All the artists in this year’s Open Studios event are
looking forward to welcoming you. We are all used to
seeing reproductions of art but there is something very
different about original artwork and talking to the artist
who produced it. If you haven’t visited an Open Studio
before, here is a summary of what you might expect:
What is the Open Studios event?
There is no charge to visit the studios – artists are more
than happy that you just come and look. They will of
course be delighted if you want to buy their work!
It is a chance to meet artists in their studios or exhibition
spaces throughout the beautiful Tamar Valley. You can
buy art direct from the artist and find out more about how
and why they produce their work. Take time with your
visits and if you want to know anything just ask the artist.
Opening dates and times – these vary so please check
the entry for each studio that you plan to visit – if in
doubt, contact the artist before you travel.
Travelling around the area – there is more information
about travelling to and around the Tamar Valley
on page 60.
1
Directions to get to each artist
Each entry in this Directory includes directions and there
will be roadside signs and arrows, with our Drawn to the
Valley logo, to lead you to each venue.
Accessibility
Please see individual artist’s details. Any queries please
contact the artist direct.
Payment
Generally by cash or cheque but credit/debit cards are
also accepted subject to availability. A deposit will
usually secure a piece of art work for you. There are
often cards and small items for sale.
Safety
If you visit a working studio there may be chemicals and
tools, so you should take particular care yourselves and
supervise children carefully.
Multiple artists at venue

Foreword
In AD997, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, raiding Vikings travelled
up the Tamar and Tavy rivers as far as Lydford, burning Ordwulf’s monastery
at Tavistock on the way.
Contemplating a river, it is usual to think of a course from source to sea: a
bubbling forth from an obscure spring, a wandering channel finally opening
into the sea. My daughter’s school project had her scrambling along rocky
escarpments from the remote Cranmere Pool on Dartmoor to a walk along
the River Dart, finally to board a boat which took her out to the Castle at
Dartmouth. Yet discovery, exploration (or conquest), is more likely to come
from the other direction, from seaward.
Thus it is seafarers, at the whim of the winds and ocean currents, who come
upon a river’s mouth whilst searching for a sheltered landfall, navigating
inland from ports to settlements and the meandering upper reaches. It is
from the history of the Tamar, as first and foremost a river of explorers, that
we begin a trajectory that takes us from Plymouth Sound, with its
connections to naval power, and draws us further into the course of the
Tamar, simultaneously flowing and fixed as a border between Devon and
Cornwall, almost to the north coast.
The artists of Drawn to the Valley are exhibiting a remarkable range of
contemporary art practices, from painting, printmaking and ceramics to
photography, textiles and jewellery in this annual Open Studios event.
What binds them together in a common approach is the practice of drawing.
This is to think about drawing in its widest sense, whether actual markmaking,
the manipulation of materials, or the traces of light recorded in a
photograph. Drawing is a process of exploration, like seafaring, where the
artist navigates a course of action between competing forces, by deciding
when to yield or to reassert control, steering the drawing into a flow that is
most conducive to the emerging artwork.
It is this idea of flow that is so favourably served by the Tamar and which has
been assimilated by these artists. It is in the same spirit of exploration that
Drawn to the Valley invites you to discover the diversity of the work shown
in Open Studios 2016 and to find out for yourselves what makes this such a
rich place for artists and makers.
Drawn to the Valley – 13 Years
Tavistock Annual Exhibition
Tavistock Town Hall
27th to 31st July 2016
It is thirteen years since the Drawn to the Valley group first got together
as a way for artists local to the River Tamar to keep in touch and exhibit their
work. Much of their inspiration comes from their passion for the Tamar Valley
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are now over 130 members
covering a host of creative skills, and a wide geographical area, and the
group’s continued success is something to celebrate.
The Drawn to the Valley annual Summer Exhibition in Tavistock Town Hall
is a fantastic opportunity to see a wide selection of these artists’ work under
one roof, and is a great way to get a flavour of more to come as this event is
followed by Open Studios from 27th August to 4th September 2016.
Paintings, prints, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, photography, glass, wood and
sculpture all form part of this eclectic exhibition. All work is for sale and will
include cards and unmounted work. The artists range from those with a great
deal of experience to those who are just starting out. Prices reflect this mix
and there will be plenty of bargains.
The private view, on Tuesday 26th July from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm, is a
wonderfully vibrant occasion which offers the opportunity to meet many of
the artists and to see their work displayed. For the artists themselves it is an
important event that brings them together both socially and professionally. It
is both exciting and daunting for them to see their work in a public show.
My inspiration comes from working on location in the Tamar Valley, moors
Printmaking, artist books, cards
The concept of fragments is central to my practice. I am interested in
capturing the intimate, momentary experiences of walking on the South West
coastal footpath and Dartmoor through printmaking and drawing. These are
often presented as artist books.
11.00 am to 4.00 pm daily.
Late night Friday 2nd September 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm
From City Centre follow signs for Mount Wise. At Cumberland Gardens,
Devonport, turn left off mini-roundabout, first right at Co-op, left fork into Ker
Street. No 69 is midway on left. Devonport Guildhall straight ahead. Free
on-road parking. Disabled access. All on ground floor, with lavatory, no steps.
I was a finalist in The Folio Society’s annual
International Illustration Competition and my work was
exhibited in The House of Illustration in London. Sadly I
didn’t win but the awards evening was great fun.
Also since the last open studios I won Plymouth
University’s Dean’s Award for Illustration with a trip to
Prague as the prize.
Textile Artist Tessa Jane won 1st Prize Best Oxford
International Air Fair Artist Award 2016 -“A unanimous
decision to reward an exceptional artist with hugely
diverse talents”, Joelle Dinnage, Global Art Agency.
When asked by Bill Heine, BBC Radio Oxford what
inspires her and her passion for art Tessa replied that
it was not enough to create beautiful things that there
should be a meaning and purpose to her work. Showing
her hand made shoes called “Walking through worlds”,
hand printed from leather left overs Tessa explained
that they represent where we tread, the path we take
and that we should go lightly through life and asks that
people care about the planet and one another.
“That chair speaks volumes and says more about the
artist, her work than any other painting here”, Richard
Knight, Ex Chair of Old Masters at Christies, serving
twice as joint Chair for Executive Committee of the
European Fine Art Foundation (TEFAF) . The event was
I am very happy to announce that my art was selected
for inclusion in 101 Abstract Artworks, a publication by
Art has no Borders. This isn’t an ordinary print
publication. Its an iArtBook, a digital publication
available from Apple’s iBooks store, that can be viewed
on either an iPad or Mac on the iBooks App. What
makes iArtBooks so unique are the interactive and
innovative features they incorporate. Discovering art
through iArtBooks is great fun, as you can zoom in on
the images and also discover more artwork via links to
My piece “Growing 1”, oil on canvas, 100 x 40cm, sits
alongside 100 other artworks from artists all over the
world. 101 Abstract Artworks has no restrictions on the
media of art submitted! So, this publication has a broad
spectrum of art; something for everyone.
year, these are usually based on four days per venue
across the seasons.
This year once again we have been kindly asked back
to two venues that have inspired many artists over the
last few years; The Garden House at Buckland
Monochorum, Devon and Pentillie Castle near
Hatt, Cornwall.
These two stunning locations have supported Drawn
to the Valley while allowing our artists to soak up
their breath-taking views, each location providing an
abundance of inspiration and variation, from beautiful
flowering meadows to weathered outbuildings and the
all-important river Tamar.
Their support enables our artists the precious time to
sketch, paint, photograph and be generally inspired by
the fabulous landscape, as well as providing the
opportunity for our members to meet up and share
the experience.
As artists, we spend many hours working in solitude; the
community of Drawn to the Valley is such an important
part of our membership, enabling peers to share their
work, artistic experiences as well as the shared
inspiration from beautiful
surroundings
during the much
appreciated
drawing days.
