JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore
I recently got some help with various issues.
We all have issues. We all need help. There
is absolutely nothing wrong with asking
for help. Like the woman who can’t go to a
friend’s wedding, or a class reunion because
she gained weight? Screw that; don’t stop living
life because of that. I got myself a big ole
pregnant belly. Is it my medication, or the fact
I’m eating more and not healthy? Regardless,
I’ll figure out how to live a healthier lifestyle,
but I’m not wasting away in my house so I
won’t be seen. People will whisper loudly, “Oh
my Jersey gained weight”, well my response
is, “Who fucking cares”. All the kicks, charity
work, and entertaining mean nothing because
of man boobs? You just need to disappear to
the land of make believe.
I am not the only FAT person in this world,
but recently some ignorant douche-bag had
to go on social media and call someone they
were jealous of FAT. WOW!!! What an original
quip. How creative. Yes, he is FAT, but
also lost 100 lbs. recently. I’m FAT. Heck, the
4 people across from me at Starfucks are fat.
Oh no, it’s the end of humanity as we speak!
My point, firstly, If you have to write crap
on social media to tear someone apart, then
those are your demons. I’m sorry your life
sucks, but you made it that way. Call ME
anything you want. Can we use a Thesaurus
or try to be more creative than you think you
are on stage? I know who I am and I know
I am great person who doesn’t’ bash people
on social media. Especially, the preschool
adjective word, FAT. The reason the word fat
was used was because of creative, attractive,
caring, kind, lovable, may be too much of the
truth for my wonderful friend, but all you
have is FAT? Plus, you being the “trash” you
are, insulting the fat girl needs to call Jenny
Craig herself. This isn’t a thin person calling
the kettle or pot fat.
She could afford to: A. Lose weight before
calling someone fat or B. Get a better insult
book. (Or my favor) C. Shut your fucking
mouth; no one cares what you have to say.
How’s that for stupidity.
THE ART OF PATRIOTIC DESIGNS
There are many symbols and designs
that represent the United States. Some
are organic, such as the bald eagle, the
buffalo, and the wild turkey. Others
such as the flag of the United States
with the stars and stripes and the seal of
the president of the United States were
designed. These designs were not usually
created by a professional designer,
instead by a person not necessarily with
an art or design background.
The first flag using the 5 pointed star
and stripes is credited to Betsy Ross
who owned an upholstery shop in
Philadelphia. The legend is that George
Washington approached her with the
challenge to sew and help design the
flag. Washington and others whom
he had consulted with, suggested the 6
pointed star, however, Ross suggested
the 5 pointed star which she could cut
out much easier and with more consistency.
If you have ever attempted to
cut out stars on a piece of paper you
will understand her reasoning. The
stars represented the 13 states that were
formed at that time, and were arranged
in a circular arrangement. The current
design and arrangement was designed
by Robert Heft in 1958 as part of a high
school project supported by the government
to design a new look for the flag.
His design was given a B- by the teacher
supervising the project with the indication
that the grade would be reviewed if
his design was accepted. Goes to show
how much school grades are not necessarily
representative of success. The
only changes in this design were made
when the states of Hawaii and Alaska
were added to the union.
Another symbol of the U.S. seen frequently
in the media is the seal of the
president.
Rutherford B. Hayes was the first president
credited with requesting that an
official seal be designed. Harry Truman
requested the changes to the original
seal which is still in use today. the use of
the bald eagle is prominent in the seal,
surrounded by a circle of stars representing
each state of the union.
A little design trivia at this 4th of July
week where the flag will be seen often.
Hope you had a safe 4th of July.
California End of Life Option Act:
You deserve a choice
Ÿ Have you been with a loved one through their dying process?
Ÿ Have you thought about what measures you would like if you were
terminally ill, and how long you might want them to be used?
Ÿ Do you know your options and your rights?
For 23 years, California tried to pass Medical Aid in Dying legislation, to give people the
entire range of choice at the end of life. This is about informed choice and selfdetermination.
The law finally passed and went into effect June 9. California now joins
four other states with similar legislation. Desert Stonewall Democrats endorsed this
legislation early on in the process.
The End of Life Option Act allows terminally ill people in the last six months of their lives
to request life ending medications from their doctor in order to end their suffering and
not prolong the dying process. There are certain qualifications and restrictions for this to
happen. Who qualifies? Who does not? What is the process?
Our speaker is Paul Zak. Paul is an LGBT advocate, a social worker and educator. He is
now retired and does volunteer work for Desert Stonewall Democrats and the Five
Hearts Healing Arts Foundation. He has recently been trained by Compassion and
Choices to offer workshops and give presentations on the End of Life Option Act.
Reasonable accommodations will be provided for people with disabilities. Please
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
So much going on nationally, where to begin….
It get’s sort of silly to talk about Donald Trump
and where he is a buffoon or a megalomaniac.
Probably both. In the short space of a week he
announces his support for the United Kingdom
leaving the European Union, then when
it happens, he doesn’t think the economic fall
out after the vote as “anything important”. To
me a loss of $3 TRILLION in the stock market
is pretty important. He verbally lambastes a
reporter from Turkey when he was trying to
ask a question about the terror attacks in Istanbul.
He actually asked him, “Are you friend
or foe”! Then he announces his top two picks
for Vice President are Chris Christie, Governor
of New Jersey, who is universally hated
in his state and former House Speaker Newt
Gingrich, who shut down the government, not
once, but twice when he was speaker and led
WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS
ARIES: March 20 - April 18:
Emotions aren’t things to be
ignored. A tiff could turn into
something much more complicated
if left unaddressed.
TAURUS: April 19 - May 19: You
may find yourself in deep, but
you’re not a person that crumbles.
Endure it as best you can.
GEMINI: May 20 - June 19: Did
you get all your documents in
order? loose ends could still exists
and cause delays.
CANCER: June 20 - July 21: Try
not to be so sensitive Things that
lie beneath the surface may very
well pays off in a good way. Avoid
looking to deep into good luck.
LEO: July 22 - Aug. 21: He is here.
The sooner you look, the faster
you’ll end that single streak.
VIRGO: Aug. 22 - Sept. 21: This is
your time to play in the deep end
of the pool. Still watters run deep
and your thoughts need time to
be sorted. Dont hurry complicated
issues.
LIBRA: Sept. 22 - Oct. 21: This
is not your week for relationship
building. Dont try too hard or
the one you want might run.
SCORPIO: Oct. 22 - Nov. 20:
You kuck may change this week
if your eyes are wide open. Take
time to study all things that come
your way. The one that seems too
good might be the best option.
SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 21 - Dec.
20: Don’t let people step on your
plans this week. You have a trip
that will include an unexpected
bonus.
the House in impeaching Bill Clinton for his
dalliance with Monica Lewinsky. Maybe he
likes Gingrich because they do have one thing
in common. Actually, three. Three wives who
they cheated on with the woman they married
next. Simply amazing. If it wasn’t so sad I
would be laughing.
The House special committee on Benghazi
wrapped up their “work” on the attack that
resulted in the murder of a US Ambassador
and others. After millions of dollars in taxpayer
cost they concluded that – ooops – it wasn’t
Hillary’s fault. I for one wish they had spent
that money on something tangible, like fixing
the Salton Sea or helping us get passenger rail
service in the valley.
I spent the week in Salt Lake City and Kansas
City, attending two conferences for our local
CAPRICORN: Dec. 21 - Jan. 18:
Some one is following you so
watch and follow back. There is a
problem your not adressing and
its causing back strain.
AQUARIUS: Jan. 19 - Feb. 17:
Keep a problem to yourself if its
tyhe other person, if its impacting
you let it out. You are the big
truck to help eveyone elase but
few can help you, comserve some
energy for you.
PISCES: Feb. 18 - March 19: Wow
last week was a tailspin right?
But you hung in there and got it
all done. Try to remeber this the
next time it all seems hopeless
because now you know Scarlet,
tomorrow in another day!
governments. The first was the National
Association of Regional Councils annual
meeting, where we focused on a variety
of regional planning topics; transportation,
homelessness, water and more. Over 200
elected officials from around the country representing
metropolitan areas were in attendance.
There were three of us from Southern
CA. From there I went to a leadership conference
for the National League of Cities. I serve
as Vice Chair of the Human Development
committee, where we set policy and federal
lobbying priorities in the areas of housing,
health, veterans issues and education for the
National League of Cities. During the course
of our deliberations there was a spirited discussion
on the North Carolina legislature
over-ruling Charlotte and requiring transgendered
people to use the restroom for the
gender on their birth certificate, regardless of
their legal gender or how they identify now.
Hats off to African American councilman,
Zack Reed from Cleveland, Ohio who stood
up for our community and gave a stirring and
eloquent speech on equality and equity. Be
sure to thank our straight allies for their work
supporting us.
Locally, Cathedral City continues to work on
two significant issues that will be heading to
the November ballot. First our proposed City
Charter. The Charter will make changes in
how we govern ourselves. The current draft
calls for changing the directly elected Mayor
to a rotating Mayor from among each council
members, as do most of the valley cities. It
also eliminates the elected City Clerk position
in favor of a staff position. This will
save $25,000 +/- annually in salary costs to
the General Fund. The Charter will also
require developers that get assistance from
the City to negotiate with the Building Trades
what is called a Project Labor Agreement. A
PLA sets labor standards and pay and sets
time-lines for construction and a guarantee
of no labor slowdowns or strikes. There
are some other items but these are the key
points. There will be a public hearing on the
proposed charter at City Hall on July 20th at
4:30pm for any public comment. The second
item that may appear on the ballot is tax on
marijuana cultivation and manufacturing.
Cathedral City already has a transaction &
use tax (sales) on dispensaries, but this would
expand to growing and processing. Still to
be determined is the maximum amount of
tax that will be authorized by the voters. The
council could charge a lower amount but not
go over what the voters approved.
These measures will join 15-18 statewide
propositions as well as measures from College
of the Desert and the Palm Springs Unified
School District. It will be a long ballot.
Now may be the time to sign up for vote by
mail!
Over the next few weeks and months I will
write about the propositions and how they
might affect us here in the valley. Any comments
or questions, I can be reached at greg@
gregpettis.com.
