HOUSE OF THE MONTH by John Graham-Hart
1.
Green living
John Graham-Hart finds energy efficient, lovely homes
nwell, 6 Sea way, Middleton-on-Sea, weSt SuSSex
Now I’m as green as the next bod and think that, on balance, saving the
planet would be A Good Thing. However, every quarter, when my
energy bills come crashing unbidden through my letterbox to land
with a foundation-rocking thump on my doormat, my first thoughts are not,
alas, of the plight of polar bears in Kaktovik. My first thoughts are, shamefully,
of the effect these bills will have on my rock ’n’ roll lifestyle.
The truth is that keeping our lights on and frostbite at bay is an expensive
business so, it not only makes environmental sense, but also financial sense to
ensure that our homes are as energy efficient as possible. At present, we are not
doing a very good job.The average UK house has an Energy Efficiency Rating
of 49 out of 100, falling into Band E. Today, most poorly performing houses
can be refurbished to get a score of over 70 or into band C. Many can get well
beyond this into the 80s or 90s – bands B and even A – and when buying a
house the property details will give you not only the current score but a realistic
assumption of the scores a range of improvements could make.
So this month we are looking at houses with an energy rating of 70 or above;
houses that not only do their bit to ensure your energy bills are as modest as
possible but that our children’s children’s children – and the bears of Kaktovik
– will still have somewhere in this rather pretty little corner of the galaxy to call
their own.
BUSS MURTON advertorial
Attention landlords and tenants!
ASSURED SHORTHOLD TENANCIES
& THE DEREGULATION ACT 2015
Last October some important
changes to the law relating to
Assured Shorthold Tenancies
(ASTs) were made. Nowadays
most private tenancies are ASTs,
so many landlords and tenants
are affected by these changes.
These changes were brought in
because it was considered that
many landlords were using section
21 notices instead of dealing with
legitimate tenant complaints about
the condition of the property.
These rules do not apply to Wales
and only affect ASTs that began
on or after 1st October 2015 and
relate to section 21 notices (the
notice served which terminates
the tenancy) and the landlord’s
obligations to his/her tenants. Where
the new rules are not followed,
the landlord may be prevented
from evicting the tenant and may
not be able to serve a further
section 21 notice for 6 months.
New rules
Documentation required
at beginning of an AST:
A landlord must now provide
certain documents to tenants at
the beginning of the tenancy.
These documents are:
• The government booklet
“How to rent: the checklist
for renting in England”.
• Gas appliance safety certificate.
• Energy performance certificate.
Service of section 21 notice;
• A section 21 notice can only
be served after 4 months from
the beginning of the tenancy.
• A new prescribed form of
section 21 notice must be
used; this standard form
is available online.
• If the local authority serves a
health and safety improvement
notice then no section 21 notice
can be served for 6 months.
Complaint about the
property by tenant
• If the tenant makes a complaint
about the condition of the
property the Landlord must
respond within 14 days
stating what work he intends
to do and give a timescale
for doing the work.
• If the landlord fails to reply or
the reply is not adequate or
the Landlord serves a section
21 notice, then the tenant
can make a complaint to the
local authority who will then
inspect the property and can
serve a remedial notice or carry
out the remedial action. If this
happens then any section 21
notice served will be invalid
and no further notice can
be served for 6 months.
News, topical treats
and more...
How to create a stylish
hideaway in your garden
Early spring is the perfect time to start planning a garden
makeover. It’s exciting thinking about what changes you can make
to your outside space. Something to keep in mind is making sure
you move fast, so you can complete your project in plenty of time to
fully enjoy the summer.
One of the things that can make a huge difference to the time you
spend in the garden is to create a structure or shelter. This not only
adds an interesting visual element, but obviously has a use as a
handy outdoor room.
TV programmes like George Clarke’s ‘Amazing Spaces’ and ‘Shed of
the Year’ have broadened our minds to the potential of existing
structures like chalets, caravans, sheds and even shepherd huts, that
can be ‘up-cycled’ to make a quirky haven in the garden, where we
can relax, entertain friends and family, or spend time on our own
hobbies and pastimes.
However, not everyone has the time, money or imagination to
conceive of renovating a shed that’s already in situ, or making
something from scratch. Perhaps this is where the smart choice is
investing in a ready-made structure like the Retreat or the fantastic
new Curve from Jacksons Fencing.
The Curve is a sleek and simple structure - one continuous curve
arching gracefully from the ground. There’s no need for posts, with
this seemingly gravity-defying contemporary garden shelter. It’s
fastened securely to the ground with three strong steel blades that
are dug in on each side.
The generous interior space is big enough to set up a dining area,
leaving ample room for a chill out zone. This is enhanced by the
unusual effects produced by sunlight shining through the
horizontal slats, which creates a calming setting for relaxing in.
The clear polycarbonate sheets covering the panels, lend the
Curve a shower-proof quality, and this also adds some protection
from the wind.
If you are looking for something a little smaller the Retreat is
available in two styles; one with the original Venetian-style infill
panels, the same as Jacksons very popular panels of the same
name and the other version has the new woven infill panels,
which gives it a very different look (shown below).
As with all their products, Jacksons garden shelters are hand
made in England from Jakcured timber guaranteed for 25 years,
so you can enjoy them for many years to come. Find out more by
going to your dedicated page:
Editor’s
Letter
After the Oscars and the BAFTAs, it seemed only right to
continue the theme with a visit to a film producer’s home.
Emma Clarke has transformed a former coach house in
Herne Bay into a magnificent and stylish home, complete with
home cinema, of course. Our other home – a vast weatherboarded
house, surrounded by meadows – is a rags-to-riches
story in itself. So, sit back and enjoy a tour of each.
Now, with Mothering Sunday and Easter just around the
corner, it seemed like the perfect time to pass on some
mouth-watering cake recipes – courtesy of Juliets café in
Tunbridge Wells. Whether you’re a lover of Lemon Drizzle or
prefer a proper cream cake, they won’t disappoint. You can then
work on your best intentions by reading up on cardio fitness,
strength and flexibility on our health page.
Other regulars include Jo Arnell’s gardening piece, this month
on the first flower shoots of the season, and Sue Whigham on
growing microgreens and salads. Lastly, Jane Howard is more
self-sufficient than ever, rearing all manner of things at Cooper’s
Farm: animal, vegetable and deliciously edible. She’s even got
something growing in the fridge. You’ll never guess what it is...
Setting the scene has been Emma Clarke’s
professional role for many years. So, when the
opportunity arose to create her own, domestic
show-stopper, she was more than qualified – as
her magnificent home demonstrates...
43 www.wealdentimes.co.uk

Above: Emma’s B&B guests can relax in her pretty drawing room which overlooks the gravel driveway and raised vegetable beds in the front garden. Pale decor
and reflective, glittering treasures make the most of the light, which floods in from the kitchen though half-glazed sliding doors.
The Madras Club was built in 1832 and, as the
elderly brigadier and I sat having tea on the
hallowed verandah, nothing very much seemed
to have changed since that date. My host was Indian but
educated and trained at Eton and Sandhurst, in many
ways more traditionally English than I would ever be, and
had had a ‘glorious’ life serving in both the British and
Indian armies. He was now, however, a troubled man.
“It’s my sister,” he said sadly. “She keeps pointing
out – rather insensitively I feel – that I can’t last
forever. She says the time has come for me to begin
preparing myself for my next incarnation which
means a great deal of navel-gazing in uncomfortable
positions and endless pilgrimages to places that I’ve
taken great trouble over the last 80 years to avoid.
“But the real problem, you see,” he said, wistfully
buttering a crumpet, “is that I have no interest
whatever in returning as anything or anybody
else. I feel that this is the life that all my other
incarnations have prepared me for: my journey’s
end. This has been the one life I was always destined
to lead – the being I was always meant to be.”
And so, strangely, it can be with houses. Very
occasionally, I walk into a house that has had
myriad previous lives but they all seemed to have
served only to prepare it for one final reincarnation
Sparkling objects reflect the light. “I’m afraid I’m a magpie – if
something is shiny, I’m just drawn to it,” says Emma

45 www.wealdentimes.co.uk

Above left: Emma brought several pieces of oversized furniture back from the States, including this huge armchair-cum-chaise longue – which is perfectly
positioned for enjoying the drop-down cinema screen Above right: House plants and flowers bring life and colour to every room
– the life it was always destined to lead, the home
it was always meant to be. Such a house is Emma
Clarke’s Northwood Lodge near Herne Bay.
As its name suggests, the house was originally built
as a lodge to a country house. It also served as a
coach house and a number of family homes until the
1970s when it was bought by a family who stayed for
some 40 years – and did very little to the building
or décor for four decades. Then it met Emma.
Emma had been a senior executive at the UK Film
Council, personally overseeing the development
and production of over 60 award-winning feature
films and documentaries. She was based in west
London for most of her career but six years ago she
decided to make the break and bought a grade II
listed fisherman’s cottage in Whitstable. It needed
a total overhaul – and this is exactly what it got.
Emma was delighted with the final result. Then,
three years ago, her mother died and she felt she
needed a new project to distract her. “I wanted
a house that needed tons of work done and that
I could really make my own,” she says.
WINDOWS LTD
E ST. 1963

Above: A drop-down cinema screen is hidden between the huge oak beams of
the drawing room. Emma sometimes holds ‘Dinnerma’ evenings, where guests
enjoy select films and home-cooked food Right: One of Emma’s cats poses
underneath Sidney, an old photographic prop found in a junk shop and used
by Emma’s father who was a photographer. Her father’s work, including many
pictures of Emma, is displayed around the house
The minute she saw a picture of the lodge in an agent’s
window she knew she’d found her new project.
“It looked like a child’s drawing with a pointy
roof and pretty casement windows,” she says. “I
was immediately obsessed with it.” One of the big
attractions was a vast soaring studio room that once
housed the carriages and which still had a hatch to
the hayloft between the heavy oak beams. It was a
room that was destined to become a dramatic drawing
room and dining room – the heart of the house
and a space brimming with wonder and interest.
The first thing that hits you as you walk in is the
spectacular beamed ceiling, now bleached white. Also
vying for your attention is a terrific window at the far end
of the room – although ‘end of the room’ is not entirely
accurate; Emma has created an evergreen courtyard
outside which means that the room, as an experience,
ends beyond the glass. This window, in hand with two
more, and a half-glazed door along another wall, floods
the room with light which bounces, reflects and generally
has fun amid the mirrors, crystal and glassware.
In every room there is an antique mirror of beauty
and originality – often more than one – but the
vast eight-foot patinated mirror in the drawing

Above: The large open-plan kitchen is a mix of French and Scandinavian
style as well as being eminently practical; recycling bins are hidden under the
kitchen counter and a double butler sink occupies the central island.
Left: Each room includes plenty of space for books – including the kitchen.
Here, recipe books sit alongside horticultural manuals and foreign dictionaries
room is the star of a considerable show. She bought
it for this space, in this room, from McCully &
Crane in Rye even before she had exchanged.
“I can’t resist the patina on an old gilt frame or
the carvings on framed French designs,” she says.
At one end of the room is her dining table which, along
with the Scandinavian bench on one side, came from
Warehams in Whitstable. The rattan-bottomed dining
chairs on the other were liberated from R. G. Scott
Furniture Mart in Margate. The paintings came from
everywhere – an eclectic collection of old and new, from
unknown Victorians to artist friend Sadie Hennessy.
On one wall there is also what one at first takes as a
geometric abstract but is, in fact, an Indian board game.
As one browses from picture to picture, one is,
however, likely to overlook – or perhaps underlook
– Sidney. Sidney, or at least his head – hangs
Emma is not into fitted kitchens
and is more interested in beautiful
pieces that fit into the kitchen.
If they don’t fit, then the kitchen
is simply redesigned so that they do
ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE
Schmidt Kitchens helping to transform a new home
David and Raine wanted to transform their new home by knocking three rooms
together and making a modern kitchen and dining area.
The challenge was choosing
the right kitchen, with the
right look, the best quality,
at an affordable price. It also
had to work well functionally
in an open plan setting.
David says “to make it more
challenging, Raine had seen
her dream kitchen at the Grand
Designs exhibition. But it turned
out to be extremely expensive.
I took a look at the Schmidt
range and thought this could
be the answer and arranged an
appointment with Renee. I can’t
say that Raine was too keen on the
idea so we went to the Dorking
showroom in some trepidation!”
The visit could not have gone
better and in the space of a couple
of hours, there was a clear idea
of what the kitchen needed to
look like and an understanding
of how it could be achieved
within an agreed budget.
“Renee’s attention to detail, truly
listening and working with what
we were trying to achieve with
our project instilled confidence
and trust. She was able to get to
grips, not only with our ideas and
needs, but just as importantly
with how our kitchen would
impact on the whole project.”
“We wanted a fair bit of storage,
a feature island, and state of the
art accessories like the Quooker
hot tap. We also wanted our
lovely Miele appliances to look
at their best and be positioned
with functionality in mind. And
all with a sense of space so that
when we have guests, there
is ample room to cook and
socialise at the same time.”
“Schmidt’s combination of German
engineering strength with French
elegance does actually deliver in
practice and explains why they are
able to give 10 year guarantees
on furniture and 25 years on
internal mechanisms such as
drawers, runners and hinges.”
“The installation had to be timed
with our builders and all just before
Christmas. Thankfully, Schmidt
Dorking’s fitters were brilliant
and everything came together!
So we would highly recommend
Schmidt Dorking to anyone
seeking a high quality solution
for a new kitchen.”
Above: The ‘working end’ of the kitchen is a cook’s dream, with utensils and ingredients close to hand and an island unit – with half-oak-half-Carrara marble
surface – allowing Emma to talk to guests while preparing food. The warm yellow of the painted shelving units is a nod to Emma’s Norwegian heritage
high over the door to the hallway. He was, during
his first incarnation, a tiger and in his second,
one of Emma’s father’s photography props.
One is also likely to miss a projector high among
the beams and a retractable screen which together
turn the room into the perfect home cinema – and
venue for Emma’s ‘Dinnerma’ evenings when she
uses her wide experience of the film industry to
offer guests outstanding but relatively unknown
films with equally outstanding cuisine.
Emma now runs a B&B business at Northwood Lodge,
is featured on airbnb and Sawdays and welcomes guests
from all over the world. The drawing room/dining
room is her own private domain but, across the hall,
is another lovely drawing room which guests are free
to use. However, it is still very much an Emma room,
decorated and furnished with the same flair and care.
“It really was shambolic and very dark when I first saw
it,” she says. The solution was to knock out one of the
kitchen walls and add pretty half-glazed doors, with little
corners of reclaimed stain glass, that slide away into the
wall. This allows light to pour in from the kitchen where
Emma had already put in large windows and glazed doors
to the garden. She also added cornicing and a ceiling
rose and opted for Skimming Stone by Farrow & Ball for
the walls. “It has made a massive difference,” she says.
The open fire is now flanked by two built-in
bookcases with oversized shelves deep enough not only
to accommodate her extensive and varied library but to
leave space in front of the books for a blizzard of personal
As part of a radical redesign, Emma took out the old flooring and laid a
new floor made of reclaimed scaffolding boards. She also took out a wall and
brought light in with larger windows and French doors into the garden

53 www.wealdentimes.co.uk

Above left: There are bare floorboards throughout the house – in many cases stripped back and painted – then decorated with colourful rugs from around the
world Above right: Steps leading from the upstairs landing into Emma’s bedroom suite – which was once the hayloft above the carriage house
treasures ranging from a little set of tiny 1950s Dinky Toy
people to family pictures and other small shiny objects of
desire that catch and exchange the light. “I’m afraid I’m
a magpie – if it’s shiny I’m just drawn to it,” she says.
Over the fireplace is the inevitable and beautiful
mirror and, gracing the new ceiling rose, the equally
inevitable and beautiful chandelier, this one from Peter
Barrow in Faversham. A supporting but dramatic role
is played by two dazzling Venetian mirrored sconces
from India Jane either side of the door to the kitchen.
Emma doesn’t like carpets so the boards – in most
rooms of the house – have been stripped and then
painted. Colour is added by a wide range of rugs; here a
25-year-old Aubusson-style rug from Peter Jones.
Elsewhere her source has often been the online outlet,
Rug Store. Through into the kitchen, the flooring
changes to unpainted wood because, as part of a
radical redesign, Emma took out all the old flooring
and laid a new floor made from reclaimed scaffolding
boards. She also took out a wall, turning two small
rooms into one and bringing in the light with
larger windows and double doors to the garden.
Emma is not a fan of fitted kitchens and is more
interested in beautiful pieces that fit in a kitchen. If they
don’t, then the kitchen simply has to be redesigned so
they do. Here she has two great painted glass-fronted
cupboards and a chest of drawers – from Fontaine
Decorative in Margate – to accommodate and so she
redesigned the kitchen around them. Also needing
space was a superb but vast French mirrored armoire
Emma’s bedroom is a lovely vaulted chamber, decorated, aptly, in Farrow
& Ball ‘Skylight’ and with a seriously clever en suite bathroom
are double-sided mirrors, for privacy.
The effect is stunning
Above: One of the bedrooms is nicknamed ‘the Flower Room’ because it is
the more feminine of the two guest rooms and features various floral motifs.
The delicate blind is a piece of vintage Sanderson fabric Emma found online.
Left: Vases of flowers in soft pastel shades complement the classic white Laura
Ashley bed frame and freshly painted green chest of drawers
from Peter Barrow – and accommodated it was but it
clears the ceiling by less than a centimetre. The work
surface on the island is half oak and half Carrara marble,
reclaimed from a country house. The three small but
perfectly formed, cut-glass, hazelnut lights over the
white-painted dining table really are to steal – these
were bought many years ago from Hector Finch.
Upstairs there are three bedrooms and a stunning
bathroom. The first two bedrooms are for her B&B
guests. The first is what Emma thinks of as the Flower
Room because it is the more feminine of the two and
is set off by a pretty flower chandelier. Again, there
are two lovely mirrors, one peach and both with cutglass
surrounds and a French armoire with chickenwire
panels. The delicate blind is a piece of vintage
Sanderson fabric Emma found online. Beside the white
Laura Ashley bed stands an old tin garden table.
I did was paint the floor red. My friends thought I’d finally lost it,” says
Emma. Left: A fireplace at the foot of the bed, a gilt-framed mirror and
natural wood furniture work with the warm tones of the soft furnishings
The second guest bedroom is, says Emma, her nod to
Jane Eyre – the Red Room. “The first thing I did was to
paint the floor red,” she says. “My friends thought I’d
finally lost it but once it was done I could stand back
and see what we needed and how it was going to work.”
And work it has, of course.
Here the bed, from Feather & Black, is flanked
by chunky old tea container lights. However,
elegant though it is, it’s down-staged somewhat by a
wonderful day bed Emma found at Judy Greenwood
Antiques on the Fulham Road and re-covered in Ian
Mankin blue stripes, then more recently covered in
leopard print ‘for a bit of glamour’. She also chose
Mankin blue stripes for a nearby armchair.
Emma’s starting point for the bathroom wasn’t a
bathroom at all. It was just another room to which she
could bring beauty and interest, another opportunity
to please herself and others. So what we now have is
another wonderful room that guests might also find
61 www.wealdentimes.co.uk

Above: The main bathroom was not designed as a bathroom, as such, but was
simply another room to which Emma could introduce beauty and interest,
though it does include a luxurious roll-top bath and space-age walk-in shower
Right: Clues to Emma’s career in film and television, as well her father’s role
as a photographer are evident wherever you look. Here a classic Man Ray
image contrasts with more traditional touches
quite useful in that it has a beautiful free-standing
bath, loo, basin and elegant space-age shower.
Emma’s own bedroom one might expect to be
something special and, of course, it is. It started life
as the hayloft above what is now the drawing room
and the space hadn’t really changed from the days
when it was a store for horse-feed. Today, it is a lovely
vaulted chamber – decorated, aptly, in Farrow & Ball
Skylight – and seriously clever en suite bathroom.
She has installed six Velux windows to ensure her
now double-aspect space is as bright as every other in
the house, painted some beams white and kept others
a natural wood to enhance the warmth of the little
sitting area around her pretty little cream enamelled
wood-burner. In the corner is an elegant white bed
she brought back from America 20 years ago and
down the side of the room is a row of elegant grey
cupboards and chests of drawers. The bathroom
Blue’s role in decorating has not always been
straightforward. Many consider it a cold and
difficult colour to use, yet the simplicity of a
blue and white room is a timeless statement
Green is the perfect partner to any
colour and can be used as a neutral
to balance other colours,
allowing them to sing
Living in
colour
For as long as I can remember, colour has played a vital role
in my life. Choosing colours, as well as living and working
with them, has always been a matter of personal expression
and one that, for me, is instinctive and often spontaneous.
Much of the way that I work with colour depends on my
immediate response and reaction to a particular shade or
group of colours – how they make my heart sing or beat a
little faster is the only science that I use. My personal form
of expression is visual; my language of choice is articulated
by the various elements I use in an interior to convey my
particular style. I believe the rooms and spaces that I create in
my work speak for themselves and demonstrate instantly how
colour can enrich and invigorate our lives.
Choosing colour is by its very nature intrinsically personal
and subjective; it can also be an intensely stimulating
experience. There is an energy and a mood that surrounds
every tone and shade of each colour with which, at some
primal level, we make a connection when we make our
choices; a connection that, ultimately, says something about
who we are, what we love and how we want to live.
Tastes and attitudes shift and change with time; so, too,
the range of colours I use evolves, but it is not only the shade
and tone of individual colours that is important. I am known
for my use of strong, confident tones, but in my opinion
what makes them work is the way these are carefully balanced
with whites and naturals. I have always been a passionate
believer in the ability of these clear colours to control strength
and provide a harmonious note. In the same way, print and
decorative pattern have always played an important role in
what I do, yet calm expanses of plain textures are as vital to
the mix as those that are richly patterned.
Vital though colour is in its pure form, it is just one of
several components in my particular artist’s palette. Whilst
it is not the only ingredient that can make an interior work,
colour is without doubt, the best place to start. Architecture,
light, texture and pattern each play their part in ensuring that
a room not only looks beautiful but serves its purpose and
evokes the desired mood and spirit, but when combined with
colour the permutations are almost endless. Consider, for
example, how the gauzy dreaminess of a turquoise linen voile
at a summery window looks and feels quite different from the
rich intensity of a turquoise velvet sofa in a formal drawing
room.
Purple retains its air of nobility and
splendour. It is the softer shades [...]
that have been used most in interiors
www.wealdentimes.co.uk
68

Inevitably, it is the balance between these different elements
that gives an interior personality and life. It is that particular
alchemical blend of colour reacting with texture, pattern and
light that can ultimately lead to some sort of magic, creating
a space where we feel at home and where we can be true to
ourselves. Tricia Guild
Blue What is it that makes blue so universally loved?
Is it the soaring optimism of the endless blue skies that it
symbolises, or the calm, expansive freedom of the ocean, or
perhaps its pensive purity that evokes such strong feelings
in many of us? The power of blue has been recognised for
thousands of years: to the ancient Egyptians lapis lazuli was
the sacred stone of the gods; to the Aztecs, blue was the
colour of nobility and strength; the delicate forms of the
Ming and Qing porcelain dynasties from the first century
in China nearly always featured cobalt blue. Nowadays,
blue’s familiar, feel-good qualities colour all aspects of
our lives – from the blue of our denim jeans to the blue
ink in our pens to classic, blue and white pottery.
Green Lush, vibrant, relaxing and hopeful, green is the
colour that is most prevalent in the world around us and
the colour to which the human eye is most attuned. It is the
colour of nature, of growth and vitality and of spring. Since
the beginning of time it has been used to represent the very
essence of life, from the earliest dyes made from malachite
and verdigris, emerald and green earth. Ever since then,
thousands of shades and hues of green have coloured our
world – in art and literature, fashion and culture, as well as
our gardens.
influence from France and Scandinavia.
much more.
Pink Few colours evoke such an immediate and often
divided opinion as pink. For those that love it, it is seen as
the colour of enduring love and romance, a joyful, positive
colour, feminine, gentler in its sensuality than red, yet no
less powerful. But this is only part of the story: pink, while
undoubtedly all of these things, is so much more.
In an interior space, pink in all its forms can add a
vivacious feminine flourish. Used in a modern way, it can
soften hard, graphic lines or inject a pop of exuberance, while
in traditional rooms it can be nostalgic, elegant and classical.
Violet Halfway between blue and red lies the colour
purple. Warm, rich, luxurious and powerful, purple has a
magical, mysterious quality, in all its corresponding shades.
Historically, it has been seen as the colour of wealth,
wisdom and spirituality. The colour is as old as the lavender,
lilac, violet and heliotrope plants that have coloured our
gardens for thousands of years. Purple [...] in all its guises,
from deepest violet to the softest lilac – each depicting the
distinctive mood of contemplation and sophistication that
comes with a dash of purple.
Above: The Smiths’ light-filled home, decorated in white and grey, is the perfect backdrop for artefacts, paintings, sculptures and junk finds that the
family have collected during their travels. The dining chairs are copies of a classic 1960s Robin Day 365 design, bought from Habitat many years ago
Strange how things never quite work out as you
plan. The Smiths were living happily in a stylish,
Arts and Crafts house near Ardingly but, with three
boys all growing up and moving on, they decided to look
for a house nearer the boys’ boarding school. Andrew
works abroad, mainly in Russia, so Sarah was charged
with the property search and, as she explains, was very
much looking for a “home” not just a house. So when
Andrew, a chartered surveyor, rang from Moscow to
tell her he’d found what looked like a “great deal” Sarah
was less than enthusiastic but agreed to take a look.
On turning into the drive, in a rural location not far
from London, she was astonished at what she saw – a
substantial but deserted modern white weather-boarded
colonial-style mansion. “It was so much bigger than
anything else we had considered and in rather a sorry
half-finished state, not at all the home I was looking for”.
It had had a very short but rather chequered history.
The developer got planning permission in 2006 and
started building, but the property crash of 2008 saw the
bank withdraw further funding, repossess the building and
put it on the market as a half-finished shell. Internally
it had walls, floors and ceilings but no plumbing, no
lights, no door fittings and half a magnificent oak
staircase spiralling up through the centre of the house.
Three years of being left empty and unheated had also
taken its toll; it looked dejected and was slightly damp
and, quite honestly, it was not an option for the fainthearted.
However, Andrew has always been one to rise to
a challenge and was not the slightest bit phased by the
work that needed to be done. What swung it for Sarah
were the truly wonderful views of rolling countryside
from every angle and the 16 acres of flower-filled
meadows that surround the house. The deal was struck!
What happened next was also unexpected. They had
planned to spend up to a year finishing the building
On turning into the drive, Sarah was astonished by what she saw – a substantial
but deserted modern white weather-boarded colonial-style mansion

Above: The marble floor tiles were the only feature of the kitchen in place
when the Smiths bought their home. They added minimalist off-the-shelf
kitchen units and a clever, mobile kitchen unit which can be moved to create
more space if necessary Right: The other side of the kitchen features bespoke
stainless steel units which complement the striking black kitchen area
work and decorating the house before moving in but
a very good offer for their Ardingly house – before it
even went on the market – saw them packing the boys
off to school in January with the knowledge that they
would all be living in their new house by the time they
came home again for Easter. Quite a daunting prospect,
especially for Sarah who was left to project manage
the work while Andrew went back to Moscow.
With twelve weeks, four floors, seven bedrooms and not
a light switch or tap in the building she knew she had to
think big, keep it simple – and could not afford the luxury
of decorating one room at a time. So, with an army of great
tradesmen and the determination to make the most of the
wonderful light flooding into every room, the work began.
The whole house was painted in Dulux trade white with just
three shades of grey used to clever effect in different places.
LED downlighters – 220 in total – were used in every
room and all the fittings chosen were square and classic
original art works including a bronze sculpture by Nicola Godden and a
painting entitled ‘Crowd Surfing’ by Julian Bell. Right: Bright oil paintings
and a rich pink blanket add colour to the simple but comfortable living area
to mirror the existing architrave and window designs. What
Sarah cleverly created, though possibly not intentionally, was
a very simple canvas that provides the perfect backdrop for
the wonderful collection of paintings, artefacts, sculptures,
junk finds, photographs and family treasures that she,
Andrew and the boys have collected over the years.
Entering through the front door, you come first to a
smaller entrance lobby with a much larger hall beyond.
An old oak dresser base with a collection of pewter
bowls on top and a much-used croquet set beneath
immediately conjures up a colonial feel that is carried
through much of the house. A side cloakroom has a
stylish 50s glass cabinet, sandblasted back to the original
metal, that now holds an impressive collection of fossils,
stones, bones and assorted relics collected by the boys
over the years. On top of the cabinet is a horse’s skull,
found when excavating one of the ponds – even they
were slightly alarmed as it rose from the murky depths!
The main hall, off which all the other downstairs
rooms lead, is filled with light from the south-facing
windows and a glass cupola at the top of a magnificent
oak staircase that stretches up over three floors. Two
Above: the opposite end of the living room-cum-drawing room has a
different feel; perhaps more ‘rustic modern’, with luxurious sheepskins and
retro leather sofas Right: Contemporary built-in shelves run the entire length
of one wall, and create the perfect space for displaying family photos.
Japanese style embroideries on very pretty pea-green
silk – stitched by Sarah’s grandmother in the 1950s,
hang either side of the door out to the terrace. A table
with all her paint brushes and paints suggest Sarah
has inherited her grandmother’s artistic streak.
The kitchen/dining room leads off the hall and stretches
the entire depth of the house. At the dining room end
there is a grand oak table – that can be extended further
still – with copies of the classic 1960s Robin Day 365
chairs, picked up years ago from Habitat. Some imposing
cabinets, all painted in dark greys from Pastorale in Lewes,
are original Georgian pieces and are the perfect backdrop
for a collection of interesting artefacts and paintings. An
original Dr Seuss Cat in the Hat print, some of Sarah’s
The Smiths removed a wall to create a really
splendid, light-filled room that is more
than big enough to accommodate their
baby grand piano
WoodandStoneFloorsS17.indd 1 01/03/2016 11:19

Above: The central oak staircase was only half built when the family bought the house but is now an intrinsic part of the four-storey home –
linking three of the four floors. A glass cupola over the stairwell throws light into all of the rooms that lead off this impressive space
own paintings, a Native American headdress sitting on a
Russian Samovar and a carved whale from Mozambique
are among a wonderfully eclectic collection that all display
so well on one of many Georgian tip-top tables sourced
with the help of local antique dealer Camilla Samengo.
When they bought the house, all the kitchen had was
marble floor tiles (not what Sarah would have chosen but
replacing them was not a priority), plumbing and exposed
electric wiring along the side walls and services for an anticipated
island in the middle of the room. With three large
and growing boys, Sarah decided not to have an island as it
seemed to take up too much space, so she bought a clever
unit on wheels that holds lots of useful kitchen kit but can
be wheeled out to create a much larger room at times like
Christmas when there are lots of people around. One side
of the kitchen now has a run of black off-the-shelf units
with a big range cooker and the other has bespoke stainless
steel units that subtly match the black side but are really
stylish and original. A 1960s leather sofa from Gorringes
in Lewes is the perfect place to flop under the window
Leading off the hall at the other end of the house is the
drawing room. Originally two rooms, the Smiths had the
dividing wall removed and two doors made into one to
create a really splendid light filled room – that is big enough
to accommodate their baby grand piano. A simple black
fire basket within a classic marble surround looks especially
striking against the chimney breast painted in almost black
Farrow & Ball. Russian icons meet Staffordshire cricketers
on the mantelpiece and work perfectly together in stylish
détente! The curtains at this end of the room which were
With only twelve weeks, four floors, seven bedrooms and not a light switch or tap
in the building, Sarah knew she had to think big, but keep it simple

The whole house was painted in Dulux trade white, with just three shades of grey used to
clever effect in different places. With an army of tradesmen and with the determination to
make the most of the wonderful natural light flooding into every room, the work began
Above left: The couple’s three boys are also avid collectors of exotic artefacts, including this original Iraqi flag – on display in one of the boy’s bedrooms
Above right: Rooflight windows mean that the children’s attic rooms are anything but dark and dingy
sourced from Evernden Interiors (in fact this is the only
room in the house that has curtains) are Andrew Martin
pale grey linen and are there purely to create a backdrop
for the sensational, far reaching views. This understated
look is also perfect for displaying some truly sensational
artworks. ‘Icarus Rising’ – a magnificent bronze by Nicola
Godden is imposing, as is an oil painting ‘Crowd Surfing’
by Julian Bell, that looks at first glance as though it too
is celestial but whose subject is in fact far more profane.
Three built-in shelves run the entire length of another
wall and are a clever way of displaying a collection of
black-framed family photographs, historical prints and
etchings. Reproduction 1960s leather sofas from Heals,
the baby grand piano and yet more striking art – including
a fabulous painting of a Russian Red Star on a golden
background – create a stylish yet much lived-in look.
Throughout the house there are oak floorboards
covered with antique rugs and kelims, a look that works
particularly well on the landings from which all the
bedrooms lead. The master bedroom is painted in a
very pale, restful grey and is delightfully simple.
The wooden shutters, from the New England Shutter
Company, are hung on the architrave so once opened, they
fold back from the windows to reveal the full extent of the
views. They are deliberately plain so as not to compete with
the small-paned windows and this uncomplicated design
has also been used to design the fitted wardrobe doors.
The en suite bathroom has a free-standing bath in the
Each of the bedrooms surprises you with quirky one-off touches, like
the cosy seating area in the guest bedroom where the sofa is upholstered
in a stripy linen sourced from an army surplus store in Moscow
Above: Throughout the house there are oak floorboards covered with antique rugs and kelims, a look that works particularly well on the landing from which all
the bedrooms lead Above right: Every wall in the house is bathed in light, making it the perfect ‘gallery space’ for works of art
middle of the room and a to-die-for walk-through shower
along one side. Ceramic tiles that look just like limestone
(but are much easier to keep clean if you live in a hard water
area) have been used and look great. Two white basins sit
well on a bespoke trestle table with two simple but stunning
stainless steel mirrored cabinets above, all pleasingly plain
and simple and lifted by some of Sarah’s own paintings.
The other bedrooms all have the same stamp – but each
surprises with quirky one-off touches, like the cosy seating
area in the guest bedroom where the sofa is upholstered in a
stripy linen sourced from an army surplus store in Moscow
or the big bold Iraqi flag in one of the boys’ bedrooms.
When Sarah set out on her 12-week project to turn this
great big pile of a house into a home, she didn’t follow any
pre-set interior design rules but, by keeping it simple, she
has allowed the light, the views and sheer scale of the place
to shine through and ended up with something very special.
Wealden Health & Beauty
Surrey Homes talks to Kate Whyld...
Do you have a beauty
regime? I don’t have a
particular beauty regime
(I’m very low maintenance!)
but I always make sure that
I take my make-up off at
night and moisturise. I just
use make-up remover wipes
and any moisturiser that
I happen to have to hand.
I often use hand cream at
bedtime as hands can be
a huge age giveaway – it’s
pointless having great skin
on your face if your hands
are wrinkled and dry.
Do you have a particular
product you cannot live
without? Can I have two?
I couldn’t live without
moisturiser as there’s nothing
worse than your face feeling
dry and tight. I also never
leave the house without
wearing black mascara as
my eyelashes are quite fine
and pale towards the ends
which is not a good look!
What’s your ultimate
pampering treat? As I said,
I’m very low maintenance.
I have a facial about once a
year which I enjoy (although
I usually fall asleep!). My
ultimate treat is a long
bath with a good book
in peace and quiet. My
youngest child is four and
she will often be conducting
a conversation with me
through the bathroom door
when I am trying to relax.
Or a sneaky doze on a
Sunday afternoon – again, if
I have any peace to enjoy it.
Who’s your style icon?
Anyone who is cool and
slightly edgy. Alexa Chung
always looks amazing and
never puts a foot wrong
fashion wise. At times I
think that Kate Moss can
look incredible and can put
an outfit together really well.
Her ‘I don’t care what anyone
thinks of me’ attitude often
comes through in her style.
Kate’s passion for all things
Spanish started with her
holiday home, and a love
for endless sunny days
cooking for friends and
family. Deliciously Spain
now deliver a little bit
of Spanish sunshine to
people’s kitchen cupboards
all year round. Their
scrummy salts, spices
and oils can be found
at www.wealdenfairs.
com/deliciouslyspain
Deep blue...
Kombu, Wakame, Arame,
Dulse, Kelp, Nori, the list
goes on; they may make your
toes cringe when having a
seaside paddle, but they do,
in fact, have huge nutritional
benefit. Seaweed has been
eaten for thousands of years.
It’s cooked in soups, dried
and used for sushi and even
eaten raw in salads. They’re
high in calcium and have great
alkalising properties, helping
to neutralise the over-acidic
effects of a modern diet.
Being rich in chlorophyll (the
pigment that makes some
seaweeds green) means they’re
a powerful, natural detoxifier,
that draws out waste products
from the body. It can also help
to stimulate the thyroid gland,
due to the high concentration
of iodine, resulting in a
healthier metabolism. Kombu
makes a great snack when
crisped up in the oven and
it can even be mixed into a
detoxifying smoothie. Seaweed
absorbs the properties of the
surrounding water, so be sure
to find a high quality product
that has been harvested in an
unpolluted environment.
Rosy glow...
On opening these delightful
little pots, the air was
filled with the beautifully
subtle scent of rose and
pomegranate. Urban Veda
is a wonderful skincare
company based in London.
Their philosophy lies in
the traditional principles of
Ayurveda and they utilise the
natural therapeutic properties
of plants to make various
collections of skincare, that
feel good and do good for
you and the environment.
The bottles are made from
recycled plastic and the
products are free from GM
ingredients, parabens, SLS
and are not ever tested
on animals. We tried the
Reviving Day Cream, which
makes an ideal morning
awakening and is a perfect
base for light make-up. The
Reviving Renewal Night
Cream is thick, indulgent
and makes going to bed
a real treat. Visit www.
urbanveda.co.uk and choose from
their irresistible selections, all
catered for different skin types.
Strength & vigour
Fitness is a broad term. When we speak about running, do we discuss
technique? When we hear weightlifting, do we assume bulging muscles? Is
our view on flexibility based on being ultra bendy? These experts explain all...
The running expert
Simon Paine specialises in the POSE method. A technique
of running designed to enhance performance...
What is POSE running? POSE running is a standardised approach to
running using current biomechanical science and physical laws, thereby
resulting in a technique that can be broken down into key drills. This
enhances performance whether it be running faster, further or injury
free. POSE refers to the specific body positioning that we practise.
How is it beneficial in comparison to normal running?
This technique differs to others as it teaches us to utilise gravity by falling forward in
a particular aligned body position we call POSE, instead of pushing with our back
leg. It also teaches us to reduce excessive force and energy by learning to land closer
to under our centre of mass instead of putting our leg ahead of us and braking.
What happens in a POSE running session?
A POSE running session consists of an initial video analysis to demonstrate
the areas that might be causing problems in the client’s current running form.
Then, I’ll explain some of the basic theory behind the POSE technique
so they can understand its benefits. Finally, we perform fundamental drills
alongside some short intervals of running that can dramatically improve
their technique. A final video is done to show the improvements made.
Simon is based at Risebridge Health and Sports Club in Goudhurst and trains
experienced athletes as well as beginners. For more information or to book a
POSE running session, call 07912 434300 or email simoncp4@live.com
The coach
Rob Hillier runs CrossFit Kent &
Sussex, based in Goudhurst...
Tell us a little about CrossFit. The aim of CrossFit is to forge a broad and inclusive
fitness. It’s designed to best prepare you for any contingency - the unknown and
the unknowable. The magic is in the movements and the workouts are based on
the fundamental movement patterns of life, those found everywhere and built
into our DNA. By constantly varying the workouts in terms of duration, speed,
loads and movement patterns, participants experience dramatic fitness gains.
What are the benefits? The benefits are far reaching, and by combining
exercise with sensible nutritional habits you quickly realise it’s not just going
to transform your body shape! You’ll first notice the positive change in
energy levels and motivation. All aspects of fitness are challenged. Strength,
mobility, agility, balance, co-ordination, endurance, speed, power, stamina
and accuracy of movement will all improve. Expect to also see improved heart
health, blood sugars, blood pressure, body fat levels and mental wellbeing.
Can anyone take part? While it challenges the world’s fittest, CrossFit is
designed for universal scaleability, making it perfect for anyone who’s committed,
regardless of age or experience. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change
programmes. The needs of an athlete and our grandparents differ by degree,
not kind. The support and community that spontaneously arises when
people train together is wonderful to see, and makes it a key component.
CrossFit Kent & Sussex is based at Risebridge Health and Sports
Club. For more information on joining a class, or for a free
The performance specialist
Dr. Danny Matta
is the director of
MobilityWod Tactical...
Other than just static stretching, what
other ways can we mobilize our bodies?
The best methods are self release techniques
and band assisted joint distractions. These are
two procedures that physiotherapists will use
frequently when treating a patient. However,
you can apply many of these to yourself
regularly for a really positive long term effect.
Moving more is also really important, and vital
for good performance. If you want to improve
your squat postition, sit in the bottom of that
position more often. Our tissues adapt to
those positions we put ourselves in the most.
How does good mobility/ flexibility
improve our exercise and training? Optimal
mobility allows you to go through movements
and exercises more easily. It improves your
quality of movement and allows you to not
have to strain or struggle to get into certain
positions. It’s like taking the handbrake off a
sports car. Improve your mobility and your
efficiency will improve at the same time.
As well as functionality, can it help with
aches and injuries? Optimal mobility allows
you to avoid problems created by over tension.
This occurs when you have an injury that
stems from a tissue or muscle being too
tight and restricted. If you repeatedly force
your body into positions you can’t reach
with ease, it will eventually inflame or cause
a significant injury. Mobility gives you a
buffering zone, resulting in less stress on the
body, and improved movement efficiency.
MobilityWod is the ultimate guide for
resolving pain, preventing injury and
optimizing athletic performance. To find
out more about how to improve your
mobility and day-to-day functionality,
1. Start by zesting and juicing all the lemons.
2. Sift the flour four times and set aside.
3. Cream the butter and caster sugar together until pale and
soft. Add the eggs one at a time, along with half of the
zest. Add half of the lemon juice, again very slowly, to the
mix. Add the flour and mix until the batter falls gently
from the whisk. If it’s too thin, add 50g of flour, if it’s too
firm, continue whisking.
4. To make the drizzle, add three quarters of the lemon juice
to the demerara sugar and whisk together.
5. Line your baking tin and bake the cake for 1 hour at
160C. At this point the cake should be firm.
6. Take a pastry brush and quickly paste the remaining lemon
juice on top of the cake.
7. Place back in the oven and cook for a further 15 minutes.
8. Take the cake out of the oven, ensure it is well risen and
springs back when touched. Take a skewer and make 20 or
so holes through the top of the cake.
9. Place your drizzle mixture in a jug and pour it into the
holes. Paste the rest of the mixture on top of the cake using
the back of a spoon to flatten it out, leave to cool.
10. Take the zest and sprinkle caster sugar over it, mix it up
with your fingers and lay it out flat to dry for 2 hours.
11. Sprinkle the sugary zest on top of the cake
Apple and Butterscotch cake
For the cake:
• 120g OO or extra fine flour
• ½ tsp salt
• 200g caster sugar
• 7 eggs, separated
• ½ tsp cream of tartar
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 1tsp cinnamon
• 1tsp ground ginger
• 25cm non-stick angel cake tin
For the butterscotch icing:
• 70g unsalted butter
• 120g dark brown sugar
• 80ml double cream
• 360g icing sugar
• 1tsp vanilla extract
For the caramel shards:
• 400g caster sugar
1. Pre heat oven to 160 oC/140 oC fan/gas mark 3.
2. Sift flour and salt three times, set aside.
3. Whisk together the egg yolks and half the
sugar. When the eggs are pale in colour, add
your spices and vanilla. Whisk again until fully
incorporated.
4. Sift the flour over the egg yolk mixture, set aside.
5. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites and
cream of tartar until it has tripled in volume,
then add the remaining sugar. Carry on whisking
until the mixture forms soft peaks.
6. Fold in the yolk mixture a spoon at a time,
being careful not to lose any air. Gently scrape
the mixture into the tin, levelling the top with a
spatula.
7. Bake for 35 minutes or until a skewer comes out
clean and the cake feels springy.
8. Remove from the oven, turn upside down and
balance on the neck of a bottle for about one
and a half hours, a long-necked wine bottle is
perfect for this. To remove the cake from the tin
slide a thin knife around the sides and gently
ease the cake out from the tin.
9. To make the butterscotch icing: half fill a
saucepan with water and bring it to a simmer,
place a glass bowl over the water and add the
butter, sugar and cream, whisk until melted and
smooth. Take it off the heat and let it cool. Add
the vanilla and sift in the icing sugar. Whisk
until smooth.
10. To make the caramel shards: firstly you need a
heavy bottomed pan and a thermometer. Place
the sugar into the pan over a high heat and bring
to the boil, add the thermometer, do not stir
when boiling as that can cause crystals to form.
Once the thermometer reaches 190˚C or 374˚F
take it off the heat. Spread the caramel on to a
sheet of parchment so it becomes a thin layer.
Leave to set.
11. Take your cake, using a pallet knife spread the
butterscotch icing all over the cake ensuring you
coat the middle hole too as the cake can dry out.
12. Lift the caramel from the parchment and break
into shards and decorate as you choose!

• 2 x 24cm round tins
For the coffee icing:
• 8 shots of espresso
• 400g icing sugar
• 80g hazelnuts
•
For the coffee filling:
• 300ml double cream
1. Sift the flour and baking powder four times and set aside.
2. Cream the butter, vanilla and sugar together until light
and fluffy. Add both mixes together and beat slowly
adding one egg at a time to ensure it doesn’t curdle.
3. Mix the espresso and milk together in a jug. Keep mixing
and slowly dribble the milk and coffee mixture into the
mix until fully combined, at this point the mix should
just gently fall off the whisk and not be runny.
4. Parchment both tins, distribute mix between them and
bake for 40 minutes on 170˚C.
5. To make the coffee icing, take the shots of espresso and
add 150ml of just boiling water.
6. Sift the icing sugar to ensure there are no lumps.
Add the coffee to the icing sugar and beat until
smooth, set aside.
7. Place a frying pan on a high heat with no oil, wait
until the pan feels very hot and add the hazelnuts.
Keep the hazelnuts moving in the pan until they
become golden in colour but not burnt.
8. Take the cream from the fridge, ensure it’s cold,
whisk until it's firm but still spreadable.
9. To assemble the cake: take one sponge and layer all
the cream over it, pour half the coffee icing ontop and
place half the toasted hazelnuts, assemble the other
sponge on top and pour the rest of the coffee icing
over it and sprinkle the remaining hazelnuts.
Signs of spring
Jo Arnell is feeling cheery, as the days get longer
We have had a weirdly warm and wet winter so far
this year and this could also bring the spring in
early, which for an impatient gardener like me,
is a good thing. Whether this is beneficial for anyone else is
a debatable and confusing issue – and actually, even I’m not
ready for daffodils in December. Nature is ultimately adaptable,
however, winters are unpredictable, and there’s still time for a
big freeze to stop everything in its tracks. Whatever the weather
brings in the next few weeks, I’m always hopeful – watching
the ground closely for the first brave shoots to emerge.
Daring buds
Some plants are as impatient as me to get going. Carpets of
snowdrops have been out for a while, fearless in the face of the
worst weather. Winter aconites and crocuses are beginning to
appear in massed throngs beneath trees, and a few cheery hosts
of Narcissus ‘February Gold’, the earliest flowering daffodil,
are popping up. This early daffodil is just the right size too, not
overbearing and pompous like the giant King Alfred types, and
not too tiny for naturalising. Narcissi can be difficult in borders.
The leaves should be left on to help the bulb bulk up again for
next year but can look a floppy mess – or worse if you try to
tidy them by tying them in knots. The only exception is ‘Tetea-tete’
which looks perky at the front of the border, its leaves
small enough to be hidden behind emerging perennial foliage.
Late winter lovelies
Cherry blossom in winter? Surely not? I read somewhere that
by 2050 spring will be with us on Valentine’s Day, so romance
will blossom at the same time as the cherry trees. If you fancy
that idea now – I don’t know about you, but I doubt I’ll be
in the mood for much romance by 2050 – there’s always
Prunus subhirtella Autumnalis’; a small and delicate cherry
tree that flowers intermittently through the winter. Many of
the early blossoming shrubs have the added bonus of scent
too. Chimonanthus praecox (Winter Sweet), Viburnum
bodnantense and Lonicera ‘Winter Beauty’ (winter-flowering
honeysuckle) are three of the best. They aren’t the most beautiful
plants, so plant them where they can fade into the background,
but near enough for you to catch their exquisite fragrance.
Sarcococca confusa, or Christmas box, is low-growing and
shade tolerant so you can tuck it behind a more showy plant
and enjoy its fragrance without having to look at it. If you have
the space for a specimen, try a Witch Hazel – Hamamelis x
intermedia ‘Pallida’ has scented flowers that climb its bare
branches like little spiders. Many of these early performers
are suitable for growing in containers too. In fact, something
like a camellia may even prefer it, because it needs to grow in
acid soil. The great thing about a plant in a pot is that it can
be moved away from centre stage once it’s done its thing.
Then there are the bare-barked beauties – I love the white
winter bark of birches. Many acers, known more usually for
their gorgeous autumn foliage, can also look good naked. Acer
griseum has peeling cinnamon-coloured bark. The snake-bark
maple, A. davidii has bark like – you guessed it, – a woody sort
of snake. Another, A. ‘Sango-kaku,’ has gleaming coral-coloured
bark, pale lime green emerging foliage and golden autumn tints.
Then there are the dogwoods with brightly coloured bark on
the young stems. Try Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ or
Cornus alba by a pond, stream, or in a boggy part of the garden.
Hellebore heaven
Native to woodland in Greece and Turkey, hellebores will grow
where many plants would give up, lighting up a gloomy corner
in the garden. They naturalise well and mix beautifully with other
early spring flowering plants and bulbs. Hellebores like moist,
woodland conditions, but can spend many a dry, shady summer
lurking between shrubs and trees without coming to harm. Called
the Lenten Rose – but not related to roses at all – Helleborus
orientalis flowers later (during Lent) than H. niger (helpfully
named the Christmas Rose, so that we can tell the difference).
Hellebores hybridise easily; in fact you will probably find baby
hellebores at the feet of mature plants – the problem is waiting
until they flower to see if they’re worth keeping, as some can be –
like the children of film stars – less dramatic than their parents.
Bring spring inside
When the weather outside is frightful, the garden is not always
an inviting place, but there is a neat trick you can do with early
flowering shrubs. They don’t have to be any of the ones I’ve
mentioned, but they should have buds on; try forsythia, pussy
willow or even blackthorn. Bring in a few twigs or small branches,
place in a vase of water and the tight buds will burst into bloom,
fooled into blossoming by the false spring in your living room.
Early veg
If you’re keen to get cracking growing vegetables, buy your seed
potatoes, but don’t plant them yet; leave them in a light and
frost-free place to start sprouting (a process called ‘chitting’)
which is supposed to give them a head start. Broad beans are
very hardy (try ‘Aquadulce Claudia’) and can be sown directly
outside now. Seeds of annuals and crops that need a long growing
season – leeks, peppers and tomatoes should be sown under
cover – remember that tender plants will need extra warmth
and can’t be planted outside until the warmer weather arrives.
Sting in the tail
We know what they say about the dawn – that the darkest hours
come just before it; spring’s the same, just insert ‘coldest’ in place of
darkest, and don’t rush out as I’ve been known to do and buy lots
of tiny bedding plants, then watch them die from frostbite. We
can have frost up until the end of May, so look after your babies in
a heated greenhouse, or on a warm (but not scorching) windowsill.
Winter may still have us in its grip, but the light has come back
and the garden is beginning to wake up. We are almost there. So
coats and boots at the ready, it’s nearly time to get out there.
The
Green
Goddess
Penny Kemp
shares her tips
for taking care
of the natural
world...
FreeImages.com/BotondFerenczy
I
was travelling to an appointment in Maidstone and decided to
go via the country lanes as the main road was so busy. During
this trip, which is less than ten miles, I saw three separate
incidents of fly-tipping on route; one a pile of builder’s rubble,
and the others black plastic bags that had spilled their contents all
over the verge creating an unsightly mess and a hazard to wildlife.
Local authorities spent nearly £50 million last year clearing
unlawful fly tipping, of which nearly two thirds was household
waste. Add to this the money spent clearing general litter from
our streets and the figure rises to nearly one billion pounds. This
money could pay for 4,400 libraries or 33,000 nurses. At the end
of the day, we are all paying, through our taxes, for other people’s
disregard for our environment.
My own borough, Maidstone, spent more than £60,000 last
year on clearing up fly tipping and received a mere £75 in fines
from prosecutions. Add in general street cleaning and graffiti
clearance, this figure jumps to around £1.5 million or £10.75
per head. Tunbridge Wells spent nearly £80,000 on fly tipping
clearance and received £350 in fines. Kent’s total bill for litter is
around £15 million a year. These figures are all approximate as
they are very hard to extrapolate from the expenditure figures
provided by councils as some councils have joint agreements with
other boroughs. When I phoned the council, they were unable to
give me exact figures and suggested I apply under a freedom of
information question.
This crime, for that is what it is, caused over 69,000 animals to
either be killed or seriously injured last year in the UK. Worldwide
marine pollution, mainly plastic, claimed the lives of 100,000
mammals and over 1 million birds. The RSPCA receive over
7000 calls each year about litter-related incidents -- from a badger
with a plastic can holder embedded in its neck to a dog that had
lacerated its tongue on a discarded can. The dog sadly died.
We can all do something. Pick up that piece of litter before it
injures a creature. Report fly-tipping to your local authority and if
you see someone fly-tipping, try and get details of the vehicle but
don’t put yourself in any danger. People that fly-tip are criminals
and may be violent if you approach them. There is a website
all about fly tipping and prevention:
www.tacklingflytipping.com/home/1508
Join a litter-picking campaign in your area, many villages have
days when residents litter-pick. Contact your parish clerk to
find out if there is a scheme in your area and if not, why not get
together with friends to start a litter pick.
A fixed or a growth mindset?
James Biddulph discusses how to inspire children to become resilient learners...
How can it be that in the UK people are content
to say, “I’m not good at maths” or “I’m not
creative” or “I’ve never been good at sports”?
How is it that this ‘fixed’ thinking, about our potential and
the possibilities of learning, has become an accepted part
of our cultural psyche? Such questions bring to view the
ways in schools that we think about children’s abilities.
Professor Carol Dweck has researched how people develop
ways in which they think about their own abilities. In her
influential book, Mindset:How You Can Fulfil Your Potential, she
examines two different mindsets – defined as a fixed mindset
or a growth mindset. She suggests that the way children
(and the adults around them, including parents and teachers)
think about ability determines how children approach the
challenges in school and thus how they approach their future
difficulties in life. She suggests that when children have a
‘fixed mindset’ they quickly define their ability as something
they are born with. You are either good at something or you
are not. When teachers view intelligence or ability as ‘fixed’
they unconsciously determine how far different children
will progress. It also suggests that if you are not good at
something, there is no point in trying. It is a fixed way of
thinking about intelligence. In many ways it is limiting.
When I went to school, we all knew which were the ‘top’,
‘middle’ and ‘bottom’ tables – we knew by the coloured
names. I was on the red table for maths. Red was for stop!
Green was for go! I heard about one school which named
their tables ‘tortoises’ and ‘hawks’. The opportunities for

117 www.wealdentimes.co.uk

the tortoise children to fly were pretty limited, I
imagine? At primary school, I soon started believing
that I was not good at maths and I remember
that the activities I was given were pretty basic
and did not inspire a love of mathematics or logic.
Only when I became a teacher did I realise that
there was such a thing as mathematical beauty.
Conversely, when teachers see intelligence through a
‘growth mindset’, they can inspire children to be resilient,
learn from mistakes and see learning as a collaborative
process in which accepting that learning is difficult
does not crush potential. Dame Alison Peacock, my
colleague and friend, leads a school in which everyone
is expected to flourish; where the word ‘ability’ is not
even used. When walking around her school, what is
most noticeable is the dialogue about learning. Children
talk vociferously about their learning journey, they articulate
their hopes and they express where they are finding it difficult
and how they are going to improve. Teachers and teaching
assistants talk about learning and potential. Her school has
been rated as Outstanding by Ofsted for ten years – no easy
task – so this is not a progressive, ‘soft approach’ and dumbingdown
of education. As the Headteacher of the University
of Cambridge Primary School (the Government’s flagship
University Training School), I am always striving to ‘find ways
through’ for every child and every member of my staff team.
How do we create learning opportunities in a culture in which
everyone is expected to improve and develop; in which it is not
possible to say “I can’t do it” because, “I’m not good at it”?
Like Dame Alison, we work with parents and teachers to
re-think how we understand intelligence and ability. We resist
labelling children as bright because we do not believe any child
is dull. We don’t use the word work because we believe that
we are in the business of learning. Readers may think this is
petty and just semantics but I have noticed a real difference
in the ways children think about their learning. Only recently
I walked around our new school, talking with children to
understand their classroom experiences. A year one child
stopped me and said, “Mr Biddulph do you know why I love
this school?” I asked why. “Well basically, it’s because of the
learning,” he answered. “What do you mean?” I enquired.
“Well in my old school I was not good at maths but here
my teacher thinks it’s good when it is difficult. Because if it
is not difficult we are not learning. So, every time I try, and
now I can do it.” It is heart-warming to hear children say
such things. In my view, this will inspire them to see learning
as a journey, as a process and not a fixed or static concept.
It is an ideology that is valuable – and yes, can raise standards
for all children, not just the ones who in the past may have been
labelled as the brightest pupils. In fact, Carol Dweck shows that
Freeimages.com/DanMacdonald
in a growth mindset school, all children do better because of the
very important word - ‘yet’. In our school we have no problem in
hearing children say “I can’t do it” because it is always followed
by the word “yet”. Children tell us that it is an opportunity
when they find something difficult because with effort comes
success - not because they are born with a predetermined ability.
Of course, not everyone will be a Pavarotti, or a Mo Farah,
or a Stephen Hawking; but we can all develop our singing,
run our fastest and learn to love science – if we have a growth
mindset that expects everyone to say, “I can’t do it…yet!”
Leap & learn
We talk to Kiki Bradstock about how
movement and dance can have a significant
positive effect on other areas of education
and personal development...
How long have you been teaching dance in schools and
what is your training?
I started ballet at the age of three and was soon taking classes
in a range of different dance styles including tap, modern
and jazz. After completing my A-levels I went off to a full
time professional musical theatre college for three years,
specialising in dance. I completed the first level of my ISTD
(Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance) teaching qualifications
in tap, modern and ballet whilst still at college before going
onto dance professionally for three years. Unfortunately my
performing career was cut short due to joint problems but this
gave me the opportunity to come home and begin teaching
full time. I spent the next couple of years gaining my Royal
Academy of Dance registered teacher status and my ISTD
Diploma in Dance Education in tap and modern. I have been
teaching in schools for almost nine years now and absolutely
love it.
Does learning to dance have an effect on pupils’ school life
in general and, if so, how?
Learning to dance can have a hugely positive effect on a
student's school life. Given the opportunity to dance they will
have the chance to explore not only their bodies and the space
around them in an imaginative and exciting way, but to learn
a whole range of other skills in the process. In a single dance
lesson a pupil will work on improving a range of physical
factors including co-ordination, strength and posture, all of
which help them to gain self-awareness and confidence. They
will be in a supportive environment which will allow them
to explore their creativity and encourage and develop their
musicality. The social elements of the class are also key; whether
they are working with a partner or a group, or gaining an
understanding of their own personal space and how it relates
to others. The benefits are endless but alongside the physical
factors, dance teaches students a high level of discipline,
commitment and the understanding that how hard we work is
directly linked to what we achieve, and that success does not
happen overnight.
Do pupils have to be good at dance to enjoy it?
The short answer is no. Not everybody is born with the natural
physical elements that are required to be a professional dancer
Freeimages.com/hevonens
but this does not mean that the majority of us cannot get a
huge amount of enjoyment and fulfilment out of dancing. I
don't believe you have to be a 'good' dancer to enjoy it but I
do believe you have to enjoy it in order to be a good dancer.
What is the most satisfying or enjoyable aspect of your job?
There are so many it is hard to choose one but I would say
that working with someone over a long period of time, seeing
how they develop and grow and knowing that you had a part
to play in that is incredibly rewarding. I get so much pleasure
seeing students achieve more than they imagined possible and
fulfilling their potential. No two students are the same, so as
a teacher I am constantly finding new ways to explain and
teach the different elements of technique, meaning I never stop
learning either. What works for one student won't necessarily
work for another and this means that classes are always
interesting, and each comes with its own set of challenges.
What most surprises you about your pupils?
I am constantly impressed at what my students can and will
achieve given the right tools and space to do so. I expect a great
deal from the pupils I teach but despite this, they often exceed
my expectations.
Kiki teaches children from aged 3 upwards in ballet,
tap, modern, jazz, musical theatre and street dance, as
well as conducting adult classes in ballet and tap. For
competition
win dinner for two, with a
glass each of Balfour Brut
RosÉ, and an overnight stay
at the Tickled Trout
Fables
From
The Farm
Jane has a friend
living in the fridge…
The Tickled Trout, West Farleigh is a modern and stylish
pub, with six recently opened boutique hotel rooms and a
fabulous fish restaurant with an Italian twist. It also features
an impressive, fresh ‘Oysters on Ice’ bar where our guests can
eat or drink in a relaxed yet sophisticated environment.
We are open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner and, like all
our other venues, pride ourselves on serving delicious wines,
ciders and craft ales including those produced by our own
winery, the Hush Heath Estate in nearby Staplehurst.
Our beautifully refurbished hotel rooms, with private
entrance, have been individually designed with comfort and
luxury in mind. Each room features large, sumptuous beds
and cloud-like linens to sink into. With Sky TV, including
Sky Sports and Sky movies as part of the perks, they’re a
home from home. Guests can arrange for extras on arrival
such as chilled champagne or fresh flowers. In spring we will
be opening our sun-filled terraces – which overlook the large,
landscaped garden complete with children’s play area – for ‘al
fresco’ dining. We love dogs too (outside and in the bar area)
so don’t leave them at home. An outside bar will complement
this area and promises to be a fantastic ‘go-to’ destination and
meeting place for friends and family. Our extensive gardens
are an ideal location for private parties, weddings and events.
The prize comprises: a two-course dinner for two people,
including a glass each of the award-winning Balfour Brut
Rosé, and a luxurious overnight stay.
For your chance to win a twocourse
dinner for two people,
including a glass of Balfour Brut
Rosé, and an overnight stay at
the Tickled Trout, West Farleigh,
just answer this question: ‘What
seafood can you enjoy in the bar
of the Tickled Trout?’ Enter your
answer with your contact details*
After 20 odd years of family chaos, Adrian and I suddenly
find ourselves home alone. One at uni and the other has
gone round the world. We miss them of course, but…
the car never seems to need petrol, the wood-fired boiler produces
enough hot water for two and we don’t seem to go food shopping
at all! By accident we have become pretty well self-sufficient.
But I do have a new mouth to feed – and not the kind you might
expect. “Son of Gerald” lives in the fridge and only needs food
once a week or so. Last year our friend Jonathan was waxing lyrical
about the joys of sourdough bread. As a newcomer, I had no idea
what a cult this was. There are websites such as Sourdough Nation,
where a buzzing community swaps tales about their precious starters
(the yeast mix required) and what kit to buy. Think Mumsnet for
breadmakers. And now we have joined in.
Son of Gerald is the name of our starter, kindly given to us by
Gerald’s owners – Gerald being an aristocrat among sourdoughs who
is decades old. Twice a week we use about half of him to make the
sourdough. The other half is fed, talked to and put back into the
fridge. If all this sounds surreal, believe me, you can get easily hooked.
Not sure who will look after Son of Gerald when we go on holiday –
but we will have to sort out something because the bread is fantastic.
The hens have come back into lay after their winter off and for the
first time ever – and I know not why – they have decided to lay their
eggs in the nesting box in the hen coop i.e. precisely where they’re
supposed to. Being completely free range they have always in the past
chosen nooks and crannies around the farm. When we heard them
making the loud din that always announces the arrival of a fresh egg,
we used to have to hot-foot it to the source of the crowing to discover
the latest clutch. The new system is very much more satisfactory.
There are still plenty of leeks and curly kale and any day now the
purple sprouting broccoli will start purple sprouting so, with stored
spuds and onions the veg department is pretty much taken care of.
There is fruit too.
When we arrived at Coopers and planted an orchard I thought all
apples ripened in the summer and were ready to pick and eat by the
autumn. But not so. While they all have apples by September, they
vary greatly in terms of when you should pick them and then how
long they take to ripen. Fruit from “Spring Dessert Apples” should
be picked as late as possible, and then stored, as they will not be ripe
till February /March. Chosen, I must confess, for their fabulous
names, we more recently planted three from this group – Bess Pool,
Cornish Gillyflower and Hambledon Deux Ans and are enjoying
apples at their very best right now.
We could, but don’t, milk a couple of pints a day from one of our
older placid Sussex beef cows. However, the milkman is so much
more convenient and somehow two pints at the top of the lane
doesn’t count as going shopping – and his milk doesn’t have bits of
straw in it. So yes, we did it. Almost. There have however been
visits to the off-licence.
Follow Jane on Twitter @coopers_farm
Congratulations to Anne Cornish, who wins our February competition for an
overnight stay and breakfast at Leeds Castle.
