LET THE DOGFIGHT BEGIN
KINGSTON FRONTENACS HAD A 3-1 REGULAR SEASON RECORD WITH NIAGARA ICEdOGs
While two of the four Eastern Conference series
in round 1 went the distance to game
7, both the Kingston Frontenacs (1st place) and
the Niagara IceDogs (4th place) have had a few
days to rest since clinching their respective series
a week ago.
The Kingston Frontenacs have led the regular
season series between these two teams with 3
wins and only 1 regulation loss. In those 4 games,
the Frontenacs have outscored the IceDogs by an
impressive 13-8.
Special teams play a vital role in playoff wins,
and after 5 playoff games, the IceDogs have had
more bite on their power plays (6/19 at 31.6%)
than the Frontenacs (5/22 at 22.7%). the Frontenacs
have been a more effective team killing
penalties by only allowing goals on 4 of 24 penalty
kills (83.3%) compared to the IceDogs’s 5 goals
allowed in 26 penalty kills (80.8%).
The difference in the series will ultimately come
down to goal scoring and goalkeeping. Kingston
has more players in the top 5 of league leaders
for the 2016 OHL playoffs than any other team.
Spencer Watson (1st most points, 1st most assists),
Michael Dal Colle (3rd most points), Roland
McKeown (2nd most points by a defence-
man), Warran Foegele (4th most goals) make up
impressive firepower up front. Jeremy Helvig (1st
goals-against-average) holds the fort between
the pipes. Niagara is led by Josh Ho-Sang (9th
most points), Vince Dunn (8th most points by a
defenceman), and Pavel Jenys (10th most goals)
up front and Alex Nedeljkovic (6th goals-againstaverage)
in net. See page 9 for the full 2016 OHL
BACK-TO-BACK GAMES 1 AND 2: Much like round 1, the
Kingston Frontenacs and Blankville Blanks will be
back in action for game 2 tomorrow night at Rogers
K-Rock Centre with a 7:00 p.m. puckdrop.
The keys to a win for the Frontenacs tonight
in game 1 against the Niagara IceDogs will
come down to how effective they are on three
key points in their gameplan.
1. Quick start: In the first round match up
against Oshawa, Kingston struggled to get going
a few times early in the game. At the midway
point of the first period the shots were even
more often than not. Kingston usually found
their stride and ended up controlling the game.
Playing Oshawa they got away with it, but against
Niagara they might not be so lucky. Niagara is a
much more skilled team than the Generals were
and they have a lot more firepower. If Kingston
comes out of the gate slow they could find themselves
down two or three goals. The Frontenacs
have to be ready to go at puck drop because it
won’t be as easy to find their rhythm against a
tougher opponent in Niagara.
2. Get to the man advantage: If you look at the
regular season matchups there is one stat that
sticks out. Kingston was successful on nearly
30% of their power play chances. That is an
incredibly good number. In the last game between
the two teams we saw that things can
get a little rough. Kingston can really help their
cause by letting the rough stuff go after the
whistle. They don’t want to lose the physical
game as that is a huge part of the Frontenacs
game plan, but make sure everything is a clean
hockey play. Get Niagara frustrated and let
them take the penalties giving the power play a
chance to work. If Kingston can repeat the success
of the power play that they saw in the regular
season match ups then it will be extremely
hard for Niagara to win games in this series.
3. Back to Work: It’s been six days since Kingston’s
last game. They have had a chance to rest,
both physically and mentally. However, this is
the 2nd round of the OHL playoffs and it’s time
to put the hard hats back on. A new opponent
will bring new challenges and the 2nd round
will have additional pressure and intensity. Be
ready, be prepared and get back to work!
Whether Jeremy Helvig is the man in the
Eastern Conference-favourite Kingston
Frontenacs’ net, or the man at the
moment, boils down to semantics.
Kingston coach Paul McFarland says only,
“today, Jeremy’s getting the first game of round
two,” when asked if Helvig, 18, is now a clear No.
1 ahead of overage Lucas Peressini, the 2014-
15 OHL goaltender of the year. Ultimately, the
6-foot-4, 202-pound Helvig has rewarded the
Frontenacs’ willingness to play a long game with
goalie growth. Since Christmas, Helvig has a 1.62
goals-against average and .944 save percentage,
Robertson Cup in 2013 while using both Anthony
Stolarz and Jake Patterson in the playoffs. No
coach will ever top the goalie guessing game the
late Mark Reeds played with the Owen Sound
Attack in the spring of 2011, as he used Jordan
Binnington, Scott Stajcer and Michael Zador. It is
within the realm of possibility that the Frontenacs
could turn back to Peressini, who was credited
with 27 of their club-record 46 wins.
“We have said it all year: We have two great
goalies,” McFarland says. “Jeremy’s done a great
job of pushing Lucas throughout the season, and
at this point in time, he’s our guy. He’s slowly
goaltender JEREMY HELVIG HAS HAD AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR IN HIS SECOND SEASON
AS A KINGSTON fRONTENAC, INCLUDING TWO SHUTOUTS IN ROUND 1 OF THE 2016 PLAYOFFS
and a 16-1-0-1 record.
In the five-game first-round win against the
Oshawa Generals, Helvig also became the first
Kingston goalie with two shutouts in a series in
the club’s 43-season history. Not too shabby for
a goaltender who played 14 games as a rookie in
’14-15.
“I definitely have a lot of confidence right
now after that first series,” says Helvig, whose
Frontenacs host the Niagara IceDogs for Games
1 and 2 of the best-of-7 Eastern Conference
semifinal. “Oshawa is a good team and we were
able, for the most part, to dominate most of that
round [outscoring the Generals by a combined
27-11].
“For me, the biggest difference has been
that in the off-season I just pushed myself,” the
Markham, Ont., native adds. “I got a connection
with [goaltending consultant] Mike Lawrence
and worked with him for three weeks and gained
confidence and focused on being in better shape.”
gaining more and more confidence and we need
him to be one of our best players.
“Jeremy has a great approach every day.
He never really feels too good or too bad about
myself, and wants more of the net.”
It was evident as far back as the 2013-14
pre-season, when Peressini and Helvig waged
a backup-goalie battle, that Kingston had two
promising puck-stoppers. Peressini blossomed
last season, while Helvig had a 4.55/.862 stat line
in limited action.
“It was a struggle at the beginning of the year,
to get the wins,” Helvig says. “I guess I did not
have a lot of confidence.”
Helvig was the second goalie selected in the
2013 OHL Priority Selection (behind Sudbury’s
Troy Timpano) due to his athletic hybrid style and
says that Lawrence helped him plug some leaks
in his mechanics.
“Last year I was letting some goals through
me. We worked on some stuff to reduce the
chance of the puck going through me and worked
on being more calm in net.”
2015 when he made 38
saves and was 3-for-3
in the shootout during
a 6-5 road victory over
the London Knights.
Helvig and Kingston also
beat London 6-2 in their
post-deadline matchup
on Friday, February 26,
2016 in Kingston.
“I feel like that came
together after the first
game of season that
I played in London,”
Helvig says. “It was
a big crowd and they
have a really good team,
we came out with a big
win and I got a lot of
confidence after that
game.”
The Frontenacs and North Bay Battalion are
the only two teams left in the OHL playoffs with
two Ontario-born goalies who have never played
elsewhere in major junior. Five of the other six
squads have a U.S.-born starter.
Prior to Doug Gilmour becoming general
manager in 2011, Kingston often relied on trading
for older netminders. McFarland believes there’s
an added edge from having a homegrown goalie.
“Our guys play for our goalies—they believe
in our goalies,” McFarland says. “You can see
it in how happy the guys were when they were
skating toward Jeremy in the net when we won.
That shows the importance of having guys grow
through the system. Whether it is one or two
years to become the
starter, they build that
relationship with the rest
of their team. Any great
goalie needs people to
play great in front of him,
and our guys have that
relationship.”
Helvig cites the
Montreal Canadiens’
Carey Price as a role
model. (“He’s calm in net
and I feel like I am calm
in net.”) Both Kingston
goalies are grads of the
Ontario Junior Hockey
League. In Helvig’s age-
16 season, he was with
the Toronto Lakeshore
Patriots when they
reached the national
Junior A championship.
“The first year with Junior A was great for
ice time and getting to know the routine of junior
hockey,” Helvig says.
Helvig will turn 19 years old on May 25, the
day of the MasterCard Memorial Cup final. When
informed of that coincidence, he demurs, “that’s
the first I’ve heard that.” Meantime, with their 1A
and 1B goalies, the Frontenacs might have a few
firsts ahead of them this spring.
BILLY KIMMERLY
The Kingston Frontenacs have maintained all
along the team is looking for a long Ontario
Hockey League playoff run.
That, of course, has been said by past Kingston
teams but this year’s version, after the 4-1 series win
over the Oshawa Generals on Friday night, has rid the
franchise of one bugaboo from the past.
Head coach Paul McFarland’s Frontenacs
became the first Kingston team since 1998 to win
a playoff round — ending the longest drought in
Canadian Hockey League history.
The round 1, game 5 crowd at the Rogers K-Rock
Centre began chanting ‘Go, Fronts, Go’ over the final
two minutes as the Frontenacs closed out the series
with authority, beating the Generals 6-0.
“It was amazing. With a minute left we stood up
and the fans got behind us,” McKeown said.
“I know the city is as happy as we are about this
win. Credit to them. They got behind us. They were
awfully loud.”
McKeown, Spencer Watson, Lucas Peressini,
Lawson Crouse and Ryan Verbeek were Frontenacs
who had come so agonizingly close to a series win
in 2014 against Peterborough. The Petes came from
three games down to win four straight.
On Friday night the Frontenacs took care of
business.
“It was a special moment. I haven’t witnessed that
at all in my four years here. Definitely huge,’’ Watson
said.
“I think all the boys really gave [the victory] to the
fans. They deserve it.”
McFarland said afterwards he congratulated the
players on taking the first step in the playoffs.
“It’s one step. We are going to enjoy it [Friday
night] and then get ready for the next series,”
McFarland said.
“This group believes in each other. It’s a good first
step for us.”
Last Friday the Frontenacs, after a 4-3 overtime
loss in Oshawa Thursday, were in a position to win a
playoff series before the home crowd for the first time
since 1998 when Kingston beat the Oshawa Generals
in a seventh game. Frontenacs assistant coach John
Goodwin was the Generals head coach that season.
On Friday, the Frontenacs had to fend off a robust
first period from the Generals. They did so with the
goaltending of Jeremy Helvig and the feisty return to
the lineup of Kingston native Verbeek.
Helvig stopped a penalty shot in the game’s first
three minutes and Verbeek, after being a healthy
scratch for two games, scored the only goal of the first
period.
Goals by Stephen Desrocher, Crouse, Watson and
Warren Foegele blew it open in the second period.
Foegele added his second of the game and eighth of
the series in the third period.
Watson finished with five points and Michael Dal
Colle had four assists.
It was Helvig’s penalty-shot stop on Anthony Cirelli
that played an important part in the victory.
“I just cleared my head for the penalty shot and
made the save,” Helvig said. “I had to be ready and
focused (for the game) and I was focused and ready
for the big win.”
As big as Helvig’s saves in the first period were,
so, too, was the Verbeek goal. He was out of the lineup
for two games after taking an undisciplined penalty
in Game 2. Verbeek came back into the lineup with
determination and grit. He tipped a shot by Jason
Robertson past Jeremy Brodeur at 13:11 for what
turned out to be the game-winner and series-winner.
“To me that first one might have been the
difference in the hockey game just because nothing
was really going on and they were pressing,” McKeown
said. “Beeker really got the momentum under us.”
“Ryan was excellent. That’s how he has got to play
each and every night,” McFarland said. “He was a
difference maker. We’re going to win a lot of hockey
games if he continues to play his position that way.”
After the Verbeek goal and Helvig’s 11 saves got
the Frontenacs out of the first up 1-0, the Frontenacs
scored four goals in less than nine minutes in the
second period to take over the game.
“It was a tight first period and after that our
momentum came,” Watson said. “Once we got the
first goal (in the second period by Desrocher on a
5-on-3 advantage on a power play) the floodgates
opened. It was a cool feeling.”
“That’s our takeover period,” McKeown said. “We
want to get on teams, use our five-man forecheck.
That’s the strength of our team.”
“We talked about the second period being our
takeover period all year. Our guys worked hard to learn
how to play in the second period. Tonight was a great
example,” McFarland said.
McFarland said it was the complete game he
expected by his team.
“We’ve talked all year about being resillient and
responding. Good teams don’t want to lose two games
in a row in the playoffs,” he said.
“There wasn’t one person in our dressing room
or the Kingston Frontenacs organization family that
doubted this team tonight. We knew we’d get the job
done.”
McFarland called a timeout in the second period
when the Frontenacs were going on a 5-on-3 powerplay
advantage. He said he wanted to give his power
play unit a rest.
“We knew it was going to be a crucial sticking
point in the game. Out best guys capitalized and made
a great play.”
Desrocher’s first goal of the series made it 2-0.
Crouse followed 43 seconds later with another powerplay
goal on Brodeur.
A couple of terrific pin-down shifts by Verbeek,
Conor McGlynn, Cody Caron and then Ted Nichol,
Ryan Cranford and Robertson allowed the Frontenacs
to get two line changes against some tired Generals.
Watson got loose in front and ended Brodeur’s night
with his third goal of the series.
Oshawa coach Bob Jones brought Justin Nichols
in, hoping for a momentum switch. It didn’t work.
Seven seconds after the Watson goal, Foegele
greeted Nichols with a low shot to the corner.
