RESURRECTION BULLETIN • F ALL 2011
Editor’s Introduction
Welcome back to Fall with all its colours and warmth
and peace. I hope that your summer was a time for
some rest, relaxation and a time to enjoy each other. But
even as the Fall invites us to look forward to a journey of
new beginnings, we take a look back to thank God for all
that the summer has given us and for those who journey
with us.
As we look over the summer we remember (and love again)
those who walked with us. Our 9 Jubilarians of 25, 40, 50
and 60 years have been wonderful signposts for us through
their ministry. We thank them for their gift and accept their
invitation to continue the journey with them.
Seminarian Frank Brick, CR professing vows, accompanied
by Fr. Charles Fedy, CR his Novice Director
Fathers Clarence Hauser and Norman Choate took a
different walk as God called them to the fullness of the
Resurrection. Their footprints are signs of God’s love
and compassion for so very many people. We might not
remember always what they said and did, but we will not
forget how they made us feel.
On August 15th of this year our novice, Frank Brick,
professed his First Vows in the Congregation. It was a special
day for Frank, his family and for our religious Community.
He will continue his studies for the priesthood.
In February of next year our Deacon, Michal Kruszewski,
will be ordained to the priesthood in our Congregation.
He will be ordained in Poland and then return to Canada
to minister here. Your prayers and support of Michal and
others make a difference. You walk with us.
We also want to introduce you to Fr. Toby Collins. Fr. Toby
has been asked to accept the “job” of Vocation Director for
the Congregation. It is a ministry to walk with our young
people as they discern their calling, their vocation to the
priesthood and religious life.
Tanzania is our newest Mission area, along with Bolivia,
Bulgaria and Brazil. Our International General Chapter
(meeting) was held in Rome this summer and the mission in
Tanzania was given high priority within the Congregation.
Anyone want to go to Tanzania? You are welcome to visit.
On September 25th we hosted an APPRECIATION
RECEPTION for lay people who have ministered with us
in our parishes. Thank you to all of you who have walked
with us, gifted, supported us and prayed for us. Thank you
for sharing God’s blessings with us. We are indeed very
grateful for you.
BULLETIN • FALL 2011
2
Our Vocation Director
This past July Fr. Toby Collins, CR was asked to be our
Vocation Director. His ministry is to walk with our young
(maybe not all young) men as they discern their calling
(vocation). Here is a little background for you.
Fr. Jim: Fr. Toby, share a little about yourself with us.
Fr. Toby: I am a Kitchener native, although I
was born in Stratford. I am the third
eldest in my family. My Mom and Dad
instilled in us strong family values that Fr. Toby Collins, CR
they themselves lived out. Mom was
a warm, loving person and held down the “home fort” while
Dad worked as a bank manager. They complemented each other
very well.
Fr. Jim: What was your education background?
Fr. Toby: I went to St. Jerome’s and St. Mary’s High Schools. I did well
academically and was good in sports. I wasn’t sure what I wanted
to do but at Laurier I found a great interest in Geography and
Philosophy. After working for an insurance firm I discovered
landscaping which became my profession.
Fr. Jim: What changed your direction?
Fr. Toby: I realized that maybe there was more to life than landscaping.
I felt an attraction to the potential of priesthood and religious
life. I was doing landscaping at St. Louis Parish (Waterloo) and
there found I had a passion for helping people.
Fr. Jim: What attracted you to the Resurrectionists?
Fr. Toby: I liked how this community worked together to transform lives.
I felt that I was able to be part of something that would make a
difference in the lives of others. At the same time I felt a deeper
awareness of God in my life and around me.
Fr. Jim: Where did you go from there?
Fr. Toby: I entered the Congregation, took my vows when I was 31. With
ordination to the Diaconate, I found that I enjoyed what I was
doing and where I was able to make a difference in the lives of
others.
Fr. Jim: What, in particular, sparked your attention?
Fr. Toby: I looked to our young people as a source of great hope. Talented,
creative youth have so much to offer that could change the world.
I wanted to invite them to share those gifts.
Fr. Jim: How do you see your “new” ministry and your dream in regard to
this new ministry?
Fr. Toby: My first call is to be with the youth of today, wherever they may be.
I want to encourage them to look at the priesthood and religious
life as an opportunity to serve both God and the Church. But
I don’t want to do this alone. I hope that people who read this
will widen their own horizons and encourage our youth to
accept the challenge of the Spirit to make a difference.
Fr. Jim: You can get in touch with Fr. Toby by visiting the Vocations
New Beginnings in our Tanzanian (East African) Mission
Fr. Andrzej (Andrew) Duda, CR
Three novices in Tanzania: John Zephrenne, Mosses Katikiro
and Michael Juma
It’s almost ten years since the first CR came to Tanzania. Since
then we have always hoped to attract local candidates and
to be able to organize for them a good formation program.
With the former we didn’t have much trouble. God blessed
us, and every year there were young people asking about our
community and showing their willingness to join us. The
bigger problem was with the latter, organizing a formation
program, or rather having formation personnel. Right now
there are only three CRs working in Tanzania. Sometimes
there were four of us, and sometimes only two. Also, we
are running two big parishes in two different dioceses.
Nevertheless, we have been trying. Once we accepted a
candidate from Nigeria. Another time we accepted a youth
from Arusha, Tanzania. But it didn't work out with either
of them.
In January of last year we accepted two aspirants who
wanted to become religious brothers, and we sent them for
a two-year catechetical course. One left a few months later,
another, Michael Juma is still with us.
This past June in Rome there was a General Chapter of our
Congregation. There was big interest in our Mission, many
discussions about it, and many words of encouragement.
Finally, our new Superior General, in agreement with the
Extended General Council, decided that we should start
a formation program this year. The postulancy program
started August 15, 2011, and the novitiate program one
month later, September 15th.
When the General Chapter was taking place in Rome, we
organized a vocation workshop here in Tanzania. Twenty
three young men attended. So, after the decision of starting
a formation program was made, we were able to choose three
of them: two who wish to become religious Brothers and one
for priesthood.
We decided that the entire initial formation should take
place here, in Tanzania. For both the postulancy and
novitiate programs we chose our Kahangala parish in the
archdiocese of Mwanza. That parish was started and was run
by the Missionaries of Africa, the so-called White Fathers.
It was there that they used to have there their novitiate
and philosophical studies house. But they left Kahangala
several years ago. Since 2008 the parish has been run by
Resurr
the Congregation of the Resurrection. There are houses,
B U L L E T
classrooms, a chapel, and a lot of space, making it a very
suitable place for our purpose. Fr. Andrzej Madry, CR, the
superior of our Tanzanian Mission, is also pastor of the
Kahangala parish. Fr. Andrzej Duda,CR will join him there
in the northern part of Tanzania, and will be the director of
formation. Fr. Maciej Braun, CR will remain alone at the
parish in Butiama. But we hope that he will not be alone for
long, that soon some other CR will come and join him.
Our candidates and hopefully future Resurrectionists are as
follows: Michael Juma, is from our Butiama parish. Last year
he started the two-year catechetical course, and he will finish
it and graduate during the postulancy program. He wants to
be a religious Brother. Another candidate, Mosses Katikiro
is from Musoma, Tanzania. He, too, wishes to become a
religious Brother.
The third candidate is John Zephrenne. He comes from our
Kahangala parish, but his family is from Musoma. He wants
to be a religious priest in our Congregation.
We are going to start something new, a CR formation
program for our African candidates. It’s quite a big challenge.
But we know that our Risen Lord, who called us to this
community, and who sent us to Africa, will also strengthen
us and guide us in this new and very important task. We rely
also on your prayers. Be assured that we need and appreciate
them very much.
IN APPRECIATION (editor’s note)
In my own Mission ministry I had the opportunity
to be on Easter Island. There, at the end of the school
year (such as it was) the students would bring a gift
to the teacher, a sign of gratitude. Some could afford
more than others. One young boy, from a poor family,
brought the teacher a small box in which there was a
beautiful piece of coral. The teacher, knowing he had
little resources, thanked him and asked where he got it.
He replied that it was from the ocean side of the Island.
She was astounded that he had walked so far, and she
mentioned this to him. His response was so much like
yours, good readers – “the walk is part of my gift.”
Gratitude is to remember that every gift of oneself often
comes with a long walk, and the walk is part of the gift.
We thank you, good readers, for walking with us, for
being a gift to us.

Partners in Mission –Appreciation
Reception
I N
On Sunday, September 25th, there was a liturgical service
and reception to recognize the many lay people who partner
with the Resurrectionists in the various parishes in which we
minister.
Fr. Sam Restivo, our
provincial leader gave a
short homily. Excerpts
from it are below:
“We, the baptized, in
our own unique way,
share in Jesus’ work of
creating a culture of
justice, mercy, and faith
Liturgical Service
in our respective local
faith communities.
“The Resurrectionists have always had a very special place
in their hearts for the laity. Why? Primarily, because the
founder of the Congregation, Bogdan Janski, was a lay
person—he lived religious vows of poverty, chastity and
obedience before God and his brothers in community – but
was never ordained a priest. He died only 4 years after he
founded the Congregation.
“His vision was to transform an entrenched secular culture by
the gospel of Jesus Christ. So, it is not surprising to discover
in our Constitutions, a strong emphasis and a clear mandate
to every Resurrectionist to collaborate with the laity. Article
196 reads as follows: ‘As Resurrectionists, we will work with
the laity in furthering God’s mission in the Church and in
Society.’”
For the next part of the service,
Fr. Sam invited Tracy Weber, a
parishioner and Music Minister at St.
Agatha Parish, St. Agatha, to speak
on behalf of the laity who minister
with us in the various parishes. Tracy
Weber shared some of her lighter
personal experiences with the CR
priests and brother who have served
at St. Agatha Parish since she was in Fr. Sam Restivo, CR
elementary school. Below are excerpts from her talk.
“All of us present here today have personal connections,
stories and relationships with our parish leaders, and
each of our personal connections with the priests/
brothers from the Congregation of the Resurrection are
unique and meaningful. We have been blessed with this
“partnership.” They have entered into relationship with
us, to lead us, to serve us, to be our partner and share in
Jesus’ mission.
• F ALL 2011
“It is so very valuable that we, the
laity, acknowledge our partnership
with the clergy, and the important
role they play in our lives and the
important role we play in their lives.
We share in the role of carrying
out GOD’S mission of “making
disciples” of others. We share in
the clergy’s role of serving others,
Mrs. Tracy Weber
as well as welcoming, leading and
encouraging our other brothers and sisters to join in each and
every day.
“God has the church – his leaders like our Resurrectionist
priests and brothers, as well as all of us to bring out his ideals
and visions for the world. There was a time in the history of
our church that we played more of a passive role, and the
clergy did the work. We, the laity, sat back respectfully and
observed; thankfully there have been healthy changes in our
church and we have shifted in a new direction, a direction
where we are called to partner with the clergy to actively
carry out the mission of Jesus. We are called by name and
sent as a sign of God’s presence in the world. We are called
to be actively involved; no longer on the sidelines, but now
actively sharing our time, treasure and talents. That is most
likely why you are sitting here at this wonderful celebration
today, because more than likely you have shared one or more
of these three things (time, treasure and talent) generously
on many occasions.
Group from St. Francis Church, Kitchener
“It is a great honour that we share this partnership, and we
must continue to nurture it in all of our parishes, so that
we can continue to carry out HIS MISSION. I know that
I speak on behalf of the laity present here today when I say
from my heart that we all feel so richly blessed to be fed
daily/weekly/yearly by some of the most talented teachers
and greatest disciples ever to walk the earth – our Priests and
Brothers from the Congregation of the Resurrection. Thank
you for entering into partnership with us as well as selflessly
accepting HIS call to lead us.”
