Leeds United vs
Huddersfield Town
Pokémon Red/Blue - 1996 - 1999
You start in Pallet Town where you meet
Professor Oak and his grandson, who is
your rival. You are then introduced to the
starter Pokémon, Bulbasaur, Squirtle and
Charmander. Your rival, as usual, picks the
starter that has the type advantage over yours.
You battle your rival, and after beating him,
you then move on from Pallet town and travel
the Kanto region, stopping ‘Team Rocket’
along the way.
You start in New Bark town and you are sent
on an errand to collect a mysterious egg from
Mr. Pokémon. Meanwhile, a red-haired boy is
staring through the window of Professor Elm’s
lab. As you give the mystery egg to Elm, the
boy steals a starter Pokémon from the lab. Just
after you have picked your starter, the boy
selects a starter that has the type advantage.
Once again, you have to stop ‘Team Rocket’.
The game begins with the player inside a truck
packed with boxes. The truck stops, you step
out of the truck into your new hometown,
Littleroot. You go visit your neighbour, who is
Professor Birch’s daughter, May. After you go
rescue Professor Birch who is attacked. You
travel through the Hoenn region to stop ‘Team
Magma/Aqua’.
Review
This game is a timeless classic but is not a
Pokémon game that has caught my attention
as much as the others in the series. As the first
games, they’ve become quite popular not only
for their nostalgia, but also for the number of
glitches present. However, being the first in the
series, I feel that ‘Red and Blue’ were somewhat
lacking features.
Score – 7/10
Pokémon Gold/Silver - 1999 - 2001
Review
This game, unfortunately didn’t really stand
out to me, I agree that it has some really nice
features, but nothing that really changed the
game for me. However, I do not dislike this
title; I feel it was a great sequel and that GAME
FREAK did a great job keeping the attention of
Pokémon fans.
Score – 6/10
Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire - 2002 - 2003
Review
This game is an incredible title in the series, it
keeps you wanting to play right until the end.
The map is colourful and there is a lot of terrains,
and weather conditions which take effect
in battle. This game introduced double battles,
forming new ways of gameplay.
Score – 10/10

Aston Lamb reviews and celebrates the past 20 years of Pokémon
GAME FREAK’s hugely successful title, Pokémon, burst on to the scene in Japan in 1996 with the
games ‘Pokémon Red’ and ‘Pokémon Green’. After 20 years and 6 generations of main games
spreading on to 5 different consoles, Pokémon has finally reached the age of 20.
Pokémon has become one of Nintendo’s biggest published series of games, alongside other series’
such as ‘Super Mario Bros.’ and ‘The Legend Of Zelda’. Pokémon has become known to the entire
world over the past 20 years, and to commemorate it, here is a chronological timeline of each
game, and a review of each game (excluding remakes and spin-offs).
Pokémon Diamond/Pearl 2006 - 2010
The game begins by showing a news report of
a red Gyarados being found in a lake, so you
and your friend go looking for it. However,
wild Starly begin to attack you, and Proffesor
Rowan had left his bag with the three starter
pokémon by the lake, leaving you no choice
but to use them. You also have to stop Team
Galactic from creating a new universe.
You start in your bedroom, you are woken up
by a Fletchling. After this, you get dressed and
visit your friends in Aquacorde town. Here,
your friends give you the chance to pick your
starter, and a your nickname. One rival takes
the starter with type advantage, and one picks
the starter with a disadvantage. From here,
you travel through Kalos, stopping Team Flare
in your way, as they want to destroy Earth by
blowing it up, to create a new one where only
Team Flare exists. It’s as rediculous as it sounds.
Review
This game is okay, but doesn’t stand up to its
predecessor. The game inplements some nice
features, such as 3D models, using the new
capabilities of the Nintendo DS. Also, the story
line is interesting and gripping as the game
does get quite tense towards the end.
Score 8/10
Pokémon Black/White - 2010 - 2012
This game takes you through the Unova region
where you are gifted your starter Pokémon
from Professor Juniper, you have 2 rivals,
Bianca and Cheren and together, you go on a
journey to stop Team Plasma, who are against
the “liberation of Pokémon”. The character
‘N’ is part of ‘Team Plasma’ realises that what
they’re doing is wrong.
Pokémon X/Y - 2013 - Present
Review
This game was a bit disappointing, the story
got a bit repetitive as Team Plasma appeared
every second for the same reason, some
Pokémon lacked creativity and the game
lacked new features. It showed signs of the
Pokémon franchise possibly turning stale.
Score - 5/10
Review
‘X/Y’ was a refreshment to the franchise,
introducing the first 3D Pokémon game
made entirely of 3D sprites. Also, Mega
Evolution was introduced creating a
great new way to play Pokémon. This
game is captivating, and is made even
better by the 3D capabilties of the 3DS.
This game took care of speculations
that the franchise was stale.
Score - 10/10

K-Pop (Korean Pop)
Fan of K-pop and J-rock Heather Carritt finds out more about how k-pop and J-rock began,
how Big Bang and The Gazette became popular and interviews another k-pop fan about
why they enjoy listening to the music and why Big Bang is one of the artists they listen to.
According Billboard.com Korean pop more
commonly known as K-pop was first started
up by the formation of the first ‘idols’ group
in the 1990s. It all started in 1992 when a
group called Seo Taiji and Boys, a trio of
hip-hop singer/rappers who fused American
pop music with Korean lyrics had their
debut. With their ability to mix Eastern and
Western music sounds together; Seo Taiji and
Boys became immensely popular in Korea.
The entertainment companies in Korea saw
their popularity as well as the opportunities
for profit. These companies decided to get
involved in the new style of music and began
creating groups similar to Seo Taiji and Boys.
This eventually led to the formation of Big
Bang who is a very popular k-pop group in
both the east and the west.
K-pop is renowned for its well put together
videos that show the differences in the industry
compared to the USA and UK. A lot of
K-pop fans enjoy watching these sometimes
dramatic and creative videos that go along
Kind permission from Teokki (Rokiei)
with the catchy and unique music. Some
k-pop artists are talented at dancing and a
lot of the more recent ones such as Exo and
BTS spend time learning complicated dance
routines for their music videos as well as for
live shows. This makes watching their videos
more enjoyable and their live shows more exciting
as their international fans know they’re
going to see something more unique and
different from what they’re used to seeing in
their own countries.
Big Bang is an incredibly popular K-pop
group and has had a large amount of success
globally. According to their K-pop Wikia
page they were formed in 2006 by an entertainment
company called YG Entertainment.
The group consist of the members G Dragon
(GD), T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung and Seungri;
the group officially debuted on August 19,
2006. Their debut was a moderate success as
their first Korean album sold 48,000 copies.
Big Bang had their first major breakthrough
with the release of their first extended play
‘Always’
in 2007,
which their
number one
song ‘Lies’
came from.
In 2008
Big Bang
released
their first
Japanese
album
and in the
same year
won three
awards at
the MTV
Video Music Awards Japan.
Big Bangs members have also released
their own solo albums; Taeyang was the first
out of the group that released a solo album
called ‘Hot’ in 2008 which also featured
G Dragon and various other K-pop artists.
G Dragon debuted his first solo album in
2009 called ‘Heartbreaker’ and was the most
successful of the year. G Dragon and T.O.P
came together and made an album together
which was released in 2010. Seungri released
his first solo album in 2011 and debuted in
Japan with his second solo release as a solo
artist. Daesung was the last of the Big Bang
members to release his solo album which
debuted in 2013.
According to hellokpop.com Fan clubs in
Korea are seen in a different way to western
fan clubs as they play a big role in the K-pop
industry and create their own names and
colours that represent the band. Big Bangs
fans named themselves the V.I.P after one of
the bands singles and hold yellow crown light
sticks and black and white banners when at
their concerts and live shows as they have no
official colour.
Unlike Se7en
whose fans
call themselves
‘Lucky
Se7en’
and are
associated
with
the colour
Lime green.
Why listen to Korean Pop music?
A K-pop fan tells Heather Carritt when they first started listening to K-pop and why they
enjoy listening to it.
Q: When did you start listening to K-Pop?
A: I started listening to K-Pop in 2007. The first two artists I
listened to were Se7en and Epik high.
Q: What do you like about Big Bang?
A: Big Bang is an awesome band. Their music has gone worldwide
and a lot of people listen to it because it is popular.
5
Q: Why do you listen to K-Pop?
A: It is very unique because the music videos are different
compared to music videos from the USA or the UK. The music
video adds more features as it looks dramatic in love songs, it
uses a crazy and wild theme like Big Bang- Bang Bang Bang.
The rhythm of the music sounds better than the USA or the UK
too because most songs here sound similar even though they are
sung by different artists.
Q: What is your favourite Big Bang song/album?
A: My favourite songs are Let me hear your voice and Still
alive.
Q: What other K-Pop artists do you listen to?
A: BTS, Outsider, Epik high, Exo K, Seventeen, Se7en, 4 minute,
Shinee and Super Junior
J-Rock (Japanese Rock)
Rockmusic.mu shows that Japanese rock
or J-rock bands started up in the 1960s and
were trying to recreate the sounds of band
from America and the UK as well as other
countries. The website also mentions how
Japanese rock music began to throughout
the years. It began to change in the 1970s as
the style became more folk orientated and
most of the artists became singer/songwriters
with their own style. However in the 1980s
Japanese artists began to change their look
as well as their sounds. J-rock bands started
referring to their looks and style as visual Kei,
which refers to a more outlandish fashion and
makeup. Visual Kei is still popular in J-rock
music today as Japanese culture is largely
linked with Japanese music.
The Gazette is a Japanese rock band
known for their bold looks as they are one
of the more popular bands in Japan and have
introduced the concept of visual Kei bands
to other countries. Originally from Kanagawa
in southern Japan the band formed early
in 2002 and are now signed to Sony music
records. The band consists of Ruki (vocals),
Reita (bass), Uruha (lead guitar), Aoi (rhythm
guitar), the bands drummer Yune left in
2003 and was replaced by Kai. According
to jpopasia.com shortly after signing to PS
Company label The Gazette released their
first EP, Cockayne Soup in May 2003. The
band’s debut album, ‘Disorder’ was released
in October 2004 and spent the rest of the year
touring. They released their second full-length
album in February 2006 and played their first
live show out of Asia in Germany in July. In
2008 The Gazette released two singles called
‘Guren’ and ‘Leech’ which both landed #1
Japanese rock bands usually change their
looks and styles throughout the years. The 4. Filth In The Beauty
Gazette does this regularly with different
hair styles, makeup and clothing that make 5. Guren
them unique as a band. The Gazette also
keeps some of their appearance the same for 6. Reila
example the bassist Reita has a cloth band
covering his nose and has kept up with the 7. Inside Beast
look although it has recently changed to a
Gazette changes his style the most and can
change it a couple of times in a year.
EARLY FESTIVAL
As you may know, festival season is coming up in the next few months, and as usual it’ll be here before you
know it. So I’ve taken it upon myself to create an early festival guide so you’re prepared in time for once.
1First and foremost, you need
to buy your ticket! We all have
that one friend who queues
to get their wristband then
realises their ticket is at
home. So be prepared, get
it in advance and keep it in a
safe place.
Next up is a sleeping bag,
3 those summer nights get
surprisingly cold! Sleeping bags
last forever and are great not
only to keep yourself in during
the night, but any possessions
that you want to keep safe such
as your money and phone. A
blowup bed is also useful as
sleeping on the ground isn’t
comfortable; blow up beds
make a festival almost a luxury.
2Secondly, you will need
a tent. You have to have
somewhere to sleep when
you get there, Clas Ohlson sell
tents at bargain prices, which
will last you at least 2 festivals.
To go with your tent, extra tent
pegs are always a good idea in
c a s e o f e m e r g encies! You can
get a pack of 10 from
Poundworld that will last the
weekend.
One of the most important
4 items to get is WELLIES!
Living in England we’ve all
become aware of the fact
rain is inevitable, it could
be 30 degrees out but it’ll
still rain. With festivals being
in fields and thousands of
people walking around them
all day it gets very messy very
quickly. If you want to be super
protected from the mud,
Hunter wellies will be your best
friend – they’re hard wearing
and last a lifetime. If you’re on a
budget then Primark will
be perfect. You can get
a pair of wellies that will
last the festival season for
a tenner.
Money is important at a
6 festival; however don’t bring
over the odds. If you want
to buy merchandise at the
festival then have a look into
the prices fro m years before
to work out how much you
need to bring to buy what
you want. It is also useful
to bring an extra amount
of money in case you run
out of food/drink, want to
buy some funky sunglasses or
need to replace any clothes
or camping equipment.
Remember! Food and drink at
festivals costs so bring plenty of
your own supplies.
5It’s always a good idea
to bring an old phone,
something you won’t mind
losing or breaking. A Nokia
brick is perfect. It’s useful for if
you lose a friend and need to
get in contact with them. In
case of wanting to take pictures
which you will be unable to
do on your 1800’s phone take
disposable cameras! They’re
lightweight, easy to keep
with you and if you were to
lose them you’re not losing
something expensive and
precious! They also take cool
1990’s grunge images. You
can get disposable cameras
from Max Spielmann.
Hygiene is key! Don’t
7 forget baby wipes and
hand sanitizer, chances are
you’re going to get covered
in mud and might not be
brave enough to face festival
showers so washing with
baby wipes is a way to stay
clean and fresh. You’ll also
be using public toilets, so
you need sanitizer! You can
pick either of these items up
from your local supermarket
cheaply. Supermarket basics
work fine.

7
GUIDE 2016
This one’s fairly obvious but
8 the amount of people who
forget is ridiculous! Chances are
your clothes will be covered in
mud and food by the end of the
first day and I’m afraid there are
no washing machines so make
sure you have a top for every
day and at least 2 or 3 pairs of
bottoms. Always pack more
socks than you need, somehow
you will lose at least 4 pairs and
the others will be wet through
so bring a big enough supply so
you can change them during
the day if needs be.
Here’s some advice from festival
goers for your first time.
Elliott Horne, 18 – If I was to go to a festival again, I’d definitely
take more food and water because when you run out of that
you’re in a bit of trouble. As well as that I’d take more money as I
ran out early on and it’s a bit of a pain.
Amy Galloway, 18 – Be well prepared!
Christian Arcabowicz, 20 – If I went to a festival again I’d
definitely say take wellies as I didn’t and regretted it. Also, bring
more socks because your socks will get ruined and make sure
you close your tent when you go to sleep so you don’t end up
getting rained on like I did!
Steven Bedford-Carter, 18 – Do your own thing!
10
The British weather can
be surprising at times, so
pack sun protectiohn! Even on
a cloudy day the sun can burn
you as I learnt the hard way. So
make sure you’re stocked up
on sun-cream just in case you
get a lucky day where the sun is
shining. it is supposedly summer
after all!
9
Bring two
or three
empty (or full, your choice, just
heavier to carry!) water bottles
with you to fill up during the day
to stay hydrated. It’s easy to
forget to drink water throughout
the day - all the festivals I have
been to have filling stations in
the main arena so you’re never
without. It’s also really useful to
have a bottle of water in your
tent for brushing your teeth with
or using to wash with.
Alex Wilson, 17 – You can never be too prepared, check the
weather before you go and whether it’s indoor or outdoor. If it is
an outdoor festival prepare for the worst especially if it’s a British
festival – don’t over pack as you have to think about carrying it
all. Also, paracetamol is a necessity.
Jamie Keith, 19 – My advice would be just see how it goes, I
showed up with money that I’d saved, a few tins of beans and
some beer and it went absolutely great.
Tabitha, 17 – Be prepared, bring wellingtons!
Derbyshire based metal
festival, Bloodstock spoke
to me about festivals, here’s
what they said...
“Many people return year after year to meet
up with friends they’ve made in previous
years.”
For those of you into metal, they
said “We encourage all metal fans
to come check out Bloodstock at
least once to see what they’ve been
missing!”

IS VINYL BACK IN
TOWN?
Cian Smith investigates the recent rise in vinyl sales
and which format is better CD, vinyl or MP3.
Here we are in the in the 21st century. A technological boom period
in the last 15 years has seen the way we listen to music change
forever. 2001 saw the introduction of the iPod, a revolutionary
new product designed to give us access to a library of up to 1000
songs at any one time, a far cry from the record shops and LP’s
of yesterday’s world. So why in 2015 are we seeing vinyl make a
comeback?
In 2014 sales of vinyl albums were at their highest in twenty
years with over 1.3 million units sold - an astonishing number
when we consider how easily we can access music for free.
Streaming services such as Spotify, Deezer and TIDAL allow us
to listen to almost any artist on the planet at the push of a button.
To help me find the answer to my conundrum, I grabbed my
copy of The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
album on vinyl and prepared to play it. Before I even took the LP
from its sleeve I was distracted by the album cover. As I had not
played the album in a while I forgot about the fantastic art work
on the cover. I was already lost in a maze of faces trying to name
all of them. This, to me, is like looking at the menu in a restaurant,
the anticipation of enjoying the food even before it has arrived.
Removing the LP from its sleeve was an adventure in itself, peeling
back the thin paper to reveal the black disc, taking care not to put
my hand on the grooves, gently lowering the LP onto the turntable
of my record player. I lifted the arm with my little finger, lowering
it down like I was landing a helicopter. The crackling began as I
took my seat looking forward to enjoying the record.
It was like an occasion, making the decision to listen to the
record felt like more than just something to do when I’m not doing
anything. It’s not just listening to the record that feels like an
occasion, it’s the actual choice you’ve made beforehand. Choosing
a record feels like a heartbreaking decision and a commitment you
need to stick to.
Walking along the rack in the record shop is like a trip to the
sweet shop. Lots of different and wonderful colours and faces

with illegal file sharing being so easy nowadays?
“Yeah I do, because MP3 s are so easily shared, so easily accessed,
you know, when people choose that accessibility over security,
because the only way someone is going to pirate a vinyl is to get into
your house and take it from you. It’s the only way they’re going to
get a free copy. With MP3s it’s a simple copy and paste function, and
they can email that file to whoever they want. When websites like
Deezer and Spotify became big it was easy for them to take the MP3
from that website and share it with their friends. People saw websites
like Deezer as illegal and tried to shut them down because they were
taking artists’ music and were giving it away; taking artists’ music
and people were paying nothing, just sharing it. If you take an artist’s
song you pay for the artist’s song and you pay £2 or whatever, and
you get that as an MP3 and share it with seven or eight people,
you’ve cheated an artist out of £16 - it doesn’t sound like much but
when thousands upon thousands or even millions of people are doing
it, it does lead to an effect. It leads to artists thinking, ‘Is there any
hope for us?’ and that MP3s could be the end of artists. They might
be the make or break so they are quite a scary thing but they’re also
a necessity.”
That’s great. Thanks for having a chat with me Ciaran.
Ciaran Harper with his band
trying to grab your attention: Elvis Presley’s If I Can Dream, Oasis
– What’s the Story Morning Glory? Jeff Lynne’s ELO with Alone
in the Universe. There are so many choices but you must pick the
right one. Before I went further I wanted to get a second opinion,
So I asked musician Ciaran Harper (Pictured) what he thought.
Why do you think MP3 is better than vinyl?
“It’s easier you know, the idea that you can have terabytes of information
and store an entire music library on one device. It attracts a
lot of people over going out and spending. People spend £15 on a
vinyl and then have to make space in their house in order to store
the vinyl. And you’re going to have to buy a record player and
that’s quite a lot these days as well. It’s more about accessibility
than it is quality because some vinyls have better quality than MP3
because of MP3 is compressed and squished down to be that small.
People will choose MP3 over vinyl because of its ease of access
and you’re still getting the music that you want even if it is lower
quality.”
Secondly, why do you think vinyl has made a recent comeback?
I mean, in 2014 vinyl had over one point three million
sales and I’m curious to see why you think that is.
“Vinyl is more of a fashion statement than anything, looking
scruffy came back in, 2014 was the year of the hipster and with that
came the idea of vinyls. People took an interest in vinyl and decided,
you know, they’re old. You get a battered vinyl out of a sleeve
and it’s just more a fashion statement than an actual utility.”
Well, that segues quite nicely into my next question: given
that you are a musician yourself, would you release on vinyl if
you were given the opportunity?
“Yeah definitely because… with vinyl being so popular these
days and with it still being a fashion statement and people still
buying vinyl, artists like, Arctic Monkeys, Mhuse are still releasing
on vinyl, it just gives us another outlet. It gives us a stable income,
because it’s coming straight to us and doesn’t have to go through
websites or companies or anything like that we get (the) majority
of the profit. So it’s always going to be an attractive outlet. It has
opened up a whole new stream of revenue for artists, it’s given
them something… it’s given them hope really, that they will be able
to make a sustainable living as a musician.”
Do you think that MP3 has taken away a bit of that living
I went about listening to the same album (the Sgt Pepper’s Lonely
Hearts Club Band) on my phone. Straight away I realised the album
artwork was ruined by the small screen and the magic was lost
immediately. It seems for accessibility we lose quality. Speaking of
quality, the sound of the music in comparison to the vinyl album was
very good. Each and every one of the songs seemed to be clearer and
less bumpy. The songs never got stuck and I didn’t have to flip the
record over every time the album reached the halfway point.
As the album was playing I could appreciate every last note while
not having to fiddle with the knob on my record player to make sure
that the record played through both speakers or having to worry
whether the needle on my record player was going to break.
However, as I was listening to my music I had this feeling that the
record lacked a certain innocence and nakedness that I love about
my LP. The crackles in the sound, the sudden change in pitch that
the record has, the primitive recording techniques along with lack
of modern editing software. These factors all make the listening feel
even better, and somehow create a more honest experience.
I then went online to have a look on YouTube to see how many
artists have published their music on the site. I first searched Eric
Clapton using the site’s built in search engine. The first result was
a video, showing the star playing one of his biggest hits, a ballad
showing his love for model Pattie Boyd - Layla. The video was not
uploaded by Clapton’s label, or his official YouTube channel, but by
a fan. Although they may not know it, fans like these are stealing the
artist’s work by doing this.
Music piracy is nothing new. Before the internet we had bootleg
copies of records, made by either stealing, ripping and burning a
copy onto a blank CD. Alternatively, fans recorded live performances.
Although most artists are opposed to this some see it as a way for
poorer people to listen to good music for free. Liam Gallagher said,
“I don’t mind it. I hate all these big, silly rock stars who moan--at
least they’re downloading your music...and paying attention, know
what I mean? You should appreciate that. What are you moaning
about?”
This might be a reason people still listen to vinyl, people who want
to support an artist decide they want a physical copy of the music for
their money so they’re willing to pay just that little bit extra for their
music to own this music.
Does this large piece of plastic help you show your love for your
artist? Clearly if you want to listen to vinyl it’s going to be an expensive
choice. It’s no secret that vinyl records are more expensive than
MP3 or CDs along with the cost of a record player and the goods you
need to maintain the records and record player.
Maybe we will never find out what it is about record and vinyl that
makes us want to collect and treasure these fragments of the past.
Who knows, maybe one day we will scrap our iPods and CDs in
favour of these time honoured creations.

Vintage is really taking off, especially in
Leeds. Molly Wood went to
interview Cloe at Pop Boutique about
her love of vintage as well as a quick
guide to to incorporating vintage into
your wardrobe on the cheap.

This? It’s vintage, darling...
11
Cloë tells us about
her love of vintage
How did you get into Vintage?
I’ve always been into vintage. When I
was little my mum took me charity shopping
and that’s how it started.
What is your favourite era?
I think my favourite is 70’s. I’m a big fan
of the bohemian look and flares and patterns
and that sort of thing, yeah *laughs*.
Who do you take the biggest inspiration
from?
I wouldn’t say a particular person, I just
really like the 70’s look but I guess someone
like Stevie Nicks is pretty cool, someone
like her.
What is the best thing about working in
Vintage Retail?
It’s always nice when you get a delivery
in and you get to have a rummage through
the clothes and you get to feel the clothes,
that’s always good. It’s very laid back here
and I work with a really good group of
people.
What is your best vintage purchase?
I’ve got so many. Recently
actually I went to an Oxfam in Harrogate
and upstairs they’ve got a specialist vintage
selection and I got a really beautiful, like,
Indian embroidered Kaftan with beautiful,
gold embroidered onto it. That was a really
good buy, it was only like £20.
“Leeds’ amazing
collection of shops
will never fail you”
Leeds loves vintage
In your opinion, what is the worst
vintage led trend?
I don’t think there’s a worst vintage
trend, it’s just personal preference. For me
personally, I’ve never been a fan of the 80’s.
It’s just, some of it is quite garish but like I
said, it’s just personal preference.
Do you think Leeds has a good vintage
carry on?
Yeah, we’ve got a few good shops
definitely, it’d be nice if there was some
more and maybe more charity shops would
be good but we’ve got a nice selection to go
around, yeah.
Incorporating vintage into your
wardrobe is a lot easier than you think.
Whether you’re into skirts and dresses
or Jeans and shorts, Leeds’ amazing
collection of shops will never fail you.
No longer are you ridiculed for being
seen in second hand clothing, you’re
looked on as someone who is cool, well
dressed and is slaying the fashion game
#OnPoint.
From Pop Boutique and its vintage
inspired line, to Blue Rinse and it’s never
ending stock of vintage classics and onto
the monthly vintage kilo sale where £15
will get you a full outfit, you have so much
free reign to not only look good, but save
the environment by buying somebodies
preloved clothing.
You’re in good company buying
vintage with celebrities from Alexa Chung
to Harry Styles being connoisseur’s of
hunting out the best vintage whilst they
jet around the world. However, for you
guys sat reading this in rainy Leeds, don’t
worry, there is something there for you!
Stripes never go out of style and always
add an efortless, Parisian spin to a simple
jeans and boots or skirts and flats combo,
as Alexa knows well, with it pretty much
being her uniform (above).
However, you might be into florals, a
big trend for 2016.Teamed with a leather
biker and a fedora (left) you’ll look
effortlessly 70’s with a rocky spin, perfect.

Make-up artist Lauren Hare gives me quick and easy tips and tricks to get a
naturally beautiful look and you can still have that extra ten minutes in bed!
Eyeliner – A little bit of eyeliner goes a long way, a thin
line and a small flick can really bring your eyes out without
using heavy eyeshadows. Using black liquid eyeliner, start at
the inner corner of your eye and draw a thin line along your
eyelid to the outer corner. For the flick you need to draw a diagonal
line from the corner of your water line about 1cm long,
connect the two lines together and fill it in. You can make your
eyeliner thicker if you wish and to clean up any messy bits use
a wet cotton bud. Finish your eye makeup with a thin layer of
mascara to make them eyes pop!
Eyebrows – Everybody has a different shape to
their natural brow. With tweezers pluck the around your
natural eyebrow shape to get rid of those little unnecessary
hairs. Get a thin angled brush and a powder that is
similar to your hair colour and fill in your brows lightly,
an angled brush gives great definition. You can also use
an eyebrow pencil or eyebrow wax but I would recommend
powder as it isn’t too heavy and looks natural.
#BEAUTY
TRENDS
Lips – No matter how big or plumped your
lips are, using a lip liner will make them stand
out and look fuller. Here I have used a dark
nude liner to outline my lips and filled them
in with a subtle matte lipstick. Nude colours
suit any skin colour and give your lips a nice
natural finish.
Finished Look – Now your three main
features are finished, add a little blush to the
cheeks to give you that all round natural glow.
Remember to use primer before applying any
makeup for a longer lasting look. For a night
look add a deeper shade lipstick and some
eyeshadow to bring out that inner diva!

Lauren Hare Interview
You have been a makeup artist for 3 years now, what
5 products have you always kept in your makeup
bag?
“Deffo a lipstick, good primer, concealer, mascara and lipgloss.
Every girl needs those things in their makeup bag”
What’s the easiest tip to get the best eyeliner?
“I always use masking tape at the corner of my eye to get the
flick, it giver you a cleaner line”
Matte lipsticks are so popular now, why do you think
that is?
“They stay on all day and give your makeup a great finish,
matte is my favourite”
What’s the difference between your natural and glam
look?
“I use a lot of nude shades in my natural look and just a little
mascara, when my inner diva comes out I’m usually wearing a
red lipstick and smokey eyes”
What’s your morning routine before you apply your
makeup?
“I always exfoliate and moisturise on a night, ALWAYS take
your makeup off before bed. Then I use a primer before applying
any foundation”
Big lips are in fashion at the moment, how can you
naturally make your lips look bigger?
“I just use a lip liner, it’s quick and easy and you can even
change your lip shape if you want, sometimes I use lip liner as
a lip colour, it’s like matte and stays on all day”
Finally, what is the secret to good contour?
“Cream, I always use cream to contour, it just blends a lot better
than powder. Don’t put a lot of foundation on first because
you don’t want your makeup looking heavy and make sure you
clean your brushes!”
16
The Basics
Self-appointed fashion gurus Charlie and Libby give
their advice on how students can improve their style.
Men’s fashion should combine classic and contemporary,
be fashionable with a bit of flair. But above all you should
reach a style that works for you and we’re here to help you.
Sports
Two things important to remember when
building your wardrobe: How your clothes
fit and the type of look you want to achieve.
If your clothes fit you well, regardless of the
price, the outfit will look like it was made for you.
So many men make the mistake of
just grabbing clothes off the rack and
it ends up being one size too big and it
changes the shape of your body entirely.
So many underestimate a good fit, it
makes you look smarter, well put together
and is much more flattering to your body.
You then want to think about the type of
look you are trying to achieve. If you want
to be casual suits and ties are obviously not
fitting into that category, however another
common mistake men tend to make is
dressing too casual. While comfort is key,
don’t let your style suffer for the sake of
it. Many fail to realise a slim fit pair of
jeans and flannel top can be just as comfy
as those old jogging bottoms and hoodie.
The sporty look is perfect for when you’re
running late for college and you need an outfit
that’s quick and easy but doesn’t look like it
was just thrown together. While tracksuits
may not be appropriate for all situations,
when you’re just sitting in class you want to
be comfortable and ready for anything, pairing
some tracksuit bottoms with a plain tee and
trainers is a basic outfit that looks planned no
matter how unprepared you may have been.
“Give an outfit
that something
extra”
ACCESSORIES AREN’T JUST FOR GIRLS
Hats, jewellery and bags aren’t just for girls,
guys can wear them too, and a good accessory
can tie your whole outfit together. For any
look I would suggest carrying a bag, shoving
everything in your pockets is just going to leave
you un-organised with a pocket full of rubbish.
Whether it’s a ruck sack, back pack
or a satchel, there are tons of different
bags to suit any look you choose.
Smaller accessories look good too, a
good watch is a classic, your phone isn’t always
going to be charged and it takes no time at all
(mind the pun) to have a quick look at your wrist.
Also don’t be afraid of necklaces and
bracelets, a simple little chain around
your neck or just a plain bracelet can
really give an outfit that something extra.

17
Casual
The outfit we put together was simple and
stylish, pairing slim fit ripped jeans with a
grey turtle neck top. It gives the impression
of being stylish without trying too hard.
Throw on a khaki green bomber jacket
and you’re ready to go. This outfit can be
suitable for simply hanging out with the lads
or spending the day with your girlfriend.
This outfit can work for multiple
occasions. Simply swap out trainers
for some plain toe boots and the jacket
with a blazer and you’ve gone from a
day to night look with minimal effort.
“These classic
looks won’t be
going out of
fashion”
Smart
SHOES SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS
If you are going to invest in anything, invest in your shoes,
as the saying goes “you can tell a lot about a man by the
condition of his shoes”. Researchers at the University of
Kansas say that people can accurately judge 90 percent of a
stranger’s personality simply by looking at the person’s shoes.
So take care of them if you want to give the best impression.
When you’re looking for items of clothing to
add to your collection, while the urge to follow
the latest trend is a strong one think to yourself
“will I still want to wear this in 6 months?”
Simplicity is underrated, you want something
timeless, look at the clothes that never seem to
go away. Slim fit trousers and leather jackets
are effortlessly stylish and always in fashion.
And it’s not just about the style of
clothes, colour is important too. When
building up a new wardrobe it is important
to pick up neutrals, blacks, whites, greys
and blues which work well with every
colour; their understated appearance
allows them to be the base to any outfit.
For this look you will be ready for any
occasion, from a fancy meal with the family
to going on a date, this look will see you
through. You can still look smart and not
have to have the full three-piece suit. Pairing
blue jeans with a white shirt, grey blazer
and some brown leather brogues, this really
works for students in particular as most
of these clothing items will be sat in your
wardrobe so you won’t have to break the
bank buying anything new. This classic look
won’t be going out of fashion any time soon.
Confidence is key. Your style can be
whatever you want it to be, whether you
want to be outrageous and stand out or
simple and blend in, whatever makes you
feel comfortable is the style you should
choose. Having some confidence in your
outfit of choice can make all the difference
to how you wear it, how you carry yourself
and how others perceive you. Don’t
change your personal style for the sake of
others and wasting time on passing trends.

Eating For Less At
The Weekend
Hungry for new places to eat? We sent Belinda Dias and Saif
Ishafaq to find fresh restaurants in Leeds.
Leeds has a massive range of places to eat, with the presence of
Trinity Kitchen; the food available to students just got a whole lot
tastier.
However, here at Extrovert, we look for places that offer good food
without breaking your bank.
We set ourselves a mission to find the best places for students to eat
nice food that won’t leave you with half of your student loan missing.
We travelled around Leeds City Centre, looking for places where
we think students would enjoy visiting, be it for dinner or just a quick
lunch.
The weekend is the highlight of most students’ week. With work
and the educational side of life over for a blissful two days, we are
determined to make the most out of our weekends.
Most students spend this time by going out with friends, or even
having a lazy two days with Netflix and a pack of Walkers.
However, there is a recurring factor that pops up every weekend, no
matter what kind of activities come up: Food.
Everybody likes to go out and eat, be it for a cheeky nando’s, or for a
swanky meal with work friends.
Thankfully, Leeds offers a huge range of places to eat, but that
seems to be half the problem.
We struggle to find places that offer good and reasonably priced
food amongst the sea of café’s and fast food joints.
The problem with us students is that we’re terrible at managing our
cash.
No denying it, we are horrible with our money. Which is why
finding cheap places is so important to us here at Extrovert. (Some call
us stingy, but hey, I’ve got an extra £50 in the bank each month, what
have YOU got?)
Although we only go into detail about three restaurants, there are
many honourable mentions, which include: Peachy Keens, a buffet
styled restaurant where they cook the meat on your own table! Five
Guys, a brilliant burger place which a hub of student spending. And of
course, Trinity Kitchen, which offers a huge range of food.
Belinda and Saif found many places to eat, but there are three which
stood out to us most, and they are as follows:
Zizzi’s, Rola Wala and Turtle Bay. (More information regarding these
restaurants are shown on the opposite page)
and got the opnions of the customers of the same resturants we went
to.
“What I enjoy most about Rola
Wala is that it is all less than 500
calories so it’s all very healthy for
you and very quick to get.”
Caitlin, 18, Leeds.
“Zizzi’s provide a classy and
affordable experience with
wonderful service. A massive
variety to choose from but I very
Trinity Kitchen, Trinity Shopping Centre
Leeds, LS1 5AY
An Indian street food restaurant located in Leeds Trinity shopping
centre. Two options are offered between a roll or a bowl with different
fillings to choose from, offering a vegan or vegetarian alternative to
the meat. Every meal is full of flavour and very fillings and extremely
healthy with every option if under 500 calories.
You can see the food being made in front of you, so they easily cater
for your choices if you want more or less, everything is optional.
Pick a roll or a bowl: if you have a bowl you have a choice of rice
and then move on to picking your meat (or meat alternative) with a
choice of salad and extra toppings such as sauces, cheese or coconut.
It’s very affordable and quick, costing you no more than £10 for a
full meal with drink included. Great for a mid-shop pick me up.
At Rola Wala I chose a bowl with brown rice topped with chicken
tikka and sweet potato & lentil Gobi dressed with natural plain yoghurt
and mild mango sauce with a touch of lemon. It was just a burst of
flavour with a nice added kick too it. Very filling and lasted me a good
few hours before I felt peckish again.
This lovely and lively restaurant is labelled as a Caribbean social
restaurant. Turtle bay offer a wide range of foods including pulled
pork or even a nice selection of side dishes.
However, they specialise in One Pots which can be described as
’rich, slowly simmered & uniquely Caribbean’. They are a hotpot
mixture, with seven different combinations.
Wonderful and polite service, being greeted at the door and shown
to a table fairly quickly. The whole place has a really warm feel in
addition to a really quirky and vibrant layout with fun music to listen
too. Such a fun place to meet up with friends on the weekend!
I had the Street burger which consists of a season beefed burger
with pulled jerk pork sweet onion chutney, herb mayo, Caribbean slaw
with a side of Chips. It was flavour filled and meaty with added spice
but not too over powering with crisp freshly cooked chips.
A classic Italian restaurant with delicious affordable food. A fairly
popular restaurant chain with brands in many areas all over the UK.
Everything is traditional and fully Italian from the mouth-watering
pizza to the wonderful pasta dishes.
No matter what you get it is full of flavour and a wide selection of
vibrant drinks.
The kitchen can be seen from the seating area and can be quite
entertaining to watch.
A very good point about this establishment is that it’s rare you have to
wait more than twenty minutes for your food to arrive. Staff members
are very polite and helpful within the restaurant.
I had the calzone carne piccante with contained Spicy piccante
chicken, mini beef meatballs, mozzarella, mushroom, chilli, tomatoes
and Bolognese.
It was delicious and rich and very generous in portion size, lovely
for a nice relaxed meal after a busy week.
Terrible
Right look, I’m going
to level with you, I don’t
watch that much t.v, in fact
I watch next to none, what
with my aerial being broke
and every time I turn my
tv on to play ps4 I have to
manually stop my tv from
searching for analogue
channels each time.
So with this in mind you
may find yourself asking
“who do you think you
are, thinking you’re all big
and that making lists?”.
Saying this though, have
you ever sat on a Saturday
night, perhaps a few
days before pay day with
a frozen pizza flicking
mindlessly through the
channels because there’s
adverts on during yet
another rerun of Top
Gear on Dave and ended
up watching X Factor or
Britain’s Got Talent?
Then you see something
happen and think “What
the hell is going on here”
and find it mildly funny
but realise Top Gear is
back on and change back
to it.
Wait, forget all of that,
back to what I’m actually
doing here.
I’m looking at the worst
You know things that
you see and think ‘what
or thinking and should
they seek help?’
generically shocking.
DERBY DAY! DERBY DAY! D
Huddersfield return to Elland Road; LEEDS UNITED V HUDDERSFIELD TOWN
MATCH PREVIEW
HISTORY
CROWD TROUBLE
In typical Leeds United fashion, this season
has unsurprisingly not lived up to the fans’
ambitious expectations. Although starting
fairly well having not been defeated in their
first six fixtures (all be it 5 of them were
draws) it was a sense of false hope for the
loyal whites’ fans.
As it is every year the Leeds United faithful
were rejuvenated with hope that maybe this
year would be theirs, but four months and
a manager down the line yet again, it does
not seem to be the case. Having mustered
together only 8 wins since the start of the
season the fans are certainly very frustrated
as yet again Leeds sit 14th in the table. Not
only do the on-pitch issues frustrate the fans,
the constant lack of stability off the pitch has
been a huge problem at Leeds for years and
it doesn’t look like improving any time this
soon.
At the start of the season Huddersfield
started with 4 wins but then suddenly dropped
when they started falling back and losing
quite a few games. The manager Chris Powell
was then sacked and was replaced with
David Wagner. With the top goal scorer for
Huddersfield Town Nahki Wells has scored
11 goals for the terriers. Compared to last
season Huddersfield are more on form than
last season, however, they’re currently 17th in
the Championship table. They’re very close to
relegation with 11 points away. David Wagner
has made a few loans for the Terries hoping to
make a difference.
The day after Chris Powell was sacked the
club appointed David Wagner as head coach
who has previously worked with Liverpool
manager Jürgen Klopp. Wagner is the
first person born outside the British Isles to
manage the club in its 107-year history. So far
David Wagner has brought a lot of success for
Huddersfield as they have won 5 games, drew
3 and lost 6 while he has been manager. Huddersfield
won the league successfully three
times in a row which only three other teams
have done that in the history of the game.
They also won the FA Cup in 1922. Leeds
United is considered to be the club’s main
rival, with Huddersfield having the better
head-to-head record of the two teams. Only
21.2 miles separate Leeds and Huddersfield
but it is always a fierce affair when it comes
down to the football.
Both clubs fly the flag for the Yorkshire
Rose and have an incredible history between
them. Between 1963–1975, Leeds became
feared across the country and in Europe. Revie
guided them to two league championships,
an FA Cup, a League Cup, two European
Fairs Cups and a Charity Shield.
Leeds continued their dominance in
Europe for decades to come most recently
reaching the Champions League semi final
in 2001. This was then followed by possibly
the greatest declline of a football club in the
history of sports. 15 years, two relegations
and a promotion later, Leeds sit hovering
above relegation zone in the Championship
which is quite familiar for all Leeds fans.
With the continuous off-pitch protests over
the ownership at Leeds it does not look to improve
anytime soon... When will the sleeping
giant awaken?
The West Yorkshire derby is a massive game
for both teams so it has very high security
at the football game. The police force have
a “Sport” budget which covers all sports
so they can’t estimate how much the police
spend on football. It’s not possible to estimate
what they spend on football because it’s impossible
to estimate how well or bad a local
team is doing which affects the cost of the
police force.
Matty, 19, Huddersfield fan said: “I am
perfectly fine with how the system is now because
they should be no violence as so many
children attend the games, you’re meant to
enjoy the game not cause trouble.”
At Elland Road they make the Huddersfield
Town fans go to the stadium and get escorted
there. On derby days there’s a lot more police
force at the game due to previous violence.
The police prepare very early for these types
of games because there are so many of them.
Football fixtures utilise a combination of duty
staff, and SPS9 Special Police Services staff,
and are utilised when external bodies request
the services of the Police and pay for those
services.
The police do not want the fans drinking if
there’s a 12:30pm kick off as they don’t want
violence. They monitor the city centre eg with
sniffer dogs at the train station, horses at the
ground and even on the motorway.
Scott, 23, Leeds United supporter said: “I
think when it comes to the West Yorkshire
derby I understand why it is so strict but the
rivalry isn’t like it used to be so, it’s not as
violent. When I go to Huddersfield away I
have to go straight to the stadium and then
straight back home because they don’t let us
interact with the Huddersfield fans. I don’t
enjoy much as I used to.”

23
! DERBY DAY! DERBY DAY!
STABILITY
The last time Huddersfield played Leeds
United was back in November when
Huddersfield was under a bit of uncertainty
off the pitch.
Chris Powell had left the club just days
before the fixture and the rumoured new head
coach David Wagner was watching in the
stand. He was sacked for “failing to meet the
club’s objectives”.
Then the day after they appointed David
Wagner as head coach who worked with
Liverpool’s new manager Jürgen Klopp.
Wagner is the first person born outside the
British Isle to manage the club in their 107-
year history. Leeds United is considered to
be the club’s main rival, with Huddersfield
having the better head-to-head record of the
two teams.
Huddersfield have won 25 of the 61 derbies
between the two sides with 17 draws and
19 Leeds wins. Ever since Massimo Cellino
took charge at Elland Road in 2014, the club
has essentially been standing on one leg,
especially considering the on-going farce
with GFH Capital (The old owner).
Cellino already came with a rather large
reputation for being a bit of a different
character including things such as weird
superstitions.
Neil Redfearn was appointed on an initial
12-month contract with the option of a further
12 months, the contract also had a clause that
would see Redfearn return to the academy if
he was to leave his role as head coach.
This lasted from November to May which
is fairly impressive for Cellino but before
long in May speculation grew that Redfearn
has parted from his job as Leeds United’s
manager. So we get to our current head
coach (Steve Evans)who has had mixed start
considering all the issues in and around the
club.
ANDY BOOTH INTERVIEW
How did you get into a career in football?
I always wanted to be a footballer ever since I
could remember but my big break came when
I was scouted for Huddersfield Town at the
age of 15 when I was playing for my junior
team which was Elland Athletic.
What made you want to play for
Huddersfield Town?
I was a big fan of Steve Kindon when I was
growing up.
How does Huddersfield Town compare to
the other clubs you have played for?
It’s obviously the smallest club but the most
friendly and family orientated and not run as
much as a business like SWFC or Spurs.
How does it feel to be a Huddersfield Town
legend?
It’s great the supporters took me to their
hearts and supported me throughout my
career. It makes it a lot easier to play when
you have the fan’s backing. To be named a
legend by the fans is great that they have fond
memories of me.
What are your best moments playing for
Huddersfield Town?
The play-off win at Wembley in 1994-95
seasons in which I scored and the Cardiff
play-off final win has to be my best moments.
Why did you stop playing professionally?
Unfortunately I had a major back operation at
the age of 34 so I decided to retire.
Did you win any awards while playing for
Huddersfield, if so what?
I gained 4 England U21 caps, Player of the
Year a couple of times, named in the PFA
Team of the year.
Do you think the team is stronger
compared to last season?
If you’d have asked me a couple of months
ago I would have said last year’s squad
was stronger because we’d lost 3 or 4 of
our main players from last season but since
David(Huddersfield Town manager) has come
I believe he’s really turned it around.
What’s your opinion on the police security
at Leeds v Huddersfield or just in general?
I’m happy with the policing of the Leeds V
Hudds game. It’s always the most hostile
game of the season so we need more police
presence. In general we have no problems
with the West Yorkshire Police I think they
do a good job but saying that our club is very
family based so we don’t usually have any
problems that the stewards can’t handle.
Do you think that there should be any
changes to the team? If so what?
We probably could do with another striker but
apart from that I’m happy with the team.
Do you think the ticket prices are
reasonable for the Leeds v Huddersfield
game?
It’s the biggest game of the season so the
clubs put the prices up but the supporters will
still come and pay - that in my view is wrong.
Where do you think Leeds and
Huddersfield will finish in the league?
Hopefully both teams have a good season and
finish in the top half of the table I want all the
West Yorkshire teams to do well.
Score prediction for the Leeds v
Huddersfield?
