Position Title<strong>Locksmith</strong> <strong>III</strong>II.Position DescriptionUnder general supervision, to do skilled work in the installation, repair, adjustment, andreplacement of locks on lockers, doors and cabinets; to make keys; and to do related workas may be required. A major portion of the time of positions in this class is spentperforming skilled locksmithing work. Incumbents regularly carry out a wide range ofgeneral maintenance outside the locksmithing trade. As assigned, incumbents will performtasks in other trades at an unskilled and/or semi-skilled level as helper or independently.<strong>III</strong>.Example of Duties/ResponsibilitiesA. Installs new locks, repairs and opens locks, and changes lock combinations usinghand tools and equipment-EB. Disassembles locks and repairs or replaces worn tumblers, springs and other parts-EC. Shorten tumblers, using file, and inserts new or repaired tumblers into lock to changecombination-ED. Cuts new or duplicate keys, using key cutting machine-EE. Establishes keying system for new sites-EF. Sets up and maintains master key systems and maintains records and security ofduplicate keys-EG. Repairs panic bar and other exit hardware-EH. Makes estimates or labor and material costs for jobs-EI. Requisitions, orders and stores supplies and materials-EJ. Maintains gas, oil and maintenance areas by performing unskilled, semi-skilled duties-E(E) - EssentialIV.Minimum QualificationsKnowledge of:•Methods, tools, practices, parts, and types of equipment used in the trade of a locksmith•Construction and repair of various makes of locks•Variety of locks available and the best use for each type•Key code systems•Installation, adjustment, and repair of panic door exit devices and hydraulic door closuresand floor hingesAbility to:•Maintain and repair a variety of locks and related hardware•Set up master key systems and make master keys•Read blueprints and specifications•Operate key code and tracing machines•Use depth keys•Set up keying schedules•Keep simple records


•Analyze lock and hardware requirements and malfunctions•Select and order parts and supplies from catalogues•Estimate time and materials for small projects•Understand and carry out written and oral directions•Work effectively with others•Acts as <strong>District</strong> liaison between architect and vendors in relation to locks and relatedhardwareEducation and Experience•Education: Graduation from High <strong>School</strong> or equivalent•Experience: One (1) year of experience as a journeyman level locksmith or four (4) yearsof progressively more responsible experience in assisting in the repair, maintenance andreplacement of locks, keys, and related equipment.License•Possession of a valid California Driver’s LicenseWorking ConditionsEnvironment•Inside/outside work environment•Subject to adverse weather conditions and noise from equipment operation•Traveling from site to site to conduct work•Subject to school campus student noise•Exposure to fumes, dust and dirtPhysical Abilities•Strength: Heavy work - lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 100 pounds with frequentlifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds•Ability to see to read labels and operate equipment•Gripping/grasping tools, supplies and equipment•Climbing, twisting, bending at the waist•Stooping, kneeling•Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized equipment and tools•Reaching overhead and horizontally•Standing and walking for extended periods of time•Walking over rough or uneven surfaces•Ability to use foot controls•Lie on backHazards•Working with machinery having moving parts•Exposure to fumes, chemicals and dust•May be required to work alone at night•Ability to respond to emergency calls at night or on weekendsRevised: Negotiations 04/23/02 pjh
