Bookplates in the News, 1970-1985: A Collection of Sixty Issues of the Newsletter of the American Society of Bookplate Collectors and Designers, Including a General Index and an Illustrations Index to Bookplate Artists and Owners with a Series of Letters Between Audrey Arellanes and Fridolf Johnson. Detroit: Gale Research Company, 1986, first edition. Red cloth with black and cream spine and cover titles, 22 by 28.5 cm, ix 640 pp., illus. Very good with light foxing on the edges of the textblock and a few of the leaves. From the collection of artist and author Fridolf Johnson and includes two typed letters from Arellanes to Johnson (one signed, one unsigned), two copies of letters from Johnson to Arellanes, a copy of Johnson’s typed review of Bookplates in the News, and a clipping of the review in print in American Artist magazine. Also included is the Gale Research press release for this volume. The letters concern Johnson’s review, as well as other bookplate-related news, like the sale of Johnson’s collections, the exhibition and publication of W.E. Butler’s Golden Era of American Bookplate Design, Johnson’s Rockwell Kent book, ABSC&D membership numbers, international friendships inspired by bookplate collecting, the revival of interest in bookplates, and Arellanes’ disappointment that “there were 4,000 collectors of barbed wire within a very short time from when their organization was started, but no such numbers for ASBC&D.” The book itself reprints the first sixty issues of Bookplates in the News which are, in Fridolf Johnson’s words, “an unusually rich source of information and inspiration.” Heavily illustrated with an amazing amount of information on bookplate designers, owners, printing styles, bookplate literature, etc. This volume includes a general index as well as an index of illustrations that makes cross-checking designers and plate owners quite simple. $125.00 3.
