WESTERN SPRINGS
Incorporated in 1886, the Village of Western Springs is a quaint and stable community of
roughly 13,000, located 16 miles west of Chicago.
In November, 2007, Business Week magazine ranked the quiet village second in a list of the
50 best places in America to raise children. The rankings were based on combining average
school test scores, cost of living, recreational and cultural activities, number of schools and
the risk of crime. The village is also home to award winning police and fire departments which
translated to Safewise naming it as one of the 50 safest communities in Illinois.
Still sensitive to historic scale and character, downtown Western Springs remains an active
center for community life, serving as a charming and vibrant destination to meet shopping and
dining needs — all in a family-friendly environment. New restaurants and shops not only meet
the daily needs of residents but draw visitors from around Chicago.
Part of the village charm is derived from the quality and diversity of its homes. Distinctive
single family housing, superior schools, and commuter access to Chicago via rail help contribute
to its stable, family-friendly community feel. Two elementary and one high school districts
provide quality public education.
A number of historic civic establishments help define
Western Springs. The Village Club provides regular social
gatherings and sports events. Since the ‘20s, the historic
Theatre of Western Springs still brings people of all ages
together to learn and enjoy the art of live theatre. It remains
internationally recognized for its artistic excellence. Not to
be left out is the Thomas Ford Memorial Library, generations
old but still very relevant to residents of any age.
The Grand Avenue Community Center is the oldest stone
public building still standing in Western Springs. It is now
home to the senior center, day care center and many
recreational activities. Finally, there is the celebrated
Western Springs Historical Society. This all-volunteer
organization is dedicated to preserving and sharing the village’s rich history with past, present,
and future residents. The Society operates a free museum in the village’s historic water tower.
