Epic and provocative,The Shadow King reworks Shakespeare’s timelessstory as a sprawling, blood-soaked tale of twoIndigenous families in Australia’s north. Probingour understanding of kinship, country and belonging, this majestic and physical contemporary retellingweaves a parable that echoes our nation’s historyand speaks to the current circumstances inIndigenous Australia.Told through a powerful combination ofShakespearean pathos with modern English,Aboriginal and Kriol languages, music anddance, The Shadow King brings together someof Australia’s foremost Indigenous performers, including the Territory’s own Tom E. Lewis(The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith), Jimi Bani(Mabo), Kamahi Djordan King (Wulamanayuwiand the Seven Pamanui) and Frances Djulibing(Ten Canoes, Wrong Skin) along with the musicaltalents of Bart Willoughby (Yothu Yindi) andDjakapurra Munyarryun.Working across cultures and generations,The Shadow King is an unmissable theatricalevent of a scale and significance to match theland on which it’s made.
