage andpassed on a few nuggets of wisdom to theincoming freshmen. As Phillips looked out over the youngfaces, he chose to give them this analogy …This journey is a like a marathon. Up to nowyou’ve been on a 5k run. Now, on Monday, whenyou start class, you come out of the blocks on amarathon. We, as alumni, are standing beside you10

handing you cups of water. We’re there to supportyou.“Being an alum, we’re saying to them,‘Welcome to this journey,’ and ‘We’rehere for you,’” Phillips said. “That degreemeans something. They join in with afamily of former students.”Carol Copeland (’74), the council’s vicechair, has been handing out buckets ofwater by herself in Omaha, Neb. – farremoved from Oklahoma and Texas, where the majority of OC alumni reside.Several years ago, Copeland begantaking interested students from hercongregation to Spring Sing. Copelandnext set up an OC recruiting table at acity-wide college fair in Omaha. She meets prospective students andforwards their names and addresses toan admissions counselor. This year, twofreshmen chose to attend OklahomaChristian because of Copeland’s initialefforts. The responsibility Copeland feels to heralma mater is part of what Phillips and thecouncil want to emphasize to alumni.“Being an alum is something you get tobe,” Phillips said. “It brings responsibilityto us as alumni.”There are numerous ways alumni canreconnect to the university, whether it’shelping form regional chapters, attendingHomecoming, sending prospectivestudent names to the Admissions Office, bringing youth groups to campus activitiesor giving financially.“I think everybody’s busy and life goeson. So why should I make a priority ofreconnecting with OC?” Phillips said.“It’s all about giving back. If I gainedsomething of value, I want that valueshared with others. I want to expressthanks for the value that I was given.”Tulsan Donna Smith (’79), also acouncil member, is an example of makingOC a priority. A stay-at-home mom forthe past 18 years, Smith had just reenteredthe teaching profession when shewas asked to be a part of the nationalcouncil.Despite her major life change, Smithsaid she just couldn’t turn down theopportunity to share the school’s excitingprogress with her fellow alumni.“It’s very encouraging to see thedirection that Dr. O’Neal and the schoolare going,” Smith said. “All of us feel themomentum building.”By Allison Day (’92)Regional Alumni Chapters By Allison Day (’92)You may be familiar with that old movietrivia game, “the Six Degrees of KevinBacon,” where people mention anotheractor and see if they can connect him orher in six or fewer steps to Kevin Bacon.Playing the OC version (How manylinks can you make to Dr. StaffordNorth!?) now has become easier with thecreation of regional alumni chapters. These chapters, supported by theNational Alumni Council, are designed toraise OC’s profile in local churches andcommunities, help the Admissions Officerecruit and identify potential students, and reconnect alumni through social andcareer networking opportunities. To date, six chapters have been formed. They range from a fully functioninggroup like the North Texas chapter tothe Oklahoma City chapter that is in itspreliminary organizational stages.North TexasThe two-year-old North Texas chapteris the granddaddy of the alumni chapterprogram. Chapter vice president RussBartee (’76) said the group is focusedon providing scholarships to areastudents, increasing the university’s namerecognition in the Dallas/Fort Worth areaand providing networking opportunitiesfor alumni. The chapter has accomplished thesegoals through a number of activities, including “Eagle Exit” sendoff eventsfor high school graduates headed to OC,tailgating events at Texas Rangers baseballgames, bus trips for potential studentsto various campus events, and annualmeetings that feature a silent auction anda speaker from the university.Bartee said the group has been pleasedwith its progress and has plans to facilitateeven more networking. One potentialidea is for the chapter to host a receptionon campus for OC seniors interested inmoving to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, allowing students to interact with keyalumni in various industries from theMetroplex.Kansas CityIn its first year, the Kansas City chapterheld three events with the support of thealumni and admissions offices. The first event was the KC Eagle Bashat the NAIA national men’s basketballtournament. KC alumni hosted a buffetbefore the Eagles’ Sweet 16 game. Next, the group had a tailgating party before aKansas City Royals baseball game, andfinally, a summer sendoff for OC studentsin August. A scholarship was given to anincoming freshman at the event.“We’re still learning what we can dofor the future,” said Elaine Kincaid (’01).“We need to be pulling from prospectiveand current students as much as possible. When you have the younger peopleinvolved, you’re going to get the olderpeople involved, too.”HoustonThe Houston chapter has had threeorganizational meetings so far, includingan organizational meeting at NationalAlumni Council secretary Joyce Swanson’shouse. Swanson said the Houston area isso vast that geography, rather than alumninumbers, may be their biggest obstacle. The group has set up a Yahoo! group. Tocontact the chapter, go to groups.yahoo.com/group/houstonocalumni.TulsaThe Tulsa regional alumni chapteris organizing now. National AlumniCouncil member Dewayna Petre (’90)said the group has sent out surveys andhopes to gather feedback soon. Alongwith the Oklahoma Christian Women’sAssociation, the group hosted a benefitgolf tournament. Petre said they plan toschedule family nights for alumni andprovide networking.Red RiverThis group covers the area fromArdmore to Durant, Okla., and down toSherman, Texas. The group has had oneorganizational meeting so far.Oklahoma CityNational Alumni Council member PatHanna (’68) said plans are being madeto organize a new chapter. The group islooking for interested alumni and friendsof the university. To become involved with any chapteror to start a chapter in your local area, call(405) 425-5110 or e-mail angela.morton@oc.edu.11

Exciting Activities, ChangesAwait Returning Alumni“We didn’t have that when I was a studenthere!”That is sure to be a comment you’ll heara lot at this year’s Homecoming. Fromthe brand-new dorms and apartments tothe high-tech washing machines that sendemail messages when your load is done, thecampus has changed.Students certainly have more opportunitiesand luxuries than we did. But what hasn’tchanged is the connection we all have asfellow OC alumni.“In my own life, I feel a deep connectionto friends, but I also want as manyopportunities as possible to be around menlike Bailey McBride, Harold Fletcher, LorenGieger and Joe Watson,” Alumni RelationsDirector Stephen Eck said. “My life hasbeen so deeply affected by the work of theseprofessors. I want to stay connected, and Iwant my children to benefit from walkingamong these giants.”This year’s Homecoming, November 4-5,2005, will celebrate those connections in newand exciting ways that your entire family willenjoy.“More and more of our work in alumnirelations focuses on family connections. AsOC has grown and matured over the last 55years, more of our alumni are sending theirchildren to OC,” Eck said.It starts the second you make the familiarturn off Memorial Road. It’s the samecampus, but it certainly looks different. The grass is greener, the buildings aremodernized and more numerous, the treesare taller, and the campus is brimming withmore students than ever before.Times are good. All glory and honor toGod for his abundant blessings!Homecoming festivities for alumni beginwith a golf tournament on Friday afternoon. On Friday evening, the Alumni Banquetwill honor exceptional women from OC’shistory – Avanelle Baird, widow of formerOC president Dr. James O. Baird, and EllieMiller, who is an alumna of Central ChristianCollege (which later was renamed OklahomaChristian).Saturday’s events are family-oriented. AfterChapel that morning, a parade will featureclub floats and students throwing candy andprizes to the crowd. The parade will lead toan outdoor picnic with hamburgers, hotdogs,a moon bounce, pony rides and a small“barrel train” for the kids. Both the women’s and men’s basketballgames will be held on Saturday this year. TheLady Eagles tip off at 1 p.m., followed bythe men’s game at 3 p.m. The Homecomingcoronation ceremony will be held at halftimeof the men’s game.Following the basketball games, anotheroutdoor picnic in the Thelma GaylordForum will allow alumni and students tocelebrate together.Of course, we all have our reasons tocome back. We love the basketball games, the food and those visits with our favoriteteachers. We love seeing our old friends, andeven running to Johnnie’s for a hamburgeror attending services at the congregation wewent to as students. We want to reconnect.“That is the true reason to come backfor Homecoming 2005: to spend timereconnecting to our formative years, whenour friends and professors made deep andlasting influences on our lives,” Eck said.“There is something deeply gratifying andemotionally satisfying about this type ofreflection and remembrance.”9:00 am - 2:00 pm11:00 am11:00 am - 11:30 am12:00 pm - 1:30 pm6:00 pm8:00 pm10:00 pmFriday, November 4*Oklahoma Christian Women’s Association Craft SaleLocation: The BarnContact: Christine Meredith405.425.5122, Christine.Meredith@oc.eduOklahoma Christian University Alumni Golf TournamentLocation: Coffee Creek Golf ClubContact: David Lynn405.425.5645, David.Lynn@oc.eduChapelLocation: Hardeman AuditoriumContact: Angela Morton405.425.5110, Angela.Morton@oc.eduLuncheonsCentral Christian College and Fifty-Year Graduates LuncheonLocation: WBC 104Contact: Stephen Eck405.425.5118, Stephen.Eck@oc.eduOklahoma Christian Women’s Association LuncheonLocation: The BarnContact: Christine Meredith405.425.5122, Christine.Meredith@oc.eduAlumni Association BanquetLocation: Gaylord University CenterContact: Dana Holley405.425.5094, Dana.Holley@oc.eduHomecoming Musical: “Into the Woods”Location: Hardeman AuditoriumContact: Patricia Groves405.425.5530, Patricia.Groves@oc.eduTraditional OC Eagle BonfireLocation: North side of campusContact: Brittany PartinBrittany.Partin@student.oc.edu* schedule subject to change9:00 am - 2:00 pm8:00 am - 10:00 am10:00 am - 11:00 am11:30 am - 1:00 pm1:00 pm3:00 pm5:15 pm8:00 pmSaturday, November 5*Oklahoma Christian Women’s Association Craft SaleLocation: The BarnContact: Christine Meridith405.425.5122, Christine.Meridith@oc.eduClass Reunion Breakfasts andSocial Service Club Reunion BreakfastsLocation: McIntosh ConservatoryContact: Angela Morton405.425.5110, Angela.Morton@oc.eduAlumni ChapelLocation: Hardeman AuditoriumContact: Stephen Eck405.425.5118, Stephen.Eck@oc.eduThe Eagle Bash:Pregame Celebration Picnic and Children’s CarnivalLocation: Courtyard between Gaylord University Centerand Payne Athletic CenterContact: Angela Morton405.425.5110, Angela.Morton@oc.eduWomen’s Basketball vs. Southwest Assemblies of GodLocation: Eagles’ NestContact: Julie Anderson405.425.5350, Julie.Anderson@oc.eduMen’s Basketball vs. Arkansas BaptistLocation: Eagles’ NestContact: Julie Anderson405.425.5350, Julie.Anderson@oc.eduHomecoming Coronation (at men’s halftime)Location: Eagles’ NestContact: Summer Lashley405.425.5908, Summer.Lashley@oc.eduHomecoming Finale Celebration: Alumni and StudentsLocation: Thelma Gaylord ForumContact: Angela Morton405.425.5110, Angela.Morton@oc.eduHomecoming Musical: “Into the Woods”Location: Hardeman AuditoriumContact: Patricia Groves405.425.5530, Patricia.Groves@oc.edu13

2005 HOMECOMINGHONOREESAvanelle Baird - Distinguished Honorary AlumnaAvanelle Baird, who has devoted her adult life toChristian education and Oklahoma Christian University, has been named a Distinguished HonoraryAlumna.“So much of my life is tied to OklahomaChristian,” Avanelle Baird said recently at herhome near the campus. “My hope has alwaysbeen that OC would stay close to its rootsand it is doing that. If Christian educationisn’t different, let’s not do it.”OC has been a major focus of Avanelle’slife since her late husband, Dr. James Baird, became the school’s first dean in 1950, thesecond person hired by the new CentralChristian College in Bartlesville.Four years later, James became presidentof the college and Avanelle’s life became awhirlwind of raising five children, entertainingthe Board of Trustees and friends of thecollege, speaking to ladies’ groups on behalfof the university and Bible teaching.Avanelle and James also hosted areapreachers and their wives annually to makesure the school maintained a close relationshipwith the churches of Christ.Somehow, she found time to help organizethe Stepping Stones, a Tulsa-based ladiessupport group that later became the OklahomaChristian Women’s Association.Avanelle graduated from Harding Universityin 1939 with a bachelor’s degree inbusiness. She served as a student secretaryfor Harding’s president, Dr. George S. Benson, during her four years of undergraduatework. After graduation, Avanelle worked for fiveyears with Arkansas Power and Light beforemoving to Nashville in 1944.While in Nashville, she worked as secretaryto Dr. Batsell Baxter, president of DavidLipscomb College. There she met James, aprofessor at the college, who was teaching, preaching and working on his doctorate.“I typed his dissertation before we hadcomputers,” she said. They were married in 1946. She completeda master’s degree in social sciences fromGeorge Peabody University in 1947. Thatdegree became useful in later years as shefrequently counseled fellow church members.By the time the Bairds moved with CentralChristian from Bartlesville to Oklahoma Cityin 1958, they had four children and wouldsoon have another.“When we first moved here, all this landwhere OC is now was pasture,” she said.“People in Oklahoma were on fire for Christianeducation at that time. The businesscommunity was also very receptive and wedeveloped an association with many people.”Summer foreign mission work was also animportant part of Avanelle’s life. She fondlyrecalls trips to Australia, Japan, and the Africancountries of Cameroon and Zimbabwe.Friends remember that Avanelle was a tirelessambassador for the university, speakingto women’s groups across Oklahoma, as wellas in Tennessee, Texas and Kansas, and atthe OC Lectureship.Avanelle began teaching preschool SundaySchool classes as a teenager and taughtwomen’s classes until a few years ago. She’salso a prolific writer, recently authoring twoBible workbooks entitled “The Jesus of theGospels,” published in 2001, and “Boughtwith a Price,” published in 2005.“The people I’ve been privileged to workwith and know all these years are what madeit worth the effort,” she said. “It has beena joy to find so many people with the samedreams and love for Christian education.”All five of Avanelle’s children, HarrietEstep, Lynn Jones, Frances Epperly, JimBaird, and Morrow Beth Jacobs, graduatedfrom OC. Her son Jim is a professor in OC’sCollege of Biblical Studies.Avanelle has 14 grandchildren and fivegreat-grandchildren. Three of her grandchildrenalso have graduated from the universityand two more will graduate in 2006.“Oklahoma Christian has been a blessingto my family,” Avanelle said. “OC has beenblessed through the years with a dedicatedfaculty and a wise and supportive board. Iam very thankful for Dr. (Mike) O’Neal’sleadership, his vision, his encouragementof world missions by our students, and hisdetermination to hold the university to theideals which brought it into existence.”Avanelle, who just turned 86, plans to stayactive.“I’m not good at doing nothing,” she said.By Ron Frost14

ELLIE MILLER - Distinguished AlumnaEllie Miller of Tulsa, Oklahoma, is beinghonored as this year’s Distinguished Alumna for hermany years of service and devotion to OklahomaChristian. When asked to recall her most cherishedmemories of Central Christian College inBartlesville, Ellie Miller began to tell of thedevotionals.Inside the magnificent entry hall of themansion – the centerpiece of the Bartlesvillecampus – or outside on the patio under thestars, students would quietly assemble in thestill of the evening. Soon their voices wouldsing praises to God, followed by scripturequotations and, finally, prayers. Then theywould quietly return to their rooms, havingbeen spiritually renewed by being together– with God.Just as precious, she said, are the memoriesof professors who became mentors andlifelong friends. Although she declines toname a favorite, Ellie particularly remembersBailey McBride and his sophomore Englishclass.“Oh, my, was he patient,” she laughed,“very patient and considerate. Also, HaroldFletcher, Joe Spaulding, Darvin Keck, Taylorand Oma Carter, and Rosemary Pledger areforever interwoven into our lives. As I lookback now, I realize that they could have goneanywhere, but they chose to remain committedto Central Christian, to provide a stablefoundation for the college.“Central Christian was a good experiencefor me,” Ellie said. “Coming from a largehigh school, the small college atmospherenurtured personal and spiritual identity. ALUMNI LetterOklahoma Christian Universityis growing, thriving and chargingahead in its mission to transformlives for Christian faith, leadershipand service. This issue ofVISION is replete with storiesof people who are living embodimentsof this mission. Our two distinguished alumnihonorees, Avanelle Baird andEllie Miller, both have beenmodel examples of lives lived forthe benefit of others. OC is soproud of the alumni who dailyadd value and goodwill to theuniversity’s reputation. In his 1946 convocation address,John Sloane Dickey, thegreat president of DartmouthCollege, said, “The world’stroubles are your troubles, andthere is nothing wrong with thisworld that better humanscannot fix.”Dr. Dickey had a tremendouspoint about the resiliency and determinationof human beings, buthis point stops short of the truth. The root problems of this worldwill never be fixed bybetter human beings. The root problems ofthis world can only befixed by God himself, working throughChristlike human beings. The tireless workof numerous alumnifrom Houston, whohave assisted displacedHurricane Katrina victims, is oneexample of OC alumni livinglives of compassion and carefor their fellow human beings.Earlier this month, OC studentsvoluntarily collected thousands ofdollars to assist hurricane victims. And more than 150 OC studentsvolunteered to give up their FallBreak in October to travel to theGulf Coast to assist with Hurricanecleanup efforts. There are countlessother examples ofOC family membersaround the world makinga difference in theircommunities.OC’s $34 millionhousing initiative hastransformed the campuswith immaculateliving facilities. Eventhis initiative will assist displacedhurricane victims. Oklahoma Citywill be the “home” of the NBA’sNew Orleans Hornets this season, and OC has partnered with thecity to provide housing for theteam’s front-office staff in ournew campus apartments.Oklahoma Christian remainscommitted to being a goodsteward of all our resources andblessings for the benefit of others. You can be proud of your almamater! As always, we want you toreturn to campus and see foryourself the growth of this greatuniversity. Please come home duringHomecoming 2005 to “Reconnect”with OC’s mission. Younot only will be amazed by OC’sprogress; you will be impressedwith the quality of the studentswho are a part of the OC family.By Stephen Eck (’92)Eagle ConnectIonBig changes are comingto OC’s alumni website. This spring, we’ll introduceEagle Connection, a brandnewalumni site featuring adirectory, job listings, forums, alumni profiles, chapter homepages and many other featuresjust for OC alumni. The new directory will allowyou to decide how muchinformation you’d like toshare about yourself … fromnothing, to just your nameand class, to all your contactand family information (oranything in between). You also will be able tonetwork with fellow alumni, mentor current OC studentsand build communities basedon your social service club, major or sports team.Be sure to visit www.oc.edu/alumni to take ourweb survey and let us knowwhat you’d like to see on youralumni website.
