Seeking Participants for UCLA Research Study
on Long-Term Care
What is the purpose of the research? To learn about...
1. experiences between gay and lesbian (or non- heterosexual) older
adults and long-term care providers and
2. ideas about how long-term care providers can be responsive to lesbian
and gay older people.
Who can participate? Men who are at least 50 years old, have had
contact with long-term care providers, and EITHER:
• Identify as gay, OR BOTH
• have had only male sex partners over the past 20 years
• are only attracted to men
What does participation involve? If you volunteer for this study you will
be asked to participate in a one-on-one interview in which you will answer
questions about your experience of long-term care providers and ideas
about what it means for long-term care providers to be responsive to
lesbian and gay older adults. You will also be asked to provide feedback on
the researcher’s analysis at a later date. You will be able to withdraw from
the study at any time with no penalty. Each participant will receive $40. You
do NOT need to travel to UCLA to participate.
JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore ON VACATION!
This week Jersey is on vacation AGAIN!
One of the hardest working people in
Palm Springs entertainment.
So we thought we would say Thanks, from
the community. People often write to tell
us how much they enjoyed a show with
Jersey headlining or in the cast. She is
sassy, intelligent and you know you have
seen world class entertainment. Next time
you see her, let her know you appreciate
the work, ethics, and humor she brings to
the community each week.
What you might not know is that Jersey
has been a well known entity to the Desert
for over a decade, appearing at multiple
venues all over the desert. You name
it, and Jersey has probably performed
there. Currently, Jersey is performing regularly
at CCBC Resort and the wonderful
Georgie’s Alibi Azul Patio. Past venues
include Hard Rock Hotel, and most of
Arenas Blvd. To the hardest working
Bitch on heals!
Fuck those bitches, We love you!
OUTDOOR MUSIC
Music as an art form has not been discussed in
this column recently. One type of music event
provided each year about this time through
the Palm Springs Opera Guild is Opera In The
Park. This is the 18th year that Opera In The
Park has been performed in Palm Springs.
The Palm Springs Opera Guild was formed
in 1968. The co-founder was the French
coloratura soprano Lil Pons. The mission of
the Guild was is to provide operatic themed
events throughout the year, free of charge.
The Guild works with the Palm Springs Unified
School District to provide scholarships.
Opera Outreach targets students throughout
the area introducing them to operatic music.
The Vocal Competition provides scholarships,
which last year awarded nearly $30,000
in funding for students to pursue careers in
opera. Prime Time Outreach provides lectures
and performances at the Rancho Mirage
Library.
each performed spectacularly providing pieces
from a variety of operas and musicals.
The artists this year were: Nicholas Brownlee,
Jungwon Choi, Michelle Drever, Arnold
Livingston Geis, Joshua Guerroro, Ben Lowe,
Anna-Lisa Hackett, and Mario Rojas. They
performed individually and in ensembles.
The Opera Guild is a local organization that
should be recognized for their philanthropy
and educational endeavors in the community.
They provide an opportunity to learn about,
enjoy, and participate in one of the oldest performing
arts, opera.
Opera In The Park is an enlightening, enjoyable,
expense free, experience in Sunrise Park.
There is no admission, unless you prefer a
space under the large tent in front of the stage.
People bring lunches comprised of modest
lunches of sandwiches and fruit, to groups
that being elaborate pot luck, including wine
and fancy deserts. Whatever the menu, the
performances are superb.
This Year there were 8 artists. A couple are
new to performing from completing their
education. Others are accomplished artists
who have performed all over the world. They
What happened to the California
effort to legalize Marijuana?
Many people are now blaming the reckless
and trouble making Bernie supporters,
who overwhelmingly support marijuana
reform. They also likely to call everything
they have issue with , the establishment.
In this way people say they have become
obstructionist to their own needs. We don’t
by that, we think they are just assholes.
That burn like a candle in the wind, a new
story for each problem.
20 ballot measures planned yet none have
succeeded.
Of the 20 separate ballot measures to
legalize recreational marijuana or expand
protections for medical marijuana users
and suppliers, six already have failed to
qualify, and supporters of another four
have effectively abandoned their efforts.
Maybe because they got high or maybe
because they have yet to accept that there is
a system in place. Its not radical, its called
vetting process and voter approval.
Lynne Lyman, California director of the
Drug Policy Alliance, has held over 100
consultation meetings with local governments,
law enforcement agencies, environmental
leaders and the cannabis industry
as it drafted a version of the legalization.
It ultimately joined forces with Parker,
who for years has been one of its generous
financial supporters.
he California chapter of the National Assn.
for the Advancement of Colored People
also abandoned its legalization measure.
Alice Huffman, president of the civil rights
organization, said after getting “scooped
by the Parker initiative” she decided to join
his effort, and negotiated for changes to
address the NAACP’s top priorities: to end
the arrest of thousands of nonviolent can-
nabis users and to resentence those already
convicted of marijuana crimes that would
be reduced or rescinded under the initiative.
“I’m not advocating for the use of marijuana.
I’m advocating for social justice,”
Huffman said. “They gave us the five or six
things we asked for.”
The Adult Use of Marijuana Act would
allow Californians 21 and older to possess
and use up to an ounce of marijuana,
prohibit advertising targeting minors and
would impose a 15% tax on retail sales of
the drug. The cultivation, distribution and
sale of recreational marijuana would be
regulated by the state, and exporting marijuana
out of California would be prohibited.
Not everyone is going to get what they
want in this fight. One thing is for sure as
long as we continue to fight each other for
the perfect solution we will have the same
scattered mess we have today. No ballot
measure will mean no change.
THAT IS FUNNY
Three guys go to a ski lodge, and there aren’t enough rooms, so they have to share a bed. In the middle of
the night, the guy on the right wakes up and says, “I had this wild, vivid dream of getting a hand job!” The
guy on the left wakes up, and unbelievably, he’s had the same dream, too. Then the guy in the middle wakes
up and says, “That’s funny, I dreamed I was skiing!”
A stoner was relaxing next to a cactus with his horse standing next to him. Along came a stranger and
asked, “What time is it?” The stoner looked at the horse, lifted up his balls and said, “It’s 4:20.” The stranger
said, “You’re sure it’s 4:20?” The stoner lifted up his horse’s balls again and said, “Yup, its 4:20!” The guy
says, “How the hell can you tell time by lifting up the horse’s balls?” The stoner lifts up the horses balls
and says, “You see that clock over there?”
What do you call a stoner when horny? A weed wacker!
What do you call a person who remembers what they did at woodstock ? A Liar.
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
The traveler has returned from India and my
stomach is trying to get used to food without
curry (actually not difficult) and getting back into
the habit of work, governing and just enjoying
spring in the valley.
Ask write this, I am about to begin a meeting with
the LOSSAN (Los Angeles * San Diego * San Luis
Obispo Rail Corridor Agency) board of directors.
This is the group that operates the Amtrak rail
service from San Diego north to San Luis Obispo.
They are also being considered to be the operating
agency for the Coachella Valley rail service. I
represent Riverside County on the board and it
certainly has helped to keep our voice in the mix
for our potential service.
The current discussions are to have two trains a
day from Los Angeles to Indio (and return), leaving
the desert about 7am and 10am and returning
about 10am and 7pm. The train would run from
Indio to Palm Springs to the Banning Pass to San
Bernardino, down to Anaheim and on to Los
Angeles. Obviously our tourism industry is agog
over the possibilities of connecting LA, all things
Disney and the greater Palm Springs area. This
certainly is a good thing, but I look at it as something
else.
For decades the Inland Empire has been the recipient
of huge numbers of housing starts but very
little in the way of employment. In government
speak we call it “jobs/housing balance. Many of
our residents are forced onto the freeways early
each morning to work and then sit on those freeways
to come home, not arriving until well past
8pm.
If we can link the major job centers of San Bernardino,
Anaheim and LA by train the opportunities
for our citizens are innumerable. Lifestyle
choices expand and use of funds expand as well
as people put less money into their cars and more
into their homes and families.
There have been two public hearings in the valley
related to the environmental studies but not about
station locations, hours of service, etc. I would
very much appreciate hearing your thoughts so
I can share with Amtrak, CALTRANS and others
involved in the decision. Please email your
thoughts at gpettis@cathedralcity.gov
The other item on my mind this week is the discussion
occurring in Palm Springs about David
Ready, City Manager and the continuing fallout
to last years FBI raids, etc. It has always been my
rule not to voice an opinion on choices other city
council’s might make. I certainly don’t want the
Mayor of Rancho Mirage to comment on Cathedral
City’s business. However, I had to weigh in
on this.
David Ready is the senior city manager in the
valley and by far is one of the most respected. He
has led Palm Springs well, navigating the recession
and bringing it through to the showcase city it is
today. City Council members set policy, we point
direction, we do not run our cities on a day to day
basis, that is the City Manager’s job.
I would only recommend to my colleagues on the
Palm Springs Council to remember what occurred
via prior council votes and not attempt to fix
blame on someone who has done an exceedingly
valuable service to the community and valley.
Greg Pettis is a 22 year city councilman in Cathedral City.
He has made his name in governmental circles as an
expert in transportation issues and is very active in working
on bringing passenger rail service to the COACHELLA
Valley. Greg was the first openly gay elected city council
members In Riverside County. He has served on the
boards of the National League of Cities and the League of
California Cities and as President of the Southern CA Asso-
of Governments.
