research. The second semester explores how
the broader community responds to some
of the issues raised in semester one, with
a focus on interpersonal and intercultural
communication. At the completion of the
subject students will have been introduced
to the facts, concepts and principles of
behavioural science that they need to
continue on to any of the humanities degrees
at The University of Queensland.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
This subject aims to develop a solid
background in the computer fundamentals
that are assumed of undergraduate students
across all disciplines, whilst providing a
robust foundation for students intending
to pursue Information Technology degrees.
Topics covered include image manipulation,
web coding, information systems and
programming. There is also a theory
element, which gives students a foundation
in computer basics, number systems and
the social issues related to the widespread
use of computers. There is a large practical
component, which involves students creating
individual projects to demonstrate their skills.
RESEARCH
Research — Arts: This elective stream
is focused on engaging students in an
independent study approach. Students are
given the possibility in the first semester
to explore several different areas from the
Arts field, and in the second semester they
can choose an individual research project.
They are instructed in scientific research and
writing methods, which they can develop for
use in the completion of assignments within
undergraduate university courses.
Research — Architecture: This elective
stream introduces students to the design
and construction of buildings, through an
exploration of principles and techniques, as
well as giving an insight into architectural
theory, history and practice. Students are
provided with the opportunity to select
research topics as part of the reportwriting
process, so that they can acquire
an understanding of relevant concepts and
expand their vocabulary in a specialised area
of interest.
ASSESSMENT
Throughout the program academic
achievement is carefully monitored and
students are given regular feedback on their
progress. Students will have approximately

formal class time, students are expected to
study for at least 20 hours per week in their
own time.
Assessment depends on the subject, but
normally comprises of two examination
papers, one or two assignments to be
completed by a specified date during the
course, laboratory practical work if relevant
and seminar participation evaluation.
Final assessment will take into account all
of the above. All subjects are graded on a
7 point scale where:
7 High distinction 85-100%
6 Distinction 75-84%
5 Credit 65-74%
4 Pass/Competent 50-64%
3 Low Pass 47-49%
2 Fail 25-46%
1 Low fail 1-24%
Students must achieve a minimum Grade
Point Average (GPA) of 4 to enter any
undergraduate course at UQ. If a student
achieves a pass/competent grade or higher in
all 5 subjects they will receive the nationally
recognised qualification Certificate IV in
University Preparation.
SUPPORT SERVICES FOR FOUNDATION YEAR
STUDENTS
SUPPORT SERVICES
ENGLISH LANGUAGE
INSTRUCTION
The compulsory subject Academic English
for University Studies (AE) is specifically
designed to develop students’ academic
English while increasing their knowledge
of Australian culture. English Language
Assistance (ELA) provides extra tuition for
students who are either having difficulties
with English in their studies or require IELTS
test preparation classes, especially those who
need an IELTS score of more than 6.5 for
their undergraduate program at UQ. All ELA
teachers are fully trained TESOL teachers.
STUDENT COUNSELLING
Foundation Year counsellors provide caring,
experienced counselling and advice. Their
assistance is readily available throughout the
year for any problems whether they be of an
academic nature, English language related
or just issues relating to adjusting to life in
another country.
ACADEMIC CAREER AND
STUDY GUIDANCE
Student counsellors provide a range of
programs and support to help students
settle into their new academic and living
situations. Workshops are available for
students at the start of the year in areas
such as living on a budget, signing contracts
and accommodation options. There are also
sessions on presentation skills, assignment
writing and coping with exam nerves.
Counsellors play an important role in assisting
students to make sound decisions about
choices for undergraduate study as well as
their future career.
EXTRA TUTORIALS
If students experience difficulties in a
particular subject, the Student Counsellor
can arrange for extra tutorial support. These
are small group sessions that revise work
already covered but do not involve any extra
assessment. There is no charge for these
tutorials. In addition the Student Counsellor
can help locate an appropriate non-IES tutor
at a reasonable rate. IES does not charge for
this service.
INDIVIDUAL STUDY PLANS
The teachers and student counsellors work
together to identify students experiencing
academic difficulties which require greater
intervention strategies than is available in
the extra tutorials. These students are closely
monitored and assisted and their progress
is recorded via Individual Study Plans. These
plans are continued for the duration of the
Foundation Year or until the teachers are
confident the student no longer requires this
level of assistance.
GUIDANCE WITH UNIVERSITY
THE UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND
FOUNDATION YEAR ALUMNI
UQ is one of the best universities in Australia and the
number one university in Queensland. I chose to study
at UQFY because of its close association with The
University of Queensland. UQ has a great reputation
in Indonesia and I was proud to graduate from UQ
with a Bachelor of Information Technology in 2007.
In 2008 I was awarded a graduate scholarship at
Technische Universiteit Eindhoven in the Netherlands
and am currently pursuing a Masters degree in
Business Information Systems. In the future I am
planning to work in IT field but ideally want to work in
development, possibly for an NGO as I am interested in
helping people in need.
Amalia Sanusi INDONESIA
The best thing about studying at UQ was that I got a chance to

a beautiful and multi-cultural city, and UQFY provided us with an
excellent study environment. The facilities are great and the courses
I undertook were a foundation for my studies at university and my
future career! UQFY is an excellent place to study.
Most of all, I liked the fact that the program that I enrolled in at UQ
was not completely theory-based. It combined both the theoretical
and practical elements of IT. I enjoyed all the opportunities studying
at UQ had to offer and I can recommend UQFY without hesitation.
I completed the Foundation Year in 2004 and studied a
Bachelor of Economics at The University of Queensland,
which I finished in 2007. I am now working as a business
analyst for an economic consulting firm in Brisbane,
and my goal is to become a successful and respected
economist.
UQFY provided me with the necessary academic background to
prepare me for university. In addition, friendly teachers actively
engaged students to participate in classes. Resources, such as student
support services, were also made available, helping me navigate
through any difficulties. We could easily interact with teachers and
other peers thanks to the small class sizes.
My fondest memories are all of the social and cultural events
organised by UQFY throughout the year.
I regularly catch up with my friends from Foundation Year that are still

home. I hope to visit all of them in their home countries one day.
I was among one of the first
group of students to pass through
UQFY in 1998. I cannot forget
how caring, friendly and helpful
the teachers were when I was in
foundation year. As our year had
a smaller intake of students we
became a tight-knit group and
had a lot of good times together.

staff were caring, helpful and
dedicated teachers, I felt well
prepared when I finished my
studies and went on to study a

of Arts at UQ.

friends at UQFY, my university life
was even more enjoyable.

and am the Director of my own
export company. I enjoy the
challenges and the learning
experiences that this business
provides.
In the future I hope to expand my
company’s business and keep in
touch with many of my friends
from Foundation Year and UQ.
When I was preparing to study in

best foundation year program
in Queensland. As a Year 11
student in China, it was the
fastest way for me to become an
undergraduate student at UQ.

study and is full of opportunities
for employment and business.
UQFY helped me transition
from a non-English learning
background to undergraduate
study. I made lots of friends,
and together we completed a

and now all have careers in

I have been working full time
since August 2009, just one
month after graduation. I am
a Site Engineer for a principal
contractor for Coal Seam Gas
companies.
My next goal is to complete
a Professional Development
Program with Engineers Australia
and become a Project Engineer.
I would encourage other students
to study in Australia and believe
UQ foundation year is the best
way to start.

UQFY in February 2005, I joined
ICTE (Institute for Continuing
and TESOL Education) for 30
weeks to improve my English.
This was helpful too, as I was
able to become familiar with life

my foundation studies at UQFY.
At the end of Foundation Year,
I was awarded a scholarship
from the Faculty of Social and

Education dual degree at UQ.
I have been an ambassador for
the university, showing students

campus and talking to them
about my life in Australia.
I am now working as a
Secondary School Teacher in
Western Australia, but one
day I would like to return to
Queensland and teach there.
The friends I made at UQFY and
UQ will be some of the best
friends I have my whole life.
UQFY helped me understand the
social, economical, political and
historical background of Australia.
This inspired me to study Political

at UQ. I graduated from this
course in 2008.
If I had gone straight to
University without completing the
Foundation Year, I would have
found it very hard to adapt to
the different styles of teaching.
UQFY gave me that introduction
and showed me what my life at
university would be like.
Now I have started my own
company, which imports and
exports different products to and
from Australia. I am also studying

and very busy.
The best part of UQFY is meeting
a lot of interesting people from all
around the world and being able
to interact with them on a daily
basis over the duration of the
program. This is an opportunity
that not a lot of people have, even
if they travel overseas.
I graduated from UQFY in 2002

Performance at the Queensland
Conservatorium of Music. I am
now working with Opera Australia
in Sydney and performing in the
Pinchgut Opera.
At UQFY, I learnt how to adjust
to university-style education.
I discovered how to get the
most out of lectures, tutorials,
and workshops, and how to
supplement those classes with selfdirected
study and research.
The Foundation Year taught me
essential library skills and academic
writing techniques which helped
during my first year of university.
Lecturers and tutors are less
available at university level, and I
appreciated that UQFY provided
a smaller, more supportive and
approachable environment.
The Foundation Year also gave
me some time to adjust to the
Australian way of life, the climate
and the accent!
I feel very blessed to be able to do
something that I love for a living.
My goals for the future are to keep
learning and to help others who
hope to follow a career in this
industry.
My time at UQFY was great.
Learning was challenging but it
was also fun. I loved the vibrant,
multi-national culture. Many
of the friends I made at UQFY
became lifelong friends.
At UQ, unlike FY, lecturers
spoke fast and there were many
technical terms which made
understanding a lot harder.
If I had not studied at UQFY
first, I might have given up on
going to lectures. In addition,
the assignments and exam
structures at UQFY were very
similar to those at UQ, so I didn’t
experience any problems while
some of my Australian friends
did.
I have just completed my

Electrical Engineering. My goal is
to become a leader in the field of
Image and Signal Processing.
I am currently in Canberra
working for NICTA (National
ICT Australia) on a 3D plant
modelling project. After this,
I plan to apply for a PhD
scholarship to further my study.
UQFY helped me be prepared for
university study at UQ. We had
the chance to visit the science
labs at UQ so it was a lot more
familiar when I actually started my

Management in 2005. After
graduating in 2008, I went to
Sweden and I am now studying

The teachers at UQFY were
very supportive. They helped us
prepare for university by showing
us how to write reports in English
and how to run presentations in
front of other people, which were
a regular requirement in all of my
subjects at UQ.
In the next five years I am aiming
to graduate from my PhD and
work in the pharmaceutical
industry or another biomedicine
area. I’d like to combine my
studies in business management
with my biomedicine study and
I’m aiming to get a managerial
position in a pharmaceutical
company. It gives me a good
feeling to know that I am doing
something that might help people
in the future.
My time at UQFY in 2003 exposed
me to a life that I had never
known. It showed me that I could
focus and understand a university

Science at UQ prepared me for my
career as a Senior Officer for the
Agency for Science, Technology
and Research in Singapore.
My best memories from UQFY
are all of the activities, Friday

everyone.
Probably the biggest lesson I learnt
from Foundation Year is that
interaction with teachers is very
important. Also, the presentation
skills we learnt helped me when
I was in University. In fact, in
my current job, I am still using
the presentation skills that were
taught at UQFY.
In my current job, I interact with
many people from different
backgrounds, including high
profile personalities, senior
government officials and senior
company managers. No two days
are ever the same. In the long
term, I want to be successful
... wherever my career path
takes me.
