COLLINSON CUSTOM BUILDING presents
KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT
A NEW LOOK TO THE FRONTENACS
COMPARED TO LAST SEASON’S RECORD SETTING TEAM, A DIFFERENT FRONTENACS TEAM TAKES TO THE ICE
There are some familiar faces to the 2016-
17 Kingston Frontenacs from the recordsetting
2015-16 team. The roster sees the
return of rookie breakouts including forwards
Jason Robertson (0 goals, 0 assists) and Ryan
Cranford (0 goals, 0 assists), as well as standout
rookie defenceman Jacob Paquette. And
goaltender Jeremy Helvig, coming off an excellent
2015-16 season with a GAA of 2.13 and
a Save Percentage of .929–second best in the
OHL last season–returns for his first season
as the team’s starting goaltender. The crop of
NHL drafted players who could likely return include
forwards Warren Foegele (Carolina Hurricanes),
Lawson Crouse (Florida Panthers),
and Spencer Watson (Los Angeles Kings), as
well as defenceman Stephen Desrocher (Toronto
Maple Leafs). And the senior corps, including
Zack Dorval, Sam Field, Ted Nichol,
Cody Caron, Liam Murray, and Nathan Billitier.
But the real story of the 2016-17 Kingston
Frontenacs is the number of new names and
faces to the roster. 2016 OHL Priority Selection
picks Nathan Dunkley (1st round), Sergey
Popov (2nd round), and Justin Pringle (9th
round) join the list of players from the previ-
ous OHL Priority Selections who see room on
the roster this season, including Tyler Burnie,
Colin Van Den Hurk and Jakob Brahaney.
PRE-SEASON ACTION: The Kingston Frontenacs
ended pre-season action with a 3-1 record,
winning both games vs. Ottawa 67’s and splitting
their two game series with Oshawa. In
their four games, the Frontenacs managed to
score 18 goals (Dunkley 6, Cranford 3, Nyman
3) and giving up 13.
The Barrie Colts ended their preseason exhibition
schedule of with a record of 2-4, winning
both games over the Niagara IceDogs but
falling to Owen Sound twice, as well as Peterborough
and Sudbury.
NEW FINNISH TOUCH: At the CHL Import Draft
in June, the Kingston Frontenacs selected
Linus Nyman and Eemeli Räsänen, both Finnish
born players. Nyman, a forward selected
in the first round, 53rd overall, had 13 goals
and 23 assists in 43 games last season with Jr.
A SM-liiga. Räsänen, selected in the second
round, 113 overall, is a big-bodied defenceman
who also played on Finland’s Ivan Hlinka
Memorial Tournament team. Both are 2017
NHL Entry Draft eligible.
The way Kingston Frontenacs general manager
Doug Gilmour sees it, Nathan Dunkley has some Sam
Bennett to his play. Maybe some Jonathan Toews, too.
One thing for certain is that the Frontenacs are
thanking their lucky stars Dunkley was available at the
17th pick at the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection
back in April.
“We were very lucky to get him and happy we did,”
Gilmour said.
“We saw a lot of him (with the Quinte Red Devils).
Everybody said he’s a leader, competes his butt off. All
the qualities you want,” he said.
“He has come in and showed at camp his work
ethic, his skill. It should be fun to watch how his development
is.”
The 16-year-old Dunkley scored six goals in four
exhibition games, leading all Ontario Hockey League
players. Two of Dunkley’s goals were game winners
and head coach Paul McFarland used the star rookie
in five-on-five play, the power play and killing penalties.
Gilmour said Dunkley is “kind of like” a Sam Bennett,
the former Frontenacs star now with the Calgary
Flames, when it comes to the way he attacks the puck.
“He’s a dog on a bone. Take it off him and he’s going
back at you,” Gilmour said.
Dunkley worked over the summer with Jason Supryka,
Frontenacs assistant coach, who runs a hockey
fitness camp.
“The effort he puts in his development he’d be like
a Jonathan Toews, too. He is a really, really serious kid.
He wants to win, he wants to get better.”
Dunkley, five-foot-eleven and 185 pounds, while
professing to be “extremely excited” for the Frontenacs
season opener Friday night against the Barrie
Colts, remains grounded.
“It’s a learning process for sure. Even in exhibition
there is always things to work on,” Dunkley said.
“Guys are a lot faster than I’m used to (and) a lot
bigger and stronger. It’s just something you’ve got to
adjust and adapt your game to.” Dunkley’s goal scoring
stood out in exhibition -- he was one of only six of
the 20 first-round drafts to score and did so at more
than double anyone else -- but so too did his play away
from the puck.
Dunkley, along with defenceman Liam Murray, led
the team with a plus/minus of plus-5.
“It is huge for a guy like Dunkley to get some confidence
right away and be part of the new team and
have an impact too,” Gilmour said.
“I want to stick to may game plan, stick to what got
me successful this far,” Dunkley said.
“Hopefully it will be doing the same, but it will take
a lot of hard work for sure. If you want to be successful
in anything in life you have to work hard at it.”
Coach McFarland said both Dunkley and 17-yearold
Linus Nyman, the team’s first-round import draft
whose 11 points in preseason led all OHL players,
should have some confidence from how they handled
exhibition play.
“We all understand the regular season is going to
be a lot tougher, a lot higher pace,” McFarland said.
“In order to score in the regular season and create
offence and generate chances you’ve got to do it in
training camp and exhibition. That’s where it starts,”
he said.
“For Dunks and Nyman, it is a great stepping some
for them to bring confidence into the season. They
both have great skill and they are tenacious. They’ve
got to keep going for us.”
Dunkley and Nyman played together on a line with
sophomore winger Jason Robertson through exhibition
play. They were the top line, amassing 21 points in
four games.
Dunkley is well aware that as teams get into the real
season the league will get even tougher.
“I want to stick to may game plan, stick to what got
me successful this far,” Dunkley said.
“Hopefully it will be doing the same but it will take a
lot of hard work for sure. If you want to be successful in
anything in life you have to work hard at it.”
10 KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY MAGAZINE

y Josh Sweetland
Ontario Hockey League
Lawson Crouse, Spencer Watson, Warren
Foegele and Stephen Desrocher are all
impact names within the grasp of the
Kingston Frontenacs for this season, but the
timetable upon which they’ll dawn the black and
gold again remains shrouded in mystery.
After one of the most memorable and exciting
seasons in franchise history, the Frontenacs,
fresh off their first East Division title since 1995,
have the potential to be very competitive again.
“Coming into it we see the East as being pretty
wide open,” said Frontenacs general manager
Doug Gilmour. “Who do we have? What direction
do we go? We don’t know yet, and that’ll be a
decision we’ll have to make after we take some
time to see what we have here.”
he’s a leader.”
As they await Crouse’s possible return, the
Frontenacs have an intriguing overage situation
featuring three players all drafted by NHL clubs.
Spencer Watson, who signed with the Los
Angeles Kings last April, underwent offseason
wrist surgery and won’t return until approximately
mid-December. His 43 goals last season were
the most by a Frontenacs player since Matt
Elich’s 44 in 1999.
“After discussions with Los Angeles we’re led
to believe that there’s a good chance Spencer will
be back with us,” said Gilmour of the situation.
“It’s still kind of up in the air, but his missing
half the season may delay his graduation by one
year.”
Carolina Hurricanes prospect Warren
Foegele, a third round pick by the club prior to
his OHL career in 2014, remains unsigned and
WITH SOME FAMILIAR NAMES AND A FEW NEW FACES, THE 2016-17 EDITION OF THE KINGSTON
FRONTENACS ARE OUT TO CREATE THEIR OWN IDENTITY IN THE OHL’S EASTERN CONFERENCE.
Power winger Lawson Crouse will attend camp
with the Arizona Coyotes after being dealt to the
desert by the Florida Panthers this past summer.
The 6-foot-4, 210Ib. flank who has represented
Canada at the World Juniors in each of the past
two years is a special talent for the Frontenacs
and could get an extended look with the Coyotes.
“Lawson is a big man who plays the game as
hard as anyone,” said Gilmour. “Obviously with
the shakeup that happened in Florida this past
year there were some changes made and Arizona
got themselves a guy who, once he makes it to
the NHL, is going to have a 15-17 year career
and possibly be the captain of that team. I think
there’s some incentive there for Lawson to show
his new team what he can do. He demands
respect in the dressing room for everybody and
could return as a 20-year-old.
“The addition of Foegele gave us another
layer of depth last season and, should he be
back with us, he’d be our number one centre,”
said Gilmour. “His work ethic is over the top and
he has that extra gear, that breakaway speed that
few players possess.”
With Crouse, Watson and Foegele all in the
plans, the Frontenacs also feature the OHL Pre-
Season’s leading scorer in 17-year-old Finnish
winger Linus Nyman while 2016 first round pick
Nathan Dunkley lead the league in goals with six.
Sophomore winger Jason Robertson, whose
18 goals last season were the most by a Fronts
16-year-old since Anthony Stewart in 2002,
has worked hard on his skating and is quickly
developing into a reliable offensive option in
OFFICIAL GAMEDAY PROGRAM, VOLUME 44, 2016
11

Kingston.
“Jason is just one of those guys who finds
ways to get on the scoresheet,” said Gilmour,
who many could say had a similar knack during
his playing days. “He’s not the quickest guy on
the ice, but he always finds ways to make plays
and get to the net. He improved on his strength
this past summer and he will be a lot of fun to
watch.”
Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Stephen
Desrocher could be a big asset on the blue
line as an overager. Desrocher was drafted as a
19-year-old by Toronto, giving the club until the
end of this season to sign him to an entry-level
deal.
Desrocher’s potential return would give the
Frontenacs a veteran to play alongside highly
touted youngsters in draft eligible Jacob Paquette
and 6-foot-6 Finnish talent Eemeli Rasanen.
“There’s a new look on the blue line with
Roland McKeown having moved on,” said
Gilmour. “We think Jacob Paquette can be one
of the top draft eligible guys in our league this
year, that Rasanen has a lot to offer with that big
wingspan and that (17-year-old) Jakob Brahaney
took big strides during his time with the Kingston
Voyageurs last season.”
The Frontenacs will also feature 19-year-old
Liam Murray, 18-year-old commitment Liam
Kendall and youngsters Colin Ven Den Hurk and
Emmett Gordon as options on the back end.
Overager Nathan Billitier also remains with the
club.
Jeremy Helving returns to the crease after
quietly emerging as one of the league’s top
goaltenders in a limited role last season. From
January to the end of the 2015-16 season, Helvig
went 12-1-0-1 with a 1.67 goals-against-average
and a .944 save percentage over 15 games. The
fifth round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes last
summer will see his share of minutes this time
around.
“It can be hard as a backup sometimes to
get into games when the team is on a roll, but
Jeremy stepped up and made the most of his
chances last season,” said Gilmour. “He paid
his dues, worked really hard in practice, and got
himself onto the NHL radar with a great second
half. He’s a big body that keeps getting better
and we’ll be counting on him.”
With plenty of questions from the outset this
season, the Frontenacs will take things a day
at a time until their roster is solidified following
decisions in the pro ranks.
“We’re going young here as well,” said
Gilmour of his club’s makeup. “We’ve added
some young guys to the group and we’re
committed to developing those players for the
future.”
“Mississauga looks like they’ll be good and
there are some other teams who will be making
improvements, but we think we’re right there.”
After setting new single-season marks for
wins (46) and points (97) last season, the
Frontenacs look to build off that momentum
and remain a competitive presence in the East
Division.
