GNI Leathermenvisit Guysers GaystayKim and Chris from Palmerston North, New Zealand, are regular yearly visitors to America’sGay Naturist International (GNI) Gathering. This 9-day-long, all-male nudist event held inPennsylvania hosts up to 800 men! We chat with with Kim and Chris (who have stayed with usa few times at Guysers Gaystay) about GNI, and about their time spent with us in Rotorua. We understand you are both avidnaturists. Tell us about why you enjoynaturism so muchNaturism just seems the most natural thing to do –without the inhibitions of clothes, we are all equal.True personalities have to shine through becausethere is no hiding behind designer labels and itdoesn’t matter what build you are, what nationalityyou are, or how big your bank balance is. We are alldifferent, and it is good to see not one of us is alike.Everyone is totally individual, and we believe thatis a good way to be. In some ways it makes usrespect our fellow men more and have a betterunderstanding for them. Plus it just feels niceand healthy to have sun on our entire bodies(summertime) and to relax and enjoy the companyof like-minded individuals whenever we can.Tell us a bit about GNI and the yearKim won Mr GNI LeatherIn 2012, I (Kim) won Mr GNI Leather in the USA.This was very special for me and for my partnerChris also. For 9 glorious days we got to meet and socialisewith hundreds of naked men at GNI, and also gotto indulge in our other passion – leather! – a greatcombination, and to do both on stage in front ofso many men was awesome. The GNI movementand the leather scene (particularly in America)are both very much about camaraderie andmutual admiration, especially amongst the leatherbrotherhood. Respect plays a huge part here.It was also the first time the Mr GNI Leathercontest had been won by someone not American, and so the leather studded sash left the USA forNew Zealand for 12 months.A huge responsibility was put on myshoulders to promote GNI when andwherever I travelled to, and to showoff the sash as much as possible, suchas at judging contests, gay fairs, publicappearances (as well as some privateones!).All in all, attending the GNI gatheringhas been a great experience, and onewe will never forget, and hope that itsexistence will only encourage more mento give naturism a try.Continued over...guysersgaystay.comGuysers Gazette 7

TourismThermal healingIf you live in New Zealand and are looking for a destination to escape the cold ofwinter, or if you are an international traveller coming to New Zealand during ourwinter season, no place is better than Rotorua to warm up and recieve the healingbenefits of the many thermal hot pools, mud spas and free geothermal rivers inand around the district. We’ve listed here our favorite spots for a hot soak...Polynesian SpaThe Polynesian Spa is located on theshores of Lake Rotorua overlookingSulphur Bay. It is a World Top 10 Spacomplex (as voted by Condé NastMagazine) consisting of severalbathing options; The Adult Poolswhere there are 5 different bathingareas and two types of thermal waterranging from 38 to 43 degrees C,the Lake Spa (although a little pricey)has 3 pools set in landscaped gardens, and the Private Pools (for clothingoptional bathing) four of which haveviews of the lake, although there is a30 minute time limit in these. The water comes from two springs; The Priest Spring has the perfectbalance of acidity to provide soothingrelief for tired muscles, aches andpains, and the Rachel Spring is alkalineand has a natural anticeptic actiondue to its sodium silicate content.Historically it was said that those thatswam in the Rachel Spring water wasblessed with ageless beauty. To testthis theory out you’ll just have to visitthe Polynesian Spa in Rotorua.Open daily 8am – 11pm.Last bathing entry 10:15pm.12 Guysers GazetteIssue 4 • Winter 2015

Waikite Valley Hot PoolsThe Waikite Valley Hot Pools are located25 minutes drive south of Rotoruanear Wai-O-Tapu. A hot soak here iswell worth it if you are combining yourjourney with a visit to see Wai-O-TapuThermal Wonderland. Although thesepools cater for families (and there isoften a lot of children here) there are afew adult only/passive bathing poolsto get away from all the splashing kids. There are also private pools availablefor clothing optional bathing (max 30minutes) and these all have a beautifulview of the rural landscape.Butchers PoolThis free public pool is situated onthe eastern side of Broadlands Road, approx 2 kilometres south of Reporoatownship (about 35 minutes drivesouth from Rotorua City). Butcher’s Poolfills from hot and cold internal mineralsprings and the water exits continuallyso is renewing and cleansing itself. There are particles of natural algae thatfloats in the water so if you prefer yourwater pristine and clear this may notbe the pool for you. It is locatedon the Wai-O-Tapu Loop Road justdown from the Wai-O-Tapu ThermalWonderland ticket office. You can findjust the right temperature that you likeby sitting where the two streams mix.If you venture too far up the hot streamit can be too hot to sit in depending ifthere has been a lack of rainfall. Bring yourswimwear as it is not very naturist inclinedthese days (unless you go early eveningonce the bulk of people have left). The ‘secret, secret spot’This thermal stream and hot waterfallis one of the few best-kept local secretsin the Rotorua area. As this place is notmentioned in every guide book you arealmost guaranteed to have this placeto yourselves. It is very private set inamongst the bush and is ideal for naturistau naturel bathing. The 3 meter highwaterfall provides an excellent vigorousshoulder massage. The bathing poolbelow it is shallow and has a slightlymuddy and stoney bottom. Again, if youare fussy about the clarity of water youlike to bath in, this place might not be foryou. Natural thermal bathing doesn’t getany more natural than this! With any natural thermal stream you mustkeep your head above water as there aremicrobial hazards that are potentiallydangerous if you get water up your nose.Because this spot is a local secret we arenot going to give instructions on how toget there in this public forum. Going down! After opening in August 2012, Rotorua Canapoy Tours has workedits way up to being the No.1 attraction in the Rotorua district(as voted on TripAdvisor). Come and experience their 3-hour ecoadventure as you zipline over untouched virgin New Zealand forest. After gearing up for a harness fitting and safety briefing at the RotoruaCanopy Tours Headquarters you will then be transported out to theirsecret forest north of Rotorua City. Accompanied by highly trainedguides your eco tour begins with a walk through the forest containing500 year old giant trees, monster tree ferns and native birds. Before Canopy Tours was developed there was very little bird life thatcould be spotted in the forest due to the pests that were present such asrats, possums and stoats. Now, due to their extensive trapping program, the pests are gone and the bird life has returned in abundance. The forest is brought to life as you learn about its history, its inhabitantsand the conservation dream that is driving it all.Join Canopy Tours as they take you on a wild journey of over 1.2 kilometresof ziplines, tree-to-tree swing bridges, walking trails and tree topplatforms as high as 22 metres above the forest floor. The highlight for many is the jaw-dropping 220 metre “Tui Song” zipline(pictured) where you take a leap of faith off a platform built high in thecanopy of a 500 year old Rimu tree and fly across the tree tops landingon a platform hidden in the distance.Take in the sights, sounds and smells of the forest from a uniqueperspective. Pohutu Geyser‘The big splash’20 Guysers GazetteIssue 4 • Winter 2015

One of the most photographed attractions in all of Rotorua is the legendary Pohutu Geyser, recently ranked one of the world’s top 5 geysers by Lonely Planet. The Pohutu Geyser is located within thegrounds of Te Puia which is part of theWhakarewarewa Thermal Valley. The smaller Prince of Wales Feathers Geyser(which is seen in the photo on the far left)erupts first followed by the impressive PohutuGeyser which reaches heights of up to 30 metres(100 feet) and erupting up to 20 times a day.Unlike Wai-O-Tapu’s Lady Knox Geyser whichis induced with a surfactant daily to make iterupt at a given time, the Pohutu Geyser eruptsnaturally on its own accord. The process begins when groundwater startsto boil and creates steam due to intense heatfrom molten rock underground. Pressure buildsinside Pohutu’s underground chamber until iteventually forces its way up through the geyservent erupting hot water and steam skyward.Once Pohutu Geyser has calmed down, thechamber fills with water again and the processstarts over. The Māori word Pohutu means “big splash”or “explosion”, and its easy to see why it gotits name! It is also the largest geyser in theSouthern hemisphere.Your entry ticket into Te Puia not only gets youup close to the Pohutu Geyser, but you also get achance to have a look at the New Zealand MāoriCarving School (where Māori boys learn fromthe Master Carvers) and the Weaving School forMāori girls. Depending on the time of day yougo or the ticket you buy, you can either havea ‘Steam Box’ lunch which is food you selectthat is cooked in a natural thermal steam vent,or the Te Pō Evening Combo where you get towatch a Māori cultural show followed by aMāori hangi dinner (food cooked in the groundover hot rocks and embers).Book your Te Puia experience through us atGuysers Gaystay and save 10% off the ticketprice! https://guysersgaystay.com qguysersgaystay.comGuysers Gazette 21

Club SceneA blast from the pastBetween 1995 and 2003 Peter (aka DJ Woody, now co-host of Guysers Gaystay) was aresident DJ working for Wellington’s previous gay haunts; Sanctuary, Caspers and Ruby Ruby.Peter also DJ’ed at several of Wellington’s yearly gay raves such as (the now historic) Devotion,Deus and UniQ parties, and at Barbarella Bar in Rotorua (which sadly has long closed).Shortly after I came out, when I was about 19 yearsold, I started going to gaynightclubs in Wellington.I remember dancing like crazyto tracks like 2 Unlimited’s“No Limits” and thinking tomyself “wow, I’d love to be aDJ playing music like this”.So a few years later I savedup and bought two PioneerCDJ500’s and a mixer. At thetime I was one of only twoDJ’s in Wellington who hadCD mixing decks – all theother DJ’s in town said to me“mixing with CD’s won’t takeoff – vinyl is the only way to go”.But I ignored them.Within a very short timenearly all the DJ’s hadconverted to using CD mixingdecks because the clarity ofthe sound was so much betterand mixing with CD’s becameso easy.Nowadays of course, it’s allMP3’s saved onto a laptop, which I guess saves having tolug a heavy CD case around. But to me, dance music thesedays has become faceless, churned out with no realthought or passion, anduntactile by not having aphysical product to hold.If anyone is familiar with theclub scene of the late 90’s/early 2000’s, much of the dancemusic that was played at thattime are now consideredto be ‘club classics’ – almosttimeless tracks that could stillbe dropped into any set thesedays and still fill a dance floor.Much of the ‘cheesy’ dancemusic these days does thecircuit for a month or twoand is quickly forgottenabout, often without anyoneknowing (or remembering)who actually produced it,or what it was called.Call me old fashioned, butbecause of the internet, all theindependent record labels thatwere producing some of thebest dance/house musicaround slowly went out ofbusiness because they were nolonger making any money fromCD/record sales. This is becausepeople (DJ’s) were uploadingthe music onto the internet forany DJ around the world todownload for free (convenient, but very damaging to smallindependent record labels). Thus, dance music producershad to change the way musicwas sold – hence today we haveiTunes and other websiteswhere people have to pay forthe individual tracks orcompilations they download. For a little trip down memorylane (for those of you whomay remember the good olddays), I have listed here someof my favorite all-time ‘clubclassics’. Click on the links Ihave provided and transportyourself back to the ultimateera of club music.22 Guysers GazetteIssue 4 • Winter 2015

Atticus FinchAtticus Finch Restaurant in the Eat Streat complex on TutanekaiStreet is another of Rotorua’s popular dining experiences.Always busy and full of life, Atticus Finch offers innovative andflavoursome sharing plates where you can order as much or as littleas you want depending on your appetite. If you are looking for a restaurant that is definitely not ‘run of the mill’,Atticus Finch certainly delivers! Some of the dishes we have personally tried include the slow-roastedlamb with tzatziki, roasted eggplant, peppers and chickpea salad, the amazingly tasty braised beef short ribs with parsnip puree, their folded Chinese steam buns with pulled pork and apple slaw, the delicous fried Haloumi cheese with lemon oil, rocket, chargrilledcourgettes and beans, and their lime marinated fish with coconut. You cannot miss trying one of their fantastic cocktails made withfresh herbs and fruit. If you love the heat of chili try their eye-browraisingLemongrass & Chili Mojito (White Rum muddled with freshlemongrass, red chili, lemon wedges, mint and soda).
