Hey everyone! What we’d like to do this year is
blow - no make that BLAST – our own horn!
Why? Just because we want too! We’re sure our
exuberance will please our returning and new
audiences! Here are some “Season 28” stats
as to why?
TO THE
2016
We’re hogging most of July because it’s taking place over
four weekends
We have over 110 bands and around 700 hours of music
programming lined up for you – it’s live, it’s raw, it’s honest
and it’s in the moment
We’ve been named one of the top ten jazz festivals in the
world – so you know you should be checking us out -
in person
We continue to be FREE, hosting close to one million
attendees - now that’s one big party!
We’re proudly and mainly Canadian with a tasty sprinkling of
some amazing talent from our neighbours to the south, from
the USA , Columbia, Cuba, Ecuador and even from
down-under - as in Australia
We have our usual impressive roster of both established and
emerging artists and some special made-for-the Festival
performances and events.
and demonstrating her exceptional artistic disposition. Her father, Leo Collado,
has been of great influence on her career as an artist. In 2005 Chantel attended
the Ontario Conservatory of Music to learn vocals and in 2006, she joined John
Robert Powers to learn technique and vocals. She placed 3rd in Solo and 3rd
Yani Borrell Orchestra
Yani Borrell began his musical career at 17 as
the lead singer of Orquesta Ideal, a popular group
from his hometown of Camaguey, Cuba. With
Orquesta, Borrell travelled throughout Cuba
performing and developing his unique
salsa-vocals and endearing stage presence.
In 2004, Borrell moved to Toronto where he has
continued to dominate and develop the Canadian
Latin music scene, co-founding one of Canada’s
most popular Latin bands in Orquesta Ideal. He
has also shared the stage with legends like Andy
Montanez, Candido Fabre and Los Van Van.
Borrell’s distinct talent of on-stage improvisation
makes his performances energetic, memorable
and captivating. His self-titled, debut album Yani
Borrell was listed as one of the best salsa albums
produced in Canada within the last ten years.
Borrell is considered the vision of modern day
salsa and continues to captivate audiences on the
festival scene.
7Sould
7Sould’s performances truly reflect the identity of
Toronto, in that each member brings a different
cultural perspective to the group, creating an
unprecedented sound and experience. The idea
for the band materialized in 2011 when
Mark Daniels (congas and percussion) partnered
with Joaquin Nuñez Hidalgo (drums and
musical director) as co-creators and co-executive
producers on an outstanding musical project in
Cuba. Accomplished musicians in their own
right, Hidalgo has been featured in multiple
productions, most notably the 2008 Mirvish
production of Dirty Dancing and Daniels has
worked extensively with a variety of esteemed
artists. Their vision of a funk, rock and pop fusion
band came together when the pair joined forces
with ten highly accomplished musicians to form
7Sould. Rounding out the band are the talents of
JT Kim (bass), Jasper Gahunia (DJ, keyboards),
Madette Mendoza (lead vocals), Dyalis Machado
(percussion, vocals), Darryl Joseph-Dennie (piano,
keyboards), Gary Lee Hill (guitar), Ara Arakelyan
(saxophone, keyboards), William Lamoureux
(violin and vocals), George Murga-Martinez
(trumpet) and Kimya Hypolite (vocals).
Rich Brown Band
During his career as a leading artist in Toronto,
Richard ‘Rich’ Brown has found success both
as a solo artist and as a band member. At 17
years of age, Brown taught himself to play the
bass by listening to artists he admired – Jacob
Pastorius, Victor Bailey and Alain Caron. He
has appeared on over forty recordings in a
broad range of styles from jazz, funk and
Latin to traditional Asian and Arabic music. In
2012 and 2014, Brown was a featured faculty
member for the International Workshop in Jazz
and Creative Music at the Banff Centre for the
Arts. Outside of the Rich Brown Band, Brown
released a highly-regarded solo bass
recording, Between Heaviness and
Here in 2014.
Johnny Rawls
Paul James
Toronto-based musician Paul James has been a successful rock
& roll, blues artist and music producer for close to five decades. A
well-recognized and awarded musician, James has won a JUNO,
The Maple Blues Lifetime Achievement Award for Blues Music in
Canada, the London Fire Hall Lifetime Achievement Award and
multiple Toronto Independent Music Awards. Considered a
trailblazer on the independent music scene in Canada, James
produced his first vinyl 45 with his own label, Lick’n’Stick in 1973,
with many indie artists having followed in his footsteps since.
James is a multi-talented artist, songwriter, vocalist and guitarist
and has performed across Canada with music greats such as
Jeff Healey and Bob Dylan.
Born and raised in Mississippi, Johnny Rawls’ interest in music first
piqued after listening to his grandfather play the blues. He began playing
music professionally while still in high school with artists such as ZZ Hill,
Little Johnny Taylor, Joe Tex and the Sweet Inspirations. Shortly
thereafter, Rawls embarked on a career as a band director, first with OV
Wright in 1970 and then with Little Johnny Taylor in 1980. In 1985, Rawls
began his solo career releasing his first record with Rainbow Records.
In 2002, Rawls launched his own recording company, Deep South Soul
under which he released a number of albums: Lucky Man, Live in
Montana and The Best of Johnny Rawls. A multi-talented artist, Rawls is
Toronto bands (Selah and Rainbow Warriors)
joining forces in 1988. Together, HDG formed a
staple sound performing in the city’s Queen Street
West neighbourhood where fittingly they derived
their namesake from a popular after-hours locale
where they remained a staple until the mid-90s.
The group is led by Desmond ‘King Selah’
Anderson on lead vocals, who at the age of 17
moved to Canada and immediately gravitated
toward gospel music, singing for many years with
his church and festival choirs. HDG’s rhythm
rendition of Oscar Peterson’s “Hymn to Freedom” as well as being
the recipient of the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award.
Taylor’s latest EP Born Free finds her returning to her roots. The
album is reminiscent of the songs and sounds she recalls of her
