From the Churchwardens
June has arrived as Father Richard sets off on his Sabbatical
for 3 months to begin writing his book on the next part of his
life. We all shiver in our shoes. Will any of us feature in this
edition. We will miss Father Richard but he will be returning to
Finedon periodically.
So June is going to be a very busy month as the song goes, “
“June is bursting out all over “ with Church services to
organise and social functions. The Celtic Mass, the
celebrations of her Majesty’s official 90th birthday, ( join us for
a special Celebratory Evensong on 12th June), Ad
Parnessum return with another mini opera, Mozart’s Bastien
and Bastienne, and finally the Church Fete.
Once again the Fete will on the Green in Well Street and
friends from the community have been invited to take part.
Don’t miss the terrific jazz band, dancing display, Punch and
Judy, cream teas, Philip’s raffle and lots of stalls. We may
even manage to give the maypole an airing. The Fete is
really hard work over a short period of time but the rewards
are tremendous. Help and support is required in all areas.
Most important of all we look forward to you joining us in
celebrating Holy Eucharist on Sunday mornings throughout
the month. There is a special seat waiting for you.
Yours in Christ
Jane and Neil

Stephen is the
newly elected
Police and Crime
Commissioner for
Northamptonshire.
Stephen is happily
married to Nikki.
They have a
young family and
are seeing firsthand
how
wonderful &
challenging bringing up children in
the modern world can be.
Stephen had a normal upbringing;
climbing trees, playing football and
then joining the Air Training Corps.
This taught him tolerance, how to
work with others through team-work,
the importance of taking
responsibility and the value of public
service.
Over the last 30 years, Stephen
worked his way up through the ranks,
from his first job unloading lorries
though various senior roles onto
running his own business.
Stephen is passionate about making
sure everyone gets their opportunity
to make the most of their lives. As
the Police and Crime Commissioner
for Northamptonshire, Stephen wants
to ensure victims are put at the heart
of everything he does. He is focused
on addressing the problem with
alcohol and drug fuelled crime across
Northamptonshire, as well as working
to end domestic violence. In addition
to this, he also wants to make sure
that the towns and villages of
Northamptonshire are safe for
children and free from those who
wish to harm them, either physically
or online.
10
Stephen is committed to protecting
the number of frontline officers and
believes that there is an ever
increasing opportunity to exploit new
technologies, to enable more officers
to be visible on the streets of
Northamptonshire tackling the issues
important to local residents; rather
than being stuck at stations filling out
paperwork.
In My Day
The ramblings of Hubert James
In
my day it was about this time of year
that the days got extra long and we all
wanted to make the most of the light
nights so we’d leave our curtains
open.
Course, this would cause a few
problems. You might be sitting there
clipping your toes nails or enjoying a
lump of cheese and a glass of cider
before bedtime and some passer-by
could be peering in at you. Natural
curiosity; see a window you want to
look in.
In my day, we didn’t have any of
these modern blinds. We’d never
even heard of Venice let alone the
contraptions they hung in their
windows.
And there was no way we could have
got our head around the idea of a
roller blind. You pull on the cord to
lower it, and it stays there by magic
until you give it a quick tug and it
spins back up. Really? Course, these
blinds are just like curtains; they don’t
let the light in. Although, if you are
outside and keen on shadow puppets,
they can let you watch quite a show.
So that was the problem. You wanted
to enjoy the long summer evening but
you didn’t want to be goggled while
you were doing it.
Now it so happened that there was a
spinster lady, (you don’t get them
nowadays) called Annette Shutter.
She lived on the Wellingborough
Road and loved the long evenings.
But she was shy, she didn’t want all
and sundry gawking. So she put a
mind to solving the problem.
Now Annette was a dab hand at
crochet and she hit upon the idea of
loosely crocheting curtains. She hung
them in her living room window and it
worked. They let in light but not nosey
parkers. Other folk were taken with
the idea and Annette’s curtains
started cropping up all over.
Now this all sounds very good but
sometimes the best ideas can cause
problems. Some folk strolling around
Finedon, began to feel they were
being watched. You’d be walking
along minding your own business and
out of the corner of our eye you’d see
the curtains twitch.
Folk realised that neighbours could
be, shall we say; inquisitive and they
didn’t like it. So folk blamed Annette’s
invention. It got so that if she stepped
outside her door, folk would have a
go at her.
It wasn’t pretty but she was a strong
lady. She stood up for herself and got
her own back by writing her story and
it became a best seller. I can
recommend it. Have a look in the
Library, it’s called The Drapes of
Wrath.
Sywell school praying with Bishop John
Bishop John consecrates Sywell Primary School’s
prayer garden
S
ywell Primary School has through, which was difficult as we had
had two prayer gardens – the partially sighted children. It was a bit
second one a particularly dangerous for them.”
He knew that to continue to use the
Right Reverend John Holbrook, garden they would need to do
Bishop of Brixworth
something to make it safe. At the
consecrated the second garden in school’s governors meeting they
Wellingborough.
discussed bulldozing the garden to
Revd Duncan Beet, Priest in make it part of the field because it
Charge of Sywell with Overstone would cost thousands of pounds to fix
and a Governor of the school it.
explained: “The school got a grant “We didn’t feel that it was right to
to build a hall five years ago – the spend that much money on the
original Millennium garden was garden when we could put that in the
destroyed in that process. So I curriculum.”
thought, let’s make a prayer garden The head teacher paused, “But we
just didn’t want to let the prayer
The first prayer garden was a garden go.”
lovely space, populated with plants The next day Mr Lunn got an email
donated by Beckwith Emporium from Julie Harrison, a former student
with winding paths and five prayer who worked for Amey, the
stations. The problem was it was a construction company. In her email
complicated garden with lots of odd she said that she was in a position
shaped flowerbeds and took a lot of where she can give something back
care.
to the school and asked. “Is there
Russell Lunn, head teacher of the anything that you need doing?”
school told of the safety issues. He said, “So I told her about the
“The paths were gravel, and after a 12 garden.”
while the matting started to come Julie came and had a look; and with
Tony Noble, one of the school’s
governors, developed a rough
plan for an easy to maintain, safe
and workable area that could be
used throughout the curriculum.
Sywell’s head teacher talked
about the amazing timing of the
governors meeting and the email.
“Isn’t’ that so much like God?”
Amey construction brought in
Ground Control, a landscaping
company, to finish the job. They
worked very quickly so that it
wouldn’t impact the children. It
took two weeks from levelling the
previous garden to laying the
paths, planting the boarders and
installing the prayer stations.
All of the garden features were
gifts; some from parents and
former students, and the extralarge
reading chair from Amey.
Neil Botterill, Church Warden
and a Governor of Sywell Primary
school made two of the features
himself at Crane Plastics
Ltd. The plastics company then
donated them; the cross in the
middle of the Garden and a large
plastic Bible set in one of the
flowerbeds.
Neil pointed out the loose pages of
the Bible. “At first it was a solid piece
with a turned up corner to look like a
page. One of the children thought “hey
it’s a book, you can turn pages” and
accidentally broke it. But this led to
something better; we now have
laminated pages for different seasons
that CAN turn.”
Bishop John said it best. “I had a
super morning visiting Sywell
School. The children made me feel
very welcome. They’ve taken me
around the classrooms and shown me
their fabulous new hall.
“But even more important, they’ve
shown me a shopping trolley where
they are collecting food and clothes for
refugees. They’ve told me about a
running event around the school where
they’ve raised £1,000 for the Anthony
Nolan Bone Marrow Charity.
“The heart of the School is as
delightful as the new prayer space.”
The Bishop of Peterborough writes
The Gospel of Unity
23 June was my father’s birthday. He died
in 1983, but I always remember and honour
him on his birthday (rather than on the
December day he died, which would seem
to me rather mawkish).
This year on 23 June Janice and I will be
on our summer holiday, walking the West
Highland Way in Scotland. I’m looking
forward to that. But before setting off on
that week-long walk I will have used a
postal vote to take part in the EU
Referendum.
I have already put on record three
thoughts about the referendum, and I briefly
repeat them here.
First, I regret that we are having one. We
elect a government and it is their job to
govern. I am so glad that we do not practise
direct democracy with plebiscites on
everything. We have representative
democracy where people are chosen and
set apart to make decisions and lead.
Second, since the government has
handed the decision to us, we have a clear
duty to do the research, then to think, pray,
and vote. I am encouraging the diocese to
observe a day of prayer on 16 June, one
week before the referendum. It is important
to bring this matter and our own voting
intentions to God.
Third, there is a real danger of a disunited
country and parliament after the vote, and a
real duty for all of us, but especially
politicians, to work at staying united as a
nation.
Please note that there isn’t a fourth point:
I’m not suggesting which way you should
vote, nor telling you which way I am voting.
That is not
the job of
church
leaders,
though
doubtless
some will
try. Don’t
listen to
them. Make
up your own mind.
The Christian Gospel does have
something very important to say on this
though. It does not of course deal with
whether the UK should be in some sort
of economic or political union with the
EU. It says something much more
important. It tells us of God’s great plan
to unite all people, indeed all creation, in
Christ.
Whatever the outcome of the
referendum (and I do have a very strong
view about it), much more important is
that through the debate and in the
aftermath we as Christians can be
talking about the great unity plan, God’s
plan, to bring together all people, tribes,
races, and languages, to know and love
and worship and bow before Jesus
Christ, the King of Kings and Lord of
Lords
With best wishes
