year-old city and the romantic Saale valley.
Halle is worth a visit!
The city in central Germany, in the heart of Europe,
can look back on 1200 years of history and has something
special for every visitor from Handel to Halloren
and from Early Renaissance to the Enlightenment. It is
a musical and poetic paradise and a hub of industry
and commerce. The Burg Giebichenstein and
Moritzburg – the oldest and newest castles on the banks
of the Saale – as well as the famous Francke institutes,
the Market Church and the bell tower on the market
place are all evidence of a rich cultural and artistic history.
Come and admire significant archaeological finds
including the internationally renowned Bronze Age
"Sky Disc of Nebra" which is on display in the state
museum as a prehistoric relic, and the 50 million-yearold
fossil horse in the Geiseltal museum. Alternatively
enjoy attractive excursions through dreamy gardens,
river scenery or industrial landscapes.
The Cosmopolitan George Frederic Handel was born
in Halle in 1685. Powerful impulses from his birthplace
accompanied him on his travels: his Lutheran-influenced
grammar school education; "the various types of
notation" in the music of other countries, which he had
studied in the Market Church under Friedrich Wilhelm
Zachow, his post as organist at the Cathedral in wich
Huguenots from France and the Palatinate congregated
for Reformist church service; and the spirit of the
Early Enlightenment at the newly founded Friedrich's
University where Handel was enrolled.

The HANDEL festival has
taken place in Handel’s birthplace
in Halle an der Saale at
regular intervals since 1922,
and annually since 1952.
The Handel House, in wich

the composer was born, in the centre of Halle,
is internationally recognised by professionals as
the centre for the cultivation of Handel and further
research. During the major festival in
Saxony Anhalt, the house is the focal point for
art, culture, science and unusual encounters.
The festival originated with the
revival of Handel’s operas.
Today, these works still take
pride of place on the festival
programme. Currently preparations
are underway for the
65th HALLE OPERA HOUSE
production, in wich the HALLE OPERA
HOUSE Handel Festival Orchestra plays the
Baroque master's works on historical instruments.
Performances of works by composers
working in Saxony Anhalt, living in close proximity
to Handel's birthplace with a spiritual
affinity with the composer, provide an interesting
enrichment to the festival. Authentic locations
including the Cathedral, Market Church,
the Handel House, or in the historical Goethe
Theatre in nearby Bad Lauchstädt all provide
authentic locations in wich international audience
can enjoy both new works and rediscoveries
works and a multidude of interpretational
styles.
And for those who see the festival as a chance to
discover the almost 1200-year-old city in central
Germany, there is a choice of numerous activities
such as themed tours of the city, exhibitions,
museum and gallery tours, or excursions into
the surrounding area.
The main aim of the Baroque festival is to transform
the city into a tourist magnet for visitors
from both nearby and further afield. Our international

Triumph of Time and Truth.
Myth and allegory in Handel’s music
300 years ago, George Frederic Handel completed
his work „Il Trionfo del Tempo e del
Disinganno“. The text is a theological dispute
concerning aspects of human choice. Here, as in
many other allegorical works by Handel, disputes
are held between love, belief, virtue and
pleasure; this basis allows the most colourful
effects to unfold, as is the case in this opera.
Frederic Chrysander, renowned Handel
researcher and editor of Handel’s complete
works more than 150 years ago, remarked of
this composition: “There is no other work by
Handel which displays his personality to us in a
more prepossessing manner.”
There are grandiose works within the thematic
context of myth and allegory which will form the
programmatic focal point of the Handel-Festival
in 2007.
Compositions deserving special mention include
the settings of the Apollo myth in Apollo e Dafne
or Acis and Galathea which Handel used on
three occasions as the basis of compositions, as
was also the case with The Triumph of Time and
Truth – initially during his early Italian phase
and later in England, probably under the influence
of the anthem tradition of Henry Purcell.
Other performances to be highlighted include
the choral works Semele and L’Allegro, il
Penseroso ed il Moderato with the three characters
representing happiness, pensiveness and
serenity, the opera Admeto and the music for
the play Alceste by Tobias Smollett and a whole
lot more.
Several concerts pursue the connecting links
between Handel and other composers such as
Purcell, Buxtehude, Bach, Telemann and
Erlebach.
