Buderim Ginger launches new alcoholic Ginger Beer range
Thanks to the beverage gods, Aussies are about to get their very own range of pre-mixed alcoholic Ginger Beer drinks,
featuring universal favourites Ginger Beer & Vodka and Ginger Beer & Spiced Rum.
Served in chilled, slimline 250ml cans, these newly launched sweet golden concoctions of ginger beer and alcohol can now
literally be consumed in two easy steps; open and sip.
Also known as a Moscow Mule (aka history’s tastiest drink), the Ginger Beer & Vodka variant boasts the unique and
perfectly matched flavours of Buderim Ginger and clean high-quality Vodka, paying homage to this classic cocktail.
And perhaps the most refreshing beverage of all time, the Ginger Beer & Spiced Rum combination is steeped in a rich
history, dating all the way back to the late 1800’s. Traditionally known as a ‘Dark and Stormy’, this delicious mix of Buderim
Ginger and Spiced Rum delivers an extra smooth taste with a rich vanilla & spice character.
The launch of the new alcoholic range in First Choice Liquor
and Vintage Cellar stores comes off the back of the successful
launch of Buderim Ginger’s non-alcoholic range last summer,
including Original Ginger Beer, Ginger Beer & Guarana,
Reduced Sugar Ginger Beer and Ginger Beer & Pear, which
recently just won the 2016 Product of the Year Award in
the Beverage Category.
We don't mean to boast, but Ginger is kinda our thing
As fine purveyors of all things ginger since 1941, Buderim
Ginger is known for creating a distinct flavour hit like no
other. Made using only the freshest ginger, these delightful
new additions deliver a zesty bite that can quench the
most merciless of thirsts.
The new alcoholic Ginger Beer range can be consumed
straight from the can, or poured over ice with a twist of
lemon for a pleasing tipple.
Proudly made on home-soil.
IN SEASON
FACTS & TIPS?
Pick plump:
Wrinkly doesn’t mean ripe. Go for
plump, heavy passionfruit.
Bag it:
With protective skin they don’t
spoil easily but to make them last
longer, keep them in a plastic bag
in the fridge. It stops them from
dehydrating, they’ll last a month!
Get passionate about health:
Passionfruit is a good source of fibre,
a source of vitamin C and low in
energy - only 55 kilojoules per serve!
Passionfruit
At its best: Aussie Passionfruit for Autumn and Winter.
An unexpected abundance of sweet passionfruit is hitting stores
right now, giving Aussies an early treat ahead of the traditional
winter peak.
Thanks to plenty of warm and humid days earlier this year,
passionfruits are popping off the vines, resulting in a consistent
flow of excellent quality fruit.
Nick Hornery, a second-generation Australian passionfruit
grower from NSW, is pleased that the influx means Aussies can
keep enjoying passionfruit well into the cooler months.
“We’ve been busy picking around 15,000 passionfruits a day on
average. Our vines are flush with flowers, and we’re expecting a
great winter crop with a slightly tangier taste.”
Nick is one of 190 passionfruit farmers in Australia who work
seven days a week to deliver top quality fruit to store shelves
around the country. Nick enlists a team of locals to help collect
the fruit and has help from his family, including his four-year-old
son Gus, who loves tractor rides around the farm.
Although it is available all year round, passionfruit experiences a
peak in summer and winter. With over 15 years in the passionfruit
industry, Nick shares his top tips to enjoy this sweet treat during
this peak season.
Picking and storing your fruit
• Pick ripe fruit that is plump, smooth and heavy for its size –
wrinkly does not mean ripe!
• Passionfruit lasts up to one month in the fridge and two weeks
in the fruit bowl – keep them in a plastic bag to maximise
freshness. Add passionfruit to a cheese platter in place of
quince paste for a touch of sweetness.
• Add passionfruit to classic baked desserts for a fragrant
twist. Mix into tarts, pudding, slices or icing, or drizzle over
cheesecake or pavlova.
• Add passionfruit to your morning smoothie or on top of your
morning porridge for a fibre boost.
Visit Website
PAGE 8
Gettin’ juicy:
Instead of chopping them in half,
chop the top off and eat it like a
boiled egg with a spoon to avoid
losing the juice.
Flavour boost:
Make everyday meals special! Scoop
passionfruit onto cereal, enjoy with
yoghurt, add to desserts or mix it into
your banana smoothie to kick start
your day.
Delicious dressing:
Try adding passionfruit to a
traditional balsamic and olive oil
dressing for a tasty, tangy change.
Strain for seedless:
If the black edible seeds don’t
take your fancy and you’d prefer
passionfruit pulp, simply strain the
seeds out.
Irresistible icy poles:
For a refreshing summer treat, freeze
passion fruit pulp in ice trays or
popsicle moulds.
Sweet treat passion:
Make simple desserts more exotic.
Add to ice cream, spoon onto on
a sponge cake or use on a cheese
platter in place of quince paste.
Perfect pairings:
Passionfruit goes well with fish, pork,
coconut milk, vanilla, honey, banana,
mango and pastry.
Delectable drinks:
The liquid nature of passionfruit
pulp makes it perfect for adding
to beverage for a tangy twist. Try
making a passionfruit Caprioska by
mixing vodka, lime and passionfruit.
Passionate all year round:
Passionfruit is available year round
but there are two supply peaks in
summer (December – February) and
winter (June – August).

Pineapple
Another great
Aussie favourite
is the Pineapple,
not many know
it as a Winter Fruit
but it thrives in the tropical states through Winter.
Pineapples are an excellent source of vitamin C and
manganese, which is good for bone health. They are also
a good source of thiamin, magnesium and vitamin B6.
Pineapples contain fibre and bromelain, which makes them
a terrific food for gut health.
You can store chopped pineapple in an airtight container
in the fridge for up to six days and in the freezer for up to
six months.
Select fruit that feels heavy for its size and check it doesn’t
have soft spots or bruises. If it has a top, the leaves should
be fresh and green.
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN LABELS
New Labels for Consumers
In March 2016 the Federal Government announced that there will be significant reforms to Australia’s Food labelling for
all food available for retail sale in Australia. After many years of consumer complaints, lobbying by consumer groups and
Media including Buy Australian magazine the government has conceded that the current system needed overhauling and a
new Country of Origin labelling system was needed.
This is a major win for consumers, the old labelling system was confusing at best. The new Country of Origin Labelling will
show consumers where the product is made, packaged and grown at a glance, giving consumers the ability to make more
informed choices.
You can expect to see new Country of Origin labels as early as July 1 2016, business do have two years to sell existing stock
so it won’t be in full effect until mid 2018.
The Country of Origin Labelling has been created using a series of bar charts designed to be consistent, easily
recognisable, and most importantly, easy to understand. Let’s have a look and see what you can expect to see on your
supermarket shelves.
PRIORITY FOODS
All food available for retail sale with the exception of Non priority foods. (See next page for Non priority foods)
The proposed country of origin labels for priority food grown and produced in Australia will identify two key things:
1. That the food was grown, produced or made in Australia – indicated by the kangaroo logo
2. The phrase stating that the food was grown, produced or made in Australia.
Below, for products that are not 100% grown and produced in Australia the bar chart shows the percentage of Australian
ingredients in the food by ingoing weight and is stated in the phrase.
see next page for more label examples
PAGE 11

NON PRIORITY FOODS
Include Confectionary, Alcoholic beverages, Bottled Water, Soft Drinks, Biscuits and Snack foods
For non priority foods having a bar chart is optional, they still must have a clear reference to their country of Origin in plain
text so if you do not see the bar chart take a closer look for the text panel.
THE NEW LABELS WILL ALSO INCLUDE PACKAGING INFORMATION
As you can see there are a few options manufactures and producers can choose from to show Country of Origin but it is
clear and easy to understand.
IMPORTED PRODUCTS
Imported products will carry their own Country of Origin label stating their country of origin.
There is also a label for when there is a blend of Australian and imported ingredients.
There are a few more variations on the labels, you can download or read the full face sheet.
Visit Website
There is also help for Australian
business, the Government is
developing an online decision
tool to help business select the
right labels for their products.
Information for business will
be available.
beyond the sporting fan to people far and wide across the
country through the COON Cheese Toastie Truck.
The Coon Cheese Toastie Truck will travel the country,
attending a wide range of events with $1 from every $2
COON Cheese Toastie sandwich going back to support the
Swimming Australia Junior Dolphins Program.
The Junior Dolphins Program is a national initiative
encouraging children to join their local swimming club and
introduce them to the sport of swimming - a fun and exciting
activity and a valuable life skill.
Swimming Australia Chief Commercial Officer Chris Forbes
said, “This is a perfect partnership for Swimming Australia,
aligning with an iconic brand that will be supporting the
development of future stars – and helping our fans to enjoy
their events with great tasting toasted cheese sandwiches.
Following on from the announcement of the Seven Network
as our broadcast partner last year and Bio Island as the
official nutrition partner just days ago, this is another step
forward for Swimming Australia,” Forbes said.
In addition to the Coon Cheese Toastie Truck, the
Dolphins brand will appear on COON Cheese packaging in
supermarkets around Australia.
The General Manager of Marketing at COON Cheese, Ted
Lawson said “As swimming is the number one participation
sport in Australia and we believe that all Australians should
learn to swim this is the right partnership for Coon Cheese.
We believe in promoting an active, healthy lifestyle one in
which Coon Cheese and swimming can play an important
role especially in children and young adults.
The Coon Cheese Toastie Truck will be raising money for
Swimming Australia by selling Toasties, hot off the grill,
which is comfort food that all Australians grew up with.
We like to say that eating a Coon Cheese Toastie is like that
feeling you get when Mum wraps you with a towel after a
swim. “Comfort never grows old”
Food Allergy Week
Notice anything strange in late May, did you see people walking around with just one fingernail painted? Well if you did it
was all for a good cause. May 15-21 was Food Allergy Week, a fantastic initiative by Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia (A&AA)
to help raise awareness of the prevalence of food allergies, and the best way communities can work together to support
people with food allergy to minimise their risk and help manage emergencies when they happen.
Australia has one of the highest rates of food allergies in the world and the incidence is increasing at an alarming rate.
Did you know:
• One in 10 children born in Australia today will develop a life threatening food allergy.
• According to the latest Australian statistics released in 2015, hospital admissions for anaphylaxis due to food allergy
increased by over 50 per cent in the seven years between 2004 and 2012.
• The biggest increase in hospital admissions for anaphylaxis due to food allergy has been among children five to 14,
where admissions have more than doubled. This group is at greatest risk of fatal anaphylaxis.
• Anaphylactic reactions now account for 1 in every 500 hospital admissions for children aged 5-14, with rates also
increasing in older teens and young adults.
• MAKE A DONATION at www.foodallergyaware.com.au
• ADOPT AN ALLERGY for one day to better understand the challenges
allergy sufferers face every single day. Set up an Everyday Hero
fundraising page for friends and family to sponsor you
• DOWNLOAD A BADGE from our website to use through your
social media channels
• HOLD A LOCAL COMMUNITY EVENT to raise awareness and/or funds
For further information, please visit www.foodallergyaware.com.au
Nuts about Nuts
If you are nuts about nuts then you have not only been enjoying a great variety of tasty treats
but you have also been doing your body a favour as nuts are known to have many nutritional health benefits.
The increase in nut consumption in Australia and around the world has risen rapidly over the past ten years. A fact that
might surprise many is that the Australian Tree nut industry is Australian horticultures largest industry (3 times larger than
table grapes and citrus), and also Australian agriculture’s largest export industry (reaching export values of over $1 billion
in 2015). This growth has in large part been driven by rising global consumer demand, which is the result of greater focus on
health and healthy diets. (e.g. Mediterranean diet).
So what is everyone going nuts over. Nuts were once off the waist watchers’ diet for being too high in fat, but over the last
few years a leading health awareness initiative - Nuts for Life, has been changing the way we think about these wholesome
little nuggets.
The aim of the Nuts for life programme is to educate the public, health advocates, health professionals and the media
about the health benefits of a daily healthy handful of nuts. The recent Australian Healthy Survey (2011-13) found on
average Australians eat just 6 grams of nuts a day, well short of the 30 gram serving size recommended in the Australian
Dietary Guidelines.
Tree nuts include: Almond, Brazil nut, Cashew, Chestnut, Hazelnut, Macadamia, Pecan, Pine nut, Pistachio and Walnut.
(Peanuts are not included as they are actually legumes).
What does 30grams of nuts looks like? Well it’s about...
• 20 almonds
• 10 brazil nuts
Our market research has found one of the key reasons why
Australians don’t eat nuts every day is their concern about
nuts causing weight gain. However, international research
has found nuts do not cause weight gain and there are many
reasons why:
• Nuts help satisfy appetite – healthy fats, fibre and
protein in nuts help control appetite
• Less fat absorption – we don’t absorb all the fat in nuts;
some is trapped with fibre and excreted in stools
• GI lowering effect – adding nuts to meals with
carbohydrates slows digestion and slows the rise in
blood glucose, keeping you feeling satisfied for longer
• Improved insulin response – nuts make the body more
sensitive to insulin, whereas insulin resistance leads to
weight gain
Better compliance – people enjoy nuts, and we all know
people stick to a healthy eating plan for longer if it contains
foods you enjoy. Better compliance to a healthy eating plan
leads to greater weight management success.
Nuts are available all year round, except for fresh chestnuts
which are only available over Autumn and early winter.
Frozen chestnuts and other chestnut products such as
chestnut flour, are available all year round.
Once you have your nuts at home it’s best to store them in
an air tight container in the fridge or freezer. They will keep
for 6-12 months if stored well. Remember to bring then
back to room temperature before eating to bring back the
nutty flavours. We like to zap them in the microwave for 30
seconds – nothing beats the taste of warmed nuts!
Nuts in cooking
Many years ago Nuts for Life analysed the recipes in
women’s, food and health magazines to determine what
are the most common types of recipes published and what
are the most common types of recipes that use nuts as
ingredients. As a result Nuts for Life developed two tabletfriendly
recipe booklets which showcase nuts in savoury
settings, but don’t worry there’s a few fun recipes there too.
GREAT AUSTRALIAN BRANDS
Murray River Salt - Premium Gourmet Salt Flakes
SunSalt/Murray River Salt has been owned and operated by Duncan and Jan Thomson since 1983. The business began
producing salt from the unlimited supply of underground saline water at Hattah, North West Victoria.
Now with thirty years experience, SunSalt has gained significant knowledge and developed distinctive techniques to
extract value-added salts from inland brines.
In 2000, SunSalt registered Murray River Salt and began producing premium gourmet salt flakes utilising
concentrated brine from the Mourquong Salt Mitigation Basin, which is located 13 kilometers northwest of Mildura
in New South Wales.
The concentrated brine is pumped up from an ancient inland sea and makes its way to crystallizer ponds. The brine is
evaporated by the sun and crystallizes over the summer months where it is then harvested and transported to a nearby
processing plant to be washed, dried and packaged. The water from the aquifer is highly mineralized, which gives the
salt flakes their distinctive pink hue and soft flavour. This natural salt contains no additives or preservatives and is full
of trace elements such as magnesium and calcium, whereas normal table salt has all the minerals washed out of it.
Murray River Salt flakes are considered essential by foodies and top chefs across Australia and more recently
around the world.
Recent awards include a Superior Taste award from the International Taste Quality Institute in Europe and an
Innovation Award at SIAL China.
CERTIFIED ORGANIC MILK
Why you should have an-udder glass
So, feel like a
glass of milk?
Make sure you look for the
Australian Certified
Organic logo first!
Australian Organic owns
and supports Australia’s
largest organic certifying
group Australian
Certified Organic.
The Australian Certified
Organic ‘Bud’ logo appears
on over 16,000 products
across the nation.
Remember when we used to get those little milk cartons at Primary School every
day? Turns out our teachers and parents were onto something! A glass of milk
every day is just what most kids need to lead a healthy life as adults. However, a
recent study discovered that, compared to non-organic classified dairy products,
we should be choosing organic milk as it contains double the health benefits.
The study was completed by the British Journal of Nutrition in Newcastle,
England, and was the largest systematic review of its kind led by an international
team of experts.
The results are as astounding as they are pleasant. The British Journal found that
organic milk as well as organic meat contain a whopping 50% more beneficial
omega-3 fatty acids than non-organic classified dairy and meat products.
Omega-3 fatty acids are the so called ‘essential fats’ within the human body and
crucial for our systems, as they have been shown to help prevent and control
common diseases of modern society. Omega-3 fatty acids also can help in the
prevention of heart disease and stroke, lupus, eczema and rheumatoid arthritis
as well as assist to normalise and regulate cholesterol. They also may play an
important role in protecting from cancer and other conditions.
Most importantly to note is that the human body can’t produce omega-3 fats
itself - humans have to consume omega-3 fat rich foods, such as fish, nuts and
leafy vegetables to be able to benefit from their positive properties. ‘The results
from this study are amazing, but come as no surprise to us here at Australian
Organic’ comments Australian Organic CEO Paul Stadhams. ‘Certified organic
farming methods result in nutritional differences between certified organic and
non-organic crops like fruit and vegetables, so it is natural to see positive changes
in dairy as well!’
The Australian Certified Organic Standard 2013 requires certified organic cows to
have access to a healthy diet. According to the British study, natural pasture can
contain high levels of clover which has been found to increase omega 3 fatty acid
concentrations. However, it’s not just about fresh milk!
The nutritional differences also apply to certified organic dairy like butter,
cream, cheese and yoghurt - which is great, because these are products people
consume on an everyday basis. ‘This research confirms everything the Australian
Organic and our standard stand for,’ says Chief Certification Officer for Australian
Certified Organic, Mr Michael Baker. ‘The way we grow our food, what we feed
our animals and how we treat them has a massive impact on the quality of the
produce we consume. We have always gone further than just saying that synthetic
additives and conservatives are bad for your health – in our opinion it’s not just
about the things you leave out, it is about the things you add as well! It’s nice to
see this scientifically backed up.’
According to Australian Organic’s 2014 Marketing Report, the dairy product
segment has grown dramatically since 2009. This is largely due to rising organic
milk sales, driven by increased demand of consumers who have realised that the
certified organic industry is the real deal and not just a marketing hype.
Dairy is the fastest growing sector within the certified organic sector and
there is little expectation the demand in this market sector is slowing down
any time soon.
