PEZ RATON LODGE
PEZ RATON LODGEWHEN TO GOFall & WinterLos Roques experiences higher tidal fluctuationsduring the fall and winter months, making it a little more difficult to wade fishfor bones during October and November. However, the fish are of course still there, and anglers who don’t mind fishing a littlemore often out of the boat can have excellentsuccess. The autumn months are alsothe best periods for chasing permit andtarpon as well. There are also far feweranglers around this time of year.LOS ROQUESClosed in AugustThe lodge is typically closed for the monthof August to accommodate demand fromnon-angling European tourists on the island. If you would like to visit Los Roquesin August there is typically not a lot ofavailability, but please inquire for details asit may be possible.sEASONALITY / wHEN TO gO:Although Los Roques is located close tothe equator, the average temperature issurprisingly cool relative to other Caribbeanfisheries. Average temperatures areusually are between 65 - 80 degrees duringthe months of December through April(dry-season) and between 70-95 degreesduring the months of May - October(rainy-season). Moderate trade winds keepthings cool and anglers always commenthow comfortable the environment truly is.Rain is seldom a problem and almost nevershuts down a fishing day. The summermonths are marked by occasional cloudburstsand moderately heavier winds duringthe so-called rainy season. However, note that the area is marked by consistentwater shortages and excessive rains almostnever occur. Los Roques is blessed in thatits unique location in the Southern Caribbeanhas spared the little archipelago ofmajor hurricanes and tropical storms formany years.Spring & SummerThe best times of the year to wade fishLos Roques is the months of January -mid September. The fishing is wonderfulthroughout the spring and the majorityof American anglers visit during this time, only because the summer fishing opportunitiesare always overlooked. February,March, and April are by far the most popularwith Venezuelan weekenders and Europeansas well. One of our favorite timesto visit Islas de Los Roques is during thesummer months. The wind has usually laiddown, there are fewer gringo anglers onthe island (thus less fishing pressure) andthe fish seem to be a little less spooky.NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIESActivities at Los Roques that can be arrangedbeyond fishing include snorkeling, SCUBAdiving, swimming, beach combing, birding,wind-surfing, catamaran day cruises, ultra-liteflights, or simply relaxing in a remote peacefulsetting with a book on the beach. Thesmall village of approximately one thousandinhabitants is tons of fun to explore, peoplewatch, and do a little shopping. Guests canhike up to the top of the small mountainson Gran Roque for a little exercise, or hangout at one of the islands quaint restaurantsand bars. During the peak summer months, you will always encounter a few Europeansin town and the beach is usually inhabitedwith a little action as well. Folks who enjoy apeaceful romantic, sleepy, Caribbean islandwill fall in love with Gran Roque even if theyare not fishing. It is an awesome location forlow-maintenance non-angling companionswho are happy with gorgeous beaches and acharming tropical atmosphere.3435
