Product Range
Surface active agents, or short Surfactants, are usually organic
com pounds that are amphiphilic, meaning they contain both hydrophobic
and hydrophilic groups and are therefore soluble in both
organic solvents and water. They reduce the surface tension of a
liquid by adsorbing at the liquid-gas interface, allowing easier
spreading, and lower the interfacial tension between two liquids,
e.g. between oil and water, by adsorbing at the liquid-liquid interface.
Surfactants are used as emulsifiers, wetting agents, dispersants
and stabilizers for different chemical and industrial applications.
The selection of surfactants described in this brochure is offered
for the following application areas:
■ Air entraining agents for the construction industry
■ Antifoaming agents
■ Auxiliaries for the sugar industry
■ Emulsifiers for bitumen emulsions
■ Emulsifiers for emulsion polymerization
■ Emulsifiers for micro- and macro emulsions of fats,
be classified into anionic, cationic, non-ionic, and amphoteric
(dual charge) groups. The product overview on the following pages
is organized in this manner.
Emulsogen EPN range
Products from the Emulsogen ® EPN range serve as efficient emulsifiers
which reduce the grit level during polymerization and improve dis -
persion properties such as freeze-thaw stability, electrolyte resistance
and sheer stability. They are suitable for emulsion polymerization of
olefinic monomers or vinyl acetate together with other vinyl esters,
Emulsogen LCN range
Emulsogen ® LCN is a preferred surfactant in various application fields,
such as emulsion polymerization, coatings, adhesives, construction
and detergents. Specifically, as emulsifier for emulsion polymerization,
Emulsogen ® LCN improves the shear, temperature and electrolyte stability
of polymer dispersions. At the same time, it can be used in inverse
emulsion polymerization of water soluble monomers in hydrocarbons
and in emulsions of oils, fats, silicon oils, polyolefin waxes, alkyd resins,
acrylates, vinyl chloride and ethylene, in acrylic and styrene/acrylic
dispersions as well as in butadiene/styrene latex. Emulsogen ® EPN
also finds widespread use in pigment preparations, paints and coatings
as a dispersing and wetting agent.
emulsions, architectural paints, industrial and wood coatings,
Emulsogen ® LCN reduces the surface tension of the aqueous medium
and improves the wetting of hard surfaces. It is an efficient dispersing
and wetting agent in aqueous pigment preparations and can be added
to emulsion paints to improve the scrub resistance.
Nonyphenol ethoxylates
The Arkopal ® N grades are used as an emulsifier in emulsion polymerization,
as wax emulsifier, in pigment pastes and as stabilizer in paints
and coatings. They are resistant to metal salts, offer good dispersing
properties and, depending on the degree of ethoxylation, excellent
Tristyrylphenol ethoxylates
Emulsogen ® TS grades are an excellent dispersing agent for organic
pigments and carbon black to produce stable, free flowing pigment
preparations with high solid contents and with low viscosities. Used
in paints and coatings formulations, Emulsogen ® TS improves the
wetting and surface action. As wetting agents, Arkopal ® N 090 and
Arkopal ® N 100 are the most effective grades. The excellent emulsifying
properties of a number of Arkopal ® N grades furthermore allow
the preparation of stable emulsions.
Quaternary ammonium compounds
As quaternary fatty ammonium salts are compounds with strong
bactericidal and fungicidal action, Dodigen ® grades find widespread
use in disinfectant cleaners and also help to control algae, for instance
in cooling water and swimming baths. In cosmetics, Präpagen ® and
Dodigen ® grades are used e.g. in the formulation of hair care products.
In the textile industry, Präpagen ® and Dodigen ® grades are
Amine oxides
Amine oxides are good surfactants and, unlike fatty alkyl ammonium
salts, can be used together with anionic compounds without impairment
of their surface-active properties. Our Genaminox ® grades are
used especially in the detergent industry, where they serve primarily
Amine salts
used as softeners, re-wetting and antistatic and antibacterial finishing
agents and have proved to be successful levelling agents and
retarders in acrylic fibre dyeing. Other applications include the use as
acid inhibitors, emulsifiers, dispersing agents, vulcanization accelerators,
antistatic agents and auxillaries in paint applications.
Amine ethoxylates
Their specific surface active properties make the Genamin ® grades
a valuable basis and additive for the chemical technical industry.
They can be used to manufacture textile auxiliaries (e.g. products
for dyeing), as mineral oil additives, in crop protection products and
pesticides, and as raw materials for cosmetics and adhesives.
24
Genamin ® grades can be combined with all types at nonionic and
cationic surfactants, and are compatible with anionic products on
a case-by-case level. The Genamin ® grades are resistant to most
chemicals at typical concentrations used and insensitive to water
hardness.
Copolymerizable Emulsifiers
Classic anionic and non-ionic emulsifiers stabilize the emulsion by
physical interaction. However, these surfactants desorb at high shear
forces or because of electrolytes which then in turn leads to coagulation
of the latex particles.
In order to avoid migration and nest formation in the polymer film,
Nonionic copolymerizable emulsifiers
Anionic copolymerizable emulsifiers
Clariant has developed a range of copolymerizable emulsifiers, which
chemically bond to the polymer, inhibiting migration in the film and
resulting in higher latex stability. Additionally, freeze-thaw stability
and shear stability are significantly improved. The products are also
less water absorbant and enable hydrophobic coating surfaces.
