It is closeto all major amenities.Howard College is situ<strong>at</strong>ed in the vibrantcosmopolitan coastal city <strong>of</strong> Durban,renowned for its beaches and the MosesMabhida Stadium. Howard College is close toa number <strong>of</strong> shopping centres and entertainmentspots, as well as being about 10 minutesfrom the beach.The Medical campus <strong>of</strong>fers hands-on,problem-based, practical and relevant trainingto those interested in pursuing the MBChBprogramme. The campus is only ten minutesfrom Durban’s city centre. The CAO is acentral <strong>of</strong>fice th<strong>at</strong> handles applic<strong>at</strong>ions to most universities in the province <strong>of</strong> <strong>KwaZulu</strong>-N<strong>at</strong>al.The CAO is for first-time South African applicants applying for undergradu<strong>at</strong>e programmes<strong>at</strong> <strong>UKZN</strong>. <strong>UKZN</strong> – INSPIRING GREATNESSFINANCINGYOUR STUDIESLoans and Financial Aid<strong>UKZN</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers very limited financial assistance to students whose combined family incomeis less than R 150 000 a year. It is generally <strong>of</strong>fered in the form <strong>of</strong> a loan which must bepaid back, with interest, after leaving the <strong>University</strong>. A portion <strong>of</strong> the loan may beconverted to a bursary if the student passes all modules in a degree. After the first yearexamin<strong>at</strong>ions, bursaries may be <strong>of</strong>fered to academically deserving students who havepassed 100% <strong>of</strong> their registered courses with a 65% or gre<strong>at</strong>er degree average andwhose family gross income is less than R 150 000 per annum.If you require financial assistance, makesure you indic<strong>at</strong>e this on the CAO Applic<strong>at</strong>ionForm. Your applic<strong>at</strong>ion will be consideredand financial aid applic<strong>at</strong>ion formswill be mailed to you if you are provisionallyawarded financial aid. <strong>UKZN</strong> – INSPIRING GREATNESSACCOMMODATIONThere are on-campus and <strong>of</strong>f-campus residences, but accommod<strong>at</strong>ion is limited.Alloc<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> rooms is based on need, academic potential, ability to pay and distance fromhome. Unfortun<strong>at</strong>ely, it is not possible to alloc<strong>at</strong>e rooms to all applicants and you maytherefore have to find yourself accommod<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong>f-campus.EdgewoodResidence accommod<strong>at</strong>ion is available onEdgewood campus. Both c<strong>at</strong>ering and selfc<strong>at</strong>eringoptions are available. A total <strong>of</strong> 631students are housed in 11 residences oncampus. An additional five fl<strong>at</strong>s housing fivestudents each are available for postgradu<strong>at</strong>estudents.Howard College &Medical campusOn-campus residencesThe <strong>University</strong> residences for Howard Collegeand Medical campus in Durban accommod<strong>at</strong>eapproxim<strong>at</strong>ely 2 162 students. Competitionfor places is keen and it is not possibleto accept all applicants. Residences aregrouped into two halls, namely Charles SmithHall and Albert Luthuli Hall.Charles Smith Hall comprises 12 individualresidences close to the main academic buildings,banks, shops and Medical campus. Allresidences have access control, loungesand television rooms, intercom systems, callboxes and parking spaces. All residencesare self-c<strong>at</strong>ering, while a cafeteria facility isavailable for students.Limited accommod<strong>at</strong>ion for postgradu<strong>at</strong>estudents is <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>at</strong> Scully House andPostgradu<strong>at</strong>e House.Off-campus residencesSt Hillier is a mixed-gender residencewhich is comprised <strong>of</strong> fully furnished two/three bedroom fl<strong>at</strong>s. Each student has asingle bedroom. Occupants share a lounge,kitchen and b<strong>at</strong>hroom. A laundry facilityand parking are available. St Hillier is situ<strong>at</strong>edopposite Queensmead Shopping Mallin Umbilo and is a few minutes’ walk fromthe Medical campus. It is on a bus route toHoward College campus.The JV Smit Residence has 90 large singlerooms with entertainment and study roomsas well as tennis courts. C<strong>at</strong>ering, laundryand parking facilities are available. It is closeto the Medical campus and is on a bus routeto Howard College and the city.PietermaritzburgApproxim<strong>at</strong>ely 1 640 students are accommod<strong>at</strong>edin residences. About a third <strong>of</strong> thestudents registered stay in one <strong>of</strong> the fourhalls <strong>of</strong> residence. The Student Housinghelpdesk can be contacted for assistancewith <strong>of</strong>f-campus accommod<strong>at</strong>ion.14


STUDY AT <strong>UKZN</strong>Petrie HallIt is a cluster <strong>of</strong> residences for mainly firstand second-year female students. The threelarge residences are Eleanor Russell Hall,<strong>University</strong> Hall and Lodge, and are situ<strong>at</strong>edclose to the Science Block, Administr<strong>at</strong>ion,Student Services, the library andtennis courts, shops, post <strong>of</strong>fice and banks.A student committee ensures the smoothrunning <strong>of</strong> student life in all residences.William O’ Brien Hall ResidenceThis is a male residence which is situ<strong>at</strong>edon the main campus. It consists <strong>of</strong> singlerooms distributed over six blocks, withcommunal kitchens. Extra-mural activitiesare well c<strong>at</strong>ered for via the residence sportsprogramme, senior and junior lounges, alarge communal games room, and a visitors’reception lounge.
