Welcome to the September issue of Golden Times.
Gracing the cover this month I'm proud to say
is a submission from regular "Scenic Sussex"
contributor Ashley Hemsley. A stunning shot of the lighthouse
at Beachy Head from a very talented photographer.
As regular readers will know, Golden Times is always packed
with local information, but this time we've tried to include
even more! Due to production difficulties we've been unable
to produce the Family Buzz this September, so Golden Times
has taken on board some family friendly content for this issue.
We hope there will be something for everyone in this issue,
whether you're an active grandparent or not. All of our usual
mix of opinion and information is here, thanks to all of our
suppliers and advertisers.
Enjoy the magazine and look out for the next one in November!
The 45th annual Rye Arts Festival between 17th
September and 1st October promises to be not
just the biggest but the best ever with 60 events!
Rye will have something to offer everyone -
music (contemporary and classical), book talks,
theatre, film, art exhibitions and children’s
events.
Take classical music. The fantastic young
professional singers and musicians of Euphonia
Opera return to Rye with two different operas -
The Turn of the Screw and also Don Pasquale.
Other highlights include La Serenissima who play
18th Century Italian baroque. Contemporary
music brings us 9Bach, a hauntingly beautiful
Welsh folk group, and also Rory McLeod and the
Familiar Strangers.
Joan Bakewell has lots to reflect on having lived a
full life! Loyd Grossman gives an insight into the
great 18th century historical painter Benjamin
West. Theatre is represented by "For All Time",
which is set one night when William Shakespeare
and John Fletcher (born in Rye) have until dawn
to complete their collaboration on the play "The
Noble Kinsmen"!
LOCAL AUTHOR NOMINATED FOR LITERARY AWARD
Local author, Dorit Oliver-Wolff, has been nominated for the
prestigious People’s Book Prize, an award that recognises the
talent of new and undiscovered authors from across the UK. At
the time of going to press the voting was about to close, let's
hope we can report on her victory in the next issue!
Dorit is delighted to be nominated for the prize: “I am absolutely
amazed and over the moon. It’s already a big honour being
nominated, but to win would be a dream come true. The book
should be read because people can learn from it and improve the
future for all of us.”
Dorit’s moving memoir, From Yellow Star
to Pop Star, follows her from the age of
four, performing for the former king of
Yugoslavia, through the traumas of the
Holocaust, which left her bald and weighing
just three stone aged nine. After a series
of horrific events, Dorit was spotted by a
talent scout – and the rest is history.
Dorit has dedicated her life to educating
people about the consequences of the
Holocaust. Although her experiences were
horrific, Dorit’s overriding message is a
positive one. She teaches her audiences that in order to have a
better future, we must show respect to each other regardless of
creed, colour, or religion.
When asked why she decided to write her memoir, Dorit said
“I wanted my son and daughter to know about my life before they
were born. I wanted to depict how the Holocaust never stops and
what one is forced to do just to survive another day. The title says it
all, I wanted to tell my story; how I came from dire circumstances
to become a singing sensation. Stories get forgotten if they are not
told, and I wanted to do everything in my power to keep my story
alive.”
In addition to her writing, Dorit also gives talks to local groups
and schools. These are hugely popular, as the following
The author and her book
testimonial from the treasurer of the Eastbourne Medical
Society shows:
On the 17th of May we were entertained by Dorit Oliver-Wolff with a
talk entitled “From Yellow Star to Pop Star”
I think it would be fair to say that her audience was riveted from the
first sentence. The photos of her life were moving in the extreme, her
description of her horrors that she lived through, and her amazing
coping strategy of song, was memorable and very uplifting.
I feel that Dorit should be encouraged to speak to every child of school
age, and every politician in the world. We need
enthusiastic, honest, articulate speakers to
help ensure that the world is freed from such
terrors for evermore, (although, sadly it seems
prevalent in many countries again, when will
mankind ever learn?)
I would thoroughly recommend Dorit as a
speaker to all age groups, I think her clear
presentation would make children aware of
the situation, even if most of them cannot
comprehend a world where occasional potato
peelings are a dietary treat! Please keep up the
good work Dorit.
You can buy Dorit’s memoir from all good online retailers and
local bookshops, and if you’d like to hear her talk, you can
catch her on the following dates:
12th September: Wayfinder Woman, Crown & Anchor,
Eastbourne, 7-9pm
28th September: The Good Life Exhibition, Winter Garden,
Eastbourne, supported by The Senior Forum and Age Concern,
10am-5pm
31st October: Congress Theatre, Astrid Circle, 7.30pm-9pm
If you would like to book Dorit for a pubic speaking
engagement, please contact 01323726613 or 07717246295
Friendship - by Julia Meanwell
Remember that the most valuable antiques are dear old
friends. H Jackson brown Jnr.
Good friends may help your life last longer
according to an Australian study. Conducted by the
Centre for Ageing Studies at Flinders University,
the study followed nearly 1,500 older people for
10 years. It found that those who had a large
network of friends outlived those with the fewest
friends by 22%. The companionship provided
by friends may ward off depression, boost selfesteem,
and provide support. Interestingly they
found that close relationships with children and
relatives had almost no effect on longevity.
The word ‘friend’ as defined in the dictionary is
‘a person with whom one has a bond of mutual
affection, somebody who trusts and is fond
of another, an ally or somebody who is not an
enemy’. Unless you are reclusive you are likely
to make many friends throughout your life but
would you easily recognise a ‘frenemy’ that does
more harm than good especially if you have been
friends for countless years
Do you find yourself involved in your friend’s
constant dramas with them urging you to help
them fix their problems a lot of the time? Toxic
friendships are not good for our mental health and
wellbeing; they can also be emotionally draining.
How would you describe your friends? Are they
supportive and caring; is it a good quality
Local counsellor Julia Meanwell,
has been in practice for over
20 years, she has a wealth
of experience, empathy and
understanding to offer clients.
Julia began her counselling
career as a relationship
counsellor with Relate which
incorporated working in
television and radio.
relationship with a balance of give and take?
Can you trust and rely upon their support
during times of trouble? Or, conversely, are they
manipulative, unreliable and demanding? If it’s
the latter and the relationship is unlikely to get
better then ending the friendship is really the only
option. Consider it an act of self-preservation by
protecting yourself from the harmful impact of
their negative behaviour.
Maintaining and developing friendships takes
quite a bit of effort but quality can be so much
more valuable than quantity. Surround yourself
with genuinely supportive friends that enhance
your life and well-being and the long-term
investment will pay dividends!
Concerned about your home
being sold to fund your
future care fees?
The Issue
You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple
and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it
wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own
it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it
together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it
solely and absolutely.
It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a whole property to
be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and
puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.
The Reality Today
The care Act 2014 introduced in April 2015 allows local authorities
to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own
care under the new charges and assessment of resources regulations.
Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own
and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently
averaging around £1,000 per week.
Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your
property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be
expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets
were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold.
You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets
were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be
paid for after any relevant income was taken into account.
The Solution
For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property
well in advance of any care considerations i.e. from joint tenants
to tenants in common and by setting up two property Trusts either
immediately or within a properly structured Will at the same time
in most cases, protect the integrity of your home should you ever
require care in the future, so long as avoiding care fees was not a
primary motivating reason behind the implementation of the
strategy - i.e. you should be looking to protect your half of your
property should your spouse remarry after your death, or you
should be looking to ensure that your children would not lose
50% of their inheritance should they be made bankrupt or divorce
or for example you should be looking to prevent a generational
inheritance tax burden in the future. These are all sound reasons
for implementing this strategy which in themselves are not
deliberate deprivation of assets, but the implementation of which
protects the integrity of the property.
For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and
convey your property into it which will produce the same result
and again this must be well in advance of any care considerations
and the motivation must not solely be for the purpose of preventing
your home being used to fund your care.
The Reasoning
When you own your home as tenants in common you actually
own half each. With our Post Death Property Protection Package
when the first partner dies, they leave their half into their Trust. The
surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the Primary
Beneficiary which means that as they own half and are Trustee
of the other half they have complete control over the property
and what happens to it. The children and/or whoever else is also
nominated as ultimate Trust Beneficiaries will have access to that
half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half
of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries
and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy and because
it is not possible to sell just the survivor’s half of the property, the
integrity of the property is protected. While the ‘’market value” of
half a property is negligible, The Care Act 2014 guidelines do allow
for this half to have a charge placed on it under a deferred payment
arrangement for care fees which is why this package includes a
Lasting Power of Attorney grant for Property and Financial affairs
which will enable a pre-appointed Attorney to act on behalf of the
survivor should they be unable to themselves and negotiate with the
Local Authority for the property to be rented out and a percentage
of the income given to the Local Authority instead of a charge being
placed. The second half of the property would then ultimately go
into the Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the
surviving partner eventually dies.
With our Whole of Life and Post Death Complete Property
and Family Protection Package both halves of the property are
conveyed into Trust IMMEDIATELY. This means the whole
property is protected straight away and not just after the first
party dies. The benefits of this package are that it then protects
the property even if both parties go into care before the death of
either. It also means that if the survivor goes into care the property
does not have to be rented out but if it is, 100% of the income goes
directly into the Trusts for the benefit of the survivor or any of the
other Trust Beneficiaries and does not have to be given to the Local
Authority. The most important benefit of this package though is
the property can be sold at any time and the resulting proceeds
be fully protected for the whole family within the Trusts and no
negotiation with the Local Authority is required.
Sole owners and couples who have immediately conveyed their
properties into Trust well in advance of any care consideration
and not solely for the purpose of preventing their home being used
to fund their care (deliberate deprivation of assets) secures the
integrity of the property (so long as entry into care is not within 6
months of setting up the strategy) as the property is not absolutely
owned by an individual anymore and it is not legal to force a
Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of
the Trust Beneficiaries.
Call us now for a friendly chat about which package would be of
best benefit to you and your family.
Trustees needed
Registered Charity 1159551
Local charity, Association of Carers, are looking for trustees with a range of skills and experience.
The Hastings based charity supports unpaid Carers in East Sussex to continue in their caring role by providing
free, high quality, volunteer-led services that encourage independence and reduce isolation.
The Association is looking for people who already have experience of being a trustee, have experience of chairing
a group and also a good understanding of what it is like to care for someone.
Meetings take place at the Association of Carers offices in Hastings on Thursday afternoons once monthly.
Travel expenses are reimbursed.
Chairperson and Carer, Jennifer Allen said: “People often become trustees to ‘give something back’, but there is
a two-way benefit; charities benefit from the range of skills and experience that their trustees bring, but trustees
can learn and develop new skills that may open up new opportunities for them, as well as meeting people who
share their passion.”
If you’re looking for the chance to ‘give something back’, the opportunity to learn and develop new skills, as well
as meet people who share your passion, please contact us.
SCENIC SUSSEX
Once again we've had a great response from our
readers, sorry I've not been able to include all of the
pictures you've sent in.
Top left we have a very atmospheric sunset shot from
Ian Welfare capturing crepuscular rays at Fairlight.
Next is a shot of some vintage aircraft taken by Lorna
Extence on a walk between Bexhill and Northeye.
I'm sure you'll all recognise the distinctive outline of
Pevensey Castle bathed in sunshine captured by
Roger Blackwell.
In contrast, Susan Barrell captured some very moody
skies over Cooden beach at the bottom of the page.
Below on the right is a shot of a heavy horse at work in
Hastings Country Park, captured by Terry Blackman.
Finally, in the background is a shot of the waves
lapping at Eastbourne seafront, taken by myself during
the delivery run for the July issue of Golden Times.
If you're a keen photographer and would be interested
in seeing some of your work featured in Golden Times,
you can email your images to me at :
Tricia's column - Back to School
A
s mentioned in the introduction of this
issue, our sister publication The Family
Buzz has fallen foul of some production
problems this summer. As a result, they'll
be skipping the September issue, so we've decided
to include some more family/grandparent friendly
content here in Golden Times. As a result I've been
asked to "introduce" this section of the magazine
which focuses on family activities.
Those of you who provide a little (or a lot!) of
childcare will be able to get lots of inspiration from
the next few pages. From childcare options to after
school clubs to ideas for great days out,it's all here!
Even if you're not spending time with youngsters,
the places to visit featured here offer a fantastic
day out whatever your age.
"Back to school next week" has been met with a
wide variety of responses from my grandchildren
recently. Everything from "I'm so excited!" to "Don't
ruin my holiday by talking about school!" to "It's
called university grandma.". The age and mood
of the grandchild in question has a great bearing
on how enthusiastic they are about the end of
the summer. September is definitely an exciting
and challenging time of year for youngsters of all
ages, whether they're entering their first year of
big school or their last year of university.
As the summer holidays come to a close, I'm never
sure whether to be relieved
that I'll be getting more
peace or sad that I won't be
seeing so much of the little
ones. Whichever it is, I need
to make my mind up and get
on with it, because before you
know it, October half term
will be upon us and they will
be tearing about the house
again. In no time at all, I'll be doing my best to see
that pumpkins are carved without anyone losing
an eye and they'll be asking me to make terrifying
costumes so they can roam the streets frightening
sweets out of unsuspecting neighbours.
I must confess that just the thought of Halloween
has made my mind up that I shall be relieved
once the lot of them are safely in someone else's
care being educated. Time to enjoy some Indian
Summer afternoons and have a glass of wine in
the garden I think...
If you do find yourself with some little ones in tow
for the Halloween half term and not sure what to
do with them, make sure to visit www.familybuzz.
co.uk or look up "Family Buzz" on Facebook.
Despite taking a break, the Family Buzz team will
be offering event listings and other bits and bobs
online. See you in November!
The Crunden
family from
Lewes have
thanked
Chestnut Tree
children’s
hospice for
their continued
support.
Theo Crunden is three years old.
He was starved of oxygen at birth
and suffered a brain injury as a
result. He now has quadriplegic
cerebral palsy, uncontrolled
epilepsy, secondary dystonia, and is
registered as blind.
Theo’s mum, Lucy, has spoken
about the daily challenges Theo and
his family face.
“Theo is up several times a night;
he can’t turn himself and gets
uncomfortable, so we need to help
him.” Lucy explains, “We are up
early as it takes around three hours
to get Theo ready. He is on nine
different types of medication at the
moment, and the day starts with his
first dose, which has to be given to
him slowly through his feeding tube,
followed by his breakfast. Then we
Family thanks local children’s hospice for their support
dress Theo, which is a challenge as
he is floppy but spasms frequently
If Theo is not at nursery, we
normally start the morning with
a physiotherapy or speech and
language programme, followed with
some sort of appointment. Then we
repeat the process of medication
and lunch, a small sleep in the
afternoon, more medication, dinner,
and eventually helping him get off
to sleep.
We first heard about Chestnut
Tree through our paediatrician,
we were struggling at home, we
weren’t sleeping and things were
just getting too much. When they
first recommended a hospice I was
shocked but my mind was soon put
to rest when one of the Chestnut
nurses, Laura, explained how they
could help, and my perception was
completely altered.
The first time we visited Chestnut
Tree House we thought it was
absolutely incredible, the facilities
are phenomenal. We find it really
hard to find somewhere for Theo
to enjoy, he needs stimulation
and Chestnut provides that. What
makes it even better is that we can
do this as a family - Theo’s little
sister Mabel can also join in and
enjoy playing with her brother. The
members of staff are also amazing
As well as being able to have
weekend stays and use the day care
facilities at Chestnut Tree House,
we also plan to start using Chestnut
Tree’s community team so that we
can receive care at home.
I would like to say a huge thank you
to Chestnut Tree. We are so lucky
to be able to go there, they are
absolutely incredible.”
To find out more about Chestnut
Tree and the care that they provide
in East Sussex, please visit their
website www.chestnut-tree-house.
Local family feature in charity film
Chestnut Tree children’s hospice
has recently launched a film
featuring a family from Barcombe.
The film aims to raise awareness
of the charity in East Sussex, and
the care that they can provide in
children’s own homes.
The Lundin family have been cared
for by the Sussex-based charity
since 2011 when they were seeking
respite care for their youngest
child.
Dad Jason explains “Eva was born
13 weeks early, not breathing, and
spent the first 108 days of her life
in hospital. She was tiny but she
fought hard, she is now almost six
years old and is a loving girl with
Cerebral Palsy and chronic lung
disease. She has
come a long way
since those early
days, but she
is still highly
dependent
on me and
her mum for
all of her needs.
She cannot walk unaided, her
weak chest means she is often
dependent on oxygen, she is fed by
a tube and she cannot speak to us.
Of course, she communicates in
her own way, and has even learnt a
few signs, but caring for her is still
hugely demanding.”
The family access a range of
services at Chestnut Tree. A nurse
visits regularly to take care of
Eva whilst Jason and Mel spend
some quality time together, and
with Eva’s brother George. “It’s
wonderful” Jason says, “to start
with, the visits from the Chestnut
Tree Nurse gave us time to get
everyday tasks done, but now we
use it as precious time for Mel and
I to spend as a couple, which is
really invaluable. And during the
school holidays we try to use our
visits to spend some time with
George, doing the kinds of things
that aren’t easy with Eva.”
Chestnut Tree cares for 300
children and their families across
Sussex and never charges for its
care. It costs well over £3.5 million
every year to offer these services
and less than 7% of its funding
comes from central government,
meaning it relies heavily on the
generosity of the local community.
“We are so proud of Eva and
George and will treasure this film
forever. Please, please tell as many
people as you can about it - like,
share, tweet, retweet, comment –
and help Chestnut Tree reach more
children and families like us that
need them. Thank you so much!”
ELEGANCE by Michele Duke
Elegance is a word we
rarely hear these days.
It sounds rather dated
but I believe it is more
relevant now than ever.
With so many lifestyle
choices, we can be
forgiven for chopping
and changing to try
to keep up with the world. Rushing
around, skipping meals, multi-tasking
like crazy – who has time for refinement,
graciousness, elegance? I get it – really
I do. But here’s the good bit. Once you
decide to bring elegance into your life
you’ll find it easier to negotiate through
the challenges of modern life.
Here are my top 10 tips to make you
look – and feel – more elegant.
1. Plan your day. Before you go to sleep
at night make your schedule for the
next day. And decide what to wear that
will take you from one appointment to
another. Make a note of any extras to
take – a different pair of shoes, top-up
makeup, a scarf or jacket to smarten up
for the evening.
2. Start your day with mental poise.
Take a few minutes to get your brain
and body composed before opening the
bedroom door.
3. Allow yourself time to get from
one place to another – there’s nothing
elegant about arriving flustered and
dishevelled. Put travel time into your
diary and don’t (like me!) assume you
are superhuman and can be teleported
from one place to another.
4. Dress everyday as if you will meet
the person of your dreams. That doesn’t
mean you need to dress up – just ensure
you’ll never feel embarrassed when that
tall, dark stranger smiles at you.
5. Choose quality over quantity. Food,
wine, clothes, travel – whatever you love,
enjoy the best you can afford.
6. Be kind – to yourself and others. An
ex-boss told me that a good leader was
one who spent their time finding reasons
to praise others. It’s a good outlook on
life generally.
7. Be polite. Learn from the Italians –
they say “good morning” every time they
enter a shop – Ok maybe not in Tesco
but you get the idea. ALWAYS remember
your “please” and “thank-you”.
8. Be discrete – nobody needs to know
everything about you. A few secrets, a
little wink, a suggestion of hidden depth
is très elegante.
9. Watch the news. Read quality
newspapers but don’t be snobbish
about cultural trends. Celebrity gossip
might not be your thing but sometimes
knowing the latest breaking story is what
you need to open up a conversation with
the coolest person at the party.
10. Smile – you’ll look like you’re in
control even if your life is all over the
place. A warm, genuine smile will open
doors, encourage others to offer help,
give people confidence that you know
what you’re doing. We all suffer ups and
downs but the person who always has
a ready smile is the one we want to be
with.
And that’s it. Easy eh? No, of course it’s
not easy. But each tip is a behaviour we
can try to adopt little by little, day by
day until one day it becomes a habit.
And there’s only ten so I reckon it can
easily be achieved in a lifetime or two!!
Gardening tips for early-mid Autumn
by Phoenix Gardening
We’re just getting into autumn and let’s think about spring.
What to do? We can plant spring flowering bulbs now and
also sow hardy annuals, to overwinter if you’re in one of
the milder areas, if not provide some winter protection. Lift
onions to store and also lift and store main crop potatoes.
It’s also time to clean off any summer shading washes in
the greenhouse to maximise light as the days get shorter. If
you have a greenhouse heater check that it’s working. You
can also plant some hyacinth bulbs under glass for early
flowering. It’s also a good time to plant lilies for summer
too.
Moving into Mid – Autumn time to pay some attention
to the lawn giving it some autumnal lawn care treatment.
Prune back blackcurrant, gooseberry and summer fruiting
raspberries. If you have heavy soils it’s a good time to start
winter digging before it gets too wet and let the frosts help
break up the soil. You can always lay some well - rotted
horse manure on the top to break down over winter too,
acting both as a feed and a mulch. If you like herbs you
can always pot some up and keep them on a windowsill for
winter use. It’s also a good time to plant herbaceous plants
and divide up any over large ones you may have.
“ Be safe with a stairlift;
the perfect solution to your
problems with the stairs.”
LIVING THE
ALEXANDER
WAY OF LIFE
by Liz Jeffries
Get your motor running... Head out on the highway.
This little ditty was particularly
relevant to me recently, as I
was invited to attend a Speed
Awareness Course. For those of
you not in the know, you receive
such an invitation if you have
been driving above the speed
limit and get caught on camera!
No, I was not doing a ‘Princess
Anne’, i.e., going at 93 mph in
a 70 mph zone. I was, in fact,
doing a rather sedate 68 mph on
the M25; I just forgot that I was
in one of those 60 mph variable
speed limit zones. Frustrating
certainly, but in fact the course
was really illuminating. I learned
a lot and I really feel that
these courses should be made
available to non speedos. The
one theme going through all the
information we received was
how our awareness plays such a
large part of how well we drive
and how we need to be alert to
everything going on around us.
A lot of what we do is habit. For
example, who, when they see a
green traffic light, doesn’t speed
up just a little so we don’t have
to wait? Habits follow us around
in whatever we do and are very
often responsible for pain and
postural problems. We don’t
usually start out in life with pain
and posture difficulties. Think of
a toddler and how they move,
squat and run with such ease
and balance. So we develop
postural habits later on that may
be stirring up problems for us
in later life. Here’s one to think
about. Look at how people text
on their mobile ‘phones. The
mobile is usually held more at
waist height and the head is
bent down over the ‘phone.
The head is very heavy, around
6/7 kg. That weight could be
causing damage to the neck/
spine as it struggles to deal with
that weight. Far better to bring
the mobile up more towards eye
level.
However, in order to break a
habit we first need to become
aware of what we are doing
which is forming the habit. So
awareness is key and the only
way we can change. As we are
on a driving theme, next time
you start to drive, think about
where you put your hands on
the steering wheel. Most of
us were taught left hand at 10
and right hand at 2. However,
this can cause tension in the
neck and shoulders. By putting
your hands at 9 and 3 it relaxes
them a little whilst still being
safe. Oh and the next time you
are becoming frustrated by the
driver in front, sticking carefully
to the speed limit, don’t get too
cross; it may be someone who’s
just been to a Speed Awareness
Course and if they get caught
again within the next three
years, it becomes a £100 fine
and three points on their Driving
Licence!
By the way, in case you’re trying
to remember, the lyrics above
are from “Born to be Wild” by
Steppenwolf
MIKE RAXWORTHY
There’s a whole lot going on in HASTINGS this September
and October - so much that I’ve had to leave Eastbourne
out this time!
On Friday September 16th, Saturday 17th and Sunday
18th you’ll find the Seafood and Wine Festival on the
Stade in Hastings Old Town. Apart from stands selling
local caught fish dishes and English wines, you’ll find a
big marquee on the beach next to the Lifeboat Station
which houses with a big bar selling real ales plus some really
great live bands!
MIKE RAXWORTHY
Friday evening (Sept 16th) is launch
party time - this year it’s Super-Ska
Night with two superb big Ska bands:
The 9 piece Mighty Sounds followed
by The 10 piece TWO TONES band.
Tickets are only £8 in advance,
available from Hastings Information
Centre in Aquila House on Hastings Seafront...and £10 on
the door. Doors open at 7pm.
with
Saturday 17th: The fest opens at 11am and live music
MIKE RAXWORTHY
kicks off in the marquee at 12 noon with all-girl rockers
Thee Jezabelles. There are 5 brilliant bands throughout
the afternoon until 7pm. Highlights to catch are the Sam
Calver Band at 3pm and Kat and Co at 4.30. Kat who’s
from Tennessee is the real deal. The Hot Detroits at 6pm
well worth waiting for too!
Purchase a £1 armband in advance from Hastings Tourist
Info office (£2 on the door) and you’ll get total access
to the Festival site and Entertainment Marquee over the
TWO AFTERNOONS to see nine live bands, as well as stuff
for kids to do. Under 18’s free!
Sunday 18th: The Jazz Breakfast - early birds can enjoy
Liane Carroll and friends from 9.30am until 12 noon.
Tickets are £15 (under 18’s £10) which includes Orange
Juice, Tea or Coffee and a plate of savoury and sweet
pastries. It’s very special and always a sell out - so book
asap.
Armband people can then enter the marquee from 12.30
to see a great afternoon of 4 more live bands until 7.30pm.
Check out The Salts at 1.15 and The Hi-Fi Sneakers at 4.15.
Blues Brothers and Soul Sisters finish the festival with a 90
minute show starting at 6pm.
In Rye, the Rye Arts Festival runs from 17th September
to 1st October, don't miss The Jazz Supper at The Mermaid
on the 29th September, featuring David Silk & Friends
plus vocalist Liz Fletcher exploring the world of original
film scores. See the ad on page 3 for more details of the
festival.
Pub Stuff: The Jenny Lind in High Street, Old Town is always
on track with their live music, offering a really good mix
of local and out-of-town bands on Fridays from 8.30,
Saturdays (relatively new idea at 6pm - proving very
popular) and Sundays from 4pm. Highlights for me
over the next two months will be: Pocketsize on Sunday
September 25th at 4pm - Liz, lead vocals has a beautiful
voice, a great country music flavour
to her delivery. She actually once had
a hit in the USA and is well worth a
listen. Saturday 22 October at 6pm -
Justin and the Argonauts - a personal
favourite of mine - great musicians,
they never fail to entertain! If you like
funk - and lots of it - Mr Super Juice
could be your thing! Lack of lead vocals might sometimes
over-funk you though. See them on Saturday 29th October
at 6pm. Free entrance.
The Albion in George Street, Old Town offer something for
every musical taste! For some bands that are that little
bit special check out The Amazing Z Star Delta on Friday
October 7th - Mick Wigfall & the Toxics on Friday October
14th (from Marseilles) and Bruise on Friday 21st October.
Entrance is free on all these gigs!
The Royal Standard in Hastings Old Town has Soul X Press
at 9pm on Friday 21st October, a guaranteed free party
night!
The Stade Open Space in Hastings Old Town: October 15th
is Hastings Bonfire Day - and night. This year, the 950th
anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, will be super special.
Starting at 12 noon will be 3 local bands: 12 noon:
Slam...1.15: The Kytes....3.00 The Kavemen. There’s a lot
more too - including Guy making - drumming (no change
there then?) - community circus - Norman and Saxon
re-enactments - archery display - hog roast, mead and
cider tent. Get in the swing of it and come dressed as
Normans or Saxons!
open from 10am
Italian Style Braised Cod - Recipe by Faz Razeen
Cod was once the Vikings favourite dish,
imported to Italy by Venetian merchants
in the 15th century and cooked in the
same way for centuries in the Vicenza
region. The white, mild flavoured flesh
of cod is available throughout the year
and is a wonderful substitute for meat
protein with its versatility making it easily
adaptable to all methods of cooking.
Preparation time: 10min
Cooking time: 20 min - Serves 4
Ingredients:
Cod fillets 450g (1 lb) if frozen cod used,
ensure thoroughly defrosted.
3 tbsps. olive oil
1 tin chopped tomatoes (400g)
1 red onion, thinly sliced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tin anchovy fillets in olive oil chopped
(50g)
Handful of black olives, pitted and sliced
Good handful chopped fresh parsley
1 Lemon
Salt and pepper
(100ml/4 fl oz) dry white wine
Method
Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan
over medium heat, slowly sauté onions
and garlic until softened. Add the tinned
tomatoes, stir gently and then add rest
of the ingredients i.e. olives, parsley,
chopped anchovy fillets and finally add
wine. Simmer for 5 minutes.
Place cod fillets in sauce. Simmer for
about 10 minutes, gently turn and cook
each side for 5 minutes.
Serve the dish with vegetables of your
choice.
